1 T he proverbs (truths obscurely expressed, maxims, and parables) of Solomon son of David, king of Israel:

Proverbes de Salomon, fils de David, roi d'Israël,

2 T hat people may know skillful and godly Wisdom and instruction, discern and comprehend the words of understanding and insight,

Pour connaître la sagesse et l'instruction, Pour comprendre les paroles de l'intelligence;

3 R eceive instruction in wise dealing and the discipline of wise thoughtfulness, righteousness, justice, and integrity,

Pour recevoir des leçons de bon sens, De justice, d'équité et de droiture;

4 T hat prudence may be given to the simple, and knowledge, discretion, and discernment to the youth—

Pour donner aux simples du discernement, Au jeune homme de la connaissance et de la réflexion.

5 T he wise also will hear and increase in learning, and the person of understanding will acquire skill and attain to sound counsel —

Que le sage écoute, et il augmentera son savoir, Et celui qui est intelligent acquerra de l'habileté,

6 T hat people may understand a proverb and a figure of speech or an enigma with its interpretation, and the words of the wise and their dark sayings or riddles.

Pour saisir le sens d'un proverbe ou d'une énigme, Des paroles des sages et de leurs sentences.

7 T he reverent and worshipful fear of the Lord is the beginning and the principal and choice part of knowledge; but fools despise skillful and godly Wisdom, instruction, and discipline.

La crainte de l'Éternel est le commencement de la science; Les insensés méprisent la sagesse et l'instruction.

8 M y son, hear the instruction of your father; reject not nor forsake the teaching of your mother.

Écoute, mon fils, l'instruction de ton père, Et ne rejette pas l'enseignement de ta mère;

9 F or they are a chaplet (garland) of grace upon your head and chains and pendants for your neck.

Car c'est une couronne de grâce pour ta tête, Et une parure pour ton cou.

10 M y son, if sinners entice you, do not consent.

Mon fils, si des pécheurs veulent te séduire, Ne te laisse pas gagner.

11 I f they say, Come with us; let us lie in wait blood, let us ambush the innocent without cause;

S'ils disent: Viens avec nous! dressons des embûches, versons du sang, Tendons des pièges à celui qui se repose en vain sur son innocence,

12 L et us swallow them up alive as does Sheol (the place of the dead), and whole, as those who go down into the pit;

Engloutissons-les tout vifs, comme le séjour des morts, Et tout entiers, comme ceux qui descendent dans la fosse;

13 W e shall find and take all kinds of precious goods, we shall fill our houses with plunder;

Nous trouverons toute sorte de biens précieux, Nous remplirons de butin nos maisons;

14 T hrow in your lot with us and be a sworn brother and comrade; let us all have one purse in common—

Tu auras ta part avec nous, Il n'y aura qu'une bourse pour nous tous!

15 M y son, do not walk in the way with them; restrain your foot from their path;

Mon fils, ne te mets pas en chemin avec eux, Détourne ton pied de leur sentier;

16 F or their feet run to evil, and they make haste to shed blood.

Car leurs pieds courent au mal, Et ils ont hâte de répandre le sang.

17 F or in vain is the net spread in the sight of any bird!

Mais en vain jette-t-on le filet Devant les yeux de tout ce qui a des ailes;

18 B ut they are lying in wait for their own blood; they set an ambush for their own lives.

Et eux, c'est contre leur propre sang qu'ils dressent des embûches, C'est à leur âme qu'ils tendent des pièges.

19 S o are the ways of everyone who is greedy of gain; such takes away the lives of its possessors.

Ainsi arrive-t-il à tout homme avide de gain; La cupidité cause la perte de ceux qui s'y livrent.

20 W isdom cries aloud in the street, she raises her voice in the markets;

La sagesse crie dans les rues, Elle élève sa voix dans les places:

21 S he cries at the head of the noisy intersections; at the entrance of the city gates she speaks:

Elle crie à l'entrée des lieux bruyants; Aux portes, dans la ville, elle fait entendre ses paroles:

22 H ow long, O simple ones, will you love being simple? And the scoffers delight in scoffing and fools hate knowledge?

Jusqu'à quand, stupides, aimerez-vous la stupidité? Jusqu'à quand les moqueurs se plairont-ils à la moquerie, Et les insensés haïront-ils la science?

23 I f you will turn (repent) and give heed to my reproof, behold, I '> Wisdom] will pour out my spirit upon you, I will make my words known to you.

Tournez-vous pour écouter mes réprimandes! Voici, je répandrai sur vous mon esprit, Je vous ferez connaître mes paroles...

24 B ecause I have called and you have refused, have stretched out my hand and no man has heeded it,

Puisque j'appelle et que vous résistez, Puisque j'étends ma main et que personne n'y prend garde,

25 A nd you treated as nothing all my counsel and would accept none of my reproof,

Puisque vous rejetez tous mes conseils, Et que vous n'aimez pas mes réprimandes,

26 I also will laugh at your calamity; I will mock when the thing comes that shall cause you terror and panic—

Moi aussi, je rirai quand vous serez dans le malheur, Je me moquerai quand la terreur vous saisira,

27 W hen your panic comes as a storm and desolation and your calamity comes on as a whirlwind, when distress and anguish come upon you.

Quand la terreur vous saisira comme une tempête, Et que le malheur vous enveloppera comme un tourbillon, Quand la détresse et l'angoisse fondront sur vous.

28 T hen will they call upon me but I will not answer; they will seek me early and diligently but they will not find me.

Alors ils m'appelleront, et je ne répondrai pas; Ils me chercheront, et ils ne me trouveront pas.

29 B ecause they hated knowledge and did not choose the reverent and worshipful fear of the Lord,

Parce qu'ils ont haï la science, Et qu'ils n'ont pas choisi la crainte de l'Éternel,

30 W ould accept none of my counsel, and despised all my reproof,

Parce qu'ils n'ont point aimé mes conseils, Et qu'ils ont dédaigné toutes mes réprimandes,

31 T herefore shall they eat of the fruit of their own way and be satiated with their own devices.

Ils se nourriront du fruit de leur voie, Et ils se rassasieront de leurs propres conseils,

32 F or the backsliding of the simple shall slay them, and the careless ease of fools shall destroy them.

Car la résistance des stupides les tue, Et la sécurité des insensés les perd;

33 B ut whoso hearkens to me shall dwell securely and in confident trust and shall be quiet, without fear or dread of evil.

Mais celui qui m'écoute reposera avec assurance, Il vivra tranquille et sans craindre aucun mal.
