1 A l ver Raquel que no daba hijos a Jacob tuvo envidia de su hermana, y dijo a Jacob: —Dame hijos, o si no, me muero.

When Rachel saw that she bore Jacob no children, she envied her sister, and said to Jacob, Give me children, or else I will die!

2 J acob se enojó con Raquel y le dijo: —¿Soy yo acaso Dios, que te ha negado el fruto de tu vientre?

And Jacob became very angry with Rachel and he said, Am I in God’s stead, Who has denied you children?

3 E ntonces ella le dijo: —Aquí está mi sierva Bilha; llégate a ella, y que dé a luz sobre mis rodillas. Así yo también tendré hijos de ella.

And she said, See here, take my maid Bilhah and have intercourse with her; and she shall deliver it upon my knees, that I by her may also have children.

4 L e dio a Bilha, su sierva, por mujer, y Jacob se llegó a ella.

And she gave him Bilhah her maid as a wife, and Jacob had intercourse with her.

5 B ilha concibió y dio a luz un hijo a Jacob.

And Bilhah became pregnant and bore Jacob a son.

6 D ijo entonces Raquel: «Me juzgó Dios, pues ha oído mi voz y me ha dado un hijo.» Por tanto, llamó su nombre Dan.

And Rachel said, God has judged and vindicated me, and has heard my plea and has given me a son; so she named him Dan.

7 C oncibió otra vez Bilha, la sierva de Raquel, y dio a luz un segundo hijo a Jacob.

And Bilhah, Rachel’s maid, conceived again and bore Jacob a second son.

8 Y dijo Raquel: «En contienda de Dios he luchado con mi hermana y he vencido.» Le puso por nombre Neftalí.

And Rachel said, With mighty wrestlings I have struggled with my sister and have prevailed; so she named him Naphtali.

9 A l ver Lea que había dejado de dar a luz, tomó a su sierva Zilpa, y la dio a Jacob por mujer.

When Leah saw that she had ceased to bear, she gave Zilpah her maid to Jacob as a wife.

10 Y Zilpa, sierva de Lea, dio a luz un hijo a Jacob.

And Zilpah, Leah’s maid, bore Jacob a son.

11 E ntonces dijo Lea: «Vino la ventura»; y le puso por nombre Gad.

Then Leah said, Victory and good fortune have come; and she named him Gad.

12 L uego Zilpa, la sierva de Lea, dio a luz otro hijo a Jacob.

Zilpah, Leah’s maid, bore Jacob second son.

13 Y dijo Lea: «Para dicha mía, porque las mujeres me llamarán dichosa»; y le puso por nombre Aser.

And Leah said, I am happy, for women will call me blessed (happy, fortunate, to be envied); and she named him Asher.

14 E n el tiempo de la siega del trigo halló Rubén en el campo unas mandrágoras que trajo a Lea, su madre. Y dijo Raquel a Lea: —Te ruego que me des de las mandrágoras de tu hijo.

Now Reuben went at the time of wheat harvest and found some mandrakes (love apples) in the field and brought them to his mother Leah. Then Rachel said to Leah, Give me, I pray you, some of your son’s mandrakes.

15 E lla respondió: —¿Te parece poco que hayas tomado mi marido, para que también quieras llevarte las mandrágoras de mi hijo? Raquel dijo: —Pues dormirá contigo esta noche a cambio de las mandrágoras de tu hijo.

But answered, Is it not enough that you have taken my husband without your taking away my son’s mandrakes also? And Rachel said, Jacob shall sleep with you tonight for your son’s mandrakes.

16 A la tarde, cuando Jacob volvía del campo, salió Lea a su encuentro y le dijo: —Llégate a mí, porque a la verdad te he alquilado por las mandrágoras de mi hijo. Y durmió con ella aquella noche.

And Jacob came out of the field in the evening, and Leah went out to meet him and said, You must sleep with me, for I have certainly paid your hire with my son’s mandrakes. So he slept with her that night.

17 D ios oyó a Lea, que concibió y dio a luz el quinto hijo a Jacob.

And God heeded Leah’s, and she conceived and bore Jacob fifth son.

18 Y dijo Lea: «Dios me ha dado mi recompensa, por cuanto di mi sierva a mi marido»; por eso lo llamó Isacar.

Leah said, God has given me my hire, because I have given my maid to my husband; and she called his name Issachar.

19 D espués concibió Lea otra vez, y dio a luz el sexto hijo a Jacob.

And Leah became pregnant again and bore Jacob sixth son.

20 Y dijo Lea: «Dios me ha dado una buena dote; ahora vivirá conmigo mi marido, porque le he dado a luz seis hijos.» Y le puso por nombre Zabulón.

Then Leah said, God has endowed me with a good marriage gift; now will he dwell with me, because I have borne him six sons; and she named him Zebulun.

21 P or último dio a luz una hija, y le puso por nombre Dina.

Afterwards she bore a daughter and called her Dinah.

22 P ero se acordó Dios de Raquel, la oyó Dios y le concedió hijos.

Then God remembered Rachel and answered her pleading and made it possible for her to have children.

23 C oncibió ella y dio a luz un hijo. Y exclamó: «Dios ha quitado mi afrenta»;

And she became pregnant and bore a son; and she said, God has taken away my reproach, disgrace, and humiliation.

24 y le puso por nombre José, diciendo: «Añádame Jehová otro hijo.» Tretas de Jacob y de Labán

And she called his name Joseph and said, May the Lord add to me another son.

25 C uando Raquel dio a luz a José, Jacob dijo a Labán: —Déjame ir a mi lugar, a mi tierra.

When Rachel had borne Joseph, Jacob said to Laban, Send me away, that I may go to my own place and country.

26 D ame a mis mujeres, por las cuales te he servido, y a mis hijos, y déjame ir; pues tú sabes los servicios que te he prestado.

Give me my wives and my children, for whom I have served you, and let me go; for you know the work which I have done for you.

27 L abán le respondió: —Halle yo ahora gracia en tus ojos, y quédate; he experimentado que Jehová me ha bendecido por tu causa.

And Laban said to him, If I have found favor in your sight, I pray you; for I have learned by experience and from the omens in divination that the Lord has favored me with blessings on your account.

28 Y añadió: —Señálame tu salario y yo te lo pagaré.

He said, State your salary and I will give it.

29 J acob respondió: —Tú sabes cómo te he servido y cómo ha estado tu ganado conmigo,

Jacob answered him, You know how I have served you, and how your possessions, your cattle and sheep and goats, have fared with me.

30 p orque poco tenías antes de mi venida, y ha crecido en gran número; Jehová te ha bendecido con mi llegada. Y ahora, ¿cuándo trabajaré también para mi propia casa?

For you had little before I came, and it has increased and multiplied abundantly; and the Lord has favored you with blessings wherever I turned. But now, when shall I provide for my own house also?

31 L abán le preguntó entonces: —¿Qué te daré? Y respondió Jacob: —No me des nada. Si haces esto por mí, volveré a apacentar tus ovejas.

said, What shall I give you? And Jacob said, You shall not give me anything, if you will do this one thing for me, and I will again feed and take care of your flock.

32 H oy pasaré por entre tu rebaño y apartaré todas las ovejas manchadas y salpicadas de color y todas las ovejas de color oscuro, y las manchadas y salpicadas de color entre las cabras. Eso será mi salario,

Let me pass through all your flock today, removing from it every speckled and spotted animal and every black one among the sheep, and the spotted and speckled among the goats; and such shall be my wages.

33 y la garantía de mi honradez el día de mañana. Cuando vengas a ver lo que he ganado, toda la que no sea pintada ni manchada en las cabras, y de color oscuro entre las ovejas, se me habrá de tener por robada.

So later when the matter of my wages is brought before you, my fair dealing will be evident and answer for me. Every one that is not speckled and spotted among the goats and black among the sheep, if found with me, shall be counted as stolen.

34 D ijo entonces Labán: —Bien, sea como tú dices.

And Laban said, Good; let it be done as you say.

35 P ero Labán apartó aquel mismo día los machos cabríos manchados y rayados, todas las cabras manchadas y salpicadas de color, toda aquella que tenía en sí algo de blanco y todas las de color oscuro entre las ovejas, y las puso en manos de sus hijos.

But that same day removed the he-goats that were streaked and spotted and all the she-goats that were speckled and spotted, every one that had white on it, and every black lamb, and put them in charge of his sons.

36 Y puso tres días de camino entre él y Jacob. Mientras tanto, Jacob apacentaba las otras ovejas de Labán.

And he set three days’ journey between himself and Jacob; and Jacob was then left in care of the rest of Laban’s flock.

37 T omó entonces Jacob varas verdes de álamo, de avellano y de castaño, y labró en ellas unas franjas blancas, descubriendo así lo blanco de las varas.

But Jacob took fresh rods of poplar and almond and plane trees and peeled white streaks in them, exposing the white in the rods.

38 P uso las varas que había descortezado delante del ganado, en los canales de los abrevaderos adonde venían a beber agua las ovejas, las cuales procreaban cuando venían a beber.

Then he set the rods which he had peeled in front of the flocks in the watering troughs where the flocks came to drink. And since they bred and conceived when they came to drink,

39 A sí concebían las ovejas delante de las varas; y parían borregos listados, pintados y salpicados de diversos colores.

The flocks bred and conceived in sight of the rods and brought forth lambs and kids streaked, speckled, and spotted.

40 A partaba Jacob los corderos, y ponía con su propio rebaño los listados y todo lo que era oscuro del hato de Labán. Y ponía su hato aparte, no con las ovejas de Labán.

Jacob separated the lambs, and he also set the faces of the flocks toward the streaked and all the dark in the flock of Laban; and he put his own droves by themselves and did not let them breed with Laban’s flock.

41 Y sucedía que cuantas veces se hallaban en celo las ovejas más fuertes, Jacob ponía las varas delante de ellas en los abrevaderos, para que concibieran a la vista de las varas.

And whenever the stronger animals were breeding, Jacob laid the rods in the watering troughs before the eyes of the flock, that they might breed and conceive among the rods.

42 P ero cuando venían las ovejas más débiles, no las ponía; así, las más débiles eran para Labán y las más fuertes para Jacob.

But when the sheep and goats were feeble, he omitted putting the rods there; so the feebler animals were Laban’s and the stronger Jacob’s.

43 Y se enriqueció Jacob muchísimo, y tuvo muchas ovejas, siervas y siervos, camellos y asnos.

Thus the man increased and became exceedingly rich, and had many sheep and goats, and maidservants, menservants, camels, and donkeys.
