1 A conteció en el año catorce del rey Ezequías, que Sennaquerib rey de Asiria subió contra todas las ciudades fuertes de Judá, y las tomó.

Now in the fourteenth year of King Hezekiah, Sennacherib king of Assyria came up against all the fortified cities of Judah and took them.

2 Y el rey de Asiria envió a Rabsaces con gran ejército desde Laquis a Jerusalén al rey Ezequías; y asentó el campo a los caños de la pesquera de arriba, en el camino de la heredad del Lavador.

And the king of Assyria sent the Rabshakeh from Lachish to King Hezekiah at Jerusalem with a great army. And he stood by the canal of the Upper Pool on the highway to the Fuller’s Field.

3 Y salió a él Eliacim hijo de Hilcías, mayordomo, y Sebna, escriba, y Joa hijo de Asaf, escritor de crónicas.

Then came out to meet him Eliakim son of Hilkiah, who was over the household, and Shebna the secretary, and Joah son of Asaph, the recording historian.

4 A los cuales dijo Rabsaces: Ahora pues, diréis a Ezequías: El gran rey, el rey de Asiria, dice así: ¿Qué confianza es ésta en que confías?

And the Rabshakeh said to them, Say to Hezekiah, Thus says the great king, the king of Assyria: What reason for confidence is this in which you trust?

5 D igo, alegas tú, (empero palabras vanas) que tengo consejo y fortaleza para la guerra. Ahora bien, ¿en quién confías que te rebelas contra mí?

Do you suppose that mere words of the lips can pass for warlike counsel and strength? Now in whom do you trust and on whom do you rely, that you rebel against me?

6 H e aquí que confías en este bordón de caña frágil, en Egipto, sobre el cual si alguien se apoyare, entrarásele por la mano, y se la atravesará. Tal es Faraón rey de Egipto para con todos los que en él confían.

Behold, you trust in the staff of this bruised and broken reed, Egypt, which will pierce the hand of any man who leans on it. So is Pharaoh king of Egypt to all who trust and rely on him.

7 Y si me dijeres: En el SEÑOR nuestro Dios confiamos, ¿no es éste aquel cuyos altos y cuyos altares hizo quitar Ezequías, y dijo a Judá y a Jerusalén: Delante de este altar adoraréis?

But if you say to me, We trust in and rely on the Lord our God—is it not He Whose high places and Whose altars Hezekiah has taken away, saying to Judah and to Jerusalem, You shall worship before this altar?

8 A hora, pues, yo te ruego que des rehenes al rey de Asiria mi señor; y yo te daré dos mil caballos, si pudieres tú dar caballeros que cabalguen sobre ellos.

Now therefore, I pray you, make a wager with my master the king of Assyria and give him pledges, and I will give you two thousand horses—if you are able on your part to put riders on them.

9 ¿ Cómo, pues, harás volver el rostro de un capitán de los más pequeños siervos de mi Señor, aunque estés confiado en Egipto por sus carros y hombres de a caballo?

How then can you repulse the attack of a single captain of the least of my master’s servants, when you put your reliance on Egypt for chariots and for horsemen?

10 ¿ Y por ventura vine yo ahora a esta tierra para destruirla sin el SEÑOR? El SEÑOR me dijo: Sube a esta tierra para destruirla.

Moreover, is it without the Lord that I have now come up against this land to destroy it? The Lord said to me, Go up against this land and destroy it.

11 E ntonces dijeron Eliacim, Sebna y Joa a Rabsaces: Te rogamos que hables a tus siervos en lengua de Asiria, porque nosotros la entendemos; y no hables con nosotros en lengua judaica, oyéndolo el pueblo que está sobre el muro.

Then Eliakim and Shebna and Joah said to the Rabshakeh, We pray you, speak to your servants in the Aramaic or Syrian language, for we understand it; and do not speak to us in the language of the Jews in the hearing of the people on the wall.

12 Y dijo Rabsaces: ¿Me envió mi señor a ti y a tu señor, a que dijera estas palabras, o a los hombres, que están sobre el muro para comer su estiércol, y beber su orina con vosotros?

But the Rabshakeh said, Has my master sent me to speak these words only to your master and to you? Has he not sent me to the men sitting on the wall, who are doomed with you to eat their own dung and drink their own urine?

13 Y se paró Rabsaces, y gritó a gran voz en lengua judaica, diciendo: Oíd las palabras del gran rey, el rey de Asiria.

Then the Rabshakeh stood and cried with a loud voice in the language of the Jews: Hear the words of the great king, the king of Assyria!

14 E l rey dice así: No os engañe Ezequías, porque no os podrá librar.

Thus says the king: Let not Hezekiah deceive you, for he will not be able to deliver you.

15 N i os haga Ezequías confiar en el SEÑOR, diciendo: Ciertamente el SEÑOR nos librará; no será entregada esta ciudad en la mano del rey de Asiria.

Nor let Hezekiah make you trust in and rely on the Lord, saying, The Lord will surely deliver us; this city will not be delivered into the hand of the king of Assyria.

16 N o escuchéis a Ezequías, porque el rey de Asiria dice así: Haced conmigo paz, y salid a mí; y coma cada uno de su viña, y cada uno de su higuera, y beba cada cual las aguas de su pozo.

Do not listen to Hezekiah, for thus says the king of Assyria: Make your peace with me and come out to me; and eat every one from his own vine and every one from his own fig tree and drink every one the water of his own cistern,

17 H asta que yo venga, y os lleve a una tierra como la vuestra, tierra de grano y de vino, tierra de pan y de viñas.

Until I come and take you away to a land like your own land, a land of grain and wine, a land of bread and vineyards.

18 M irad no os engañe Ezequías diciendo: El SEÑOR nos librará. ¿Libraron los dioses de los gentiles cada uno a su tierra de la mano del rey de Asiria?

Beware lest Hezekiah persuade and mislead you by saying, The Lord will deliver us. Has any one of the gods of the nations ever delivered his land out of the hand of the king of Assyria?

19 ¿ Dónde está el dios de Hamat y de Arfad? ¿Dónde está el dios de Sefarvaim? ¿Libraron a Samaria de mi mano?

Where are the gods of Hamath and Arpad ? Where are the gods of Sepharvaim ? And have delivered Samaria out of my hand?

20 ¿ Qué dios hay entre todos los dioses de estas tierras, que haya librado su tierra de mi mano, para que el SEÑOR libre de mi mano a Jerusalén?

Who among all the gods of these lands has delivered his land out of my hand, that the Lord can deliver Jerusalem out of my hand?

21 M as callaron, y no le respondieron palabra, porque el Rey así lo había mandado, diciendo: No le respondáis.

But they kept still and answered him not a word, for the king’s command was, Do not answer him.

22 E ntonces Eliacim hijo de Hilcías mayordomo, y Sebna escriba, y Joa hijo de Asaf escritor de crónicas, vinieron a Ezequías rotos sus vestidos; y le contaron las palabras de Rabsaces.

Then Eliakim son of Hilkiah, who was over the household, and Shebna the secretary, and Joah son of Asaph, the recording historian came to Hezekiah with their clothes rent, and told him the words of the Rabshakeh.
