1 L os proverbios de Salomón hijo de David, rey de Israel,

The proverbs (truths obscurely expressed, maxims, and parables) of Solomon son of David, king of Israel:

2 p ara aprender sabiduría y doctrina, para conocer razones prudentes,

That people may know skillful and godly Wisdom and instruction, discern and comprehend the words of understanding and insight,

3 p ara adquirir instrucción y prudencia, justicia, juicio y equidad;

Receive instruction in wise dealing and the discipline of wise thoughtfulness, righteousness, justice, and integrity,

4 p ara dar sagacidad a los ingenuos, y a los jóvenes inteligencia y cordura.

That prudence may be given to the simple, and knowledge, discretion, and discernment to the youth—

5 E l sabio los escucha y aumenta su saber, y el inteligente adquiere capacidad

The wise also will hear and increase in learning, and the person of understanding will acquire skill and attain to sound counsel —

6 p ara entender los proverbios y sentencias, las palabras de los sabios y sus enigmas.

That people may understand a proverb and a figure of speech or an enigma with its interpretation, and the words of the wise and their dark sayings or riddles.

7 E l principio de la sabiduría es el temor de Jehová; los insensatos desprecian la sabiduría y la enseñanza. Amonestaciones de la sabiduría

The reverent and worshipful fear of the Lord is the beginning and the principal and choice part of knowledge; but fools despise skillful and godly Wisdom, instruction, and discipline.

8 « Escucha, hijo mío, la instrucción de tu padre y no abandones la enseñanza de tu madre,

My son, hear the instruction of your father; reject not nor forsake the teaching of your mother.

9 p orque adorno de gracia serán en tu cabeza, y collares en tu cuello.

For they are a chaplet (garland) of grace upon your head and chains and pendants for your neck.

10 H ijo mío, si los pecadores intentan engañarte, no lo consientas.

My son, if sinners entice you, do not consent.

11 S i te dicen: “Ven con nosotros, pongamos asechanzas para derramar sangre, acechemos sin motivo al inocente;

If they say, Come with us; let us lie in wait blood, let us ambush the innocent without cause;

12 l os tragaremos vivos, como el seol, y enteros, como los que caen en la fosa;

Let us swallow them up alive as does Sheol (the place of the dead), and whole, as those who go down into the pit;

13 h allaremos toda clase de riquezas, llenaremos nuestras casas con el botín.

We shall find and take all kinds of precious goods, we shall fill our houses with plunder;

14 V en, une tu suerte a la nuestra y hagamos una bolsa común entre todos”,

Throw in your lot with us and be a sworn brother and comrade; let us all have one purse in common—

15 t ú, hijo mío, no vayas en el camino con ellos, sino aparta tu pie de sus veredas,

My son, do not walk in the way with them; restrain your foot from their path;

16 p orque sus pies corren hacia el mal, se apresuran a derramar sangre.

For their feet run to evil, and they make haste to shed blood.

17 E n vano es tender una red ante los ojos del ave,

For in vain is the net spread in the sight of any bird!

18 p ero ellos a su propia sangre ponen asechanzas, contra sí mismos tienden la trampa.

But they are lying in wait for their own blood; they set an ambush for their own lives.

19 A sí son las sendas de todo el que es dado a la codicia, la cual quita la vida de sus poseedores.

So are the ways of everyone who is greedy of gain; such takes away the lives of its possessors.

20 » La sabiduría clama en las calles, alza su voz en las plazas;

Wisdom cries aloud in the street, she raises her voice in the markets;

21 C lama en los principales lugares de reunión, a la entrada de las puertas de la ciudad dice sus razones:

She cries at the head of the noisy intersections; at the entrance of the city gates she speaks:

22 “ ¿Hasta cuándo, ingenuos, amaréis la ingenuidad? ¿Hasta cuándo los burlones desearán burlarse y los insensatos aborrecerán el conocimiento?

How long, O simple ones, will you love being simple? And the scoffers delight in scoffing and fools hate knowledge?

23 ¡ Volveos a mi reprensión!, pues ciertamente yo derramaré mi espíritu sobre vosotros y os haré saber mis palabras.

If you will turn (repent) and give heed to my reproof, behold, I '> Wisdom] will pour out my spirit upon you, I will make my words known to you.

24 Y o os llamé, pero no quisisteis escuchar; tendí mi mano, pero no hubo quien atendiera,

Because I have called and you have refused, have stretched out my hand and no man has heeded it,

25 s ino que desechasteis todos mis consejos y rechazasteis mi reprensión;

And you treated as nothing all my counsel and would accept none of my reproof,

26 p or eso, también yo me reiré en vuestra calamidad, me burlaré cuando os venga lo que teméis,

I also will laugh at your calamity; I will mock when the thing comes that shall cause you terror and panic—

27 c uando venga como una destrucción lo que teméis y vuestra calamidad llegue como un torbellino; cuando sobre vosotros venga tribulación y angustia.

When your panic comes as a storm and desolation and your calamity comes on as a whirlwind, when distress and anguish come upon you.

28 » ”Entonces me llamarán, pero no responderé; me buscarán de mañana, pero no me hallarán.

Then will they call upon me but I will not answer; they will seek me early and diligently but they will not find me.

29 P or cuanto aborrecieron la sabiduría y no escogieron el temor de Jehová,

Because they hated knowledge and did not choose the reverent and worshipful fear of the Lord,

30 s ino que rechazaron mi consejo y menospreciaron todas mis reprensiones,

Would accept none of my counsel, and despised all my reproof,

31 c omerán del fruto de su camino y se hastiarán de sus propios consejos.

Therefore shall they eat of the fruit of their own way and be satiated with their own devices.

32 P orque el desvío de los ignorantes los matará, la prosperidad de los necios los echará a perder;

For the backsliding of the simple shall slay them, and the careless ease of fools shall destroy them.

33 p ero el que me escuche vivirá confiadamente, estará tranquilo, sin temor del mal.”

But whoso hearkens to me shall dwell securely and in confident trust and shall be quiet, without fear or dread of evil.
