1 Đ oạn, cả hội đồng đứng dậy, điệu Ngài đến trước mặt Phi-lát

Then the whole assembly of them got up and conducted before Pilate.

2 H ọ bèn khởi cáo Ngài rằng: Chúng tôi đã thấy người nầy xui dân ta làm loạn, cấm nộp thuế cho Sê-sa, và xưng là Đấng Christ, là Vua.

And they began to accuse Him, asserting, We found this Man perverting (misleading, corrupting, and turning away) our nation and forbidding to pay tribute to Caesar, saying that He Himself is Christ (the Messiah, the Anointed One), a King!

3 P hi-lát gạn Ngài rằng: Chính ngươi là Vua dân Giu-đa phải không? Đức Chúa Jêsus đáp rằng: Thật như lời.

So Pilate asked Him, Are You the King of the Jews? And He answered him, '> It is just as] you say.

4 P hi-lát bèn nói với các thầy tế lễ cả và dân chúng rằng: Ta không thấy người nầy có tội gì.

And Pilate said to the chief priests and the throngs, I find no guilt or crime in this Man.

5 N hưng họ cố nài rằng: Người nầy xui giục dân sự, truyền giáo khắp đất Giu-đê, bắt đầu từ xứ Ga-li-lê rồi đến đây.

But they were urgent and emphatic, saying, He stirs up and excites the people, teaching throughout all Judea—from Galilee, where He began, even to this place.

6 K hi Phi-lát nghe điều đó, thì hỏi nếu người nầy thật là dân Ga-li-lê chăng.

Upon hearing this, Pilate asked whether the Man was a Galilean.

7 B iết Ngài thuộc quyền cai trị của vua Hê-rốt, bèn giải đến cho vua Hê-rốt, vua ấy ở tại thành Giê-ru-sa-lem trong mấy ngày đó.

And when he found out that He belonged to Herod’s jurisdiction, he sent Him up to Herod, who was also in Jerusalem in those days.

8 V ua Hê-rốt thấy Đức Chúa Jêsus thì mừng lắm; vì lâu nay vua muốn gặp Ngài, nhơn đã nghe nói về chuyện Ngài, và mong xem Ngài làm phép lạ.

Now when Herod saw Jesus, he was exceedingly glad, for he had eagerly desired to see Him for a long time because of what he had heard concerning Him, and he was hoping to witness some sign (some striking evidence or spectacular performance) done by Him.

9 V ậy, vua hỏi Ngài nhiều câu, song Ngài không trả lời gì hết.

So he asked Him many questions, but He made no reply.

10 C ác thầy tế lễ cả và các thầy thông giáo ở đó, cáo Ngài dữ lắm.

Meanwhile, the chief priests and the scribes stood by, continuing vehemently and violently to accuse Him.

11 B ấy giờ vua Hê-rốt và quân lính hầu vua đều đãi Ngài cách khinh dể và nhạo báng Ngài; đoạn, họ mặc áo hoa hòe cho Ngài, rồi giao Ngài về cho Phi-lát.

And Herod, with his soldiers, treated Him with contempt and scoffed at and ridiculed Him; then, dressing Him up in bright and gorgeous apparel, he sent Him back to Pilate.

12 T rước kia Phi-lát với vua Hê-rốt thù hiềm nhau, nhưng nội ngày ấy trở nên bạn hữu.

And that very day Herod and Pilate became friends with each other— they had been at enmity before this.

13 P hi-lát hiệp các thầy tế lễ cả, các quan đề hình và dân chúng lại, mà nói rằng:

Pilate then called together the chief priests and the rulers and the people,

14 C ác ngươi đã đem nộp người nầy cho ta, về việc xui dân làm loạn; nhưng đã tra hỏi trước mặt các ngươi đây, thì ta không thấy người mắc một tội nào mà các ngươi đã cáo;

And said to them, You brought this Man before me as One Who was perverting and misleading and turning away and corrupting the people; and behold, after examining Him before you, I have not found any offense (crime or guilt) in this Man in regard to your accusations against Him;

15 v ua Hê-rốt cũng vậy, vì đã giao người về cho ta. Vậy, người nầy đã không làm điều gì đáng chết,

No, nor indeed did Herod, for he sent Him back to us; behold, He has done nothing deserving of death.

16 n ên ta sẽ đánh đòn rồi tha đi.

I will therefore chastise Him and deliver Him amended (reformed, taught His lesson) and release Him.

17 ( Số là đến ngày lễ, quan phải tha một tên tù cho dân.)

For it was necessary for him to release to them one prisoner at the Feast.

18 C húng bèn đồng thanh kêu lên rằng: Hãy giết người nầy đi, mà tha Ba-ra-ba cho chúng tôi!

But they all together raised a deep cry, saying, Away with this Man! Release to us Barabbas!

19 V ả, tên nầy bị tù vì dấy loạn trong thành, và vì tội giết người.

He was a man who had been thrown into prison for raising a riot in the city, and for murder.

20 P hi-lát có ý muốn tha Đức Chúa Jêsus, nên lại nói cùng dân chúng nữa.

Once more Pilate called to them, wishing to release Jesus;

21 S ong chúng kêu lên rằng: Đóng đinh nó trên cây thập tự đi! Đóng đinh nó trên cây thập tự đi!

But they kept shouting out, Crucify, crucify Him!

22 P hi-lát lại nói đến lần thứ ba, rằng: Vậy người nầy đã làm điều ác gì? Ta không tìm thấy người có sự gì đáng chết. Vậy, đánh đòn xong, ta sẽ tha.

A third time he said to them, Why? What wrong has He done? I have found in Him nothing deserving of death; I will therefore chastise Him '> in order to teach Him better] and release Him.

23 N hưng chúng cố nài, kêu lớn tiếng rằng phải đóng đinh Ngài trên cây thập tự; tiếng kêu của họ được thắng.

But they were insistent and urgent, demanding with loud cries that He should be crucified. And their voices prevailed (accomplished their purpose).

24 P hi-lát truyền làm y như lời chúng xin.

And Pilate gave sentence, that what they asked should be done.

25 B èn tha tên tù vì tội dấy loạn và giết người, là người chúng đã xin tha; rồi phó Đức Chúa Jêsus cho mặc ý họ.

So he released the man who had been thrown into prison for riot and murder, for whom they continued to ask, but Jesus he delivered up to be done with as they willed.

26 K hi chúng điệu Đức Chúa Jêsus đi, bắt một người xứ Sy-ren, tên là Si-môn, từ ngoài đồng về, buộc phải vác cây thập tự theo sau Ngài.

And as they led Him away, they seized one Simon of Cyrene, who was coming in from the country, and laid on him the cross and made him carry it behind Jesus.

27 C ó đoàn dân đông lắm đi theo Đức Chúa Jêsus, và có mấy người đờn bà đấm ngực khóc về Ngài.

And there accompanied a great multitude of the people, women who bewailed and lamented Him.

28 N hưng Đức Chúa Jêsus xây mặt lại với họ mà phán rằng: Hỡi con gái thành Giê-ru-sa-lem, đừng khóc về ta, song khóc về chính mình các ngươi và về con cái các ngươi.

But Jesus, turning toward them, said, Daughters of Jerusalem, do not weep for Me, but weep for yourselves and for your children.

29 V ì nầy, ngày hầu đến, người ta sẽ nói rằng: Phước cho đờn bà son, phước cho dạ không sanh đẻ và vú không cho con bú!

For behold, the days are coming during which they will say, Blessed (happy, fortunate, and to be envied) are the barren, and the wombs that have not borne, and the breasts that have never nursed!

30 B ấy giờ, người ta sẽ nói với núi rằng: Hãy đổ xuống trên chúng ta! với gò rằng: Hãy che chúng ta!

Then they will begin to say to the mountains, Fall on us! and to the hills, Cover (conceal, hide) us!

31 V ì nếu người ta làm những sự ấy cho cây xanh, thì cây khô sẽ ra sao?

For if they do these things when the timber is green, what will happen when it is dry?

32 C húng cũng đem hai người đi nữa, là kẻ trộm cướp, để giết cùng với Ngài.

Two others also, who were criminals, were led away to be executed with Him.

33 K hi đến một chỗ gọi là chỗ Sọ, họ đóng đinh Ngài trên cây thập tự tại đó, cùng hai tên trộm cướp, một tên bên hữu Ngài, một tên bên tả.

And when they came to the place which is called The Skull, there they crucified Him, and the criminals, one on the right and one on the left.

34 S ong Đức Chúa Jêsus cầu rằng: Lạy Cha, xin tha cho họ, vì họ không biết mình làm điều gì. Đoạn, họ bắt thăm chia nhau áo xống của Ngài.

And Jesus prayed, Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do. And they divided His garments and distributed them by casting lots for them.

35 D ân chúng đứng đó mà ngó. Các người coi việc nhạo cười Ngài, rằng: Nó đã cứu kẻ khác; nếu nó là Đấng Christ, Đấng Đức Chúa Trời đã lựa, thì hãy cứu mình đi!

Now the people stood by '> calmly and leisurely] watching; but the rulers scoffed and sneered ( turned up their noses) at Him, saying, He rescued others '> from death]; let Him now rescue Himself, if He is the Christ (the Messiah) of God, His Chosen One!

36 Q uân lính cũng dỡn cợt Ngài, lại gần đưa giấm cho Ngài uống,

The soldiers also ridiculed and made sport of Him, coming up and offering Him vinegar (a sour wine mixed with water)

37 m à rằng: Nếu ngươi là Vua dân Giu-đa, hãy tự cứu lấy mình đi!

And saying, If you are the King of the Jews, save (rescue) Yourself '> from death].

38 P hía trên đầu Ngài, có đề rằng: Người Nầy Là Vua Dân Giu-đa.

For there was also an inscription above Him in letters of Greek and Latin and Hebrew: This is the King of the Jews.

39 V ả, một tên trộm cướp bị đóng đinh cũng mắng nhiếc Ngài rằng: Người không phải là Đấng Christ sao? Hãy tự cứu lấy mình ngươi cùng chúng ta nữa!

One of the criminals who was suspended kept up a railing at Him, saying, Are You not the Christ (the Messiah)? Rescue Yourself and us '> from death]!

40 N hưng tên kia trách nó rằng: Ngươi cũng chịu một hình phạt ấy, còn chẳng sợ Đức Chúa Trời sao?

But the other one reproved him, saying, Do you not even fear God, seeing you yourself are under the same sentence of condemnation and suffering the same penalty?

41 V ề phần chúng ta, chỉ là sự công bình, vì hình ta chịu xứng với việc ta làm; nhưng ngươi nầy không hề làm một điều gì ác.

And we indeed suffer it justly, receiving the due reward of our actions; but this Man has done nothing out of the way '> strange or eccentric or perverse or unreasonable].

42 Đ oạn lại nói rằng: Hỡi Jêsus, khi Ngài đến trong nước mình rồi, xin nhớ lấy tôi!

Then he said to Jesus, Lord, remember me when You come in Your kingly glory!

43 Đ ức Chúa Jêsus đáp rằng: Quả thật, ta nói cùng ngươi, hôm nay ngươi sẽ được ở với ta trong nơi Ba-ra-đi.

And He answered him, Truly I tell you, today you shall be with Me in Paradise.

44 K hi đó, ước giờ thứ sáu, khắp xứ đều tối tăm cho đến giờ thứ chín.

It was now about the sixth hour (midday), and darkness enveloped the whole land and earth until the ninth hour (about three o’clock in the afternoon),

45 M ặt trời trở nên tối, và màn trong đền thờ xé chính giữa ra làm hai.

While the sun’s light faded or was darkened; and the curtain of the temple was torn in two.

46 Đ ức Chúa Jêsus bèn kêu lớn rằng: Hỡi Cha, tôi giao linh hồn lại trong tay Cha! Ngài vừa nói xong thì tắt hơi.

And Jesus, crying out with a loud voice, said, Father, into Your hands I commit My spirit! And with these words, He expired.

47 T hầy đội thấy sự đã xảy ra, ngợi khen Đức Chúa Trời rằng: Thật người nầy là người công bình.

Now the centurion, having seen what had taken place, recognized God and thanked and praised Him, and said, Indeed, without question, this Man was upright (just and innocent)!

48 C ả dân chúng đi xem, thấy nông nổi làm vậy, đấm ngực mà trở về.

And all the throngs that had gathered to see this spectacle, when they saw what had taken place, returned to their homes, beating their breasts.

49 S ong những kẻ quen biết Đức Chúa Jêsus và các người đờn bà theo Ngài từ xứ Ga-li-lê, đều đứng đằng xa mà ngó.

And all the acquaintances of and the women who had followed Him from Galilee stood at a distance and watched these things.

50 C ó một người, tên là Giô-sép, làm nghị viên tòa công luận, là người chánh trực công bình,

Now notice, there was a man named Joseph from the Jewish town of Arimathea. He was a member of the council (the Sanhedrin), and a good (upright, advantageous) man, and righteous (in right standing with God and man),

51 k hông đồng ý và cũng không dự việc các ngươi kia đã làm. Người ở A-ri-ma-thê, là thành thuộc về xứ Giu-đê, vẫn trông đợi nước Đức Chúa Trời.

Who had not agreed with or assented to the purpose and action of the others; and he was expecting and waiting for the kingdom of God.

52 N gười bèn đi đến Phi-lát mà xin xác Đức Chúa Jêsus.

This man went to Pilate and asked for the body of Jesus.

53 K hi đã đem xác Ngài xuống khỏi cây thập tự, người lấy vải liệm mà bọc, rồi chôn trong huyệt đã đục nơi hòn đá, là huyệt chưa chôn ai hết.

Then he took it down and rolled it up in a linen cloth for swathing dead bodies and laid Him in a rock-hewn tomb, where no one had ever yet been laid.

54 B ấy giờ là ngày sắm sửa, và ngày Sa-bát gần tới.

It was the day of Preparation, and the Sabbath was dawning (approaching).

55 C ác người đờn bà đã từ xứ Ga-li-lê đến với Đức Chúa Jêsus, theo Giô-sép, xem mả và cũng xem xác Ngài đặt thể nào. Khi trở về, họ sắm sửa những thuốc thơm và sáp thơm.

The women who had come with from Galilee followed closely and saw the tomb and how His body was laid.

56 N gày Sa-bát, họ nghỉ ngơi theo luật lệ.

Then they went back and made ready spices and ointments (perfumes). On the Sabbath day they rested in accordance with the commandment.
