1 O ra, due giorni dopo era la Pasqua e la festa degli Azzimi; e i capi dei sacerdoti e gli scribi cercavano il modo di prendere Gesú con inganno e ucciderlo.

It was now two days before the Passover and the Feast of Unleavened Bread, and the chief priests and the scribes were all the while seeking to arrest by secrecy and deceit and put to death,

2 M a dicevano: «Non durante la festa, perché non succeda un tumulto di popolo».

For they kept saying, It must not be during the Feast, for fear that there might be a riot of the people.

3 O ra egli, trovandosi a Betania in casa di Simone il lebbroso, mentre era a tavola, entrò una donna con un vaso di alabastro di olio profumato di autentico nardo, di grande valore; or ella, rotto il vaso di alabastro, glielo versò sul capo.

And while He was in Bethany, in the house of Simon the leper, as He was reclining, a woman came with an alabaster jar of ointment ( perfume) of pure nard, very costly and precious; and she broke the jar and poured over His head.

4 A lcuni si sdegnarono fra di loro e dissero: «Perché tutto questo spreco di olio?

But there were some who were moved with indignation and said to themselves, To what purpose was the ointment ( perfume) thus wasted?

5 P oiché si poteva vendere quest'olio per piú di trecento denari e darli ai poveri». Ed erano indignati contro di lei.

For it was possible to have sold this for more than 300 denarii and to have given to the poor. And they censured and reproved her.

6 M a Gesú disse: «Lasciatela fare; perché le date fastidio? Ella ha compiuto una buona opera verso di me.

But Jesus said, Let her alone; why are you troubling her? She has done a good and beautiful thing to Me.

7 P erché i poveri li avrete sempre con voi; e quando volete, potete far loro del bene, ma non avrete sempre me.

For you always have the poor with you, and whenever you wish you can do good to them; but you will not always have Me.

8 E lla ha fatto ciò che poteva; ha unto in anticipo il mio corpo per la sepoltura.

She has done what she could; she came beforehand to anoint My body for the burial.

9 M a in verità vi dico che in tutto il mondo, ovunque sarà predicato questo evangelo, si racconterà pure in suo ricordo ciò che costei ha fatto».

And surely I tell you, wherever the good news (the Gospel) is proclaimed in the entire world, what she has done will be told in memory of her.

10 A llora Giuda Iscariota, uno dei dodici, andò dai capi dei sacerdoti, per consegnarlo nelle loro mani.

Then Judas Iscariot, who was one of the Twelve, went off to the chief priests in order to betray and hand Him over to them.

11 E d essi, udito ciò, si rallegrarono e promisero di dargli del denaro. Cosí egli cercava un'occasione propizia per tradirlo.

And when they heard it, they rejoiced and were delighted, and they promised to give him money. And he sought an opportunity to betray Him.

12 O ra, nel primo giorno della festa degli Azzimi, quando si sacrificava la Pasqua, i suoi discepoli gli dissero: «Dove vuoi che andiamo a prepararti da mangiare la Pasqua?».

On the first day of Unleavened Bread, when they killed the Passover lamb, disciples said to Him, Where do You wish us to go prepare the Passover for You to eat?

13 A llora egli mandò due dei suoi discepoli, dicendo loro: «Andate in città e incontrerete un uomo, che porta una brocca piena d'acqua; seguitelo.

And He sent two of His disciples and said to them, Go into the city, and a man carrying an jar or pitcher of water will meet you; follow him.

14 E là dove entrerà, dite al padron di casa: "Il Maestro chiede: Dov'è la stanza in cui mangerò la Pasqua con i miei discepoli?"

And whatever he enters, say to the master of the house, The Teacher says: Where is My guest room, where I may eat the Passover with My disciples?

15 E gli allora vi mostrerà una grande sala di sopra arredata e pronta; là apparecchiate per noi».

And he will show you a large upper room, furnished and ready; there prepare for us.

16 I suoi discepoli andarono e, giunti in città, trovarono come egli aveva loro detto; e apparecchiarono la Pasqua.

Then the disciples set out and came to the city and found just as He had told them; and they prepared the Passover.

17 Q uando fu sera, egli giunse con i dodici.

And when it was evening, He came with the Twelve.

18 E , mentre erano a tavola e mangiavano, Gesú disse: «In verità vi dico che uno di voi, che mangia con me, mi tradirà».

And while they were at the table eating, Jesus said, Surely I say to you, one of you will betray Me, who is eating with Me.

19 A llora essi cominciarono a rattristarsi e a dirgli uno dopo l'altro: «Sono forse io?». E un altro disse: «Sono forse io?».

And they began to show that they were sad and hurt, and to say to Him one after another, Is it I? or, It is not I, is it?

20 E d egli, rispondendo, disse loro: «è uno dei dodici che intinge con me nel piatto.

He replied to them, It is one of the Twelve, one who is dipping into the dish with Me.

21 S i, il Figlio dell'uomo se ne va come sta scritto di lui; ma guai a quell'uomo per mezzo del quale il Figlio dell'uomo è tradito. Sarebbe stato meglio per lui, se quell'uomo non fosse mai nato!».

For the Son of Man is going as it stands written concerning Him; but woe to that man by whom the Son of Man is betrayed! It would have been good (profitable and wholesome) for that man if he had never been born.

22 E mentre essi mangiavano, Gesú prese del pane e, dopo averlo benedetto lo spezzò e lo diede loro dicendo: «Prendete, mangiate; questo è il mio corpo».

And while they were eating, He took a loaf, praised God and gave thanks and asked Him to bless it to their use. He broke and gave to them and said, Take. Eat. This is My body.

23 P oi prese il calice e rese grazie, lo diede loro, e tutti ne bevvero.

He also took a cup, and when He had given thanks, He gave to them, and they all drank of it.

24 Q uindi disse loro: «Questo è il mio sangue, il sangue del nuovo patto, che è sparso per molti.

And He said to them, This is My blood the new covenant, which is being poured out for (on account of) many.

25 I n verità vi dico che non berrò piú del frutto della vigna fino al giorno in cui lo berrò nuovo nel regno di Dio».

Solemnly and surely I tell you, I shall not again drink of the fruit of the vine till that day when I drink it of a new and a higher quality in God’s kingdom.

26 E , dopo aver cantato un inno, uscirono, dirigendosi verso il monte degli Ulivi.

And when they had sung a hymn, they went out to the Mount of Olives.

27 E Gesú disse loro: «Voi tutti sarete scandalizzati di me questa notte, perché sta scritto: "Percuoterò il Pastore e le pecore saranno disperse".

And Jesus said to them, You will all fall away this night, for it stands written, I will strike the Shepherd, and the sheep will be scattered.

28 M a dopo che sarò risuscitato, io vi precederò in Galilea».

But after I am raised, I will go before you into Galilee.

29 E Pietro gli disse: «Anche se tutti gli altri si scandalizzassero di te, io non mi scandalizzerò».

But Peter said to Him, Even if they all fall away and are caused to stumble and distrust and desert You, yet I will not!

30 E Gesú gli disse: «In verità ti dico che oggi, in questa stessa notte, prima che il gallo canti due volte, mi rinnegherai tre volte».

And Jesus said to him, Truly I tell you, this very night, before a cock crows twice, you will utterly deny Me three times.

31 M a egli con piú fermezza diceva: «Anche se dovessi morire con te, non ti rinnegherò affatto». Lo stesso dicevano pure tutti gli altri.

But said more vehemently and repeatedly, if it should be necessary for me to die with You, I will not deny or disown You! And they all kept saying the same thing.

32 P oi essi arrivarono ad un luogo chiamato Getsemani, ed egli disse ai suoi discepoli: «Sedete qui, finché io abbia pregato».

Then they went to a place called Gethsemane, and He said to His disciples, Sit down here while I pray.

33 Q uindi prese con sé Pietro, Giacomo e Giovanni, e cominciò ad essere preso da timore e angoscia;

And He took with Him Peter and James and John, and began to be struck with terror and amazement and deeply troubled and depressed.

34 e disse loro: «L'anima mia è grandemente rattristata, fino alla morte, rimanete qui e vegliate».

And He said to them, My soul is exceedingly sad (overwhelmed with grief) so that it almost kills Me! Remain here and keep awake and be watching.

35 E , andato un poco avanti, si gettò a terra e pregava che, se fosse possibile, si allontanasse da lui quell'ora.

And going a little farther, He fell on the ground and kept praying that if it were possible the '> fatal] hour might pass from Him.

36 E disse: «Abba, Padre, ogni cosa ti è possibile; allontana da me questo calice! Però non ciò che io voglio, ma ciò che tu vuoi».

And He was saying, Abba, Father, everything is possible for You. Take away this cup from Me; yet not what I will, but what You.

37 Q uindi, tornato indietro, trovò i discepoli che dormivano e disse a Pietro: «Simone, dormi? Non hai avuto la forza di vegliare una sola ora?

And He came back and found them sleeping, and He said to Peter, Simon, are you asleep? Have you not the strength to keep awake and watch one hour?

38 V egliate e pregate per non entrare in tentazione, certo lo spirito è pronto, ma la carne è debole».

Keep awake and watch and pray, that you may not enter into temptation; the spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.

39 S e ne andò di nuovo e pregò, dicendo le medesime parole.

He went away again and prayed, saying the same words.

40 R itornato, trovò i discepoli nuovamente addormentati, perché i loro occhi erano appesantiti e non sapevano che cosa rispondergli.

And again He came back and found them sleeping, for their eyes were very heavy; and they did not know what answer to give Him.

41 I nfine, ritornò per la terza volta e disse loro: «Dormite pure ora e riposatevi, basta! L'ora è giunta. Ecco, il Figlio dell'uomo è consegnato nelle mani dei peccatori.

And He came back a third time and said to them, Are you still sleeping and resting? It is enough! The hour has come. The Son of Man is betrayed into the hands of sinful men (men whose way or nature is to act in opposition to God).

42 A lzatevi, andiamo; ecco, colui che mi tradisce è vicino».

Get up, let us be going! See, My betrayer is at hand!

43 E in quell'istante, mentre egli parlava ancora, giunse Giuda, uno dei dodici, e con lui una gran turba con spade e bastoni, mandata dai capi dei sacerdoti dagli scribi e dagli anziani.

And at once, while He was still speaking, Judas came, one of the Twelve, and with him a crowd of men with swords and clubs, from the chief priests and the scribes and the elders.

44 O r chi lo tradiva aveva dato loro un segnale, dicendo: «Quello che bacerò è lui. Pigliatelo e conducetelo via sotto buona scorta».

Now the betrayer had given them a signal, saying, The One I shall kiss is; seize Him and lead away safely.

45 E , come fu giunto, subito si accostò a lui e disse: «Rabbi, Rabbi»; e lo baciò caldamente!

And when he came, he went up to Jesus immediately and said, Master! Master! and he embraced Him and kissed Him fervently.

46 E ssi allora gli misero le mani addosso e lo arrestarono.

And they threw their hands on Him and arrested Him.

47 E uno dei presenti trasse la spada, percosse il servo del sommo sacerdote e gli recise un orecchio.

But one of the bystanders drew his sword and struck the bond servant of the high priest and cut off his ear.

48 A llora Gesú, rispondendo. disse: «Siete venuti con spade e bastoni per catturarmi, come se fossi un brigante?

And Jesus said to them, Have you come out with swords and clubs as against a robber to capture Me?

49 E ppure, ogni giorno ero in mezzo a voi nel tempio ad insegnare, e voi non mi avete preso; ma questo è avvenuto perché si adempissero le Scritture!».

I was with you daily in the temple '> porches and courts] teaching, and you did not seize Me; but that the Scriptures might be fulfilled.

50 A llora i discepoli, abbandonatolo, se ne fuggirono tutti.

Then, forsaking Him, fled, all.

51 E d un certo giovane lo seguiva, avvolto in un lenzuolo sul corpo nudo, ed essi lo afferrarono.

And a young man was following Him, with nothing but a linen cloth ( sheet) thrown about naked; and they laid hold of him,

52 M a egli, lasciato il lenzuolo. se ne fuggí nudo dalle loro mani.

But, leaving behind the linen cloth ( sheet), he fled from them naked.

53 E ssi allora condussero Gesú dal sommo sacerdote, presso il quale si radunarono tutti i capi dei sacerdoti, gli anziani e gli scribi.

And they led Jesus away to the high priest, and all the chief priests and the elders and the scribes were gathered together.

54 E Pietro lo seguí da lontano fin dentro il cortile del sommo sacerdote, dove si mise a sedere con le guardie, scaldandosi vicino al fuoco.

And Peter followed Him at a distance, even right into the courtyard of the high priest. And he was sitting '> in the firelight] with the guards and warming himself at the fire.

55 O ra i capi dei sacerdoti e tutto il sinedrio, cercavano qualche testimonianza contro Gesú, per farlo morire; ma non ne trovavano.

Now the chief priests and the entire council (the Sanhedrin) were constantly seeking testimony against Jesus with a view to condemning Him and putting Him to death, but they did not find any.

56 M olti infatti deponevano il falso contro di lui; ma le loro testimonianze non erano concordi.

For many were repeatedly bearing false witness against Him, but their testimonies did not agree.

57 A llora alcuni, alzatisi, testimoniarono il falso contro di lui, dicendo:

And some stood up and were bearing false witness against Him, saying,

58 « Noi l'abbiamo udito dire: "Io distruggerò questo tempio fatto da mani, e in tre giorni ne edificherò un altro non fatto da mani"».

We heard Him say, I will destroy this temple (sanctuary) which is made with hands, and in three days I will build another, made without hands.

59 M a neppure su questo la loro testimonianza era concorde.

Still not even did their testimony agree.

60 A llora il sommo sacerdote, alzatosi in mezzo all'assemblea, interrogò Gesú, dicendo: «Non rispondi nulla? Che cosa testimoniano costoro contro di te?».

And the high priest stood up in the midst and asked Jesus, Have You not even one answer to make? What these are testifying against You?

61 M a egli tacque e non rispose nulla. Di nuovo, il sommo sacerdote lo interrogò e gli disse: «Sei tu il Cristo, il Figlio del Benedetto?».

But He kept still and did not answer at all. Again the high priest asked Him, Are You the Christ (the Messiah, the Anointed One), the Son of the Blessed?

62 E Gesú disse: «Sí, io lo sono. E voi vedrete il Figlio dell'uomo sedere alla destra della Potenza e venire con le nuvole del cielo».

And Jesus said, I Am; and you will see the Son of Man seated at the right hand of Power ( the Almighty) and coming on the clouds of heaven.

63 A llora il sommo sacerdote, stracciandosi le vesti, disse: «Che bisogno abbiamo ancora di testimoni?

Then the high priest tore his garments and said, What need have we for more witnesses?

64 A vete udito la bestemmia; che ve ne pare?». E tutti lo giudicarono reo di morte.

You have heard His blasphemy. What is your decision? And they all condemned Him as being guilty and deserving of death.

65 A llora alcuni cominciarono a sputargli addosso, a bendargli il viso, a dargli degli schiaffi ed a dirgli: «Indovina». E le guardie lo percuotevano.

And some of them began to spit on Him and to blindfold Him and to strike Him with their fists, saying to Him, Prophesy! And the guards received Him with blows and by slapping Him.

66 O r mentre Pietro era giú nel cortile, sopraggiunse una serva del sommo sacerdote.

While Peter was down below in the courtyard, one of the maids of the high priest came;

67 E , visto Pietro che si scaldava, lo guardò attentamente e disse: «Anche tu eri con Gesú Nazareno».

And when she saw Peter warming himself, she gazed intently at him and said, You were with Jesus of Nazareth too.

68 M a egli negò dicendo: «Non lo conosco e non capisco ciò che dici». Uscí quindi fuori nel vestibolo, e il gallo cantò.

But he denied it falsely and disowned Him, saying, I neither know nor understand what you say. Then he went outside into the vestibule. And a cock crowed.

69 O r la serva, vedutolo di nuovo, cominciò a dire ai presenti: «Costui è uno di loro».

And the maidservant saw him, and began again to say to the bystanders, This is of them.

70 M a egli negò ancora. E, poco dopo, i presenti dissero di nuovo a Pietro: «Veramente tu sei uno di loro; infatti sei Galileo e il tuo parlare lo rivela».

But again he denied it falsely and disowned Him. And after a short while, again the bystanders said to Peter, Really, you are one of them, for you are a Galilean and your dialect shows it.

71 M a egli cominciò a maledire e a giurare: «Io non conosco quest'uomo di cui parlate».

Then he commenced invoking a curse on himself and swearing, I do not know the Man about Whom you are talking!

72 E il gallo cantò per la seconda volta; allora Pietro si ricordò della parola che Gesú gli aveva detta: «Prima che il gallo canti due volte, mi rinnegherai tre volte». E, pensando a ciò, scoppiò a piangere.

And at once for the second time a cock crowed. And Peter remembered how Jesus said to him, Before a cock crows twice, you will utterly deny Me three times. And having put his thought upon it, he broke down and wept aloud and lamented.
