1 A m I not an apostle (a special messenger)? Am I not free (unrestrained and exempt from any obligation)? Have I not seen Jesus our Lord? Are you not my workmanship in the Lord?

Ne suis-je pas libre? Ne suis-je pas apôtre? N'ai-je pas vu Jésus notre Seigneur? N'êtes-vous pas mon oeuvre dans le Seigneur?

2 E ven if I am not considered an apostle (a special messenger) by others, at least I am one to you; for you are the seal (the certificate, the living evidence) of my apostleship in the Lord.

Si pour d'autres je ne suis pas apôtre, je le suis au moins pour vous; car vous êtes le sceau de mon apostolat dans le Seigneur.

3 T his is my defense (my vindication of myself) to those who would put me on trial and cross-examine me.

C'est là ma défense contre ceux qui m'accusent.

4 H ave we not the right to our food and drink ?

N'avons-nous pas le droit de manger et de boire?

5 H ave we not the right also to take along with us a Christian sister as wife, as do the other apostles and the Lord’s brothers and Cephas (Peter)?

N'avons-nous pas le droit de mener avec nous une soeur qui soit notre femme, comme font les autres apôtres, et les frères du Seigneur, et Céphas?

6 O r is it only Barnabas and I who have no right to refrain from doing manual labor for a livelihood ?

Ou bien, est-ce que moi seul et Barnabas nous n'avons pas le droit de ne point travailler?

7 W hat soldier at any time serves at his own expense? Who plants a vineyard and does not eat any of the fruit of it? Who tends a flock and does not partake of the milk of the flock?

Qui jamais fait le service militaire à ses propres frais? Qui est-ce qui plante une vigne, et n'en mange pas le fruit? Qui est-ce qui fait paître un troupeau, et ne se nourrit pas du lait du troupeau?

8 D o I say this only on human authority and as a man reasons? Does not the Law endorse the same principle?

Ces choses que je dis, n'existent-elles que dans les usages des hommes? la loi ne les dit-elle pas aussi?

9 F or in the Law of Moses it is written, You shall not muzzle an ox when it is treading out the corn. Is it for oxen that God cares?

Car il est écrit dans la loi de Moïse: Tu n'emmuselleras point le boeuf quand il foule le grain. Dieu se met-il en peine des boeufs,

10 O r does He speak certainly and entirely for our sakes? it is written for our sakes, because the plowman ought to plow in hope, and the thresher ought to thresh in expectation of partaking of the harvest.

ou parle-t-il uniquement à cause de nous? Oui, c'est à cause de nous qu'il a été écrit que celui qui laboure doit labourer avec espérance, et celui qui foule le grain fouler avec l'espérance d'y avoir part.

11 I f we have sown spiritual good among you, much if we reap from your material benefits?

Si nous avons semé parmi vous les biens spirituels, est-ce une grosse affaire si nous moissonnons vos biens temporels.

12 I f others share in this rightful claim upon you, do not we ? However, we have never exercised this right, but we endure everything rather than put a hindrance in the way of the good news (the Gospel) of Christ.

Si d'autres jouissent de ce droit sur vous, n'est-ce pas plutôt à nous d'en jouir? Mais nous n'avons point usé de ce droit; au contraire, nous souffrons tout, afin de ne pas créer d'obstacle à l'Évangile de Christ.

13 D o you not know that those men who are employed in the services of the temple get their food from the temple? And that those who tend the altar share with the altar ?

Ne savez-vous pas que ceux qui remplissent les fonctions sacrées sont nourris par le temple, que ceux qui servent à l'autel ont part à l'autel?

14 t he Lord directed that those who publish the good news (the Gospel) should live (get their maintenance) by the Gospel.

De même aussi, le Seigneur a ordonné à ceux qui annoncent l'Évangile de vivre de l'Évangile.

15 B ut I have not made use of any of these privileges, nor am I writing this that any such provision be made for me. For it would be better for me to die than to have anyone make void and deprive me of my glorifying.

Pour moi, je n'ai usé d'aucun de ces droits, et ce n'est pas afin de les réclamer en ma faveur que j'écris ainsi; car j'aimerais mieux mourir que de me laisser enlever ce sujet de gloire.

16 F or if I preach the Gospel, that gives me no reason to boast, for I feel compelled of necessity to do it. Woe is me if I do not preach the glad tidings (the Gospel)!

Si j'annonce l'Évangile, ce n'est pas pour moi un sujet de gloire, car la nécessité m'en est imposée, et malheur à moi si je n'annonce pas l'Évangile!

17 F or if I do this work of my own free will, then I have my pay (my reward); but if it is not of my own will, but is done reluctantly and under compulsion, I am entrusted with a trusteeship and commission.

Si je le fais de bon coeur, j'en ai la récompense; mais si je le fais malgré moi, c'est une charge qui m'est confiée.

18 W hat then is the reward that I get? Just this: that in my preaching the good news (the Gospel), I may offer it free of expense, not taking advantage of my rights and privileges of the Gospel.

Quelle est donc ma récompense? C'est d'offrir gratuitement l'Évangile que j'annonce, sans user de mon droit de prédicateur de l'Évangile.

19 F or although I am free in every way from anyone’s control, I have made myself a bond servant to everyone, so that I might gain the more.

Car, bien que je sois libre à l'égard de tous, je me suis rendu le serviteur de tous, afin de gagner le plus grand nombre.

20 T o the Jews I became as a Jew, that I might win Jews; to men under the Law, as one under the Law, though not myself being under the Law, that I might win those under the Law.

Avec les Juifs, j'ai été comme Juif, afin de gagner les Juifs; avec ceux qui sont sous la loi, comme sous la loi (quoique je ne sois pas moi-même sous la loi), afin de gagner ceux qui sont sous la loi;

21 T o those without (outside) law I became as one without law, not that I am without the law of God and lawless toward Him, but that I am within and committed to the law of Christ, that I might win those who are without law.

avec ceux qui sont sans loi, comme sans loi (quoique je ne sois point sans la loi de Dieu, étant sous la loi de Christ), afin de gagner ceux qui sont sans loi.

22 T o the weak (wanting in discernment) I have become weak (wanting in discernment) that I might win the weak and overscrupulous. I have become all things to all men, that I might by all means (at all costs and in any and every way) save some.

J'ai été faible avec les faibles, afin de gagner les faibles. Je me suis fait tout à tous, afin d'en sauver de toute manière quelques-uns.

23 A nd I do this for the sake of the good news (the Gospel), in order that I may become a participator in it and share in its.

Je fais tout à cause de l'Évangile, afin d'y avoir part.

24 D o you not know that in a race all the runners compete, but one receives the prize? So run that you may lay hold and make it yours.

Ne savez-vous pas que ceux qui courent dans le stade courent tous, mais qu'un seul remporte le prix? Courez de manière à le remporter.

25 N ow every athlete who goes into training conducts himself temperately and restricts himself in all things. They do it to win a wreath that will soon wither, but we that cannot wither.

Tous ceux qui combattent s'imposent toute espèce d'abstinences, et ils le font pour obtenir une couronne corruptible; mais nous, faisons-le pour une couronne incorruptible.

26 T herefore I do not run uncertainly (without definite aim). I do not box like one beating the air and striking without an adversary.

Moi donc, je cours, non pas comme à l'aventure; je frappe, non pas comme battant l'air.

27 B ut I buffet my body and subdue it, for fear that after proclaiming to others the Gospel and things pertaining to it, I myself should become unfit.

Mais je traite durement mon corps et je le tiens assujetti, de peur d'être moi-même rejeté, après avoir prêché aux autres.
