1 H ãy xem Đức Chúa Cha đã tỏ cho chúng ta sự yêu thương dường nào, mà cho chúng ta được xưng là con cái Đức Chúa Trời; và chúng ta thật là con cái Ngài. Aáy là vì đó mà thế gian chẳng biết chúng ta, vì họ chẳng từng biết Ngài.

See what '> an incredible] quality of love the Father has given (shown, bestowed on) us, that we should be named and called and counted the children of God! And so we are! The reason that the world does not know (recognize, acknowledge) us is that it does not know (recognize, acknowledge) Him.

2 H ỡi kẻ rất yêu dấu, chính lúc bây giờ chúng ta là con cái Đức Chúa Trời, còn về sự chúng ta sẽ ra thể nào, thì điều đó chưa được bày tỏ. Chúng ta biết rằng khi Ngài hiện đến, chúng ta sẽ giống như Ngài, vì sẽ thấy Ngài như vốn có thật vậy.

Beloved, we are now God’s children; it is not yet disclosed (made clear) what we shall be, but we know that when He comes and is manifested, we shall '> as God’s children] resemble and be like Him, for we shall see Him just as He is.

3 A i có sự trông cậy đó trong lòng, thì tự mình làm nên thanh sạch, cũng như Ngài là thanh sạch.

And everyone who has this hope on Him cleanses (purifies) himself just as He is pure (chaste, undefiled, guiltless).

4 C òn ai phạm tội tức là trái luật pháp; và sự tội lỗi tức là sự trái luật pháp.

Everyone who commits (practices) sin is guilty of lawlessness; for sin is, lawlessness (the breaking, violating of God’s law by transgression or neglect—being unrestrained and unregulated by His commands and His will).

5 V ả, các con biết Đức Chúa Jêsus Christ đã hiện ra để cất tội lỗi đi, và biết trong Ngài không có tội lỗi.

You know that He appeared in visible form and became Man to take away sins, and in Him there is no sin '> essentially and forever].

6 A i ở trong Ngài thì không phạm tội; còn ai phạm tội, thì chẳng từng thấy Ngài và chẳng từng biết Ngài.

No one who abides in Him '> in communion with and in obedience to Him—deliberately, knowingly, and habitually] commits (practices) sin. No one who sins has either seen or known Him.

7 H ỡi các con cái bé mọn, chớ để cho ai lừa dối mình: kẻ làm sự công bình là người công bình, như chính mình Chúa là công bình.

Boys (lads), let no one deceive and lead you astray. He who practices righteousness is righteous, even as He is righteous.

8 K ẻ nào phạm tội là thuộc về ma quỉ; vì ma quỉ phạm tội từ lúc ban đầu. Vả, Con Đức Chúa Trời đã hiện ra để hủy phá công việc của ma quỉ.

he who commits sin is of the devil, for the devil has sinned (violated the divine law) from the beginning. The reason the Son of God was made manifest (visible) was to undo (destroy, loosen, and dissolve) the works the devil.

9 A i sanh bởi Đức Chúa Trời, thì chẳng phạm tội, vì hột giống của Đức Chúa Trời ở trong người, và người không thể phạm tội được, vì đã sanh bởi Đức Chúa Trời.

No one born (begotten) of God '> habitually] practices sin, for God’s nature abides in him; and he cannot practice sinning because he is born (begotten) of God.

10 B ởi đó, người ta nhận biết con cái Đức Chúa Trời và con cái ma quỉ: ai chẳng làm điều công bình là không thuộc về Đức Chúa Trời, kẻ chẳng yêu anh em mình cũng vậy.

By this it is made clear who take their nature from God and are His children and who take their nature from the devil and are his children: no one who does not practice righteousness is of God; neither is anyone who does not love his brother (his fellow believer in Christ).

11 V ả, lời rao truyền mà các con đã nghe từ lúc ban đầu, ấy là chúng ta phải yêu thương lẫn nhau.

For this is the message (the announcement) which you have heard from the first, that we should love one another,

12 C hớ làm như Ca-in, là kẻ thuộc về ma quỉ, đã giết em mình. Vì sao người giết đi? Bởi việc làm của người là dữ, còn việc làm của em người là công bình.

not be like Cain who from the evil one and slew his brother. And why did he slay him? Because his deeds (activities, works) were wicked and malicious and his brother’s were righteous (virtuous).

13 H ỡi anh em, nếu thế gian ghen ghét anh em, thì chớ lấy làm lạ.

Do not be surprised and wonder, brethren, that the world detests and pursues you with hatred.

14 C húng ta biết rằng mình đã vượt khỏi sự chết qua sự sống, vì chúng ta yêu anh em mình. Còn ai chẳng yêu thì ở trong sự chết.

We know that we have passed over out of death into Life by the fact that we love the brethren (our fellow Christians). He who does not love abides (remains, is held and kept continually) in death.

15 A i ghét anh em mình, là kẻ giết người; anh em biết rằng chẳng một kẻ nào giết người có sự sống đời đời ở trong mình.

Anyone who hates (abominates, detests) his brother is a murderer, and you know that no murderer has eternal life abiding ( persevering) within him.

16 B ởi đó chúng ta nhận biết lòng yêu thương, ấy là Chúa đã vì chúng ta bỏ sự sống; chúng ta cũng nên bỏ sự sống vì anh em mình vậy.

By this we come to know (progressively to recognize, to perceive, to understand) the love: that He laid down His life for us; and we ought to lay lives down for brothers '> in Him].

17 N ếu ai có của cải đời nầy, thấy anh em mình đương cùng túng mà chặt dạ, thì lòng yêu mến Đức Chúa Trời thể nào ở trong người ấy được!

But if anyone has this world’s goods (resources for sustaining life) and sees his brother and fellow believer in need, yet closes his heart of compassion against him, how can the love of God live and remain in him?

18 H ỡi các con cái bé mọn, chớ yêu mến bằng lời nói và lưỡi, nhưng bằng việc làm và lẽ thật.

Little children, let us not love in theory or in speech but in deed and in truth (in practice and in sincerity).

19 B ởi đó, chúng ta biết mình là thuộc về lẽ thật, và giục lòng vững chắc ở trước mặt Ngài.

By this we shall come to know (perceive, recognize, and understand) that we are of the Truth, and can reassure (quiet, conciliate, and pacify) our hearts in His presence,

20 V ì nếu lòng mình cáo trách mình, thì Đức Chúa Trời lại lớn hơn lòng mình nữa, và biết cả mọi sự.

Whenever our hearts in '> tormenting] self-accusation make us feel guilty and condemn us. '> we are in God’s hands.] For He is above and greater than our consciences (our hearts), and He knows (perceives and understands) everything.

21 H ỡi kẻ rất yêu dấu, ví bằng lòng mình không cáo trách, thì chúng ta có lòng rất dạn dĩ, đặng đến gần Đức Chúa Trời:

And, beloved, if our consciences (our hearts) do not accuse us, we have confidence (complete assurance and boldness) before God,

22 v à chúng ta xin điều gì mặc dầu, thì nhận được đều ấy, bởi chúng ta vâng giữ các điều răn của Ngài và làm những điều đẹp ý Ngài.

And we receive from Him whatever we ask, because we '> watchfully] obey His orders and '> habitually] practice what is pleasing to Him.

23 V ả, nầy là điều răn của Ngài: là chúng ta phải tin đến danh Con Ngài, tức là Đức Chúa Jêsus Christ, và chúng ta phải yêu mến lẫn nhau như Ngài đã truyền dạy ta.

And this is His order (His command, His injunction): that we should believe in (put our faith and trust in and adhere to and rely on) the name of His Son Jesus Christ (the Messiah), and that we should love one another, just as He has commanded us.

24 A i vâng giữ các điều răn Ngài thì ở trong Đức Chúa Trời, và Đức Chúa Trời ở trong người ấy; chúng ta biết Ngài ở trong lòng chúng ta, là nhờ Đức Thánh Linh mà Ngài đã ban cho chúng ta.

All who keep His commandments abide in Him, and He in them. '> They let Christ be a home to them and they are the home of Christ.] And by this we know and understand and have the proof that He lives and makes His home in us: by the Spirit Whom He has given us.
