1 ¶ Entonces habló Jesús a la multitud y a sus discípulos,

Then Jesus said to the multitudes and to His disciples,

2 d iciendo: Sobre la cátedra de Moisés se sentaron los escribas y los fariseos.

The scribes and Pharisees sit on Moses’ seat.

3 A sí que, todo lo que os dijeren que guardéis, guardadlo y hacedlo; mas no hagáis conforme a sus obras; porque dicen, y no la hacen.

So observe and practice all they tell you; but do not do what they do, for they preach, but do not practice.

4 P orque atan cargas pesadas y difíciles de llevar, y las ponen sobre los hombros de los hombres; mas ni aun con su dedo las quieren mover.

They tie up heavy loads, hard to bear, and place them on men’s shoulders, but they themselves will not lift a finger to help bear them.

5 A ntes, todas sus obras hacen para ser mirados de los hombres; porque ensanchan sus filacterias, y extienden los flecos de sus mantos;

They do all their works to be seen of men; for they make wide their phylacteries ( small cases enclosing certain Scripture passages, worn during prayer on the left arm and forehead) and make long their fringes.

6 y aman el primer lugar en las cenas, y las primeras sillas en las sinagogas;

And they take pleasure in and love the place of honor at feasts and the best seats in the synagogues,

7 y las salutaciones en las plazas, y ser llamados por los hombres Rabí, Rabí.

And to be greeted with honor in the marketplaces and to have people call them rabbi.

8 M as vosotros, no queráis ser llamados Rabí; porque uno es vuestro Maestro, el Cristo; y todos vosotros sois hermanos.

But you are not to be called rabbi (teacher), for you have one Teacher and you are all brothers.

9 Y vuestro padre no llaméis a nadie en la tierra; porque uno es vuestro Padre, el cual está en los cielos.

And do not call anyone on earth father, for you have one Father, Who is in heaven.

10 N i seáis llamados maestros; porque uno es vuestro Maestro, el Cristo.

And you must not be called masters (leaders), for you have one Master (Leader), the Christ.

11 E l que es el mayor de vosotros, sea vuestro siervo.

He who is greatest among you shall be your servant.

12 P orque el que se ensalzare, será humillado; y el que se humillare, será ensalzado.

Whoever exalts himself '> with haughtiness and empty pride] shall be humbled (brought low), and whoever humbles himself shall be raised to honor.

13 ¶ Mas ¡ay de vosotros, escribas y fariseos, hipócritas! Porque cerráis el Reino de los cielos delante de los hombres; que ni vosotros entráis, ni a los que están entrando dejáis entrar.

But woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, pretenders (hypocrites)! For you shut the kingdom of heaven in men’s faces; for you neither enter yourselves, nor do you allow those who are about to go in to do so.

14 ¡ Ay de vosotros, escribas y fariseos, hipócritas! Porque coméis las casas de las viudas, y por pretexto hacéis larga oración; por esto llevaréis mas grave juicio.

Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, pretenders (hypocrites)! For you swallow up widows’ houses and for a pretense to cover it up make long prayers; therefore you will receive the greater condemnation and the heavier sentence.

15 ¡ Ay de vosotros, escribas y fariseos, hipócritas! Porque rodeáis el mar y la tierra por hacer un prosélito; y cuando fuere hecho, le hacéis hijo del infierno dos veces más que vosotros.

Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, pretenders (hypocrites)! For you travel over sea and land to make a single proselyte, and when he becomes one, you make him doubly as much a child of hell (Gehenna) as you are.

16 ¡ Ay de vosotros, guías ciegos! Que decís: Cualquiera que jurare por el Templo es nada; mas cualquiera que jurare por el oro del Templo, deudor es.

Woe to you, blind guides, who say, If anyone swears by the sanctuary of the temple, it is nothing; but if anyone swears by the gold of the sanctuary, he is a debtor.

17 ¡ Insensatos y ciegos! Porque ¿cuál es mayor, el oro, o el Templo que santifica al oro?

You blind fools! For which is greater: the gold, or the sanctuary of the temple that has made the gold sacred?

18 Y : Cualquiera que jurare por el altar, es nada; mas cualquiera que jurare por el presente que está sobre él, deudor es.

You say too, Whoever swears by the altar is not duty bound; but whoever swears by the offering on the altar, his oath is binding.

19 ¡ Insensatos y ciegos! Porque, ¿cuál es mayor, el presente, o el altar que santifica al presente?

You blind men! Which is greater: the gift, or the altar which makes the gift sacred?

20 P ues el que jurare por el altar, jura por él, y por todo lo que está sobre él;

So whoever swears by the altar swears by it and by everything on it.

21 y el que jurare por el Templo, jura por él, y por Aquel que habita en él;

And he who swears by the sanctuary of the temple swears by it and by Him Who dwells in it.

22 y el que jura por el cielo, jura por el trono de Dios, y por Aquel que está sentado sobre él.

And whoever swears by heaven swears by the throne of God and by Him Who sits upon it.

23 ¡ Ay de vosotros, escribas y fariseos, hipócritas! Porque diezmáis la menta y el eneldo y el comino, y dejasteis lo que es lo más importante de la ley: el juicio y la misericordia y la fe; esto era necesario hacer, y no dejar lo otro.

Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, pretenders (hypocrites)! For you give a tenth of your mint and dill and cummin, and have neglected and omitted the weightier (more important) matters of the Law—right and justice and mercy and fidelity. These you ought to have done, without neglecting the others.

24 ¡ Guías ciegos, que coláis el mosquito, mas tragáis el camello!

You blind guides, filtering out a gnat and gulping down a camel!

25 ¡ Ay de vosotros, escribas y fariseos, hipócritas! Porque limpiáis lo que está de fuera del vaso o del plato; mas por dentro están llenos de robo y de incontinencia.

Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, pretenders (hypocrites)! For you clean the outside of the cup and of the plate, but within they are full of extortion (prey, spoil, plunder) and grasping self-indulgence.

26 ¡ Fariseo ciego, limpia primero lo de dentro del vaso y del plato, para que también lo de fuera se haga limpio!

You blind Pharisee! First clean the inside of the cup and of the plate, so that the outside may be clean also.

27 ¡ Ay de vosotros, escribas y fariseos, hipócritas! Porque sois semejantes a sepulcros blanqueados, que por fuera, a la verdad, se muestran hermosos, mas por dentro están llenos de huesos de muertos y de toda suciedad.

Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, pretenders (hypocrites)! For you are like tombs that have been whitewashed, which look beautiful on the outside but inside are full of dead men’s bones and everything impure.

28 A sí también vosotros por fuera, a la verdad, os mostráis justos a los hombres; mas por dentro, llenos estáis de hipocresía e iniquidad.

Just so, you also outwardly seem to people to be just and upright but inside you are full of pretense and lawlessness and iniquity.

29 ¡ Ay de vosotros, escribas y fariseos, hipócritas! Porque edificáis los sepulcros de los profetas, y adornáis los monumentos de los justos,

Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, pretenders (hypocrites)! For you build tombs for the prophets and decorate the monuments of the righteous,

30 y decís: Si estuviéramos en los días de nuestros padres, no hubiéramos sido sus compañeros en la sangre de los profetas.

Saying, If we had lived in the days of our forefathers, we would not have aided them in shedding the blood of the prophets.

31 A sí que, testimonio dais a vosotros mismos, que sois hijos de aquellos que mataron a los profetas.

Thus you are testifying against yourselves that you are the descendants of those who murdered the prophets.

32 ¡ Vosotros también llenad la medida de vuestros padres!

Fill up, then, the measure of your fathers’ sins to the brim '> that nothing may be wanting to a full measure].

33 ¡ Serpientes, generación de víboras! ¿Cómo evitaréis el juicio del infierno?

You serpents! You spawn of vipers! How can you escape the penalty to be suffered in hell (Gehenna)?

34 ¶ Por tanto, he aquí, yo envío a vosotros profetas, y sabios, y escribas; y de ellos, a unos mataréis y colgaréis de un madero, y a otros de ellos azotaréis en vuestras sinagogas, y perseguiréis de ciudad en ciudad.

Because of this, take notice: I am sending you prophets and wise men (interpreters and teachers) and scribes (men learned in the Mosaic Law and the Prophets); some of them you will kill, even crucify, and some you will flog in your synagogues and pursue and persecute from town to town,

35 P ara que venga sobre vosotros toda la sangre justa que se ha derramado sobre la tierra, desde la sangre de Abel el justo, hasta la sangre de Zacarías, hijo de Berequías, al cual matasteis entre el Templo y el altar.

So that upon your heads may come all the blood of the righteous ( those who correspond to the divine standard of right) shed on earth, from the blood of the righteous Abel to the blood of Zechariah son of Barachiah, whom you murdered between the sanctuary and the altar.

36 D e cierto os digo que todo esto vendrá sobre esta generación.

Truly I declare to you, all these '> evil, calamitous times] will come upon this generation.

37 ¡ Jerusalén, Jerusalén, que matas a los profetas, y apedreas a los que son enviados a ti! ¡Cuántas veces quise juntar tus hijos, como la gallina junta sus pollos debajo de las alas, y no quisiste!

O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, murdering the prophets and stoning those who are sent to you! How often would I have gathered your children together as a mother fowl gathers her brood under her wings, and you refused!

38 H e aquí vuestra Casa os es dejada desierta.

Behold, your house is forsaken and desolate (abandoned and left destitute of God’s help).

39 P orque os digo que desde ahora no me veréis, hasta que digáis: Bendito el que viene en el nombre del Señor.

For I declare to you, you will not see Me again until you say, Blessed (magnified in worship, adored, and exalted) is He Who comes in the name of the Lord!
