1 T he proverbs (truths obscurely expressed, maxims, and parables) of Solomon son of David, king of Israel:

2 T hat people may know skillful and godly Wisdom and instruction, discern and comprehend the words of understanding and insight,

3 R eceive instruction in wise dealing and the discipline of wise thoughtfulness, righteousness, justice, and integrity,

a viver com disciplina e sensatez, fazendo o que é justo, direito e correto;

4 T hat prudence may be given to the simple, and knowledge, discretion, and discernment to the youth—

ajudarão a dar prudência aos inexperientes e conhecimento e bom senso aos jovens.

5 T he wise also will hear and increase in learning, and the person of understanding will acquire skill and attain to sound counsel —

Se o sábio lhes der ouvidos, aumentará seu conhecimento, e quem tem discernimento obterá orientação

6 T hat people may understand a proverb and a figure of speech or an enigma with its interpretation, and the words of the wise and their dark sayings or riddles.

para compreender provérbios e parábolas, ditados e enigmas dos sábios.

7 T he reverent and worshipful fear of the Lord is the beginning and the principal and choice part of knowledge; but fools despise skillful and godly Wisdom, instruction, and discipline.

O temor do Senhor é o princípio do conhecimento, mas os insensatos desprezam a sabedoria e a disciplina. Advertências da Sabedoria

8 M y son, hear the instruction of your father; reject not nor forsake the teaching of your mother.

Ouça, meu filho, a instrução de seu pai e não despreze o ensino de sua mãe.

9 F or they are a chaplet (garland) of grace upon your head and chains and pendants for your neck.

Eles serão um enfeite para a sua cabeça, um adorno para o seu pescoço.

10 M y son, if sinners entice you, do not consent.

Meu filho, se os maus tentarem seduzi-lo, não ceda!

11 I f they say, Come with us; let us lie in wait blood, let us ambush the innocent without cause;

Se disserem: “Venha conosco; fiquemos de tocaia para matar alguém, vamos divertir-nos armando emboscada contra quem de nada suspeita!

12 L et us swallow them up alive as does Sheol (the place of the dead), and whole, as those who go down into the pit;

Vamos engoli-los vivos, como a sepultura engole os mortos; vamos destruí-los inteiros, como são destruídos os que descem à cova;

13 W e shall find and take all kinds of precious goods, we shall fill our houses with plunder;

acharemos todo tipo de objetos valiosos e encheremos as nossas casas com o que roubarmos;

14 T hrow in your lot with us and be a sworn brother and comrade; let us all have one purse in common—

junte-se ao nosso bando; dividiremos em partes iguais tudo o que conseguirmos!”

15 M y son, do not walk in the way with them; restrain your foot from their path;

Meu filho, não vá pela vereda dessa gente! Afaste os pés do caminho que eles seguem,

16 F or their feet run to evil, and they make haste to shed blood.

pois os pés deles correm para fazer o mal, estão sempre prontos para derramar sangue.

17 F or in vain is the net spread in the sight of any bird!

Assim como é inútil estender a rede se as aves o observam,

18 B ut they are lying in wait for their own blood; they set an ambush for their own lives.

também esses homens não percebem que fazem tocaia contra a própria vida; armam emboscadas contra eles mesmos!

19 S o are the ways of everyone who is greedy of gain; such takes away the lives of its possessors.

Tal é o caminho de todos os gananciosos; quem assim procede a si mesmo se destrói. Convite à Sabedoria

20 W isdom cries aloud in the street, she raises her voice in the markets;

A sabedoria clama em alta voz nas ruas, ergue a voz nas praças públicas;

21 S he cries at the head of the noisy intersections; at the entrance of the city gates she speaks:

nas esquinas das ruas barulhentas ela clama, nas portas da cidade faz o seu discurso:

22 H ow long, O simple ones, will you love being simple? And the scoffers delight in scoffing and fools hate knowledge?

“Até quando vocês, inexperientes, irão contentar-se com a sua inexperiência? Vocês, zombadores, até quando terão prazer na zombaria? E vocês, tolos, até quando desprezarão o conhecimento?

23 I f you will turn (repent) and give heed to my reproof, behold, I '> Wisdom] will pour out my spirit upon you, I will make my words known to you.

Se acatarem a minha repreensão, eu lhes darei um espírito de sabedoria e lhes revelarei os meus pensamentos.

24 B ecause I have called and you have refused, have stretched out my hand and no man has heeded it,

Vocês, porém, rejeitaram o meu convite; ninguém se importou quando estendi minha mão!

25 A nd you treated as nothing all my counsel and would accept none of my reproof,

Visto que desprezaram totalmente o meu conselho e não quiseram aceitar a minha repreensão,

26 I also will laugh at your calamity; I will mock when the thing comes that shall cause you terror and panic—

eu, de minha parte, vou rir-me da sua desgraça; zombarei quando o que temem se abater sobre vocês,

27 W hen your panic comes as a storm and desolation and your calamity comes on as a whirlwind, when distress and anguish come upon you.

quando aquilo que temem abater-se sobre vocês como uma tempestade, quando a desgraça os atingir como um vendaval, quando a angústia e a dor os dominarem.

28 T hen will they call upon me but I will not answer; they will seek me early and diligently but they will not find me.

“Então vocês me chamarão, mas não responderei; procurarão por mim, mas não me encontrarão.

29 B ecause they hated knowledge and did not choose the reverent and worshipful fear of the Lord,

Visto que desprezaram o conhecimento e recusaram o temor do Senhor,

30 W ould accept none of my counsel, and despised all my reproof,

não quiseram aceitar o meu conselho e fizeram pouco caso da minha advertência,

31 T herefore shall they eat of the fruit of their own way and be satiated with their own devices.

comerão do fruto da sua conduta e se fartarão de suas próprias maquinações.

32 F or the backsliding of the simple shall slay them, and the careless ease of fools shall destroy them.

Pois a inconstância dos inexperientes os matará, e a falsa segurança dos tolos os destruirá;

33 B ut whoso hearkens to me shall dwell securely and in confident trust and shall be quiet, without fear or dread of evil.

mas quem me ouvir viverá em segurança e estará tranqüilo, sem temer nenhum mal”.
