Do you know the time when the wild goats of the rock bring forth ? do you observe when the hinds are giving birth?

Can you number the months that they carry their offspring? Or do you know the time when they are delivered,

3 S e encorvan, hacen salir a sus hijos y pasan sus dolores.

When they bow themselves, bring forth their young ones, cast out their pains?

4 S us hijos se robustecen y crecen con el pasto; luego se van y ya no regresan.

Their young ones become strong, they grow up in the open field; they go forth and return not to them.

5 » ¿Quién dio libertad al asno montés? ¿Quién soltó sus ataduras?

Who has sent out the wild donkey, giving him his freedom? Or who has loosed the bands of the swift donkey,

6 Y o le di por casa el desierto, puse su morada en lugares estériles.

Whose home I have made the wilderness, and the salt land his dwelling place?

7 É l se burla del bullicio de la ciudad y no oye las voces del arriero.

He scorns the tumult of the city and hears not the shoutings of the taskmaster.

8 E n lo escondido de los montes está su pasto y anda buscando toda cosa verde.

The range of the mountains is his pasture, and he searches after every green thing.

9 » ¿Querrá el búfalo servirte a ti o quedarse en tu pesebre?

Will the wild ox be willing to serve you, or remain beside your manger?

10 ¿ Atarás tú al búfalo con coyunda para abrir el surco? ¿Irá en pos de ti labrando los valles?

Can you bind the wild ox with a harness to the plow in the furrow? Or will he harrow the furrows for you?

11 ¿ Confiarás en él porque es grande su fuerza? ¿Le encomendarías tu labor?

Will you trust him because his strength is great, or to him will you leave your labor?

12 ¿ Lo dejarías recoger el grano y juntarlo en tu era?

Will you depend upon him to bring home your seed and gather the grain of your threshing floor?

13 » ¿Le has dado tú al pavo real sus hermosas alas, o sus alas y plumas al avestruz?

The wings of the ostrich wave proudly, are they the pinions and plumage of love?

14 É ste desampara en la tierra sus huevos, los calienta sobre el polvo

The ostrich leaves her eggs on the ground and warms them in the dust,

15 y olvida que el pie los puede pisar y que una fiera del campo puede aplastarlos.

Forgetting that a foot may crush them or that the wild beast may trample them.

16 E s duro para con sus crías, como si no fueran suyas, y no teme que su trabajo haya sido en vano,

She is hardened against her young ones, as though they were not hers; her labor is in vain because she has no sense of danger,

17 p orque Dios lo privó de sabiduría y no le dio inteligencia.

For God has deprived her of wisdom, neither has He imparted to her understanding.

18 S in embargo, en cuanto se levanta para correr, se burla del caballo y de su jinete.

Yet when she lifts herself up in flight, she can laugh to scorn the horse and his rider.

19 » ¿Le das tú su fuerza al caballo? ¿Cubres tú su cuello de crines ondulantes?

Have you given the horse his might? Have you clothed his neck with quivering and a shaking mane?

20 ¿ Lo harás temblar tú como a una langosta? El resoplido de su nariz es formidable.

Was it you who made him to leap like a locust? The majesty of his nostrils is terrible.

21 E scarba la tierra, se alegra en su fuerza y sale al encuentro de las armas.

He paws in the valley and exults in his strength; he goes out to meet the weapons.

22 H ace burla del miedo; no teme ni vuelve el rostro delante de la espada.

He mocks at fear and is not dismayed or terrified; neither does he turn back from the sword.

23 S obre él resuenan la aljaba, el hierro de la lanza y de la jabalina;

The quiver rattles upon him, as do the glittering spear and the lance.

24 p ero él, con ímpetu y furor, escarba la tierra y no lo detiene ni el sonar de la trompeta;

devour the ground with fierceness and rage; neither can he stand still at the sound of the trumpet.

25 m ás bien, en medio de los clarines parece decir: “¡Ea!” Desde lejos huele la batalla, el grito de los capitanes y el vocerío.

As often as the trumpet sounds he says, Ha, ha! And he smells the battle from afar, the thunder of the captains, and the shouting.

26 » ¿Acaso por tu sabiduría vuela el gavilán y extiende hacia el sur sus alas?

Is it by your wisdom that the hawk soars and stretches her wings toward the south ?

27 ¿ Se remonta el águila por tu mandato y pone en alto su nido?

Does the eagle mount up at your command and make his nest on high ?

28 E lla habita y mora en la peña, en la cumbre del peñasco y de la roca.

On the cliff he dwells and remains securely, upon the point of the rock and the stronghold.

29 D esde allí acecha la presa que sus ojos observan desde muy lejos.

From there he spies out the prey; and his eyes see it afar off.

30 S us polluelos chupan la sangre; donde haya cadáveres, allí está ella.»

His young ones suck up blood, and where the slain are, there is he.
