1 N ow Abraham was old, well advanced in years, and the Lord had blessed Abraham in all things.

Abraão já era velho, de idade bem avançada, e o Senhor em tudo o abençoara.

2 A nd Abraham said to the eldest servant of his house, who ruled over all that he had, I beg of you, put your hand under my thigh;

Disse ele ao servo mais velho de sua casa, que era o responsável por tudo quanto tinha: “Ponha a mão debaixo da minha coxa

3 A nd you shall swear by the Lord, the God of heaven and earth, that you will not take a wife for my son from the daughters of the Canaanites, among whom I have settled,

e jure pelo Senhor, o Deus dos céus e o Deus da terra, que não buscará mulher para meu filho entre as filhas dos cananeus, no meio dos quais estou vivendo,

4 B ut you shall go to my country and to my relatives and take a wife for my son Isaac.

mas irá à minha terra e buscará entre os meus parentes uma mulher para meu filho Isaque”.

5 T he servant said to him, But perhaps the woman will not be willing to come along after me to this country. Must I take your son to the country from which you came?

O servo lhe perguntou: “E se a mulher não quiser vir comigo a esta terra? Devo então levar teu filho de volta à terra de onde vieste?”

6 A braham said to him, See to it that you do not take my son back there.

“Cuidado!”, disse Abraão, “Não deixe o meu filho voltar para lá.

7 T he Lord, the God of heaven, Who took me from my father’s house, from the land of my family and my birth, Who spoke to me and swore to me, saying, To your offspring I will give this land—He will send His Angel before you, and you will take a wife from there for my son.

“O Senhor, o Deus dos céus, que me tirou da casa de meu pai e de minha terra natal e que me prometeu sob juramento que à minha descendência daria esta terra, enviará o seu anjo adiante de você para que de lá traga uma mulher para meu filho.

8 A nd if the woman should not be willing to go along after you, then you will be clear from this oath; only you must not take my son back there.

Se a mulher não quiser vir, você estará livre do juramento. Mas não leve o meu filho de volta para lá.”

9 S o the servant put his hand under the thigh of Abraham his master and swore to him concerning this matter.

Então o servo pôs a mão debaixo da coxa de Abraão, seu senhor, e jurou cumprir aquela palavra.

10 A nd the servant took ten of his master’s camels and departed, taking some of all his master’s treasures with him; thus he journeyed to Mesopotamia, to the city of Nahor.

O servo partiu, com dez camelos do seu senhor, levando também do que o seu senhor tinha de melhor. Partiu para a Mesopotâmia, em direção à cidade onde Naor tinha morado.

11 A nd he made his camels to kneel down outside the city by a well of water at the time of the evening when women go out to draw water.

Ao cair da tarde, quando as mulheres costumam sair para buscar água, ele fez os camelos se ajoelharem junto ao poço que ficava fora da cidade.

12 A nd he said, O Lord, God of my master Abraham, I pray You, cause me to meet with good success today, and show kindness to my master Abraham.

Então orou: “ Senhor, Deus do meu senhor Abraão, dá-me neste dia bom êxito e seja bondoso com o meu senhor Abraão.

13 S ee, I stand here by the well of water, and the daughters of the men of the city are coming to draw water.

Como vês, estou aqui ao lado desta fonte, e as jovens do povo desta cidade estão vindo para tirar água.

14 A nd let it so be that the girl to whom I say, I pray you, let down your jar that I may drink, and she replies, Drink, and I will give your camels drink also—let her be the one whom You have selected and appointed and indicated for Your servant Isaac; and by it I shall know that You have shown kindness and faithfulness to my master.

Concede que a jovem a quem eu disser: Por favor, incline o seu cântaro e dê-me de beber, e ela me responder: ‘Bebe. Também darei água aos teus camelos’, seja essa a que escolheste para teu servo Isaque. Saberei assim que foste bondoso com o meu senhor”.

15 B efore he had finished speaking, behold, out came Rebekah, who was the daughter of Bethuel son of Milcah, who was the wife of Nahor the brother of Abraham, with her water jar on her shoulder.

Antes que ele terminasse de orar, surgiu Rebeca, filha de Betuel, filho de Milca, mulher de Naor, irmão de Abraão, trazendo no ombro o seu cântaro.

16 A nd the girl was very beautiful and attractive, chaste and modest, and unmarried. And she went down to the well, filled her water jar, and came up.

A jovem era muito bonita e virgem; nenhum homem tivera relações com ela. Rebeca desceu à fonte, encheu seu cântaro e voltou.

17 A nd the servant ran to meet her, and said, I pray you, let me drink a little water from your water jar.

O servo apressou-se ao encontro dela e disse: “Por favor, dê-me um pouco de água do seu cântaro”.

18 A nd she said, Drink, my lord; and she quickly let down her jar onto her hand and gave him a drink.

“Beba, meu senhor”, disse ela, e tirou rapidamente dos ombros o cântaro e o serviu.

19 W hen she had given him a drink, she said, I will draw water for your camels also, until they finish drinking.

Depois que lhe deu de beber, disse: “Tirarei água também para os seus camelos até saciá-los”.

20 S o she quickly emptied her jar into the trough and ran again to the well and drew water for all his camels.

Assim ela esvaziou depressa seu cântaro no bebedouro e correu de volta ao poço para tirar mais água para todos os camelos.

21 T he man stood gazing at her in silence, waiting to know if the Lord had made his trip prosperous.

Sem dizer nada, o homem a observava atentamente para saber se o Senhor tinha ou não coroado de êxito a sua missão.

22 A nd when the camels had finished drinking, the man took a gold earring or nose ring of half a shekel in weight, and for her hands two bracelets of ten shekels in weight in gold,

Quando os camelos acabaram de beber, o homem deu à jovem um pendente de ouro de seis gramas e duas pulseiras de ouro de cento e vinte gramas,

23 A nd said, Whose daughter are you? I pray you, tell me: Is there room in your father’s house for us to lodge there?

e perguntou: “De quem você é filha? Diga-me, por favor, se há lugar na casa de seu pai para eu e meus companheiros passarmos a noite”.

24 A nd she said to him, I am the daughter of Bethuel son of Milcah and Nahor.

“Sou filha de Betuel, o filho que Milca deu a Naor”, respondeu ela;

25 S he said also to him, We have both straw and provender (fodder) enough, and also room in which to lodge.

e acrescentou: “Temos bastante palha e forragem, e também temos lugar para vocês passarem a noite”.

26 T he man bowed down his head and worshiped the Lord

Então o homem curvou-se em adoração ao Senhor,

27 A nd said, Blessed be the Lord, the God of my master Abraham, Who has not left my master bereft and destitute of His loving-kindness and steadfastness. As for me, going on the way the Lord led me to the house of my master’s kinsmen.

dizendo: “Bendito seja o Senhor, o Deus do meu senhor Abraão, que não retirou sua bondade e sua fidelidade do meu senhor. Quanto a mim, o Senhor me conduziu na jornada até a casa dos parentes do meu senhor”.

28 T he girl related to her mother’s household what had happened.

A jovem correu para casa e contou tudo à família de sua mãe.

29 N ow Rebekah had a brother whose name was Laban, and Laban ran out to the man at the well.

Rebeca tinha um irmão chamado Labão. Ele saiu apressado à fonte para conhecer o homem,

30 F or when he saw the earring or nose ring, and the bracelets on his sister’s arms, and when he heard Rebekah his sister saying, The man said this to me, he went to the man and found him standing by the camels at the well.

pois tinha visto o pendente e as pulseiras no braço de sua irmã, e ouvira Rebeca contar o que o homem lhe dissera. Saiu, pois, e foi encontrá-lo parado junto à fonte, ao lado dos camelos.

31 H e cried, Come in, you blessed of the Lord! Why do you stand outside? For I have made the house ready and have prepared a place for the camels.

E disse: “Venha, bendito do Senhor! Por que ficar aí fora? Já arrumei a casa e um lugar para os camelos”.

32 S o the man came into the house; and ungirded his camels and gave straw and provender for the camels and water to bathe his feet and the feet of the men who were with him.

Assim o homem dirigiu-se à casa, e os camelos foram descarregados. Deram palha e forragem aos camelos, e água ao homem e aos que estavam com ele para lavarem os pés.

33 A meal was set before him, but he said, I will not eat until I have told of my errand. And said, Speak on.

Depois lhe trouxeram comida, mas ele disse: “Não comerei enquanto não disser o que tenho para dizer”. Disse Labão: “Então fale”.

34 A nd he said, I am Abraham’s servant.

E ele disse: “Sou servo de Abraão.

35 A nd the Lord has blessed my master mightily, and he has become great; and He has given him flocks, herds, silver, gold, menservants, maidservants, camels, and asses.

O Senhor o abençoou muito, e ele se tornou muito rico. Deu-lhe ovelhas e bois, prata e ouro, servos e servas, camelos e jumentos.

36 A nd Sarah my master’s wife bore a son to my master when she was old, and to him he has given all that he has.

Sara, mulher do meu senhor, na velhice lhe deu um filho, que é o herdeiro de tudo o que Abraão possui.

37 A nd my master made me swear, saying, You must not take a wife for my son from the daughters of the Canaanites, in whose land I dwell,

E meu senhor fez-me jurar, dizendo: ‘Você não buscará mulher para meu filho entre as filhas dos cananeus, em cuja terra estou vivendo,

38 B ut you shall go to my father’s house and to my family and take a wife for my son.

mas irá à família de meu pai, ao meu próprio clã, buscar uma mulher para meu filho’.

39 A nd I said to my master, But suppose the woman will not follow me.

“Então perguntei a meu senhor: E se a mulher não quiser me acompanhar?

40 A nd he said to me, The Lord, in Whose presence I walk, will send His Angel with you and prosper your way, and you will take a wife for my son from my kindred and from my father’s house.

“Ele respondeu: ‘O Senhor, a quem tenho servido, enviará seu anjo com você e coroará de êxito a sua missão, para que você traga para meu filho uma mulher do meu próprio clã, da família de meu pai.

41 T hen you shall be clear from my oath, when you come to my kindred; and if they do not give her to you, you shall be free and innocent of my oath.

Quando chegar aos meus parentes, você estará livre do juramento se eles se recusarem a entregá-la a você. Só então você estará livre do juramento’.

42 I came today to the well and said, O Lord, God of my master Abraham, if You are now causing me to go on my way prosperously—

“Hoje, quando cheguei à fonte, eu disse: Ó Senhor, Deus do meu senhor Abraão, se assim desejares, dá êxito à missão de que fui incumbido.

43 S ee, I am standing by the well of water; now let it be that when the maiden comes out to draw water and I say to her, I pray you, give me a little water from your jar to drink,

Aqui estou em pé diante desta fonte; se uma moça vier tirar água e eu lhe disser: Por favor, dê-me de beber um pouco de seu cântaro,

44 A nd if she says to me, You drink, and I will draw water for your camels also, let that same woman be the one whom the Lord has selected and indicated for my master’s son.

e ela me responder: ‘Bebe. Também darei água aos teus camelos’, seja essa a que o Senhor escolheu para o filho do meu senhor.

45 A nd before I had finished praying in my heart, behold, Rebekah came out with her jar on her shoulder, and she went down to the well and drew water. And I said to her, I pray you, let me have a drink.

“Antes de terminar de orar em meu coração, surgiu Rebeca, com o cântaro ao ombro. Dirigiu-se à fonte e tirou água, e eu lhe disse: Por favor, dê-me de beber.

46 A nd she quickly let down her jar from her shoulder and said, Drink, and I will water your camels also. So I drank, and she gave the camels drink also.

“Ela se apressou a tirar o cântaro do ombro e disse: ‘Bebe. Também darei água aos teus camelos’. Eu bebi, e ela deu de beber também aos camelos.

47 I asked her, Whose daughter are you? She said, The daughter of Bethuel, Nahor’s son, whom Milcah bore to him. And I put the earring or nose ring on her face and the bracelets on her arms.

“Depois lhe perguntei: De quem você é filha? “Ela me respondeu: ‘De Betuel, filho de Naor e Milca’. “Então coloquei o pendente em seu nariz e as pulseiras em seus braços,

48 A nd I bowed down my head and worshiped the Lord and blessed the Lord, the God of my master Abraham, Who had led me in the right way to take my master’s brother’s daughter to his son.

e curvei-me em adoração ao Senhor. Bendisse ao Senhor, o Deus do meu senhor Abraão, que me guiou pelo caminho certo para buscar para o filho dele a neta do irmão do meu senhor.

49 A nd now if you will deal kindly and truly with my master, tell me; and if not, tell me, that I may turn to the right or to the left.

Agora, se quiserem mostrar fidelidade e bondade a meu senhor, digam-me; e, se não quiserem, digam-me também, para que eu decida o que fazer”. O Casamento de Isaque e Rebeca

50 T hen Laban and Bethuel answered, The thing comes forth from the Lord; we cannot speak bad or good to you.

Labão e Betuel responderam: “Isso vem do Senhor; nada lhe podemos dizer, nem a favor, nem contra.

51 R ebekah is before you; take her and go, and let her be the wife of your master’s son, as the Lord has said.

Aqui está Rebeca; leve-a com você e que ela se torne a mulher do filho do seu senhor, como disse o Senhor ”.

52 A nd when Abraham’s servant heard their words, he bowed himself to the ground before the Lord.

Quando o servo de Abraão ouviu o que disseram, curvou-se até o chão diante do Senhor.

53 A nd the servant brought out jewels of silver, jewels of gold, and garments and gave them to Rebekah; he also gave precious things to her brother and her mother.

Então o servo deu jóias de ouro e de prata e vestidos a Rebeca; deu também presentes valiosos ao irmão dela e à sua mãe.

54 T hen they ate and drank, he and the men who were with him, and stayed there all night. And in the morning they arose, and he said. Send me away to my master.

Depois ele e os homens que o acompanhavam comeram, beberam e ali passaram a noite. Ao se levantarem na manhã seguinte, ele disse: “Deixem-me voltar ao meu senhor”.

55 B ut brother and mother said, Let the girl stay with us a few days—at least ten; then she may go.

Mas o irmão e a mãe dela responderam: “Deixe a jovem ficar mais uns dez dias conosco; então você poderá partir”.

56 B ut said to them, Do not hinder and delay me, seeing that the Lord has caused me to go prosperously on my way. Send me away, that I may go to my master.

Mas ele disse: “Não me detenham, agora que o Senhor coroou de êxito a minha missão. Vamos despedir-nos, e voltarei ao meu senhor”.

57 A nd they said, We will call the girl and ask her her desire.

Então lhe disseram: “Vamos chamar a jovem e ver o que ela diz”.

58 S o they called Rebekah and said to her, Will you go with this man? And she said, I will go.

Chamaram Rebeca e lhe perguntaram: “Você quer ir com este homem?” “Sim, quero”, respondeu ela.

59 S o they sent away Rebekah their sister and her nurse and Abraham’s servant and his men.

Despediram-se, pois, de sua irmã Rebeca, de sua ama, do servo de Abraão e dos que o acompanhavam.

60 A nd they blessed Rebekah and said to her, You are our sister; may you become the mother of thousands of ten thousands, and let your posterity possess the gate of their enemies.

E abençoaram Rebeca, dizendo-lhe: “Que você cresça, nossa irmã, até ser milhares de milhares; e que a sua descendência conquiste as cidades dos seus inimigos”.

61 A nd Rebekah and her maids arose and followed the man upon their camels. Thus the servant took Rebekah and went on his way.

Então Rebeca e suas servas se aprontaram, montaram seus camelos e partiram com o homem. E assim o servo partiu levando Rebeca.

62 N ow Isaac had returned from going to the well Beer-lahai-roi, for he dwelt in the South country (the Negeb).

Isaque tinha voltado de Beer-Laai-Roi, pois habitava no Neguebe.

63 A nd Isaac went out to meditate and bow down in the open country in the evening; and he looked up and saw that, behold, the camels were coming.

Certa tarde, saiu ao campo para meditar. Ao erguer os olhos, viu que se aproximavam camelos.

64 A nd Rebekah looked up, and when she saw Isaac, she dismounted from the camel.

Rebeca também ergueu os olhos e viu Isaque. Ela desceu do camelo

65 F or she said to the servant, Who is that man walking across the field to meet us? And the servant said, He is my master. So she took a veil and concealed herself with it.

e perguntou ao servo: “Quem é aquele homem que vem pelo campo ao nosso encontro?” “É meu senhor”, respondeu o servo. Então ela se cobriu com o véu.

66 A nd the servant told Isaac everything that he had done.

Depois o servo contou a Isaque tudo o que havia feito.

67 A nd Isaac brought her into his mother Sarah’s tent, and he took Rebekah and she became his wife, and he loved her; thus Isaac was comforted after his mother’s death.

Isaque levou Rebeca para a tenda de sua mãe Sara; fez dela sua mulher, e a amou; assim Isaque foi consolado após a morte de sua mãe.
