1 A nd Zedekiah son of Josiah, whom Nebuchadrezzar king of Babylon made king in the land of Judah, reigned instead of Coniah son of Jehoiakim.

Zedequias, filho de Josias, rei de Judá, foi designado rei por Nabucodonosor, rei da Babilônia. Ele reinou em lugar de Joaquim, filho de Jeoaquim.

2 B ut neither he nor his servants nor the people of the land listened to and obeyed the words of the Lord which He spoke through the prophet Jeremiah.

Nem ele, nem seus conselheiros, nem o povo da terra deram atenção às palavras que o Senhor tinha falado por meio do profeta Jeremias.

3 Z edekiah the king sent Jehucal son of Shelemiah with Zephaniah son of Maaseiah, the priest, to the prophet Jeremiah, saying, Pray now to the Lord our God for us.

O rei Zedequias, porém, mandou Jucal, filho de Selemias, e o sacerdote Sofonias, filho de Maaséias, ao profeta Jeremias com esta mensagem: “Ore ao Senhor, ao nosso Deus, em nosso favor”.

4 N ow Jeremiah was coming in and going out among the people, for they had not put him in prison.

Naquela época Jeremias estava livre para circular entre o povo, pois ainda não tinha sido preso.

5 A nd Pharaoh’s army had come forth out of Egypt, and when the Chaldeans who were besieging Jerusalem heard the news about them, they withdrew from Jerusalem and departed.

Enquanto isso, o exército do faraó tinha saído do Egito. E quando os babilônios que cercavam Jerusalém ouviram isso, retiraram o cerco.

6 T hen came the word of the Lord to the prophet Jeremiah:

O Senhor dirigiu esta palavra ao profeta Jeremias:

7 T hus says the Lord, the God of Israel: Thus shall you say to the king of Judah, who sent you to Me to inquire of Me: Behold, Pharaoh’s army, which has come forth to help you, will return to Egypt, to their own land.

“Assim diz o Senhor, o Deus de Israel: Digam ao rei de Judá, que os mandou para consultar-me: O exército do faraó, que saiu do Egito para vir ajudá-los, retornará à sua própria terra, ao Egito.

8 A nd the Chaldeans shall come again and fight against this city, and they shall take it and burn it with fire.

Os babilônios voltarão e atacarão esta cidade; eles a conquistarão e a destruirão a fogo”.

9 T hus says the Lord: Do not deceive yourselves, saying, The Chaldeans will surely stay away from us—for they will not stay away.

Assim diz o Senhor: “Não se enganem a si mesmos, dizendo: ‘Os babilônios certamente vão embora’. Porque eles não vão.

10 F or though you should defeat the whole army of the Chaldeans who fight against you, and there remained only the wounded and men stricken through among them, every man confined to his tent, yet they would rise up and burn this city with fire.

Ainda que vocês derrotassem todo o exército babilônio que está atacando vocês, e só lhe restassem homens feridos em suas tendas, eles se levantariam e incendiariam esta cidade”.

11 A nd when the army of the Chaldeans had departed from Jerusalem for fear of Pharaoh’s approaching army,

Depois que o exército babilônio se retirou de Jerusalém por causa do exército do faraó,

12 J eremiah went forth out of Jerusalem to go into the land of Benjamin to receive his portion there among the people.

Jeremias saiu da cidade para ir ao território de Benjamim a fim de tomar posse da propriedade que tinha entre o povo daquele lugar.

13 A nd when he was at the Gate of Benjamin, a sentry was there, whose name was Irijah son of Shelemiah, the son of Hananiah; and he seized Jeremiah the prophet, saying, You are deserting to the Chaldeans.

Mas, quando chegou à porta de Benjamim, o capitão da guarda, cujo nome era Jerias, filho de Selemias, filho de Hananias, o prendeu e disse: “Você está desertando para o lado dos babilônios!”

14 T hen said Jeremiah, It is false! I am not deserting to the Chaldeans. But the sentry would not listen to him. So Irijah took Jeremiah and brought him to the princes.

“Isso não é verdade!”, disse Jeremias. “Não estou passando para o lado dos babilônios.” Mas Jerias não quis ouvi-lo; e, prendendo Jeremias, o levou aos líderes.

15 T herefore the princes were enraged with Jeremiah and beat him and put him in prison in the house of Jonathan the scribe—for they had made that the prison.

Eles ficaram furiosos com Jeremias, espancaram-no e o prenderam na casa do secretário Jônatas, que tinham transformado numa prisão.

16 W hen Jeremiah had come into the cells in the dungeon and had remained there many days,

Jeremias foi posto numa cela subterrânea da prisão, onde ficou por muito tempo.

17 Z edekiah the king sent and brought him out; and the king asked him secretly in his house, Is there any word from the Lord? And Jeremiah said, There is! And he said also, You shall be delivered into the hand of the king of Babylon.

Então o rei mandou buscá-lo, e Jeremias foi trazido ao palácio. E, secretamente, o rei lhe perguntou: “Há alguma palavra da parte do Senhor ?” “Há”, respondeu Jeremias, “você será entregue nas mãos do rei da Babilônia.”

18 M oreover, Jeremiah said to King Zedekiah, In what have I sinned against you or against your servants or against this people, that you have put me in prison?

Então Jeremias disse ao rei Zedequias: “Que crime cometi contra você ou contra os seus conselheiros ou contra este povo para que você me mandasse para a prisão?

19 W here now are your prophets who prophesied to you, saying, The king of Babylon shall not come against you or against this land?

Onde estão os seus profetas que lhes profetizaram: ‘O rei da Babilônia não atacará nem a vocês nem a esta terra’?

20 T herefore hear now, I pray you, O my lord the king. Let my supplication, I pray you, come before you and be acceptable, that you do not cause me to return to the house of Jonathan the scribe, lest I die there.

Mas, agora, ó rei, meu senhor, escute-me, por favor. Permita-me apresentar-lhe a minha súplica: Não me mande de volta à casa de Jônatas, o secretário, para que eu não morra ali”.

21 T hen Zedekiah the king commanded, and they committed Jeremiah to the court of the guard, and a round loaf of bread from the bakers’ street was given to him daily until all the bread in the city was gone. So Jeremiah remained in the court of the guard.

Então o rei Zedequias deu ordens para que Jeremias fosse colocado no pátio da guarda e que diariamente recebesse pão da rua dos padeiros, enquanto houvesse pão na cidade. Assim Jeremias permaneceu no pátio da guarda.
