1 T he Lord said to Moses, Go to Pharaoh, for I have made his heart hard, and his servants’ hearts, that I might show these My signs before him,

L'Éternel dit à Moïse: Va vers Pharaon, car j'ai endurci son coeur et le coeur de ses serviteurs, pour faire éclater mes signes au milieu d'eux.

2 A nd that you may recount in the ears of your son and of your grandson what I have done in derision of the Egyptians and what things I have done there—My signs done among them—that you may recognize and know that I am the Lord.

C'est aussi pour que tu racontes à ton fils et au fils de ton fils comment j'ai traité les Égyptiens, et quels signes j'ai fait éclater au milieu d'eux. Et vous saurez que je suis l'Éternel.

3 S o Moses and Aaron went to Pharaoh, and said to him, Thus says the Lord, the God of the Hebrews, How long will you refuse to humble yourself before Me? Let My people go, that they may serve Me.

Moïse et Aaron allèrent vers Pharaon, et lui dirent: Ainsi parle l'Éternel, le Dieu des Hébreux: Jusqu'à quand refuseras-tu de t'humilier devant moi? Laisse aller mon peuple, afin qu'il me serve.

4 F or if you refuse to let My people go, behold, tomorrow I will bring locusts into your country.

Si tu refuses de laisser aller mon peuple, voici, je ferai venir demain des sauterelles dans toute l'étendue de ton pays.

5 A nd they shall cover the land so that one cannot see the ground; and they shall eat the remainder of what escaped and is left to you from the hail, and they shall eat every tree of yours that grows in the field;

Elles couvriront la surface de la terre, et l'on ne pourra plus voir la terre; elles dévoreront le reste de ce qui est échappé, ce que vous a laissé la grêle, elles dévoreront tous les arbres qui croissent dans vos champs;

6 T he locusts shall fill your houses and those of all your servants and of all the Egyptians, as neither your fathers nor your fathers’ fathers have seen from their birth until this day. Then Moses departed from Pharaoh.

elles rempliront tes maisons, les maisons de tous tes serviteurs et les maisons de tous les Égyptiens. Tes pères et les pères de tes pères n'auront rien vu de pareil depuis qu'ils existent sur la terre jusqu'à ce jour. Moïse se retira, et sortit de chez Pharaon.

7 A nd Pharaoh’s servants said to him, How long shall this man be a snare to us? Let the men go, that they may serve the Lord their God; do you not yet understand and know that Egypt is destroyed?

Les serviteurs de Pharaon lui dirent: Jusqu'à quand cet homme sera-t-il pour nous un piège? Laisse aller ces gens, et qu'ils servent l'Éternel, leur Dieu. Ne vois-tu pas encore que l'Égypte périt?

8 S o Moses and Aaron were brought again to Pharaoh; and he said to them, Go, serve the Lord your God; but just who are to go?

On fit revenir vers Pharaon Moïse et Aaron: Allez, leur dit-il, servez l'Éternel, votre Dieu. Qui sont ceux qui iront?

9 A nd Moses said, We will go with our young and our old, with our sons and our daughters, with our flocks and our herds, for we must hold a feast to the Lord.

Moïse répondit: Nous irons avec nos enfants et nos vieillards, avec nos fils et nos filles, avec nos brebis et nos boeufs; car c'est pour nous une fête en l'honneur de l'Éternel.

10 P haraoh said to them, Let the Lord be with you, if I ever let you go with your little ones! See, you have some evil purpose in mind.

Pharaon leur dit: Que l'Éternel soit avec vous, tout comme je vais vous laisser aller, vous et vos enfants! Prenez garde, car le malheur est devant vous!

11 N ot so! You that are men, go and serve the Lord, for that is what you want. And were driven from Pharaoh’s presence.

Non, non: allez, vous les hommes, et servez l'Éternel, car c'est là ce que vous avez demandé. Et on les chassa de la présence de Pharaon.

12 T hen the Lord said to Moses, Stretch out your hand over the land of Egypt for the locusts, that they may come up on the land of Egypt and eat all the vegetation of the land, all that the hail has left.

L'Éternel dit à Moïse: Étends ta main sur le pays d'Égypte, et que les sauterelles montent sur le pays d'Égypte; qu'elles dévorent toute l'herbe de la terre, tout ce que la grêle a laissé.

13 A nd Moses stretched forth his rod over the land of Egypt, and the Lord brought an east wind upon the land all that day and all that night; when it was morning, the east wind brought the locusts.

Moïse étendit sa verge sur le pays d'Égypte; et l'Éternel fit souffler un vent d'orient sur le pays toute cette journée et toute la nuit. Quand ce fut le matin, le vent d'orient avait apporté les sauterelles.

14 A nd the locusts came up over all the land of Egypt and settled down on the whole country of Egypt, a very dreadful mass of them; never before were there such locusts as these, nor will there ever be again.

Les sauterelles montèrent sur le pays d'Égypte, et se posèrent dans toute l'étendue de l'Égypte; elles étaient en si grande quantité qu'il n'y avait jamais eu et qu'il n'y aura jamais rien de semblable.

15 F or they covered the whole land, so that the ground was darkened, and they ate every bit of vegetation of the land and all the fruit of the trees which the hail had left; there remained not a green thing of the trees or the plants of the field in all the land of Egypt.

Elles couvrirent la surface de toute la terre, et la terre fut dans l'obscurité; elles dévorèrent toute l'herbe de la terre et tout le fruit des arbres, tout ce que la grêle avait laissé; et il ne resta aucune verdure aux arbres ni à l'herbe des champs, dans tout le pays d'Égypte.

16 T hen Pharaoh sent for Moses and Aaron in haste. He said, I have sinned against the Lord your God and you.

Aussitôt Pharaon appela Moïse et Aaron, et dit: J'ai péché contre l'Éternel, votre Dieu, et contre vous.

17 N ow therefore forgive my sin, I pray you, only this once, and entreat the Lord your God only that He may remove from me this death.

Mais pardonne mon péché pour cette fois seulement; et priez l'Éternel, votre Dieu, afin qu'il éloigne de moi encore cette plaie mortelle.

18 T hen Moses left Pharaoh and entreated the Lord.

Moïse sortit de chez Pharaon, et il pria l'Éternel.

19 A nd the Lord turned a violent west wind, which lifted the locusts and drove them into the Red Sea; not one locust remained in all the country of Egypt.

L'Éternel fit souffler un vent d'occident très fort, qui emporta les sauterelles, et les précipita dans la mer Rouge; il ne resta pas une seule sauterelle dans toute l'étendue de l'Égypte.

20 B ut the Lord made Pharaoh’s heart more strong and obstinate, and he would not let the Israelites go.

L'Éternel endurcit le coeur de Pharaon, et Pharaon ne laissa point aller les enfants d'Israël.

21 A nd the Lord said to Moses, Stretch out your hand toward the heavens, that there may be darkness over the land of Egypt, a darkness which may be felt.

L'Éternel dit à Moïse: Étends ta main vers le ciel, et qu'il y ait des ténèbres sur le pays d'Égypte, et que l'on puisse les toucher.

22 S o Moses stretched out his hand toward the sky, and for three days a thick darkness was all over the land of Egypt.

Moïse étendit sa main vers le ciel; et il y eut d'épaisses ténèbres dans tout le pays d'Égypte, pendant trois jours.

23 T he Egyptians could not see one another, nor did anyone rise from his place for three days; but all the Israelites had natural light in their dwellings.

On ne se voyait pas les uns les autres, et personne ne se leva de sa place pendant trois jours. Mais il y avait de la lumière dans les lieux où habitaient tous les enfants d'Israël.

24 A nd Pharaoh called to Moses, and said, Go, serve the Lord; let your little ones also go with you; it is only your flocks and your herds that must not go.

Pharaon appela Moïse, et dit: Allez, servez l'Éternel. Il n'y aura que vos brebis et vos boeufs qui resteront, et vos enfants pourront aller avec vous.

25 B ut Moses said, You must give into our hand also sacrifices and burnt offerings, that we may sacrifice to the Lord our God.

Moïse répondit: Tu mettras toi-même entre nos mains de quoi faire les sacrifices et les holocaustes que nous offrirons à l'Éternel, notre Dieu.

26 O ur livestock also shall go with us; there shall not a hoof be left behind; for of them must we take to serve the Lord our God, and we know not with what we must serve the Lord until we arrive there.

Nos troupeaux iront avec nous, et il ne restera pas un ongle; car c'est là que nous prendrons pour servir l'Éternel, notre Dieu; et jusqu'à ce que nous soyons arrivés, nous ne savons pas ce que nous choisirons pour offrir à l'Éternel.

27 B ut the Lord made Pharaoh’s heart stronger and more stubborn, and he would not let them go.

L'Éternel endurcit le coeur de Pharaon, et Pharaon ne voulut point les laisser aller.

28 A nd Pharaoh said to Moses, Get away from me! See that you never enter my presence again, for the day you see my face again you shall die!

Pharaon dit à Moïse: Sors de chez moi! Garde-toi de paraître encore en ma présence, car le jour où tu paraîtras en ma présence, tu mourras.

29 A nd Moses said, You have spoken truly; I will never see your face again.

Tu l'as dit! répliqua Moïse, je ne paraîtrai plus en ta présence.
