1 S alió Jesús de allí y vino a su tierra, y lo seguían sus discípulos.

Jesus went away from there and came to His country and hometown, and His disciples followed Him.

2 C uando llegó el sábado, comenzó a enseñar en la sinagoga; y muchos, oyéndolo, se admiraban y preguntaban: —¿De dónde saca éste estas cosas? ¿Y qué sabiduría es ésta que le es dada, y estos milagros que por sus manos son hechos?

And on the Sabbath He began to teach in the synagogue; and many who listened to Him were utterly astonished, saying, Where did this Man acquire all this? What is the wisdom given to Him? What mighty works and exhibitions of power are wrought by His hands!

3 ¿ No es éste el carpintero, hijo de María, hermano de Jacobo, de José, de Judas y de Simón? ¿No están también aquí con nosotros sus hermanas? Y se escandalizaban de él.

Is not this the Carpenter, the son of Mary and the brother of James and Joses and Judas and Simon? And are not His sisters here among us? And they took offense at Him and were hurt '> disapproved of Him, and it hindered them from acknowledging His authority] and they were caused to stumble and fall.

4 P ero Jesús les dijo: —No hay profeta sin honra sino en su propia tierra, entre sus parientes y en su casa.

But Jesus said to them, A prophet is not without honor (deference, reverence) except in his country and among relatives and in his house.

5 N o pudo hacer allí ningún milagro, salvo que sanó a unos pocos enfermos poniendo sobre ellos las manos.

And He was not able to do even one work of power there, except that He laid His hands on a few sickly people cured them.

6 Y estaba asombrado de la incredulidad de ellos. Misión de los doce discípulos Y recorría las aldeas de alrededor, enseñando.

And He marveled because of their unbelief (their lack of faith in Him). And He went about among the surrounding villages and continued teaching.

7 D espués llamó a los doce y comenzó a enviarlos de dos en dos, y les dio autoridad sobre los espíritus impuros.

And He called to Him the Twelve and began to send them out two by two and gave them authority and power over the unclean spirits.

8 L es mandó que no llevaran nada para el camino, sino solamente bastón. Ni bolsa, ni pan, ni dinero en el cinto;

He charged them to take nothing for their journey except a walking stick—no bread, no wallet for a collection bag, no money in their belts (girdles, purses)—

9 s ino que calzaran sandalias y no llevaran dos túnicas.

But to go with sandals on their feet and not to put on two tunics (undergarments).

10 Y añadió: —Dondequiera que entréis en una casa, posad en ella hasta que salgáis de aquel lugar.

And He told them, Wherever you go into a house, stay there until you leave that place.

11 Y si en algún lugar no os reciben ni os oyen, salid de allí y sacudid el polvo que está debajo de vuestros pies, para testimonio a ellos. De cierto os digo que en el día del juicio será más tolerable el castigo para los de Sodoma y Gomorra que para aquella ciudad.

And if any community will not receive and accept and welcome you, and they refuse to listen to you, when you depart, shake off the dust that is on your feet, for a testimony against them. Truly I tell you, it will be more tolerable for Sodom and Gomorrah in the judgment day than for that town.

12 Y , saliendo, predicaban que los hombres se arrepintieran.

So they went out and preached that men should repent '> that they should change their minds for the better and heartily amend their ways, with abhorrence of their past sins].

13 Y echaban fuera muchos demonios, ungían con aceite a muchos enfermos y los sanaban. Muerte de Juan el Bautista

And they drove out many unclean spirits and anointed with oil many who were sick and cured them.

14 O yó el rey Herodes la fama de Jesús, porque su nombre se había hecho notorio, y dijo: —Juan el Bautista ha resucitado de los muertos, y por eso actúan en él estos poderes.

King Herod heard of it, for name had become well known. He and they said, John the Baptist has been raised from the dead; that is why these mighty powers '> of performing miracles] are at work in Him.

15 O tros decían: «Es Elías.» Y otros: «Es un profeta, como los profetas antiguos.»

others kept saying, It is Elijah! And others said, It is a prophet, like one of the prophets.

16 A l oír esto, Herodes dijo: —Éste es Juan, el que yo decapité, que ha resucitado de los muertos.

But when Herod heard, he said, '> This very] John, whom I beheaded, has been raised.

17 E l mismo Herodes había enviado a prender a Juan, y lo había encadenado en la cárcel por causa de Herodías, mujer de Felipe, su hermano, pues la había tomado por mujer,

For Herod himself had sent and seized John and bound him in prison for the sake of Herodias, his brother Philip’s wife, because he had married her.

18 p orque Juan había dicho a Herodes: «No te está permitido tener la mujer de tu hermano.»

For John had told Herod, It is not lawful and you have no right to have your brother’s wife.

19 P or eso, Herodías lo acechaba y deseaba matarlo; pero no podía,

And Herodias was angry (enraged) with him and held a grudge against him and wanted to kill him; but she could not,

20 p orque Herodes temía a Juan, sabiendo que era un hombre justo y santo, y lo protegía. Cuando lo oía, se quedaba muy perplejo, pero lo escuchaba de buena gana.

For Herod had '> a reverential] fear of John, knowing that he was a righteous and holy man, and kept him safe '> under guard]. When he heard, he was much perplexed; and he heard him gladly.

21 L legó el día oportuno cuando Herodes, en la fiesta de su cumpleaños, daba una cena a sus príncipes y tribunos y a los altos dignatarios de Galilea.

But an opportune time came when Herod on his birthday gave a banquet for his nobles and the high military commanders and chief men of Galilee.

22 E ntró la hija de Herodías y danzó, y agradó a Herodes y a los que estaban con él a la mesa. El rey entonces dijo a la muchacha: —Pídeme lo que quieras y yo te lo daré.

For when the daughter of Herodias herself came in and danced, she pleased and fascinated Herod and his guests; and the king said to the girl, Ask me for whatever you desire, and I will give it to you.

23 Y le juró: —Todo lo que me pidas te daré, hasta la mitad de mi reino.

And he put himself under oath to her, Whatever you ask me, I will give it to you, even to the half of my kingdom.

24 S aliendo ella, dijo a su madre: —¿Qué pediré? Y ésta le dijo: —La cabeza de Juan el Bautista.

Then she left the room and said to her mother, What shall I ask for ? And she replied, The head of John the Baptist!

25 E ntonces ella entró apresuradamente ante el rey, y pidió diciendo: —Quiero que ahora mismo me des en un plato la cabeza de Juan el Bautista.

And she rushed back instantly to the king and requested, saying, I wish you to give me right now the head of John the Baptist on a platter.

26 E l rey se entristeció mucho, pero a causa del juramento y de los que estaban con él a la mesa, no quiso desairarla.

And the king was deeply pained and grieved and exceedingly sorry, but because of his oaths and his guests, he did not want to slight her.

27 E n seguida el rey, enviando a uno de la guardia, mandó que fuera traída la cabeza de Juan.

And immediately the king sent off one of his bodyguard and gave him orders to bring head. He went and beheaded him in the prison

28 E l guarda fue y lo decapitó en la cárcel, trajo su cabeza en un plato y la dio a la muchacha, y la muchacha la dio a su madre.

And brought his head on a platter and handed it to the girl, and the girl gave it to her mother.

29 C uando oyeron esto sus discípulos, vinieron y tomaron su cuerpo, y lo pusieron en un sepulcro. Alimentación de los cinco mil

When his disciples learned of it, they came and took body and laid it in a tomb.

30 E ntonces los apóstoles se reunieron con Jesús y le contaron todo lo que habían hecho y lo que habían enseñado.

The apostles came back and gathered together to Jesus, and told Him all that they had done and taught.

31 É l les dijo: —Venid vosotros aparte, a un lugar desierto, y descansad un poco. (Eran muchos los que iban y venían, de manera que ni aun tenían tiempo para comer.)

And He said to them, '> As for you] come away by yourselves to a deserted place, and rest a while—for many were coming and going, and they had not even leisure enough to eat.

32 Y se fueron solos en una barca a un lugar desierto.

And they went away in a boat to a solitary place by themselves.

33 P ero muchos los vieron ir y lo reconocieron; entonces muchos fueron allá a pie desde las ciudades, y llegaron antes que ellos, y se juntaron a él.

Now many saw them going and recognized them, and they ran there on foot from all the surrounding towns, and they got there ahead.

34 S alió Jesús y vio una gran multitud, y tuvo compasión de ellos, porque eran como ovejas que no tenían pastor; y comenzó a enseñarles muchas cosas.

As Jesus landed, He saw a great crowd waiting, and He was moved with compassion for them, because they were like sheep without a shepherd; and He began to teach them many things.

35 C uando ya era muy avanzada la hora, sus discípulos se acercaron a él, y le dijeron: —El lugar es desierto y la hora ya muy avanzada.

And when the day was already far gone, His disciples came to Him and said, This is a desolate and isolated place, and the hour is now late.

36 D espídelos para que vayan a los campos y aldeas de alrededor y compren pan, pues no tienen qué comer.

Send the crowds away to go into the country and villages round about and buy themselves something to eat.

37 R espondiendo él, les dijo: —Dadles vosotros de comer. Ellos le dijeron: —¿Quieres que vayamos y compremos pan por doscientos denarios y les demos de comer?

But He replied to them, Give them something to eat yourselves. And they said to Him, Shall we go and buy 200 denarii worth of bread and give it to them to eat?

38 É l les preguntó: —¿Cuántos panes tenéis? Id a ver. Y al saberlo, dijeron: —Cinco, y dos peces.

And He said to them, How many loaves do you have? Go and see. And when they knew, they said, Five and two fish.

39 E ntonces les mandó que hicieran recostar a todos por grupos sobre la hierba verde.

Then He commanded the people all to recline on the green grass by companies.

40 S e recostaron por grupos, de ciento en ciento, y de cincuenta en cincuenta.

So they threw themselves down in ranks of hundreds and fifties '> regularity of an arrangement of beds of herbs, looking like so many garden plots].

41 E ntonces tomó los cinco panes y los dos peces y, levantando los ojos al cielo, bendijo, y partió los panes y dio a sus discípulos para que los pusieran delante; también repartió los dos peces entre todos.

And taking the five loaves and two fish, He looked up to heaven and, praising God, gave thanks and broke the loaves and kept on giving them to the disciples to set before the people; and He divided the two fish among all.

42 C omieron todos y se saciaron.

And they all ate and were satisfied.

43 Y recogieron, de los pedazos y de lo que sobró de los peces, doce cestas llenas.

And they took up twelve '> small hand] baskets full of broken pieces and of the fish.

44 L os que comieron eran cinco mil hombres. Jesús anda sobre el mar

And those who ate the loaves were 5, 000 men.

45 E n seguida hizo a sus discípulos entrar en la barca e ir delante de él a Betsaida, en la otra ribera, entre tanto que él despedía a la multitud.

And at once He insisted that the disciples get into the boat and go ahead of Him to the other side to Bethsaida, while He was sending the throng away.

46 Y después que los despidió, se fue al monte a orar.

And after He had taken leave of them, He went off into the hills to pray.

47 A l llegar la noche, la barca estaba en medio del mar, y él solo en tierra.

Now when evening had come, the boat was out in the middle of the lake, and He was by Himself on the land.

48 V iéndolos remar con gran esfuerzo, porque el viento les era contrario, cerca de la cuarta vigilia de la noche vino a ellos andando sobre el mar, y quería adelantárseles.

And having seen that they were troubled and tormented in rowing, for the wind was against them, about the fourth watch of the night He came to them, walking on the sea. And He acted as if He meant to pass by them,

49 V iéndolo ellos andar sobre el mar, pensaron que era un fantasma y gritaron,

But when they saw Him walking on the sea they thought it was a ghost, and raised a shriek of terror.

50 p orque todos lo veían, y se asustaron. Pero en seguida habló con ellos, y les dijo: —¡Tened ánimo! Soy yo, no temáis.

For they all saw Him and were agitated (troubled and filled with fear and dread). But immediately He talked with them and said, Take heart! I Am! Stop being alarmed and afraid.

51 S ubió a la barca con ellos, y se calmó el viento. Ellos se asustaron mucho, y se maravillaban,

And He went up into the boat with them, and the wind ceased ( sank to rest as if exhausted by its own beating). And they were astonished exceedingly,

52 p ues aún no habían entendido lo de los panes, por cuanto estaban endurecidos sus corazones. Jesús sana a los enfermos en Genesaret

For they failed to consider or understand the loaves; their hearts had grown callous '> lost the power of understanding].

53 T erminada la travesía, vinieron a tierra de Genesaret y arribaron a la orilla.

And when they had crossed over, they reached the land of Gennesaret and came to the shore.

54 A l salir ellos de la barca, en seguida la gente lo reconoció.

As soon as they got out of the boat, recognized Him,

55 M ientras recorrían toda la tierra de alrededor, comenzaron a traer de todas partes enfermos en camillas a donde oían que estaba.

And they ran about the whole countryside, and began to carry around sick people on their sleeping pads or mats to any place where they heard that He was.

56 Y dondequiera que entraba, ya fuera en aldeas, en ciudades o en campos, ponían en las calles a los que estaban enfermos y le rogaban que los dejara tocar siquiera el borde de su manto; y todos los que lo tocaban quedaban sanos.

And wherever He came into villages or cities or the country, they would lay the sick in the marketplaces and beg Him that they might touch even the fringe of His outer garment, and as many as touched Him were restored to health.
