1 O r vi era in Cesarea un certo uomo di nome Cornelio, centurione della coorte, detta Italica;

Now at Caesarea there was a man whose name was Cornelius, a centurion (captain) of what was known as the Italian Regiment,

2 e gli era un uomo pio e timorato di Dio con tutta la sua casa, faceva molte elemosine al popolo e pregava Dio del continuo.

A devout man who venerated God and treated Him with reverential obedience, as did all his household; and he gave much alms to the people and prayed continually to God.

3 E gli vide chiaramente in visione, verso l'ora nona del giorno, un angelo di Dio che entrò da lui e gli disse: «Cornelio!».

About the ninth hour (about 3: 00 p. m.) of the day he saw clearly in a vision an angel of God entering and saying to him, Cornelius!

4 E d egli, guardandolo fisso e tutto spaventato, disse: «Che c'è, Signore?». Allora l'angelo gli disse: «Le tue preghiere e le tue elemosine sono salite davanti a Dio, come una ricordanza;

And he, gazing intently at him, became frightened and said, What is it, Lord? And the angel said to him, Your prayers and your gifts to the poor have come up to God and have been remembered by Him.

5 o r dunque manda degli uomini a Ioppe e fa' chiamare Simone, soprannominato Pietro.

And now send men to Joppa and have them call for and invite here a certain Simon whose surname is Peter;

6 E gli si trova presso un certo Simone, conciatore di pelli, che ha la casa vicino al mare; egli ti dirà ciò che devi fare».

He is lodging with Simon a tanner, whose house is by the seaside.

7 A ppena l'angelo che gli parlava se ne fu andato, Cornelio chiamò due dei suoi domestici e un soldato fidato, di quelli addetti al suo personale servizio

When the angel who spoke to him had left, Cornelius called two of his servants and a God-fearing soldier from among his own personal attendants.

8 r accontò loro ogni cosa e li mandò a Ioppe.

And having rehearsed everything to them, he sent them to Joppa.

9 I l giorno seguente, mentre essi erano in cammino e si avvicinavano alla città, Pietro salí sul terrazzo della casa, verso l'ora sesta per pregare.

The next day as they were still on their way and were approaching the town, Peter went up to the roof of the house to pray, about the sixth hour (noon).

10 O r gli venne fame e desiderava prendere cibo; e mentre quelli di casa glielo preparavano, fu rapito in estasi;

But he became very hungry, and wanted something to eat; and while the meal was being prepared a trance came over him,

11 e vide il cielo aperto e scendere verso di lui un oggetto simile ad un gran lenzuolo, tenuto ai quattro capi e che veniva calato a terra.

And he saw the sky opened and something like a great sheet lowered by the four corners, descending to the earth.

12 d entro il quale vi erano tutte le specie di quadrupedi, di fiere, di rettili terrestri e di uccelli del cielo.

It contained all kinds of quadrupeds and wild beasts and creeping things of the earth and birds of the air.

13 E una voce gli disse: «Pietro, alzati, ammazza e mangia!».

And there came a voice to him, saying, Rise up, Peter, kill and eat.

14 M a Pietro rispose: «Niente affatto, Signore, poiché io non ho mai mangiato nulla di impuro e di contaminato».

But Peter said, No, by no means, Lord; for I have never eaten anything that is common and unhallowed or unclean.

15 E la voce gli disse per la seconda volta: «Le cose che Dio ha purificate, tu non farle impure».

And the voice came to him again a second time, What God has cleansed and pronounced clean, do not you defile and profane by regarding and calling common and unhallowed or unclean.

16 O r questo avvenne per tre volte; poi l'oggetto fu di nuovo ritirato in cielo.

This occurred three times; then immediately the sheet was taken up to heaven.

17 E , come Pietro si chiedeva perplesso che cosa potesse significare la visione che aveva avuto, ecco che gli uomini mandati da Cornelio, informatisi della casa di Simone, si presentarono alla porta.

Now Peter was still inwardly perplexed and doubted as to what the vision which he had seen could mean, when behold the messengers that were sent by Cornelius, who had made inquiry for Simon’s house, stopped and stood before the gate.

18 E , chiamato qualcuno, domandarono se Simone, soprannominato Pietro, si trovasse lí.

And they called out to inquire whether Simon who was surnamed Peter was staying there.

19 M entre Pietro stava riflettendo sulla visione, lo Spirito gli disse: «Ecco, tre uomini ti cercano.

And while Peter was earnestly revolving the vision in his mind and meditating on it, the Spirit said to him, Behold, three men are looking for you!

20 A lzati dunque, scendi e va' con loro senza alcuna esitazione, perché sono io che li ho mandati».

Get up and go below and accompany them without any doubt or any discrimination or hesitation, for I have sent them.

21 A llora Pietro scese dagli uomini che gli erano stati mandati da Cornelio e disse loro: «Ecco, sono io quello che cercate; qual è il motivo per cui siete qui?».

Then Peter went down to the men and said, I am the man you seek; what is the purpose of your coming?

22 E d essi dissero: «Il centurione Cornelio, uomo giusto e timorato di Dio, di cui rende buona testimonianza tutta la nazione dei Giudei, è stato divinamente avvertito da un santo angelo di farti chiamare in casa sua e di ascoltare ciò che avrai da dirgli».

And they said, Cornelius, a centurion (captain) who is just and upright and in right standing with God, being God-fearing and obedient and well spoken of by the whole Jewish nation, has been instructed by a holy angel to send for you to come to his house; and he has received in answer a warning to listen to and act upon what you have to say.

23 A llora Pietro li invitò ad entrare e li ospitò; poi, il giorno seguente andò con loro; e alcuni dei fratelli di Ioppe lo accompagnarono.

So Peter invited them in to be his guests. The next day he arose and went away with them, and some of the brethren from Joppa accompanied him.

24 I l giorno dopo entrarono in Cesarea. Or Cornelio li stava aspettando e aveva radunato i suoi parenti e i suoi intimi amici.

And on the following day they entered Caesarea. Cornelius was waiting for and expecting them, and he had invited together his relatives and his intimate friends.

25 C ome Pietro entrava, Cornelio gli andò incontro, gli si gettò ai piedi e l'adorò.

As Peter arrived, Cornelius met him, and falling down at his feet he made obeisance and paid worshipful reverence to him.

26 M a Pietro lo rialzò, dicendo: «Alzati, sono anch'io un uomo»

But Peter raised him up, saying, Get up; I myself am also a man.

27 E , conversando con lui, entrò e trovò molte persone radunate.

And as spoke with him, he entered the house and found a large group of persons assembled;

28 E d egli disse loro: «Voi sapete come non è lecito a un Giudeo associarsi a uno straniero, o entrare in casa sua; ma Dio mi ha mostrato di non chiamare nessun uomo impuro o contaminato.

And he said to them, You yourselves are aware how it is not lawful or permissible for a Jew to keep company with or to visit or to come near or to speak first to anyone of another nationality, but God has shown and taught me by words that I should not call any human being common or unhallowed or unclean.

29 P erciò, appena sono stato invitato a venire, sono venuto senza obiettare. Ora vi domando: per quale motivo mi avete mandato a chiamare?».

Therefore when I was sent for, I came without hesitation or objection or misgivings. So now I ask for what reason you sent for me.

30 E Cornelio rispose: «Quattro giorni fa avevo digiunato fino a quest'ora, e all'ora nona pregavo in casa mia, quand'ecco un uomo si presentò davanti a me in veste risplendente,

And Cornelius said, This is now the fourth day since about this time I was observing the ninth hour (three o’clock in the afternoon) of prayer in my lodging place; a man stood before me in dazzling apparel,

31 e disse: "Cornelio, la tua preghiera è stata esaudita e le tue elemosine sono state ricordate davanti a Dio.

And he said, Cornelius, your prayer has been heard and harkened to, and your donations to the poor have been known and preserved before God.

32 M anda dunque qualcuno a Ioppe e fa' chiamare Simone, soprannominato Pietro; egli si trova in casa di Simone conciatore di pelli, presso il mare; e, venuto che sarà, egli ti parlerà".

Send therefore to Joppa and ask for Simon who is surnamed Peter; he is staying in the house of Simon the tanner by the seaside.

33 C osí mandai subito a chiamarti, e tu hai fatto bene a venire; ora noi siamo tutti qui alla presenza di Dio per udire tutte le cose che Dio ti ha comandato».

So at once I sent for you, and you have done a kind and courteous and handsome thing in coming. Now then, we are all present in the sight of God to listen to all that you have been instructed by the Lord to say.

34 A llora Pietro, aperta la bocca disse: «In verità io comprendo che Dio non usa alcuna parzialità;

And Peter opened his mouth and said: Most certainly and thoroughly I now perceive and understand that God shows no partiality and is no respecter of persons,

35 m a in qualunque nazione chi lo teme e opera giustamente, gli è gradito.

But in every nation he who venerates and has a reverential fear for God, treating Him with worshipful obedience and living uprightly, is acceptable to Him and sure of being received and welcomed.

36 s econdo la parola che egli ha dato ai figli d'Israele, annunziando la pace per mezzo di Gesú Cristo, che è il Signore di tutti

You know the contents of the message which He sent to Israel, announcing the good news (Gospel) of peace by Jesus Christ, Who is Lord of all—

37 V oi sapete ciò che è accaduto per tutta la Giudea, cominciando dalla Galilea, dopo il battesimo che Giovanni predicò:

The message which was proclaimed throughout all Judea, starting from Galilee after the baptism preached by John—

38 c ome Dio abbia unto di Spirito Santo e di potenza Gesú di Nazaret, il quale andò attorno facendo del bene e sanando tutti coloro che erano oppressi dal diavolo, perché Dio era con lui.

How God anointed and consecrated Jesus of Nazareth with the Spirit and with strength and ability and power; how He went about doing good and, in particular, curing all who were harassed and oppressed by the devil, for God was with Him.

39 E noi siamo testimoni di tutte le cose che egli ha fatto nel paese dei Giudei e in Gerusalemme; e come essi lo uccisero, appendendolo a un legno.

And we are witnesses of everything that He did both in the land of the Jews and in Jerusalem. And they put Him out of the way (murdered Him) by hanging Him on a tree;

40 M a Dio lo ha risuscitato il terzo giorno e ha fatto sí che si manifestasse,

But God raised Him to life on the third day and caused Him to be manifest (to be plainly seen),

41 n on già a tutto il popolo, ma ai testimoni preordinati da Dio, a noi, che abbiamo mangiato e bevuto con lui, dopo che è risuscitato dai morti.

Not by all the people but to us who were chosen (designated) beforehand by God as witnesses, who ate and drank with Him after He arose from the dead.

42 O r egli ci ha comandato di predicare al popolo e di testimoniare che egli è colui che Dio ha costituito giudice dei vivi e dei morti,

And He charged us to preach to the people and to bear solemn testimony that He is the God-appointed and God-ordained Judge of the living and the dead.

43 A lui rendono testimonianza tutti i profeti, che chiunque crede in lui riceve il perdono dei peccati mediante il suo nome».

To Him all the prophets testify (bear witness) that everyone who believes in Him receives forgiveness of sins through His name.

44 M entre Pietro stava ancora dicendo queste cose, lo Spirito Santo scese su tutti coloro che udivano la parola.

While Peter was still speaking these words, the Holy Spirit fell on all who were listening to the message.

45 E tutti i credenti circoncisi, che erano venuti con Pietro, rimasero meravigliati che il dono dello Spirito Santo fosse stato sparso anche sui gentili,

And the believers from among the circumcised who came with Peter were surprised and amazed, because the free gift of the Holy Spirit had been bestowed and poured out largely even on the Gentiles.

46 p erché li udivano parlare in altre lingue e magnificare Dio. Allora Pietro prese a dire:

For they heard them talking in tongues (languages) and extolling and magnifying God. Then Peter asked,

47 « Può alcuno vietare l'acqua, perché siano battezzati costoro che hanno ricevuto lo Spirito Santo proprio come noi?».

Can anyone forbid or refuse water for baptizing these people, seeing that they have received the Holy Spirit just as we have?

48 C osí egli comandò che fossero battezzati nel nome del Signore Gesú. Essi poi lo pregarono di rimanere con loro alcuni giorni.

And he ordered that they be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ (the Messiah). Then they begged him to stay on there for some days.
