1 M a ricordati del tuo Creatore nei giorni della tua giovinezza, prima che vengano i giorni cattivi e giungano gli anni dei quali dirai: «Non ho in essi alcun piacere»,

Remember also your Creator in the days of your youth, before the evil days come or the years draw near when you will say, I have no enjoyment in them—

2 p rima che si oscurino il sole, la luce, la luna e le stelle, e ritornino le nubi dopo la pioggia:

Before the sun and the light and the moon and the stars are darkened, and the clouds return after the rain;

3 n ell'età in cui i guardiani della casa tremano, gli uomini forti si curvano, le macinatrici smettono di lavorare perché rimaste in poche, quelli che guardano dalle finestre si oscurano

In the day when the keepers of the house tremble, and the strong men bow themselves, and the grinders cease because they are few, and those who look out of the windows are darkened;

4 e le porte sulla strada si chiudono; quando diminuisce il rumore della macina, uno si alza al canto di un uccello, e tutte le figlie del canto si affievoliscono;

When the doors are shut in the streets and the sound of the grinding is low, and one rises up at the voice of a bird and the crowing of a cock, and all the daughters of music are brought low;

5 q uando uno ha paura delle altezze e di spaventi per la strada, quando il mandorlo fiorisce, la locusta è un peso, e il desiderio viene meno, perché l'uomo va alla sua dimora eterna e i piagnoni vanno in giro per le strade.

Also when are afraid of danger from that which is high, and fears are in the way, and the almond tree blooms, and the grasshopper is a burden, and desire and appetite fail, because man goes to his everlasting home and the mourners go about the streets or marketplaces.

6 R icordati del tuo Creatore prima che il cordone d'argento si rompa, il vaso d'oro si spezzi, la brocca si rompa alla fonte e la ruota vada in frantumi al pozzo

before the silver cord is snapped apart, or the golden bowl is broken, or the pitcher is broken at the fountain, or the wheel broken at the cistern;

7 e la polvere ritorni alla terra com'era prima e lo spirito torni a DIO che lo ha dato.

Then shall the dust return to the earth as it was, and the spirit shall return to God Who gave it.

8 « Vanità delle vanità», dice il Predicatore, «tutto è vanità».

Vapor of vapors and futility of futilities, says the Preacher. All is futility (emptiness, falsity, vainglory, and transitoriness)!

9 I l Predicatore, oltre ad essere un saggio, ha anche insegnato al popolo la conoscenza e ha ponderato, ricercato e messo in ordine un gran numero di proverbi.

And furthermore, because the Preacher was wise, he still taught the people knowledge; and he pondered and searched out and set in order many proverbs.

10 I l Predicatore si è studiato di trovare parole piacevoli; e le cose scritte sono giuste e vere.

The Preacher sought acceptable words, even to write down rightly words of truth or correct sentiment.

11 L e parole dei saggi sono come pungoli e le raccolte dei dotti sono come chiodi ben piantati; esse sono date da un solo Pastore.

The words of the wise are like prodding goads, and firmly fixed like nails are the collected sayings which are given from one Shepherd.

12 F iglio mio, sta' in guardia di tutto ciò che va al di là di questo. Si scrivono tanti libri, ma non si finisce mai, e il molto studiare affatica il corpo.

But about going further, my son, be warned. Of making many books there is no end, and much study is a weariness of the flesh.

13 A scoltiamo dunque la conclusione di tutto il discorso: «Temi DIO e osserva i suoi comandamenti, perché questo è il tutto dell'uomo».

All has been heard; the end of the matter is: Fear God and keep His commandments, for this is the whole of man and the whole for every man.

14 P oiché DIO farà venire in giudizio ogni opera, anche tutto ciò che è nascosto, sia bene o male.

For God shall bring every work into judgment, with every secret thing, whether it is good or evil.
