1 M y son, if you have become security for your neighbor, if you have given your pledge for a stranger or another,

2 Y ou are snared with the words of your lips, you are caught by the speech of your mouth.

Si tu es enlacé par les paroles de ta bouche, Si tu es pris par les paroles de ta bouche,

3 D o this now, my son, and deliver yourself when you have put yourself into the power of your neighbor; go, bestir and humble yourself, and beg your neighbor.

Fais donc ceci, mon fils, dégage-toi, Puisque tu es tombé au pouvoir de ton prochain; Va, prosterne-toi, et fais des instances auprès de lui;

4 G ive not sleep to your eyes, nor slumber to your eyelids;

Ne donne ni sommeil à tes yeux, Ni assoupissement à tes paupières;

5 D eliver yourself, as a roe or gazelle from the hand of the hunter, and as a bird from the hand of the fowler.

Dégage-toi comme la gazelle de la main du chasseur, Comme l'oiseau de la main de l'oiseleur.

6 G o to the ant, you sluggard; consider her ways and be wise!—

Va vers la fourmi, paresseux; Considère ses voies, et deviens sage.

7 W hich, having no chief, overseer, or ruler,

Elle n'a ni chef, Ni inspecteur, ni maître;

8 P rovides her food in the summer and gathers her supplies in the harvest.

Elle prépare en été sa nourriture, Elle amasse pendant la moisson de quoi manger.

9 H ow long will you sleep, O sluggard? When will you arise out of your sleep?

Paresseux, jusqu'à quand seras-tu couché? Quand te lèveras-tu de ton sommeil?

10 Y et a little sleep, a little slumber, a little folding of the hands to lie down and sleep—

Un peu de sommeil, un peu d'assoupissement, Un peu croiser les mains pour dormir!...

11 S o will your poverty come like a robber or one who travels and your want like an armed man.

Et la pauvreté te surprendra, comme un rôdeur, Et la disette, comme un homme en armes.

12 A worthless person, a wicked man, is he who goes about with a perverse (contrary, wayward) mouth.

L'homme pervers, l'homme inique, Marche la fausseté dans la bouche;

13 H e winks with his eyes, he speaks by shuffling or tapping with his feet, he makes signs and teaches with his fingers.

Il cligne des yeux, parle du pied, Fait des signes avec les doigts;

14 W illful and contrary in his heart, he devises trouble, vexation, and evil continually; he lets loose discord and sows it.

La perversité est dans son coeur, Il médite le mal en tout temps, Il excite des querelles.

15 T herefore upon him shall the crushing weight of calamity come suddenly; suddenly shall he be broken, and that without remedy.

Aussi sa ruine arrivera-t-elle subitement; Il sera brisé tout d'un coup, et sans remède.

16 T hese six things the Lord hates, indeed, seven are an abomination to Him:

Il y a six choses que hait l'Éternel, Et même sept qu'il a en horreur;

17 A proud look, a lying tongue, and hands that shed innocent blood,

Les yeux hautains, la langue menteuse, Les mains qui répandent le sang innocent,

18 A heart that manufactures wicked thoughts and plans, feet that are swift in running to evil,

Le coeur qui médite des projets iniques, Les pieds qui se hâtent de courir au mal,

19 A false witness who breathes out lies, and he who sows discord among his brethren.

Le faux témoin qui dit des mensonges, Et celui qui excite des querelles entre frères.

20 M y son, keep your father’s commandment and forsake not the law of your mother.

Mon fils, garde les préceptes de ton père, Et ne rejette pas l'enseignement de ta mère.

21 B ind them continually upon your heart and tie them about your neck.

Lie-les constamment sur ton coeur, Attache-les à ton cou.

22 W hen you go, they shall lead you; when you sleep, they shall keep you; and when you waken, they shall talk with you.

Ils te dirigeront dans ta marche, Ils te garderont sur ta couche, Ils te parleront à ton réveil.

23 F or the commandment is a lamp, and the whole teaching is light, and reproofs of discipline are the way of life,

Car le précepte est une lampe, et l'enseignement une lumière, Et les avertissements de la correction sont le chemin de la vie:

24 T o keep you from the evil woman, from the flattery of the tongue of a loose woman.

Ils te préserveront de la femme corrompue, De la langue doucereuse de l'étrangère.

25 L ust not after her beauty in your heart, neither let her capture you with her eyelids.

Ne la convoite pas dans ton coeur pour sa beauté, Et ne te laisse pas séduire par ses paupières.

26 F or on account of a harlot a man is brought to a piece of bread, and the adulteress stalks and snares the precious life.

Car pour la femme prostituée on se réduit à un morceau de pain, Et la femme mariée tend un piège à la vie précieuse.

27 C an a man take fire in his bosom and his clothes not be burned?

Quelqu'un mettra-t-il du feu dans son sein, Sans que ses vêtements s'enflamment?

28 C an one go upon hot coals and his feet not be burned?

Quelqu'un marchera-t-il sur des charbons ardents, Sans que ses pieds soient brûlés?

29 S o he who cohabits with his neighbor’s wife; he who touches her shall not be innocent or go unpunished.

Il en est de même pour celui qui va vers la femme de son prochain: Quiconque la touche ne restera pas impuni.

30 M en do not despise a thief if he steals to satisfy himself when he is hungry;

On ne tient pas pour innocent le voleur qui dérobe Pour satisfaire son appétit, quand il a faim;

31 B ut if he is found out, he must restore seven times; he must give the whole substance of his house.

Si on le trouve, il fera une restitution au septuple, Il donnera tout ce qu'il a dans sa maison.

32 B ut whoever commits adultery with a woman lacks heart and understanding (moral principle and prudence); he who does it is destroying his own life.

Mais celui qui commet un adultère avec une femme est dépourvu de sens, Celui qui veut se perdre agit de la sorte;

33 W ounds and disgrace will he get, and his reproach will not be wiped away.

Il n'aura que plaie et ignominie, Et son opprobre ne s'effacera point.

34 F or jealousy makes man furious; therefore he will not spare in the day of vengeance.

Car la jalousie met un homme en fureur, Et il est sans pitié au jour de la vengeance;

35 H e will not consider any ransom; neither will he be satisfied, though you offer him many gifts and bribes.

Il n'a égard à aucune rançon, Et il est inflexible, quand même tu multiplierais les dons.
