1 E ntonces respondió Elifaz, el temanita, y dijo:

Then Eliphaz the Temanite answered and said,

2 « Si probamos a hablarte, te será molesto, pero ¿quién podrá detener las palabras?

If we venture to converse with you, will you be offended? Yet who can restrain himself from speaking?

3 T ú enseñabas a muchos y fortalecías las manos debilitadas;

Behold, you have instructed many, and you have strengthened the weak hands.

4 c on tus palabras sostenías al que tropezaba y afirmabas las rodillas que decaían.

Your words have held firm him who was falling, and you have strengthened the feeble knees.

5 M as ahora te desalientas al venir el mal sobre ti; al alcanzarte, te conturbas.

But now it is come upon you, and you faint and are grieved; it touches you, and you are troubled and dismayed.

6 ¿ No has puesto tu confianza en temer a Dios? ¿No has puesto tu esperanza en la integridad de tus caminos?

Is not your fear of God your confidence and the integrity and uprightness of your ways your hope?

7 » Piensa ahora: ¿qué inocente se pierde? ¿Dónde los rectos son destruidos?

Think, I beg of you: who, being innocent, ever perished? Or where were those upright and in right standing with God cut off?

8 Y o he visto cosechar iniquidad a quienes siembran injuria e iniquidad cultivan.

As I myself have seen, those who plow iniquity and sow trouble and mischief reap the same.

9 P erecen por el aliento de Dios; por el soplo de su ira son consumidos.

By the breath of God they perish, and by the blast of His anger they are consumed.

10 L os rugidos del león, los bramidos del que ruge, y los dientes de sus cachorros son quebrantados.

The roaring of the lion and the voice of the fierce lion, and the teeth of the young lions are broken.

11 E l león viejo perece por falta de presa, y los hijos de la leona se dispersan.

The old and strong lion perishes for lack of prey, and the whelps of the lioness are scattered abroad.

12 » El asunto me llegó como un susurro; mis oídos lograron percibirlo.

Now a thing was secretly brought to me, and my ear received a whisper of it.

13 E n la imaginación de visiones nocturnas, cuando el sueño cae sobre los hombres,

In thoughts from the visions of the night, when deep sleep falls on men,

14 m e sobrevino un espanto y un temblor que estremeció todos mis huesos:

Fear came upon me and trembling, which made all my bones shake.

15 y al pasar un soplo por delante de mí, se erizó el pelo de mi cuerpo.

Then a spirit passed before my face; the hair of my flesh stood up!

16 D elante de mis ojos se detuvo un fantasma cuyo rostro no reconocí, y lo oí decir muy quedo:

stood still, but I could not discern the appearance of it. A form was before my eyes; there was silence, and then I heard a voice, saying,

17 “ ¿Será el mortal más justo que Dios? ¿Será el hombre más puro que el que lo hizo?

Can mortal man be just before God, or be more right than He is? Can a man be pure before his Maker, or be more cleansed than He is?

18 S i ni siquiera en sus siervos confía, y aun en sus ángeles descubre el error,

Even in His servants He puts no trust or confidence, and His angels He charges with folly and error—

19 ¡ mucho menos en aquellos que habitan en casas de barro cimentadas en el polvo, que serán aplastadas como la polilla!

How much more those who dwell in houses (bodies) of clay, whose foundations are in the dust, who are crushed like the moth.

20 D e la mañana a la tarde son destruidos, y se pierden para siempre sin haber quien repare en ello.

Between morning and evening they are destroyed; without anyone noticing it they perish forever.

21 S u belleza se pierde con ellos, y mueren sin haber adquirido sabiduría.”

Is not their tent cord plucked up within them ? Do they not die, and that without wisdom?
