1 T hus the Lord said to me: Go and buy yourself a linen girdle and put it on your loins, but do not put it in water.

Ainsi m'a parlé l'Éternel: Va, achète-toi une ceinture de lin, et mets-la sur tes reins; mais ne la trempe pas dans l'eau.

2 S o I bought a girdle or waistcloth, according to the word of the Lord, and put it on my loins.

J'achetai la ceinture, selon la parole de l'Éternel, et je la mis sur mes reins.

3 A nd the word of the Lord came to me the second time, saying,

La parole de l'Éternel me fut adressée une seconde fois, en ces mots:

4 T ake the girdle which you have bought, which is on your loins, and arise, go to the Euphrates, and hide it there in a cleft of the rock.

Prends la ceinture que tu as achetée, et qui est sur tes reins; lève-toi, va vers l'Euphrate, et là, cache-la dans la fente d'un rocher.

5 S o I went and hid it by the Euphrates, as the Lord commanded me.

J'allai, et je la cachai près de l'Euphrate, comme l'Éternel me l'avait ordonné.

6 A nd after many days the Lord said to me, Arise, go to the Euphrates, and take from there the girdle which I commanded you to hide there.

Plusieurs jours après, l'Éternel me dit: Lève-toi, va vers l'Euphrate, et là, prends la ceinture que je t'avais ordonné d'y cacher.

7 T hen I went to the Euphrates and dug and took the girdle or waistcloth from the place where I had hidden it. And behold, the girdle was decayed and spoiled; it was good for nothing.

J'allai vers l'Euphrate, je fouillai, et je pris la ceinture dans le lieu où je l'avais cachée; mais voici, la ceinture était gâtée, elle n'était plus bonne à rien.

8 T hen the word of the Lord came to me, saying,

La parole de l'Éternel me fut adressée, en ces mots:

9 T hus says the Lord: After this manner will I mar the pride of Judah and the great pride of Jerusalem.

Ainsi parle l'Éternel: C'est ainsi que je détruirai l'orgueil de Juda Et l'orgueil immense de Jérusalem.

10 T hese evil people, who refuse to hear My words, who walk in the stubbornness of their hearts and have gone after other gods to serve them and to worship them, shall even be like this girdle or waistcloth, which is profitable for nothing.

Ce méchant peuple, qui refuse d'écouter mes paroles, Qui suit les penchants de son coeur, Et qui va après d'autres dieux, Pour les servir et se prosterner devant eux, Qu'il devienne comme cette ceinture, Qui n'est plus bonne à rien!

11 F or as the girdle clings to the loins of a man, so I caused the whole house of Israel and the whole house of Judah to cling to Me, says the Lord, that they might be for Me a people, a name, a praise, and a glory; but they would not listen or obey.

Car comme on attache la ceinture aux reins d'un homme, Ainsi je m'étais attaché toute la maison d'Israël Et toute la maison de Juda, dit l'Éternel, Afin qu'elles fussent mon peuple, Mon nom, ma louange, et ma gloire. Mais ils ne m'ont point écouté.

12 T herefore you shall speak to them this word: Thus says the Lord, the God of Israel: Every bottle and jar should be filled with wine. will say to you, Do we not certainly know that every bottle and jar should be filled with wine?

Tu leur diras cette parole: Ainsi parle l'Éternel, le Dieu d'Israël: Tous les vases seront remplis de vin. Et ils te diront: Ne savons-nous pas Que tous les vases seront remplis de vin?

13 T hen say to them, Thus says the Lord: Behold, I will fill with drunkenness all the inhabitants of this land, even the kings who sit upon David’s throne, the priests, the prophets, and all the inhabitants of Jerusalem.

Alors dis-leur: Ainsi parle l'Éternel: Voici, je remplirai tous les habitants de ce pays, Les rois qui sont assis sur le trône de David, Les sacrificateurs, les prophètes, et tous les habitants de Jérusalem, Je les remplirai d'ivresse.

14 A nd I will dash them one against another, even the fathers and the sons together, says the Lord. I will not pity or spare or have compassion, that I should not destroy them.

Je les briserai les uns contre les autres, Les pères et les fils ensemble, dit l'Éternel; Je n'épargnerai pas, je n'aurai point de pitié, point de miséricorde, Rien ne m'empêchera de les détruire.

15 H ear and give ear, do not be proud, for the Lord has spoken.

Écoutez et prêtez l'oreille! Ne soyez point orgueilleux! Car l'Éternel parle.

16 G ive glory to the Lord your God before He brings darkness and before your feet stumble upon the dark and twilit mountains, and, while you are looking for light, He turns it into the shadow of death and makes it thick darkness.

Rendez gloire à l'Éternel, votre Dieu, Avant qu'il fasse venir les ténèbres, Avant que vos pieds heurtent contre les montagnes de la nuit; Vous attendrez la lumière, Et il la changera en ombre de la mort, Il la réduira en obscurité profonde.

17 B ut if you will not hear and obey, I will weep in secret for your pride; my eyes will weep bitterly and run down with tears, because the Lord’s flock has been taken captive.

Si vous n'écoutez pas, Je pleurerai en secret, à cause de votre orgueil; Mes yeux fondront en larmes, Parce que le troupeau de l'Éternel sera emmené captif.

18 S ay to the king and the queen mother, Humble yourselves and take a lowly seat, for down from your head has come your beautiful crown (the crown of your glory).

Dis au roi et à la reine: Asseyez-vous à terre! Car il est tombé de vos têtes, Le diadème qui vous servait d'ornement.

19 T he cities of the South (the Negeb) have been shut up, and there is no one to open them; all Judah has been carried away captive, it has been wholly taken captive and into exile.

Les villes du midi sont fermées, Il n'y a personne pour ouvrir; Tout Juda est emmené captif, Il est emmené tout entier captif.

20 L ift up your eyes and behold those who come from the north. Where is the flock that was given to you, your beautiful flock?

Lève tes yeux et regarde Ceux qui viennent du septentrion. Où est le troupeau qui t'avait été donné, Le troupeau qui faisait ta gloire?

21 W hat will you say when He sets over you as head those whom you yourselves have taught to be lovers (allies) with you ? Will not pangs take hold of you like that of a woman in travail?

Que diras-tu de ce qu'il te châtie? C'est toi-même qui leur as appris à te traiter en maîtres. Les douleurs ne te saisiront-elles pas, Comme elles saisissent une femme en travail?

22 A nd if you say in your heart, Why have these things come upon me?—, Because of the greatness of your iniquity has your long robe been pulled aside and have you suffered violence.

Si tu dis en ton coeur: Pourquoi cela m'arrive-t-il? C'est à cause de la multitude de tes iniquités Que les pans de tes habits sont relevés, Et que tes talons sont violemment mis à nu.

23 C an the Ethiopian change his skin or the leopard his spots? Then also can you do good who are accustomed and taught to do evil.

Un Éthiopien peut-il changer sa peau, Et un léopard ses taches? De même, pourriez-vous faire le bien, Vous qui êtes accoutumés à faire le mal?

24 T herefore I will scatter you like chaff driven away by the wind from the desert.

Je les disperserai, comme la paille emportée Par le vent du désert.

25 T his is your lot, the portion measured to you from Me, says the Lord, because you have forgotten Me and trusted in falsehood.

Voilà ton sort, la part que je te mesure, Dit l'Éternel, Parce que tu m'as oublié, Et que tu as mis ta confiance dans le mensonge.

26 T herefore I Myself will, throwing your skirts up over your face, that your shame may be exposed.

Je relèverai tes pans jusque sur ton visage, Afin qu'on voie ta honte.

27 I have seen your detestable acts, even your adulteries and your lustful neighings, and the lewdness of your harlotry on the hills in the field. Woe to you, O Jerusalem! For how long a time yet will you not be made clean?

J'ai vu tes adultères et tes hennissements, Tes criminelles prostitutions sur les collines et dans les champs, J'ai vu tes abominations. Malheur à toi, Jérusalem! Jusques à quand tarderas-tu à te purifier?
