1 V ậy, chính tôi đã quyết định không trở lại cùng anh em để làm cho anh em buồn rầu;

But I definitely made up my mind not to grieve you with another painful and distressing visit.

2 v ì nếu tôi làm cho anh em buồn rầu, thì thể nào tôi được trông cậy sự vui bởi kẻ mà chính tôi đã làm cho buồn rầu?

For if I cause you pain, who is there to provide me enjoyment but the one whom I have grieved and made sad?

3 T ôi đã biết cho anh em như thế, hầu cho khi tôi đến nơi, sẽ không buồn bởi kẻ đáng làm tôi vui: tôi tin cậy ở hết thảy anh em rằng, anh em ai nấy đều lấy sự vui của tôi mà làm vui mình.

And I wrote the same to you so that when I came, I might not be myself pained by those who are the ones who ought to make me glad, for I trusted in you all and felt confident that my joy would be shared by all of you.

4 V ả, ấy là đương trong cơn khốn nạn lớn, tấm lòng quặn thắt, nước mắt dầm dề, mà tôi đã viết thơ cho anh em, nào phải để cho anh em âu sầu, nhưng để làm cho anh em biết tình yêu dấu riêng của tôi đối với anh em vậy.

For I wrote you out of great sorrow and deep distress of heart, with many tears, not to cause you pain but in order to make you realize the overflowing love that I continue increasingly to have for you.

5 N ếu kẻ nào làm cớ buồn rầu, ấy chẳng phải chỉ làm cho tôi buồn rầu mà thôi, nhưng đã làm cho anh em thảy đều buồn rầu ít nhiều, tôi chẳng muốn nói quá làm gì.

But if someone has caused grief and pain, he has caused it not to me, but in some measure, not to put it too severely, all of you.

6 K ẻ đó đã bị phần nhiều người trong anh em quở trách, ấy là đủ rồi;

For such a one this censure by the majority sufficient.

7 t hà nay anh em tha thứ yên ủi, hầu cho người khỏi bị sa ngã vì sự buồn rầu quá lớn.

So you should rather turn and forgive and comfort and encourage, to keep him from being overwhelmed by excessive sorrow and despair.

8 V ậy tôi xin anh em hãy bày tỏ lòng yêu thương đối với người đó.

I therefore beg you to reinstate him in your affections and assure him of your love for him;

9 B ởi chưng tôi viết thơ cho anh em, cốt để thử anh em xem có vâng lời trong cả mọi sự cùng chăng.

For this was my purpose in writing you, to test your attitude and see if you would stand the test, whether you are obedient and altogether agreeable in everything.

10 N hưng anh em tha thứ ai, thì tôi cũng tha thứ. Vả, nếu tôi đã tha, là vì anh em mà tha, ở trước mặt Đấng Christ,

If you forgive anyone anything, I too forgive that one; and what I have forgiven, if I have forgiven anything, has been for your sakes in the presence of Christ (the Messiah),

11 h ầu đừng để cho quỉ Sa-tan thắng chúng ta, vì chúng ta chẳng phải là không biết mưu chước của nó.

To keep Satan from getting the advantage over us; for we are not ignorant of his wiles and intentions.

12 L ại khi tôi đã đến thành Trô-ách đặng giảng Tin Lành của Đấng Christ, dầu Chúa đã mở cửa cho tôi ở đó,

Now when I arrived at Troas the good news (the Gospel) of Christ, a door of opportunity was opened for me in the Lord,

13 m à vì tôi không gặp anh em tôi là Tít, nên chẳng được yên lòng. Vậy sau khi từ giã các tín đồ, thì tôi qua xứ Ma-xê-đoan.

Yet my spirit could not rest (relax, get relief) because I did not find my brother Titus there. So I took leave from them and departed for Macedonia.

14 S ong tạ ơn Đức Chúa Trời, Ngài làm cho chúng tôi được thắng trong Đấng Christ luôn luôn, và bởi chúng tôi, Ngài rải mùi thơm về sự nhận biết Ngài khắp chốn!

But thanks be to God, Who in Christ always leads us in triumph and through us spreads and makes evident the fragrance of the knowledge of God everywhere,

15 V ì chúng tôi ở trước mặt Đức Chúa Trời là mùi thơm của Đấng Christ, ở giữa kẻ được cứu, và ở giữa kẻ bị hư mất;

For we are the sweet fragrance of Christ unto God, among those who are being saved and among those who are perishing:

16 c ho kẻ nầy, mùi của sự chết làm cho chết; cho kẻ kia, mùi của sự sống làm cho sống. Ai xứng đáng cho những sự nầy?

To the latter it is an aroma from death to death; to the former it is an aroma from life to life. And who is qualified (fit and sufficient) for these things?

17 V ả, chúng tôi chẳng giả mạo lời của Đức Chúa Trời như nhiều kẻ khác; nhưng chúng tôi lấy lòng chân thật, theo như đạo từ Đức Chúa Trời đến thể nào, thì giảng ra thể ấy trước mặt Đức Chúa Trời, trong Đấng Christ.

For we are not, like so many, peddling God’s Word; but like of sincerity and the purest motive, as by God, we speak in Christ (the Messiah), in the sight and presence of God.
