1 A llora Isacco chiamò Giacobbe, lo benedisse, gli diede quest'ordine e gli disse: Non prender moglie tra le donne di Canaan.

So Isaac called Jacob and blessed him and commanded him, You shall not marry one of the women of Canaan.

2 A lzati, va' in Paddan-Aram, alla casa di Bethuel, padre di tua madre, e prenditi di là in moglie una delle figlie di Labano, fratello di tua madre.

Arise, go to Padan-aram, to the house of Bethuel your mother’s father, and take from there as a wife one of the daughters of Laban your mother’s brother.

3 D io onnipotente ti benedica, ti renda fruttifero e ti moltiplichi, si che tu divenga un'assemblea di popoli,

May God Almighty bless you and make you fruitful and multiply you until you become a group of peoples.

4 e ti dia la benedizione di Abrahamo, a te e alla tua discendenza con te, affinché tu possegga il paese dove vivi come uno straniero e che DIO donò ad Abrahamo».

May He give the blessing Abraham to you and your descendants with you, that you may inherit the land He gave to Abraham, in which you are a sojourner.

5 C osì Isacco fece partire Giacobbe, che andò in Paddan-Aram da Labano, figlio di Betbuel, l'Arameo fratello di Rebecca, madre di Giacobbe e di Esaú.

Thus Isaac sent Jacob away. He went to Padan-aram, to Laban son of Bethuel the Aramean, the brother of Rebekah, Jacob and Esau’s mother.

6 O r Esaú vide che Isacco aveva benedetto Giacobbe e lo aveva mandato in Paddan-Aram per prendersi di là una moglie e, nel benedirlo, gli aveva dato quest'ordine dicendo: «Non prender moglie tra le figlie di Canaan»;

Now Esau saw that Isaac had blessed Jacob and sent him to Padan-aram to take him a wife from there, and that as he blessed him, he gave him a charge, saying, You shall not take a wife of the daughters of Canaan;

7 e Giacobbe aveva ubbidito a suo padre e a sua madre e se ne era andato in Paddan-Aram.

And that Jacob obeyed his father and his mother and had gone to Padan-aram.

8 Q uando Esaú si rese conto che le figlie di Canaan erano mal viste da Isacco suo padre,

Also Esau saw that the daughters of Canaan did not please Isaac his father.

9 a ndò da Ismaele e prese Mahalath, figlia di Ismaele, figlio di Abrahamo, sorella di Nebajoth, perché fosse sua moglie oltre le mogli che già aveva.

So Esau went to Ishmael and took to be his wife, to the wives he had, Mahalath daughter of Ishmael, Abraham’s son, the sister of Nebaioth.

10 O r Giacobbe partì da Beer-Sceba e se ne andò verso Haran.

And Jacob left Beersheba and went toward Haran.

11 G iunse in un certo luogo e vi passó la notte, perché il sole era già tramontato. Allora prese una delle pietre del luogo, la pose sotto la sua testa e in quel luogo si coricò.

And he came to a certain place and stayed there overnight, because the sun was set. Taking one of the stones of the place, he put it under his head and lay down there to sleep.

12 E sognò di vedere una scala appoggiata sulla terra, la cui cima toccava il cielo; ed ecco, gli angeli di DIO salivano e scendevano su di essa.

And he dreamed that there was a ladder set up on the earth, and the top of it reached to heaven; and the angels of God were ascending and descending on it!

13 E d ecco l'Eterno stava in cima ad essa e gli disse: «Io sono l'Eterno, il DIO di Abrahamo tuo padre e il DIO di Isacco; la terra sulla quale tu sei coricato la darò a te e alla tua discendenza;

And behold, the Lord stood over and beside him and said, I am the Lord, the God of Abraham your father and the God of Isaac; I will give to you and to your descendants the land on which you are lying.

14 e la tua discendenza sarà come la polvere della terra, e tu ti estenderai a ovest e a est a nord e a sud; e tutte le famiglie della terra saranno benedette in te e nella tua discendenza.

And your offspring shall be as the dust or sand of the ground, and you shall spread abroad to the west and the east and the north and the south; and by you and your Offspring shall all the families of the earth be blessed and bless themselves.

15 E d ecco, io sono con te e ti proteggerò dovunque andrai, e ti ricondurrò in questo paese; poiché non ti abbandonerò prima di aver fatto quello che ti ho detto».

And behold, I am with you and will keep (watch over you with care, take notice of) you wherever you may go, and I will bring you back to this land; for I will not leave you until I have done all of which I have told you.

16 A llora Giacobbe si svegliò dal suo sonno e disse: «Certamente l'Eterno è in questo luogo, e io non lo sapevo».

And Jacob awoke from his sleep and he said, Surely the Lord is in this place and I did not know it.

17 E d ebbe paura e disse: «Come è tremendo questo luogo! Questa non è altro che la casa di DIO, e questa è la porta del cielo!».

He was afraid and said, How to be feared and reverenced is this place! This is none other than the house of God, and this is the gateway to heaven!

18 C osì Giacobbe si alzò al mattino presto prese la pietra che aveva posta sotto la sua testa, la eresse come stele e versò dell'olio sulla sua sommità.

And Jacob rose early in the morning and took the stone he had put under his head, and he set it up for a pillar (a monument to the vision in his dream), and he poured oil on its top.

19 E chiamò quel luogo Bethel, mentre prima il nome della città era Luz.

And he named that place Bethel; but the name of that city was Luz at first.

20 P oi Giacobbe fece un voto dicendo: «Se DIO sarà con me e mi proteggerà durante questo viaggio che faccio, se mi darà pane da mangiare e vesti da coprirmi,

Then Jacob made a vow, saying, If God will be with me and will keep me in this way that I go and will give me food to eat and clothing to wear,

21 e ritornerò alla casa di mio padre in pace, allora l'Eterno sarà il mio DIO;

So that I may come again to my father’s house in peace, then the Lord shall be my God;

22 e questa pietra che ho eretta come stele, sarà la casa di DIO; e di tutto quello che tu mi darai io ti darò la decima».

And this stone which I have set up as a pillar (monument) shall be God’s house, and of all that You give me I will give the tenth to You.
