V ả, ấy là đương trong cơn khốn nạn lớn, tấm lòng quặn thắt, nước mắt dầm dề, mà tôi đã viết thơ cho anh em, nào phải để cho anh em âu sầu, nhưng để làm cho anh em biết tình yêu dấu riêng của tôi đối với anh em vậy.

For I wrote you out of great sorrow and deep distress of heart, with many tears, not to cause you pain but in order to make you realize the overflowing love that I continue increasingly to have for you.
