1 C ontro Moab. Cosí dice l'Eterno degli eserciti, il DIO d'Israele: «Guai a Nebo, perché è devastata; Kiriathaim è coperta di vergogna, è presa; la roccaforte è coperta di vergogna e sbigottita.

Concerning Moab: Thus says the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel: Woe to Nebo, for it is laid waste! Kiriathaim is put to shame and taken; Misgab is put to shame, broken down, and crushed.

2 L a gloria di Moab non è piú; in Heshbon tramano del male contro di lui dicendo: "Venite e distruggiamola, perché non sia piú nazione" Tu pure, o Madmen, sarai demolita, la spada ti inseguirà.

The glory of Moab is no more; in Heshbon they planned evil against her, saying, Come, let us cut her off from being a nation. You also, O Madmen, shall be brought to silence; the sword shall pursue you.

3 U na voce che implora aiuto uscirà da Horonaim: devastazione e grande rovina!

The sound of a cry from Horonaim, desolation and great destruction!

4 M oab è infranto, i suoi piccoli fanno udire le loro grida.

Moab is destroyed; her little ones have caused a cry to be heard.

5 S ulla salita di Luhith salgono piangendo amaramente, mentre nella discesa di Horonaim si ode il grido angosciato della disfatta.

For the ascent of Luhith will be climbed with continual weeping; for on the descent of Horonaim they have heard the distress of the cry of destruction.

6 F uggite, salvate la vostra vita e siate come un tamarisco nel deserto!

Flee! Save your lives! But they shall be like a destitute and forsaken person in the wilderness.

7 P oiché hai posto la tua fiducia nelle tue opere e nei tuoi tesori, anche tu sarai preso; e Kemosh andrà in cattività assieme ai suoi sacerdoti e ai suoi principi.

For because you have trusted in your works and in your treasures, you shall also be taken. And Chemosh shall go into captivity, his priests and his princes together.

8 I l devastatore verrà contro tutte le città, e nessuna città scamperà; la valle perirà e la pianura sarà distrutta, come l'Eterno ha detto.

And the destroyer shall come upon every city; no city shall escape. The valley also shall perish, and the plain shall be devastated, as the Lord has said.

9 D ate ali a Moab, perché possa volare via, le sue città diventeranno una desolazione, e piú nessuno vi abiterà.

Give wings to Moab, for she will flee and get away; her cities will be desolate, without any to dwell in them.

10 M aledetto colui che compie l'opera dell'Eterno fiaccamente, maledetto colui che trattiene la sua spada dallo spargere il sangue!

Cursed be he who does the work of the Lord negligently; and cursed be he who keeps back his sword from blood.

11 M oab è stato tranquillo fin dalla sua giovinezza, riposando sulle sue fecce, e non è stato travasato da vaso a vaso né è andato in cattività, per questo gli è rimasto il suo sapore e il suo profumo non si è alterato.

Moab has been at ease from his youth, and he has settled on his lees and has not been drawn off from one vessel to another, neither has he gone into exile. Therefore his taste remains in him, and his scent has not changed.

12 P erciò ecco, verranno i giorni», dice l'Eterno, «nei quali gli manderò dei travasatori che lo travaseranno; vuoteranno i suoi vasi e frantumeranno le sue anfore.

Therefore behold, the days are coming, says the Lord, when I shall send to tilters who shall tilt him up and shall empty his vessels and break his bottles (earthenware) in pieces.

13 A llora Moab si vergognerà di Kemosh, come la casa d'Israele si è vergognata di Bethel, in cui aveva riposto la sua fiducia.

And Moab shall be ashamed of Chemosh, as the house of Israel was ashamed of Bethel, their confidence.

14 C ome potete dire: "Noi siamo uomini forti e valorosi per la battaglia

How can you say, We are heroes and mighty men in the war?

15 M oab è devastato; le sue città salgono in fumo e i suoi giovani migliori scendono al macello», dice il Re, il cui nome è l'Eterno degli eserciti.

Moab has been made desolate, and his cities have gone up; and his chosen young men have gone down to the slaughter, says the King, Whose name is the Lord of hosts.

16 « La calamità di Moab è ormai imminente e la sua sciagura avanza velocemente.

The destruction of Moab is coming near, and his calamity hastens swiftly.

17 F ate cordoglio per lui, voi tutti che lo circondate, e tutti voi che conoscete il suo nome, dite: Come si è spezzato quel forte scettro, quel magnifico bastone?

Bemoan him, all you who are around him, and all you who know his name; say, How broken is the mighty scepter and the splendid rod!

18 O figlia che abiti in Dibon, scendi dalla tua gloria e siedi sul suolo riarso, perché il devastatore di Moab è salito contro di te, ha distrutto le tue fortezze.

Come down from your glory, you inhabitant of the Daughter of Dibon, and sit on the ground among the thirsty! For the destroyer of Moab is advancing against you; he will destroy your strongholds.

19 O tu che abiti in Aroer, fermati lungo la strada e guarda; interroga il fuggiasco e colei che scappa e domanda: Che cos'è successo?

O inhabitant of Aroer, stand by the way and watch! Ask him who flees and her who escapes, What has happened?

20 M oab è coperto di vergogna, perché è infranto; gemete e gridate, annunziate sull'Arnon che Moab è devastato!

Moab is put to shame, for she is broken down. Wail and cry out! Tell by the Arnon that Moab is laid waste (destroyed).

21 U n castigo è venuto sulla regione della pianura su Holon, su Jahats e su Mefaath,

Judgment has come upon the land of the plain—upon Holon and Jahzah and Mephaath,

22 s u Dibon, su Nebo e su Beth-Diblathaim,

And upon Dibon and Nebo and Beth-diblathaim,

23 s u Kiriathaim, su Beth-Gamul e su Beth-Meon,

And upon Kiriathaim and Beth-gamul and Beth-meon,

24 s u Kerioth, su Botsrah e su tutte le città del paese di Moab, lontane e vicine.

And upon Kerioth and Bozrah—and all the cities of the land of Moab, far and near.

25 I l corno di Moab è tagliato e il suo braccio è spezzato», dice l'Eterno.

The horn (strength) of Moab is cut off, and his arm is shattered, says the Lord.

26 « Inebriatelo, perché si è innalzato contro l'Eterno. Moab si voltolerà nel suo vomito e diventerà anch'esso oggetto di scherno.

Make him drunk, for he has magnified himself against the Lord. Moab also shall splash in his vomit, and he too shall be held in derision.

27 I sraele non è forse stato per te un oggetto di scherno? E stato forse trovato fra i ladri, che ogni volta che parli di lui scuoti la testa?

For was not Israel derision to you? Was he found among thieves—since whenever you speak of him you wag your head ?

28 A bbandonate le città e andate ad abitare nella roccia, o abitanti di Moab, e siate come la colomba che fa il suo nido sulle pareti che sovrastano un precipizio.

O you inhabitants of Moab, leave the cities and dwell among the rocks, and be like the dove that makes her nest in the walls of the yawning ravine.

29 A bbiamo udito l'orgoglio di Moab, estremamente orgoglioso, la sua altezzosità, la sua superbia, la sua arroganza e l'alterigia del suo cuore.

We have heard of the pride of Moab, the extremely proud one—his loftiness, his arrogance, his conceit, and the haughtiness of his heart.

30 I O conosco la sua rabbia», dice l'Eterno, «che però non ha consistenza, il suo vantarsi che non ha approdato a nulla.

I know his insolent wrath, says the Lord, and the nothingness of his boastings and his deeds; they are false and have accomplished nothing.

31 P erciò io innalzo un lamento su Moab e manderò grida per tutto Moab; si gemerà per gli uomini di Kir-Heres.

Therefore I will wail over Moab, and I will cry out over the whole of Moab. Over the men of Kir-heres (Kir-hareseth) there will be sighing and mourning.

32 O vigna di Sibmah, io piango per te come si piange per Jazer; i tuoi tralci sono giunti oltre il mare, arrivavano fino al mare di Jazer. Il devastatore è piombato sui tuoi frutti d'estate e sulla tua vendemmia.

O vines of Sibmah, I weep for you more than the weeping of Jazer. Your tendrils have gone over the sea, reaching even to Jazer. The destroyer has fallen upon your summer fruit harvest and your crop of grapes.

33 L a gioia e l'allegrezza sono scomparse dalla fertile campagna e dal paese di Moab; ho fatto scomparire il vino dai tini, nessuno piú pigia con grida di gioia. Le loro grida non sono piú grida di gioia.

Joy and gladness are taken away from the fruitful orchards and fields and from the land of Moab. And I have made the juice to fail from what is pressed out in the vats; no one treads with shouting. Their shouting is no shouting.

34 A motivo del grido di Heshbon la loro voce s'è udita fino a Elealeh e a Jahats, da Tsoar fino a Horonaim, come una giovenca di tre anni; perfino le acque di Nimrim sono divenute una desolazione.

From the cry of Heshbon even to Elealeh even to Jahaz have they uttered their voice, from Zoar even to Horonaim and Eglath-shelishiyah, for even the waters of Nimrim have become desolations.

35 I O farò venir meno in Moab», dice l'Eterno, «chi offre sacrifici sugli alti luoghi e chi brucia incenso ai suoi dei.

Moreover, I will cause to cease in Moab, says the Lord, the one who ascends and offers in the high place and the one who burns incense to his gods.

36 P erciò il mio cuore per Moab gemerà come i flauti, il mio cuore gemerà come i flauti per gli uomini di Kirheres, perché la ricchezza che hanno acquistato è andata perduta.

Therefore My heart moans and sighs for Moab like flutes, and My heart moans and sighs like flutes for the men of Kir-heres (Kir-hareseth); therefore the abundant riches they gained has perished.

37 P oiché ogni testa sarà rasata, ogni barba sarà tagliata, su tutte le mani ci saranno incisioni e sui fianchi il sacco.

For every head is shaven bald and every beard cut off: upon all the hands are cuts (slashes) and upon the loins is sackcloth.

38 s u tutti i tetti di Moab e nelle sue piazze è tutto un lamento, perché io ho frantumato Moab, come un vaso che non ha piú alcun valore», dice l'Eterno.

On all the housetops of Moab and in its streets there is lamentation everywhere, for I have broken Moab like a vessel in which there is no pleasure, says the Lord.

39 « Gemeranno dicendo: Com'è stato infranto! Come Moab ha voltato vergognosamente le spalle! Cosí Moab è diventato lo scherno e lo spavento di tutti quelli che gli stanno attorno.

How it is broken down! How they wail! How Moab has turned his back in shame! So Moab has become a derision and a terror to all who are round about him.

40 P oiché cosí dice l'Eterno: «Ecco, egli spiccherà il volo come un'aquila e spiegherà le sue ali verso Moab.

For thus says the Lord: Behold, he shall fly swiftly like an eagle and shall spread out his wings against Moab.

41 K erioth è presa, le fortezze sono occupate e il cuore dei prodi di Moab in quel giorno sarà come il cuore di una donna nelle doglie di parto.

Kerioth shall be taken and the strongholds seized; and the hearts of the mighty warriors of Moab in that day shall be as the heart of a woman in her pangs.

42 M oab sarà distrutto, non sarà piú popolo, perché si è innalzato contro l'Eterno.

And Moab shall be destroyed from being a nation, because he has magnified himself against the Lord.

43 S pavento, fossa, laccio ti sovrastano, o abitante di Moab», dice l'Eterno.

Terror and pit and snare are before you, O inhabitant of Moab, says the Lord.

44 « Chi fugge davanti allo spavento cadrà nella fossa e chi esce dalla fossa sarà preso nel laccio, perche farò venire su di lui, su Moab, l'anno della sua punizione», dice l'Eterno.

He who flees from the terror will fall into the pit, and he who gets up out of the pit will be taken and caught in the trap or snare; for I will bring upon it, even upon Moab, the year of their visitation (their inspection and infliction of punishment), says the Lord.

45 « All'ombra di Heshbon si fermano spossati i fuggiaschi, ma un fuoco esce da Heshbona e una fiamma di mezzo a Sihon, che divora i fianchi di Moab e la sommità del capo degli uomini tumultuanti.

In the shadow of Heshbon the fugitives stand powerless (stopped in their tracks, helpless and without strength), for a fire has gone forth from Heshbon, a flame from the midst of Sihon; it has destroyed the corner of Moab and the crowns of the heads of the ones in tumult.

46 G uai a te, o Moab! Il popolo di Kemosh è perduto, perché i tuoi figli son portati in cattività e le tue figlie in esilio.

Woe to you, O Moab! The people of Chemosh are undone; for your sons are taken away captive and your daughters into captivity.

47 M a io farò tornare Moab dalla cattività negli ultimi giorni dice l'Eterno». Fin qui il giudizio su Moab.

Yet will I reverse the captivity and restore the fortunes of Moab in the latter days, says the Lord. Thus far is the judgment on Moab.
