1 A i tin Đức Chúa Jêsus là Đấng Christ, thì sanh bởi Đức Chúa Trời; và ai yêu Đức Chúa Trời là Đấng đã sanh ra, thì cũng yêu kẻ đã sanh ra bởi Ngài.

Everyone who believes (adheres to, trusts, and relies on the fact) that Jesus is the Christ (the Messiah) is a born-again child of God; and everyone who loves the Father also loves the one born of Him (His offspring).

2 C húng ta biết mình yêu con cái Đức Chúa Trời, khi chúng ta yêu Đức Chúa Trời và giữ vẹn các điều răn Ngài.

By this we come to know (recognize and understand) that we love the children of God: when we love God and obey His commands (orders, charges)—.

3 V ì nầy là sự yêu mến Đức Chúa Trời, tức là chúng ta vâng giữ điều răn Ngài. Điều răn của Ngài chẳng phải là nặng nề,

For the love of God is this: that we do His commands. And these orders of His are not irksome (burdensome, oppressive, or grievous).

4 v ì hễ sự gì sanh bởi Đức Chúa Trời, thì thắng hơn thế gian; và sự thắng hơn thế gian, ấy là đức tin của chúng ta.

For whatever is born of God is victorious over the world; and this is the victory that conquers the world, even our faith.

5 A i là người thắng hơn thế gian, há chẳng phải kẻ tin Đức Chúa Jêsus là Con Đức Chúa Trời hay sao?

Who is it that is victorious over the world but he who believes that Jesus is the Son of God ?

6 A áy chính Đức Chúa Jêsus Christ đã lấy nước và huyết mà đến, chẳng những lấy nước mà thôi, bèn là lấy nước và huyết;

This is He Who came by (with) water and blood '> His baptism and His death], Jesus Christ (the Messiah)—not by (in) the water only, but by (in) the water and the blood. And it is the Spirit Who bears witness, because the Spirit is the Truth.

7 ấ y là Đức Thánh Linh đã làm chứng, vì Đức Thánh Linh tức là lẽ thật.

So there are three witnesses in heaven: the Father, the Word and the Holy Spirit, and these three are One;

8 V ì có ba làm chứng: Đức Thánh Linh, nước và huyết; ba ấy hiệp một.

and there are three witnesses on the earth: the Spirit, the water, and the blood; and these three agree.

9 V í bằng chúng ta nhận chứng của loài người, thì chứng của Đức Thánh Linh trọng hơn; vả, chứng của Đức Chúa Trời ấy là chứng mà Ngài làm về Con Ngài.

If we accept the testimony of men, the testimony of God is greater (of stronger authority), for this is the testimony of God, even the witness which He has borne regarding His Son.

10 A i tin đến Con Đức Chúa Trời, thì có chứng ấy trong mình; còn ai không tin Đức Chúa Trời, thì cho Ngài là nói dối, vì chẳng tin đến chứng Đức Chúa Trời đã làm về Con Ngài.

He who believes in the Son of God has the testimony within himself. He who does not believe God has made Him out to be and represented Him as a liar, because he has not believed (put his faith in, adhered to, and relied on) the evidence (the testimony) that God has borne regarding His Son.

11 C hừng ấy tức là Đức Chúa Trời đã ban sự sống đời đời cho chúng ta, và sự sống ấy ở trong Con Ngài.

And this is that testimony (that evidence): God gave us eternal life, and this life is in His Son.

12 A i có Đức Chúa Con thì có sự sống; ai không có Con Đức Chúa Trời thì không có sự sống.

He who possesses the Son has that life; he who does not possess the Son of God does not have that life.

13 T a đã viết những điều nầy cho các con, hầu cho các con biết mình có sự sống đời đời, là kẻ nào tin đến danh Con Đức Chúa Trời.

I write this to you who believe in (adhere to, trust in, and rely on) the name of the Son of God '> the peculiar services and blessings conferred by Him on men], so that you may know that you have life, yes, eternal life.

14 N ầy là điều chúng ta dạn dĩ ở trước mặt Chúa, nếu chúng ta theo ý muốn Ngài mà cầu xin việc gì, thì Ngài nghe chúng ta.

And this is the confidence (the assurance, the privilege of boldness) which we have in Him: that if we ask anything (make any request) according to His will (in agreement with His own plan), He listens to and hears us.

15 N ếu chúng ta biết không cứ mình xin điều gì, Ngài cũng nghe chúng ta, thì chúng ta biết mình đã nhận lãnh điều mình xin Ngài.

And if (since) we know that He listens to us in whatever we ask, we also know that we have the requests made of Him.

16 V ì có kẻ thấy anh em mình phạm tội, mà tội không đến nỗi chết, thì hãy cầu xin, và Đức Chúa Trời sẽ ban sự sống cho, tức là ban cho những kẻ phạm tội mà chưa đến nỗi chết. Cũng có tội đến nỗi chết; ấy chẳng phải vì tội đó mà ta nói nên cầu xin.

If anyone sees his brother committing a sin that does not death (the extinguishing of life), he will pray and will give him life. There is a sin to death; I do not say that one should pray for that.

17 M ọi sự không công bình đều là tội; mà cũng có tội không đến nỗi chết.

All wrongdoing is sin, and there is sin which does not death.

18 C húng ta biết rằng ai sanh bởi Đức Chúa Trời, thì hẳn chẳng phạm tội; nhưng ai sanh bởi Đức Chúa Trời, thì tự giữ lấy mình, ma quỉ chẳng làm hại người được.

We know that anyone born of God does not practice committing sin, but the One Who was begotten of God carefully watches over and protects him, and the wicked one does not lay hold (get a grip) on him or touch.

19 C húng ta biết mình thuộc về Đức Chúa Trời, còn cả thế gian đều phục dưới quyền ma quỉ.

We know that we are of God, and the whole world is under the power of the evil one.

20 N hưng chúng ta biết Con Đức Chúa Trời đã đến, Ngài đã ban trí khôn cho chúng ta đặng chúng ta biết Đấng chân thật, và chúng ta ở trong Đấng chân thật, là ở trong Đức Chúa Jêsus Christ, Con của Ngài. Aáy chính Ngài là Đức Chúa Trời chân thật và là sự sống đời đời.

And we know that the Son of God has come to this world and has given us understanding and insight to perceive (recognize) and come to know better and more clearly Him Who is true; and we are in Him Who is true—in His Son Jesus Christ (the Messiah). This is the true God and Life eternal.

21 H ỡi các con cái bé mọn, hãy giữ mình về hình tượng!

Little children, keep yourselves from idols (false gods)—. Amen (so let it be).
