1 A cuérdate de tu Creador en los días de tu juventud, antes que vengan los días malos, y lleguen los años de los cuales digas: «No tengo en ellos contentamiento»;

Remember also your Creator in the days of your youth, before the evil days come or the years draw near when you will say, I have no enjoyment in them—

2 a ntes que se oscurezcan el sol y la luz, la luna y las estrellas, y vuelvan las nubes tras la lluvia;

Before the sun and the light and the moon and the stars are darkened, and the clouds return after the rain;

3 c uando tiemblen los guardias de la casa y se encorven los hombres fuertes; cuando cesen de trabajar las molineras, porque habrán disminuido, y se queden a oscuras las que miran por las ventanas;

In the day when the keepers of the house tremble, and the strong men bow themselves, and the grinders cease because they are few, and those who look out of the windows are darkened;

4 c uando las puertas de afuera se cierren, y se vaya apagando el ruido del molino; cuando se escuche la voz del ave, pero las canciones dejen de oírse;

When the doors are shut in the streets and the sound of the grinding is low, and one rises up at the voice of a bird and the crowing of a cock, and all the daughters of music are brought low;

5 c uando se tema también a las alturas, y se llene de peligros el camino, y florezca el almendro, y la langosta sea una carga, y se pierda el apetito; porque el hombre va a su morada eterna, y rondarán por las calles quienes hacen duelo;

Also when are afraid of danger from that which is high, and fears are in the way, and the almond tree blooms, and the grasshopper is a burden, and desire and appetite fail, because man goes to his everlasting home and the mourners go about the streets or marketplaces.

6 a ntes que la cadena de plata se quiebre, se rompa el cuenco de oro, el cántaro se quiebre junto a la fuente y la polea se rompa sobre el pozo;

before the silver cord is snapped apart, or the golden bowl is broken, or the pitcher is broken at the fountain, or the wheel broken at the cistern;

7 a ntes que el polvo vuelva a la tierra, como era, y el espíritu vuelva a Dios que lo dio.

Then shall the dust return to the earth as it was, and the spirit shall return to God Who gave it.

8 « ¡Vanidad de vanidades —dijo el Predicador—, todo es vanidad!» Resumen del deber del hombre

Vapor of vapors and futility of futilities, says the Preacher. All is futility (emptiness, falsity, vainglory, and transitoriness)!

9 C uanto más sabio fue el Predicador, tanto más enseñó sabiduría al pueblo. Escuchó, escudriñó y compuso muchos proverbios.

And furthermore, because the Preacher was wise, he still taught the people knowledge; and he pondered and searched out and set in order many proverbs.

10 P rocuró el Predicador hallar palabras agradables y escribir rectamente palabras de verdad.

The Preacher sought acceptable words, even to write down rightly words of truth or correct sentiment.

11 L as palabras de los sabios son como aguijones, y como clavos hincados las de los maestros de las congregaciones, pronunciadas por un pastor.

The words of the wise are like prodding goads, and firmly fixed like nails are the collected sayings which are given from one Shepherd.

12 A hora, hijo, a más de esto acepta ser amonestado. No tiene objeto escribir muchos libros; el mucho estudio es fatiga para el cuerpo.

But about going further, my son, be warned. Of making many books there is no end, and much study is a weariness of the flesh.

13 E l fin de todo el discurso que has oído es: Teme a Dios y guarda sus mandamientos, porque esto es el todo del hombre.

All has been heard; the end of the matter is: Fear God and keep His commandments, for this is the whole of man and the whole for every man.

14 P ues Dios traerá toda obra a juicio, juntamente con toda cosa oculta, sea buena o sea mala.

For God shall bring every work into judgment, with every secret thing, whether it is good or evil.
