1 T hầy các thượng phẩm bèn hỏi Ê-tiên rằng: Có phải thật như vậy chăng?

And the high priest asked, Are these charges true?

2 Ê -tiên trả lời rằng: Hỡi các anh, các cha, xin nghe lời tôi! Đức Chúa Trời vinh hiển đã hiện ra cùng tổ chúng ta là A

And he answered, Brethren and fathers, listen to me! The God of glory appeared to our forefather Abraham when he was still in Mesopotamia, before he live in Haran,

3 m à phán rằng: Hãy ra khỏi quê hương và bà con ngươi, mà đi đến xứ ta sẽ chỉ cho.

And He said to him, Leave your own country and your relatives and come into the land (region) that I will point out to you.

4 B ấy giờ người ra khỏi xứ Canh-đê, rồi đến thành Cha-ran. Từ đó, lúc cha người qua đời rồi, Đức Chúa Trời khiến người từ nơi đó qua xứ các ông hiện đương ở;

So then he went forth from the land of the Chaldeans and settled in Haran. And from there, after his father died, transferred him to this country in which you are now dwelling.

5 N gài chẳng ban cho người sản nghiệp gì trong xứ nầy, dầu một thẻo đất lọt bàn chơn cũng không, nhưng Ngài hứa ban xứ nầy làm kỉ vật cho người và dòng dõi người nữa, dẫu bấy giờ người chưa có con cái mặc lòng.

Yet He gave him no inheritable property in it, not even enough ground to set his foot on; but He promised that He would give it to Him for a permanent possession and to his descendants after him, even though he had no child.

6 Đ ức Chúa Trời phán như vầy: Dòng dõi ngươi sẽ ở ngụ nơi đất khách, người ta sẽ bắt chúng nó làm tôi và hà hiếp trong bốn trăm năm.

And this is what God told him: That his descendants would be aliens (strangers) in a land belonging to other people, who would bring them into bondage and ill-treat them 400 years.

7 Đ ức Chúa Trời lại phán rằng: Nhưng ta sẽ đoán xét dân đã bắt chúng nó làm tôi, kế đó, chúng nó sẽ ra khỏi, và thờ phượng ta trong nơi nầy.

But I will judge the nation to whom they will be slaves, said God, and after that they will escape and come forth and worship Me in this place.

8 Đ oạn, Đức Chúa Trời ban cho người sự giao ước về phép cắt bì. Aáy vậy, khi A

And made with Abraham a covenant (an agreement to be religiously observed) of which circumcision was the seal. And under these circumstances became the father of Isaac and circumcised him on the eighth day; and Isaac when he became the father of Jacob, and Jacob, the twelve patriarchs.

9 M ười hai tổ phụ ghen ghét Giô-sép, nên bán qua xứ Ê-díp-tô; nhưng Đức Chúa Trời ở cùng người.

And the patriarchs, boiling with envy and hatred and anger, sold Joseph into slavery in Egypt; but God was with him,

10 N gài giải cứu người khỏi cảnh khó khăn, và cho đầy ơn và trí trước mặt Pha-ra-ôn, vua Ê-díp-tô, vua ấy lập người làm tể tướng cai quản xứ Ê-díp-tô và cả nhà vua nữa.

And delivered him from all his distressing afflictions and won him goodwill and favor and wisdom and understanding in the sight of Pharaoh, king of Egypt, who made him governor over Egypt and all his house.

11 B ấy giờ, xảy có cơn đói kém trong cả xứ Ê-díp-tô và xứ Ca-na-an; sự túng ngặt lớn lắm, tổ phụ chúng ta chẳng tìm được đồ ăn.

Then there came a famine over all of Egypt and Canaan, with great distress, and our forefathers could find no fodder or vegetable sustenance.

12 G ia-cốp nghe bên Ê-díp-tô có lúa mì, thì sai tổ phụ ta qua đó lần thứ nhứt.

But when Jacob heard that there was grain in Egypt, he sent forth our forefathers first trip.

13 Đ ến lần thứ hai, anh em Giô-sép nhận biết người, và Pha-ra-ôn mới biết dòng họ người.

And on their second visit Joseph revealed himself to his brothers, and the family of Joseph became known to Pharaoh and his origin and race.

14 G iô-sép bèn sai rước Gia-cốp là cha mình và cả nhà, cộng là bảy mươi lăm người.

And Joseph sent an invitation calling to himself Jacob his father and all his kindred, seventy-five persons in all.

15 V ậy, Gia-cốp xuống xứ Ê-díp-tô, rồi chết tại đó, và tổ phụ chúng ta cũng vậy;

And Jacob went down into Egypt, where he himself died, as did our forefathers;

16 s au được đem về Si-chem, chôn nơi mộ mà A

And their bodies were taken back to Shechem and laid in the tomb which Abraham had purchased for a sum of money from the sons of Hamor in Shechem.

17 N hưng, gần đến kỳ phải ứng nghiệm lời hứa Đức Chúa Trời đã thề với A

But as the time for the fulfillment of the promise drew near which God had made to Abraham, the people increased and multiplied in Egypt,

18 c ho đến khi trong xứ đó có một vua khác dấy lên, chẳng nhìn biết Giô-sép.

Until there arose over Egypt another and a different king who did not know Joseph.

19 V ua nầy dùng mưu hại dòng giống và hà hiếp tổ phụ chúng ta, ép phải bỏ con mới sanh, hầu cho sống chẳng được.

He dealt treacherously with and defrauded our race; he abused and oppressed our forefathers, forcing them to expose their babies so that they might not be kept alive.

20 T rong lúc đó, Môi-se sanh ra; người xinh tốt khác thường, được nuôi trong ba tháng tại nhà cha mình.

At this juncture Moses was born, and was exceedingly beautiful in God’s sight. For three months he was nurtured in his father’s house;

21 K hi người bị bỏ, thì con gái Pha-ra-ôn vớt lấy, nuôi làm con mình.

Then when he was exposed, the daughter of Pharaoh rescued him and took him and reared him as her own son.

22 M ôi-se được học cả sự khôn ngoan của người Ê-díp-tô; lời nói và việc làm đều có tài năng.

So Moses was educated in all the wisdom and culture of the Egyptians, and he was mighty (powerful) in his speech and deeds.

23 N hưng lúc người được đầy bốn mươi tuổi rồi, trong lòng nhớ đến, muốn đi thăm anh em mình là con cái Y-sơ-ra-ên.

And when he was in his fortieth year, it came into his heart to visit his kinsmen the children of Israel '> to help them and to care for them].

24 M ôi-se thấy có người hà hiếp một người trong đám họ, nên binh vực kẻ bị hà hiếp và đánh người Ê-díp-tô để báo thù cho.

And on seeing one of them being unjustly treated, he defended the oppressed man and avenged him by striking down the Egyptian and slaying.

25 N gười ngờ anh em mình chắc hiểu rằng Đức Chúa Trời dùng tay mình giải cứu họ; nhưng họ chẳng hiểu.

He expected his brethren to understand that God was granting them deliverance by his hand; but they did not understand.

26 Đ ến ngày sau, chúng đang đánh lộn với nhau, thì người đến gần mà giải hòa, rằng: Hỡi các ngươi, đã là anh em, sao lại làm hại nhau vậy?

Then on the next day he suddenly appeared to some who were quarreling and fighting among themselves, and he urged them to make peace and become reconciled, saying, Men, you are brethren; why do you abuse and wrong one another?

27 K ẻ đang ức hiếp người lân cận mình xô Môi se ra, mà rằng: Ai đã lập ngươi lên làm quan cai trị và quan xử đoán chúng ta?

Whereupon the man who was abusing his neighbor pushed aside, saying, Who appointed you a ruler (umpire) and a judge over us?

28 H á ngươi muốn giết ta như hôm qua đã giết người Ê-díp-tô sao?

Do you intend to slay me as you slew the Egyptian yesterday?

29 M ôi-se vừa nghe lời đó thì trốn đi ở trong xứ Ma-đi-an, nơi đó người sanh được hai con trai.

At that reply Moses sought safety by flight and he was an exile and an alien in the country of Midian, where he became the father of two sons.

30 C ách bốn mươi năm, một thiên sứ hiện ra cùng người, tại đồng vắng núi Si-na -i, trong ngọn lửa nơi bụi gai đương cháy.

And when forty years had gone by, there appeared to him in the wilderness (desert) of Mount Sinai an angel, in the flame of a burning bramblebush.

31 M ôi-se thấy vậy, lấy làm lạ về sự hiện ra đó, đang áp lại để xem cho gần hơn, thì nghe tiếng Chúa phán rằng:

When Moses saw it, he was astonished and marveled at the sight; but when he went close to investigate, there came to him the voice of the Lord, saying,

32 T a là Đức Chúa Trời của tổ phụ ngươi, Đức Chúa Trời của A

I am the God of your forefathers, the God of Abraham and of Isaac and of Jacob. And Moses trembled and was so terrified that he did not venture to look.

33 C húa bèn phán rằng: Hãy cổi giày ở chơn ngươi ra; vì chỗ mà ngươi đứng đó là một nơi đất thánh.

Then the Lord said to him, Remove the sandals from your feet, for the place where you are standing is holy ground and worthy of veneration.

34 T a đã đoái xem và thấy cảnh khó khăn của dân ta trong xứ Ê-díp-tô, ta đã nghe tiếng than thở của chúng nó, và xuống đặng giải cứu. Bây giờ hãy đến, đặng ta sai ngươi qua xứ Ê-díp-tô.

Because I have most assuredly seen the abuse and oppression of My people in Egypt and have heard their sighing and groaning, I have come down to rescue them. So, now come! I will send you back to Egypt.

35 M ôi-se nầy là người họ đã bỏ ra, và rằng: Ai đã lập ngươi lên làm quan cai trị và quan đoán xét chúng ta? Aáy là người mà Đức Chúa Trời đã sai làm quan cai trị và đấng giải cứu cậy tay một thiên sứ đã hiện ra với người trong bụi gai.

It was this very Moses whom they had denied (disowned and rejected), saying, Who made you our ruler (referee) and judge? whom God sent to be a ruler and deliverer and redeemer, by and with the hand of the Angel that appeared to him in the bramblebush.

36 A áy là người đã đem họ ra khỏi, làm những dấu kỳ phép lạ trong xứ Ê-díp-tô, trên Biển-đỏ, và nơi đồng vắng trong bốn mươi năm.

He it was who led them forth, having worked wonders and signs in Egypt and at the Red Sea and during the forty years in the wilderness (desert).

37 A áy là Môi-se nầy đã nói cùng con cái Y-sơ-ra-ên rằng: Đức Chúa Trời sẽ dấy lên trong hàng anh em các ngươi một đấng tiên tri giống như ta.

It was this Moses who said to the children of Israel, God will raise up for you a Prophet from among your brethren as He raised me up.

38 A áy là người, trong dân hội tại nơi đồng vắng, đã ở với thiên sứ, là đấng phán cùng người trên núi Si-na -i, và với tổ phụ chúng ta, người lại nhận lấy những lời sự ống đặng trao lại cho các ngươi.

This is he who in the assembly in the wilderness (desert) was the go-between for the Angel who spoke to him on Mount Sinai and our forefathers, and he received living oracles (words that still live) to be handed down to us.

39 A áy là người là tổ phụ chúng ta không chịu vâng lời, đã bỏ người đặng nghiêng lòng về xứ Ê-díp-tô,

our forefathers determined not to be subject to him; but thrusting him aside they rejected him, and in their hearts yearned for and turned back to Egypt.

40 v à nói với A-rôn rằng: Hãy làm các thần đi trước chúng ta; vì về phần Môi-se nầy, là người đã dẫn chúng ta ra khỏi xứ Ê-díp-tô, chẳng biết có điều chi xảy đến cho người rồi.

And they said to Aaron, Make us gods who shall go before us; as for this Moses who led us forth from the land of Egypt—we have no knowledge of what has happened to him.

41 T rong những ngày đó, họ đúc một tượng bò con, dâng tế lễ cho tượng và vui mừng về việc tay mình làm nên.

And they made a calf in those days, and offered sacrifice to the idol and made merry and exulted in the work of their hands.

42 Đ ức Chúa Trời bèn lìa bỏ họ, phú họ thờ lạy cơ binh trên trời, như có chép trong sách các đấng tiên tri rằng: Hỡi nhà Y-sơ-ra-ên, vậy có phải các ngươi từng dâng con sinh và của lễ cho ta, Trong bốn mươi năm ở nơi đồng vắng,

But God turned and delivered them up to worship and serve the host (stars) of heaven, as it is written in the book of the prophets: Did you offer to Me slain beasts and sacrifices for forty years in the wilderness (desert), O house of Israel?

43 K hi các ngươi khiêng nhà trại của Mo-lóc Và ngôi sao của thần Pom-phan, Tức là những hình tượng mà các ngươi làm ra để thờ lạy chăng? Ta cũng sẽ đày các ngươi qua bên kia Ba-by-lôn.

You took up the tent (the portable temple) of Moloch and carried it, and the star of the god Rephan, the images which you made that you might worship them; and I will remove you beyond Babylon.

44 Đ ền tạm chứng cớ vốn ở giữa tổ phụ chúng ta trong đồng vắng, như Chúa đã truyền lịnh cho Môi-se phải là y theo kiểu mẫu người đã thấy.

Our forefathers had the tent (tabernacle) of witness in the wilderness, even as He Who directed Moses to make it had ordered, according to the pattern and model he had seen.

45 T ổ phụ chúng ta đã nhận lấy đền tạm ấy, rồi đồng đi với Giô-suê đem vào xứ họ đã chiếm lấy của các dân mà Đức Chúa Trời đã đuổi khỏi trước mặt họ; đền tạm cứ ở đó cho đến đời vua Đa-vít,

Our forefathers in turn brought it in with Joshua when they dispossessed the nations which God drove out before the face of our forefathers. until the time of David,

46 l à người được ơn trước mặt Đức Chúa Trời, và xin ban một chỗ ở cho Đức Chúa Trời của Gia-cốp.

Who found grace (favor and spiritual blessing) in the sight of God and prayed that he might be allowed to find a dwelling place for the God of Jacob.

47 K ế đó, vua Sa-lô-môn cất cho Chúa một cái nhà.

But it was Solomon who built a house for Him.

48 N hưng Đấng Rất Cao chẳng ở trong nhà bởi tay người ta làm ra, như đấng tiên tri đã nói:

However, the Most High does not dwell in houses and temples made with hands; as the prophet says,

49 C húa phán: Trời là ngai ta, Đất là bệ chơn ta. Nào có nhà nào các ngươi cất cho ta, Có nơi nào cho ta yên nghỉ chăng?

Heaven My throne, and earth the footstool for My feet. What house can you build for Me, says the Lord, or what is the place in which I can rest?

50 H á chẳng phải tay ta đã dựng nên mọi vật nầy chăng?

Was it not My hand that made all these things?

51 H ỡi những người cứng cổ, lòng và tai chẳng cắt bì kia! Các ngươi cứ nghịch với Đức Thánh Linh hoài; tổ-phụ các ngươi thế nào, thì các ngươi cũng thế ấy!

You stubborn and stiff-necked people, still heathen and uncircumcised in heart and ears, you are always actively resisting the Holy Spirit. As your forefathers, so you!

52 H á có đấng tiên tri nào mà tổ phụ các ngươi chẳng bắt bớ ư? Họ cũng đã giết những người nói tiên tri về sự đến của Đấng Công bình; và hiện bây giờ chính các ngươi lại đã nộp và giết Đấng đó;

Which of the prophets did your forefathers not persecute? And they slew those who proclaimed beforehand the coming of the Righteous One, Whom you now have betrayed and murdered—

53 c ác ngươi đã nhận luật pháp truyền bởi các thiên sứ, nhưng không giữ lấy!

You who received the Law as it was ordained and set in order and delivered by angels, and you did not obey it!

54 C húng nghe những lời đó, thì giận trong lòng, và nghiến răng với Ê-tiên.

Now upon hearing these things, they were cut to the heart and infuriated, and they ground their teeth against.

55 N hưng người, được đầy dẫy Đức Thánh Linh, mắt ngó chăm lên trời, thấy sự vinh hiển của Đức Chúa Trời, và Đức Chúa Jêsus đứng bên hữu Đức Chúa Trời;

But he, full of the Holy Spirit and controlled by Him, gazed into heaven and saw the glory (the splendor and majesty) of God, and Jesus standing at God’s right hand;

56 t hì người nói rằng: Kìa, ta thấy các từng trời mở ra, và Con người đứng bên hữu Đức Chúa Trời.

And he said, Look! I see the heavens opened, and the Son of man standing at God’s right hand!

57 B ấy giờ, chúng kêu lớn tiếng lên, bịt lỗ tai lại, cùng nhau chạy a lại,

But they raised a great shout and put their hands over their ears and rushed together upon him.

58 k éo người ra ngoài thành, rồi ném đá người. Các kẻ làm chứng lấy áo xống mình để nơi chơn một người trẻ tuổi kia tên là Sau-lơ.

Then they dragged him out of the city and began to stone him, and the witnesses placed their garments at the feet of a young man named Saul.

59 C húng đang ném đá, thì Ê-tiên cầu nguyện rằng: Lạy Đức Chúa Jêsus, xin tiếp lấy linh hồn tôi.

And while they were stoning Stephen, he prayed, Lord Jesus, receive and accept and welcome my spirit!

60 Đ oạn, người quì xuống, kêu lớn tiếng rằng: Lạy Chúa, xin đừng đổ tội nầy cho họ! Người vừa nói lời đó rồi thì ngủ.

And falling on his knees, he cried out loudly, Lord, fix not this sin upon them! And when he had said this, he fell asleep.
