1 « Preghiera di Mosè, uomo di Dio.» O Signore, tu sei stato per noi un rifugio di generazione in generazione.

Lord, You have been our dwelling place and our refuge in all generations.

2 P rima che i monti fossero nati e che tu avessi formato la terra e il mondo, anzi da sempre e per sempre tu sei DIO.

Before the mountains were brought forth or ever You had formed and given birth to the earth and the world, even from everlasting to everlasting You are God.

3 T u fai ritornare l'uomo in polvere e dici: «Ritornate, o figli degli uomini».

You turn man back to dust and corruption, and say, Return, O sons of the earthborn!

4 P oiché mille anni ai tuoi occhi sono come il giorno di ieri quando è passato, o come una vigilia, nella notte.

For a thousand years in Your sight are but as yesterday when it is past, or as a watch in the night.

5 T u li porti via come un'inondazione. Essi sono come un sogno, sono come l'erba che verdeggia la mattina.

You carry away as with a flood; they are as a sleep. In the morning they are like grass which grows up—

6 L a mattina essa fiorisce e verdeggia, la sera è falciata e dissecca.

In the morning it flourishes and springs up; in the evening it is mown down and withers.

7 P oiché siamo consumati dalla tua ira e siamo atterriti dal tuo furore.

For we are consumed by Your anger, and by Your wrath are we troubled, overwhelmed, and frightened away.

8 T u metti le nostre colpe davanti a te, i nostri peccati occulti alla luce del tuo volto.

Our iniquities, our secret heart and its sins, You have set in the light of Your countenance.

9 P oiché tutti i nostri giorni svaniscono nella tua ira; finiamo i nostri anni come un sospiro.

For all our days pass away in Your wrath; we spend our years as a tale that is told.

10 I giorni dei nostri anni arrivano a settant'anni e per i piú forti a ottanta ma quel che costituisce il loro orgoglio non è che travaglio e vanità, perché passa in fretta e noi ce ne voliamo via.

The days of our years are threescore years and ten (seventy years)—or even, if by reason of strength, fourscore years (eighty years); yet is their pride only labor and sorrow, for it is soon gone, and we fly away.

11 C hi conosce la forza della tua ira e il tuo furore secondo il timore che ti è dovuto?

Who knows the power of Your anger? And Your wrath, who connects it with the reverent and worshipful fear that is due You?

12 I nsegnaci dunque a contare i nostri giorni, per ottenere un cuore savio.

So teach us to number our days, that we may get us a heart of wisdom.

13 R itorna, o Eterno! Fino a quando? E abbi pietà dei tuoi servi.

Turn, O Lord! How long—? Revoke Your sentence and be compassionate and at ease toward Your servants.

14 S aziaci al mattino con la tua benignità, e noi esulteremo e ci rallegreremo tutti i nostri giorni.

O satisfy us with Your mercy and loving-kindness in the morning, that we may rejoice and be glad all our days.

15 R allegraci in proporzione ai giorni che ci hai afflitti e in compenso degli anni che abbiamo sofferto calamità.

Make us glad in proportion to the days in which You have afflicted us and to the years in which we have suffered evil.

16 S ia manifesta la tua opera ai tuoi servi e la tua gloria ai loro figli.

Let Your work be revealed to Your servants, and Your majesty to their children.

17 L a grazia del Signore DIO nostro sia su di noi, e rendi stabile per noi l'opera delle nostre mani; sí, rendi stabile l'opera delle nostre mani.

And let the beauty and delightfulness and favor of the Lord our God be upon us; confirm and establish the work of our hands—yes, the work of our hands, confirm and establish it.
