Contend, O Lord, with those who contend with me; fight against those who fight against me!

2 P rendi lo scudo e la corazza e levati in mio aiuto.

Take hold of shield and buckler, and stand up for my help!

3 T ira fuori la lancia e sbarra il passo a quelli che mi perseguitano; dì all'anima mia: «sono la tua salvezza».

Draw out also the spear and javelin and close up the way of those who pursue and persecute me. Say to me, I am your deliverance!

4 S iano confusi e svergognati quelli che cercano la mia vita, voltino le spalle e siano confusi quelli che tramano del male contro di me.

Let them be put to shame and dishonor who seek and require my life; let them be turned back and confounded who plan my hurt!

5 S iano come pula al vento e l'angelo dell'Eterno li scacci.

Let them be as chaff before the wind, with the Angel of the Lord driving them on!

6 S ia la loro via tenebrosa e sdrucciolevole, e dell'Eterno li insegua.

Let their way be through dark and slippery places, with the Angel of the Lord pursuing and afflicting them.

7 P oiché senza motivo mi hanno teso di nascosto la loro rete; senza motivo mi hanno scavato una fossa.

For without cause they hid for me their net; a pit of destruction without cause they dug for my life.

8 U n'improvvisa rovina piombi loro addosso, siano presi nella rete che hanno nascosto e cadano nella fossa che hanno preparato per la mia rovina.

Let destruction befall unawares; let the net he hid for me catch him; let him fall into that very destruction.

9 A llora l'anima mia esulterà nell'Eterno e si rallegrerà nella sua salvezza.

Then I shall be joyful in the Lord; I shall rejoice in His deliverance.

10 T utte le mie ossa diranno: «O Eterno chi è pari a te, che liberi il misero da chi è piú forte di lui, il misero e il bisognoso da chi lo deruba?».

All my bones shall say, Lord, who is like You, You Who deliver the poor and the afflicted from him who is too strong for him, yes, the poor and the needy from him who snatches away his goods?

11 T estimoni spietati si levano contro di me e mi domandano cose delle quali non so nulla.

Malicious and unrighteous witnesses rise up; they ask me of things that I know not.

12 M i rendono male per bene, lasciando cosí sconsolata la mia vita.

They reward me evil for good to my personal bereavement.

13 E ppure, quando erano infermi, io mi vestivo di cilicio, e affliggevo l'anima mia col digiuno, e pregavo col capo chino sul petto.

But as for me, when they were sick, my clothing was sackcloth; I afflicted myself with fasting, and I prayed with head bowed on my breast.

14 A ndavo in giro, come se si trattasse di un amico o di mio fratello, andavo tutto ricurvo per il dolore, come uno che faccia cordoglio di sua madre.

I behaved as if grieving for my friend or my brother; I bowed down in sorrow, as one who bewails his mother.

15 M a quando io ho inciampato, essi si sono rallegrati e si sono radunati insieme; si sono radunati contro di me dei calunniatori, che io non conoscevo, mi hanno lacerato senza posa.

But in my stumbling and limping they rejoiced and gathered together; the smiters (slanderers and revilers) gathered against me, and I knew them not; they ceased not to slander and revile me.

16 A ssieme a dei malvagi buffoni da mensa, digrignano i denti contro di me.

Like profane mockers at feasts they gnashed at me with their teeth.

17 O Signore, fino a quando starai a guardare? Salva la mia vita dalle devastazioni da loro ordite, l'unico mio bene dalle zanne dei leoni.

Lord, how long will You look on ? Rescue my life from their destructions, my dear and only life from the lions!

18 I o ti celebrerò nella grande assemblea, ti loderò in mezzo a un popolo numeroso.

I will give You thanks in the great assembly; I will praise You among a mighty throng.

19 N on si rallegrino di me quelli che a torto mi sono nemici, non strizzino l'occhio quelli che mi odiano senza motivo.

Let not those who are wrongfully my foes rejoice over me; neither let them wink with the eye who hate me without cause.

20 p erché essi non parlano mai di pace, ma tramano inganni contro la gente pacifica del paese.

For they do not speak peace, but they devise deceitful matters against those who are quiet in the land.

21 S í, allargano la loro bocca contro di me e dicono: «Ah, ah! L'abbiamo visto con i nostri occhi».

Yes, they open their mouths wide against me; they say, Aha! Aha! Our eyes have seen it!

22 O Eterno, tu hai visto queste cose, non tacere; o Signore, non allontanarti da me.

You have seen this, O Lord; keep not silence! O Lord, be not far from me!

23 R isvegliati e destati, per farmi giustizia e per difendere la mia causa, o DIO mio e Signore mio.

Arouse Yourself, awake to the justice due me, even to my cause, my God and my Lord!

24 G iudicami secondo la tua giustizia, o Eterno, DIO mio, e fa' che essi non si rallegrino di me,

Judge and vindicate me, O Lord my God, according to Your righteousness (Your rightness and justice); and let not rejoice over me!

25 e non dicano in cuor loro: «Ah, proprio come volevamo»; e non dicano: «L'abbiamo divorato».

Let them not say in their hearts, Aha, that is what we wanted! Let them not say, We have swallowed him up and utterly destroyed him.

26 S iano svergognati e confusi tutti quelli che si rallegrano del mio male; siano coperti di vergogna e di vituperio quelli che si esaltano contro di me.

Let them be put to shame and confusion together who rejoice at my calamity! Let them be clothed with shame and dishonor who magnify and exalt themselves over me!

27 C antino e si rallegrino quelli che hanno a cuore la mia giusta causa e dicano del continuo: «Magnificato sia l'Eterno, che vuole la pace del suo servo».

Let those who favor my righteous cause and have pleasure in my uprightness shout for joy and be glad and say continually, Let the Lord be magnified, Who takes pleasure in the prosperity of His servant.

28 L a mia lingua celebrerà la tua giustizia e canterà la tua lode tutto il giorno.

And my tongue shall talk of Your righteousness, rightness, and justice, and of Your praise all the day long.
