1 A m I not an apostle (a special messenger)? Am I not free (unrestrained and exempt from any obligation)? Have I not seen Jesus our Lord? Are you not my workmanship in the Lord?

Não sou livre? Não sou apóstolo? Não vi Jesus, nosso Senhor? Não são vocês resultado do meu trabalho no Senhor?

2 E ven if I am not considered an apostle (a special messenger) by others, at least I am one to you; for you are the seal (the certificate, the living evidence) of my apostleship in the Lord.

Ainda que eu não seja apóstolo para outros, certamente o sou para vocês! Pois vocês são o selo do meu apostolado no Senhor.

3 T his is my defense (my vindication of myself) to those who would put me on trial and cross-examine me.

Esta é minha defesa diante daqueles que me julgam.

4 H ave we not the right to our food and drink ?

Não temos nós o direito de comer e beber?

5 H ave we not the right also to take along with us a Christian sister as wife, as do the other apostles and the Lord’s brothers and Cephas (Peter)?

Não temos nós o direito de levar conosco uma esposa crente como fazem os outros apóstolos, os irmãos do Senhor e Pedro?

6 O r is it only Barnabas and I who have no right to refrain from doing manual labor for a livelihood ?

Ou será que só eu e Barnabé temos direito de receber sustento sem trabalhar?

7 W hat soldier at any time serves at his own expense? Who plants a vineyard and does not eat any of the fruit of it? Who tends a flock and does not partake of the milk of the flock?

Quem serve como soldado à própria custa? Quem planta uma vinha e não come do seu fruto? Quem apascenta um rebanho e não bebe do seu leite?

8 D o I say this only on human authority and as a man reasons? Does not the Law endorse the same principle?

Não digo isso do ponto de vista meramente humano; a Lei não diz a mesma coisa?

9 F or in the Law of Moses it is written, You shall not muzzle an ox when it is treading out the corn. Is it for oxen that God cares?

Pois está escrito na Lei de Moisés: “Não amordace o boi enquanto ele estiver debulhando o cereal”. Por acaso é com bois que Deus está preocupado?

10 O r does He speak certainly and entirely for our sakes? it is written for our sakes, because the plowman ought to plow in hope, and the thresher ought to thresh in expectation of partaking of the harvest.

Não é certamente por nossa causa que ele o diz? Sim, isso foi escrito em nosso favor. Porque “o lavrador quando ara e o debulhador quando debulha, devem fazê-lo na esperança de participar da colheita”.

11 I f we have sown spiritual good among you, much if we reap from your material benefits?

Se entre vocês semeamos coisas espirituais, seria demais colhermos de vocês coisas materiais?

12 I f others share in this rightful claim upon you, do not we ? However, we have never exercised this right, but we endure everything rather than put a hindrance in the way of the good news (the Gospel) of Christ.

Se outros têm direito de ser sustentados por vocês, não o temos nós ainda mais? Mas nós nunca usamos desse direito. Ao contrário, suportamos tudo para não colocar obstáculo algum ao evangelho de Cristo.

13 D o you not know that those men who are employed in the services of the temple get their food from the temple? And that those who tend the altar share with the altar ?

Vocês não sabem que aqueles que trabalham no templo alimentam-se das coisas do templo, e que os que servem diante do altar participam do que é oferecido no altar?

14 t he Lord directed that those who publish the good news (the Gospel) should live (get their maintenance) by the Gospel.

Da mesma forma, o Senhor ordenou àqueles que pregam o evangelho, que vivam do evangelho.

15 B ut I have not made use of any of these privileges, nor am I writing this that any such provision be made for me. For it would be better for me to die than to have anyone make void and deprive me of my glorifying.

Mas eu não tenho usado de nenhum desses direitos. Não estou escrevendo na esperança de que vocês façam isso por mim. Prefiro morrer a permitir que alguém me prive deste meu orgulho.

16 F or if I preach the Gospel, that gives me no reason to boast, for I feel compelled of necessity to do it. Woe is me if I do not preach the glad tidings (the Gospel)!

Contudo, quando prego o evangelho, não posso me orgulhar, pois me é imposta a necessidade de pregar. Ai de mim se não pregar o evangelho!

17 F or if I do this work of my own free will, then I have my pay (my reward); but if it is not of my own will, but is done reluctantly and under compulsion, I am entrusted with a trusteeship and commission.

Porque, se prego de livre vontade, tenho recompensa; contudo, como prego por obrigação, estou simplesmente cumprindo uma incumbência a mim confiada.

18 W hat then is the reward that I get? Just this: that in my preaching the good news (the Gospel), I may offer it free of expense, not taking advantage of my rights and privileges of the Gospel.

Qual é, pois, a minha recompensa? Apenas esta: que, pregando o evangelho, eu o apresente gratuitamente, não usando, assim, dos meus direitos ao pregá-lo.

19 F or although I am free in every way from anyone’s control, I have made myself a bond servant to everyone, so that I might gain the more.

Porque, embora seja livre de todos, fiz-me escravo de todos, para ganhar o maior número possível de pessoas.

20 T o the Jews I became as a Jew, that I might win Jews; to men under the Law, as one under the Law, though not myself being under the Law, that I might win those under the Law.

Tornei-me judeu para os judeus, a fim de ganhar os judeus. Para os que estão debaixo da Lei, tornei-me como se estivesse sujeito à Lei (embora eu mesmo não esteja debaixo da Lei), a fim de ganhar os que estão debaixo da Lei.

21 T o those without (outside) law I became as one without law, not that I am without the law of God and lawless toward Him, but that I am within and committed to the law of Christ, that I might win those who are without law.

Para os que estão sem lei, tornei-me como sem lei (embora não esteja livre da lei de Deus, e sim sob a lei de Cristo), a fim de ganhar os que não têm a Lei.

22 T o the weak (wanting in discernment) I have become weak (wanting in discernment) that I might win the weak and overscrupulous. I have become all things to all men, that I might by all means (at all costs and in any and every way) save some.

Para com os fracos tornei-me fraco, para ganhar os fracos. Tornei-me tudo para com todos, para de alguma forma salvar alguns.

23 A nd I do this for the sake of the good news (the Gospel), in order that I may become a participator in it and share in its.

Faço tudo isso por causa do evangelho, para ser co-participante dele.

24 D o you not know that in a race all the runners compete, but one receives the prize? So run that you may lay hold and make it yours.

Vocês não sabem que de todos os que correm no estádio, apenas um ganha o prêmio? Corram de tal modo que alcancem o prêmio.

25 N ow every athlete who goes into training conducts himself temperately and restricts himself in all things. They do it to win a wreath that will soon wither, but we that cannot wither.

Todos os que competem nos jogos se submetem a um treinamento rigoroso, para obter uma coroa que logo perece; mas nós o fazemos para ganhar uma coroa que dura para sempre.

26 T herefore I do not run uncertainly (without definite aim). I do not box like one beating the air and striking without an adversary.

Sendo assim, não corro como quem corre sem alvo, e não luto como quem esmurra o ar.

27 B ut I buffet my body and subdue it, for fear that after proclaiming to others the Gospel and things pertaining to it, I myself should become unfit.

Mas esmurro o meu corpo e faço dele meu escravo, para que, depois de ter pregado aos outros, eu mesmo não venha a ser reprovado.
