The words of Lemuel king of Massa, which his mother taught him:

2 C he ti dirò, figlio mio? Che ti dirò, figlio del mio grembo? Che ti dirò, figlio dei miei voti?

What, my son? What, son of my womb? What, son of my vows and dedication to God?

3 N on dare il tuo vigore alle donne né la tua vita a ciò che distrugge i re.

Give not your strength to women, nor your ways to those who and that which ruin and destroy kings.

4 N on si addice ai re, o Lemuel, non si addice ai re bere vino né ai principi desiderare bevande inebrianti,

It is not for kings, O Lemuel, it is not for kings to drink wine, or for rulers to desire strong drink,

5 p erché bevendo non dimentichino la legge e non distorcano il diritto di tutti gli afflitti.

Lest they drink and forget the law and what it decrees, and pervert the justice due any of the afflicted.

6 D ate bevande inebrianti a chi sta per perire, e del vino a chi ha il cuore amareggiato.

Give strong drink to him who is ready to pass away, and wine to him in bitter distress of heart.

7 B eva per dimenticare la sua povertà e non ricordarsi piú dei suoi guai.

Let him drink and forget his poverty and remember his want and misery no more.

8 A pri la tua bocca in favore del muto in difesa di tutti i derelitti.

Open your mouth for the dumb, for the rights of all who are left desolate and defenseless;

9 A pri la tua bocca, giudica con giustizia e difendi la causa del misero e del bisognoso.

Open your mouth, judge righteously, and administer justice for the poor and needy.

10 C hi troverà una donna forte e virtuosa? Il suo valore è di gran lunga superiore alle perle.

A capable, intelligent, and virtuous woman—who is he who can find her? She is far more precious than jewels and her value is far above rubies or pearls.

11 I l cuore di suo marito confida in lei e avrà sempre dei guadagni.

The heart of her husband trusts in her confidently and relies on and believes in her securely, so that he has no lack of gain or need of spoil.

12 E lla gli fa del bene e non del male, tutti i giorni della sua vita.

She comforts, encourages, and does him only good as long as there is life within her.

13 S i procura lana e lino e lavora con piacere con le proprie mani.

She seeks out wool and flax and works with willing hands.

14 E lla è simile alle navi dei mercanti: fa venire il suo cibo da lontano.

She is like the merchant ships loaded with foodstuffs; she brings her household’s food from a far.

15 S i alza quando è ancora notte per distribuire il cibo alla sua famiglia e dare ordini alle sue domestiche.

She rises while it is yet night and gets food for her household and assigns her maids their tasks.

16 E lla guarda un campo e l'acquista; col frutto delle sue mani pianta una vigna.

She considers a field before she buys or accepts it; with her savings she plants fruitful vines in her vineyard.

17 S i cinge di forza i lombi, e irrobustisce le sue braccia.

She girds herself with strength and makes her arms strong and firm.

18 S i rende conto che il suo commercio va bene, e la sua lampada di notte non si spegne.

She tastes and sees that her gain from work is good; her lamp goes not out, but it burns on continually through the night.

19 S tende la sua mano alla conocchia e le sue palme impugnano il fuso.

She lays her hands to the spindle, and her hands hold the distaff.

20 T ende la sua mano al povero e porge le sue mani al bisognoso,

She opens her hand to the poor, yes, she reaches out her filled hands to the needy.

21 N on teme la neve per la sua famiglia, perché tutti quelli di casa hanno doppia veste.

She fears not the snow for her family, for all her household are doubly clothed in scarlet.

22 S i fa delle coperte di arazzo e le sue vesti sono di lino finissimo e di porpora.

She makes for herself coverlets, cushions, and rugs of tapestry. Her clothing is of linen, pure and fine, and of purple.

23 S uo marito è stimato alle porte, quando si siede fra gli anziani del paese.

Her husband is known in the gates, when he sits among the elders of the land.

24 C onfeziona vesti di lino e le vende, e rifornisce i mercanti di cinture.

She makes fine linen garments and leads others to buy them; she delivers to the merchants girdles.

25 F orza e onore sono il suo vestito e ride dei giorni a venire.

Strength and dignity are her clothing and her position is strong and secure; she rejoices over the future!

26 A pre la sua bocca con sapienza e sulla sua lingua c'è la legge della bontà.

She opens her mouth in skillful and godly Wisdom, and on her tongue is the law of kindness.

27 E lla sorveglia l'andamento della sua casa e non mangia il pane di pigrizia.

She looks well to how things go in her household, and the bread of idleness (gossip, discontent, and self-pity) she will not eat.

28 I suoi figli si levano e la proclamano beata; anche suo marito ne fa l'elogio, dicendo:

Her children rise up and call her blessed (happy, fortunate, and to be envied); and her husband boasts of and praises her,,

29 « Molte figlie hanno compiuto cose grandi, ma tu le sorpassi tutte quante».

Many daughters have done virtuously, nobly, and well, but you excel them all.

30 L a grazia è fallace e la bellezza è vana, ma la donna che teme l'Eterno, quella sarà lodata.

Charm and grace are deceptive, and beauty is vain, but a woman who reverently and worshipfully fears the Lord, she shall be praised!

31 D atele del frutto delle sue mani, e le sue stesse opere la lodino alle porte.

Give her of the fruit of her hands, and let her own works praise her in the gates!
