1 S áu ngày trước lễ Vượt Qua, Đức Chúa Jêsus đến thành Bê-tha-ni, nơi La-xa-rơ ở, là người Ngài đã khiến sống lại từ kẻ chết.

So six days before the Passover Feast, Jesus came to Bethany, where Lazarus was, who had died and whom He had raised from the dead.

2 N gười ta đãi tiệc Ngài tại đó, và Ma-thê hầu hạ; La-xa-rơ là một người trong đám ngồi đồng bàn với Ngài.

So they made Him a supper; and Martha served, but Lazarus was one of those at the table with Him.

3 B ấy giờ, Ma-ri lấy một cân dầu cam tùng hương thật, quí giá, xức chơn Đức Chúa Trời, và lấy tóc mình mà lau; cả nhà thơm nức mùi dầu đó.

Mary took a pound of ointment of pure liquid nard that was very expensive, and she poured it on Jesus’ feet and wiped them with her hair. And the whole house was filled with the fragrance of the perfume.

4 N hưng Giu-đa Ích-ca-ri-ốt, là một môn đồ về sau phản Ngài, nói rằng:

But Judas Iscariot, the one of His disciples who was about to betray Him, said,

5 S ao không bán dầu thơm đó lấy ba trăm đơ-ni-ê đặng bố thí cho kẻ nghèo?

Why was this perfume not sold for 300 denarii and that given to the poor (the destitute)?

6 N gười nói vậy, chẳng phải là cho kẻ nghèo đâu, song vì người vốn là tay trộm cướp, và giữ túi bạc, trộm lấy của người ta để ở trong.

Now he did not say this because he cared for the poor but because he was a thief; and having the bag (the money box, the purse of the Twelve), he took for himself what was put into it.

7 Đ ức Chúa Jêsus đáp rằng: Hãy để mặc người, người đã để dành dầu thơm nầy cho ngày chôn xác ta.

But Jesus said, Let her alone. It was that she should keep it for the time of My preparation for burial. '> embalming.]

8 V ì các ngươi thường có kẻ nghèo ở với mình, còn ta, các ngươi không có ta luôn luôn.

You always have the poor with you, but you do not always have Me.

9 M ột bọn người Giu-đa nghe Đức Chúa Jêsus có tại đó, bèn đến, chẳng những vì Ngài thôi, lại cũng để xem La-xa-rơ, là người Ngài đã khiến từ kẻ chết sống lại.

Now a great crowd of the Jews heard that He was at Bethany, and they came there, not only because of Jesus but that they also might see Lazarus, whom He had raised from the dead.

10 C ác thầy tế lễ cả bèn định giết luôn La-xa-rơ nữa,

So the chief priests planned to put Lazarus to death also,

11 v ì có nhiều người Giu-đa nhơn cớ người mà chia rẽ họ và tin theo Đức Chúa Jêsus.

Because on account of him many of the Jews were going away and believing in and adhering to Jesus.

12 Q ua ngày sau, có một đám dân đông đến đặng dự lễ, biết Đức Chúa Jêsus lên thành Giê-ru-sa-lem,

The next day a vast crowd of those who had come to the Passover Feast heard that Jesus was coming to Jerusalem.

13 b èn lấy những lá kè ra đón Ngài, và reo lên rằng: Hô-sa-na! Chúc phước cho Đấng nhơn danh Chúa mà đến, là Vua của Y-sơ-ra-ên!

So they took branches of palm trees and went out to meet Him. And as they went, they kept shouting, Hosanna! Blessed is He and praise to Him Who comes in the name of the Lord, even the King of Israel!

14 Đ ức Chúa Jêsus gặp một con lừa con, bèn lên cỡi, y như lời chép rằng:

And Jesus, having found a young donkey, rode upon it, as it is written in the Scriptures,

15 H ỡi con gái thành Si-ôn, chớ sợ chi, nầy, Vua ngươi đến, cỡi trên lừa con của lừa cái.

Do not fear, O Daughter of Zion! Look! Your King is coming, sitting on a donkey’s colt!

16 M ôn đồ trước vốn không hiểu điều đó; nhưng đến khi Đức Chúa Jêsus đã được vinh hiển, mới nhớ lại những sự đó đã chép về Ngài, và người ta đã làm thành cho Ngài.

His disciples did not understand and could not comprehend the meaning of these things at first; but when Jesus was glorified and exalted, they remembered that these things had been written about Him and had been done to Him.

17 Đ oàn dân ở cùng Ngài, khi Ngài kêu La-xa-rơ ra khỏi mộ và khiến từ kẻ chết sống lại, đều làm chứng về Ngài.

The group that had been with Jesus when He called Lazarus out of the tomb and raised him from among the dead kept telling it to others.

18 A áy cũng tại điều đó mà đoàn dân đi đón Ngài, vì có nghe rằng Ngài đã làm phép lạ ấy.

It was for this reason that the crowd went out to meet Him, because they had heard that He had performed this sign (proof, miracle).

19 N hơn đó, người Pha-ri-si nói với nhau rằng: Các ngươi thấy mình chẳng làm nổi chi hết; kìa, cả thiên hạ đều chạy theo người!

Then the Pharisees said among themselves, You see how futile your efforts are and how you accomplish nothing. See! The whole world is running after Him!

20 V ả, trong đám đã lên đặng thờ lạy trong kỳ lễ, có mấy người Gờ-réc,

Now among those who went up to worship at the Feast were some Greeks.

21 đ ến tìm Phi-líp, là người ở thành Bết-sai-đa, thuộc xứ Ga-li-lê, mà xin rằng: Thưa chúa, chúng tôi muốn ra mắt Đức Chúa Jêsus.

These came to Philip, who was from Bethsaida in Galilee, and they made this request, Sir, we desire to see Jesus.

22 P hi-líp đi nói với Anh-rê; rồi Anh-rê với Phi-líp đến thưa cùng Đức Chúa Jêsus.

Philip came and told Andrew; then Andrew and Philip together and told Jesus.

23 Đ ức Chúa Jêsus bèn đáp rằng: Giờ đã đến, khi Con người sẽ được vinh hiển.

And Jesus answered them, The time has come for the Son of Man to be glorified and exalted.

24 Q uả thật, quả thật, ta nói cùng các ngươi, nếu hột giống lúa mì kia, chẳng chết sau khi gieo xuống đất, thì cứ ở một mình; nhưng nếu chết đi, thì kết quả được nhiều.

I assure you, most solemnly I tell you, Unless a grain of wheat falls into the earth and dies, it remains by itself alone. But if it dies, it produces many others and yields a rich harvest.

25 A i yêu sự sống mình thì sẽ mất đi, ai ghét sự sống mình trong đời nầy thì sẽ giữ lại đến sự sống đời đời.

Anyone who loves his life loses it, but anyone who hates his life in this world will keep it to life eternal.

26 N ếu ai hầu việc ta, thì phải theo ta, và ta ở đâu, thì kẻ hầu việc ta cũng sẽ ở đó; nếu ai hầu việc ta, thì Cha ta ắt tôn quí người.

If anyone serves Me, he must continue to follow Me '> to cleave steadfastly to Me, conform wholly to My example in living and, if need be, in dying] and wherever I am, there will My servant be also. If anyone serves Me, the Father will honor him.

27 H iện nay tâm thần ta bối rối; ta sẽ nói gì? Lạy Cha, xin cứu Con khỏi giờ nầy! nhưng ấy cũng vì sự đó mà Con đến giờ nầy!

Now My soul is troubled and distressed, and what shall I say? Father, save Me from this hour ? But it was for this very purpose that I have come to this hour.

28 C ha ơi, xin làm sáng danh Cha! Bấy giờ có tiếng từ trên trời phán xuống rằng: Ta đã làm sáng danh rồi, ta còn làm cho sáng danh nữa!

Father, glorify (honor and extol) Your name! Then there came a voice out of heaven saying, I have already glorified it, and I will glorify it again.

29 Đ oàn dân ở tại đó nghe tiếng thì nói rằng ấy là tiếng sấm; có kẻ khác nói: Một vị thiên sứ nào nói với Ngài.

The crowd of bystanders heard the sound and said that it had thundered; others said, An angel has spoken to Him!

30 Đ ức Chúa Jêsus cất tiếng phán rằng: Aáy chẳng phải vì ta mà tiếng nầy vang ra, nhưng vì các ngươi.

Jesus answered, This voice has not come for My sake, but for your sake.

31 H iện bây giờ, có sự phán xét thế gian nầy, và hiện nay vua chúa của thế gian nầy phải bị xua đuổi.

Now the judgment (crisis) of this world is coming on. Now the ruler (evil genius, prince) of this world shall be cast out (expelled).

32 C òn ta, khi ta đã được treo lên khỏi đất, ta sẽ kéo mọi người đến cùng ta.

And I, if and when I am lifted up from the earth, will draw and attract all men to Myself.

33 N gài phán vậy để chỉ mình phải chết cách nào.

He said this to signify in what manner He would die.

34 Đ oàn dân thưa rằng: Chúng tôi có họ trong luật pháp rằng Đấng Christ còn đời đời, vậy sao thầy nói Con người phải bị treo lên? Con người đó là ai?

At this the people answered Him, We have learned from the Law that the Christ is to remain forever; how then can You say, The Son of Man must be lifted up ? Who is this Son of Man?

35 Đ ức Chúa Jêsus bèn đáp rằng: Sự sáng còn ở giữa các ngươi ít lâu; hãy đi trong khi các ngươi còn có sự sáng, e rằng sự tối tăm đến thình lình cùng các ngươi chăng; kẻ đi trong nơi tối tăm thì chẳng biết mình đi đâu.

So Jesus said to them, You will have the Light only a little while longer. Walk while you have the Light, so that darkness may not overtake and overcome you. He who walks about in the dark does not know where he goes.

36 C ác ngươi đương có sự sáng, hãy tin sự sáng, hầu cho trở nên con cái của sự sáng. Đức Chúa Jêsus phán như vậy, rồi đi, và ẩn mình cách xa họ.

While you have the Light, believe in the Light, that you may become sons of the Light and be filled with Light. Jesus said these things, and then He went away and hid Himself from them.

37 V ả, dẫu Ngài đã làm bấy nhiêu phép lạ trước mặt chúng, họ cũng không tin Ngài,

Even though He had done so many miracles before them (right before their eyes), yet they still did not trust in Him and failed to believe in Him—

38 đ ể được ứng nghiệm lời nầy của đấng tiên tri Ê-sai: Lạy Chúa, ai đã tin lời giảng chúng tôi, Và cánh tay Chúa đã tỏ ra cho ai?

So that what Isaiah the prophet said was fulfilled: Lord, who has believed our report and our message? And to whom has the arm (the power) of the Lord been shown (unveiled and revealed)?

39 V ả lại, chúng không thể tin, vì Ê-sai lại có nói rằng:

Therefore they could not believe. For Isaiah has also said,

40 N gài đã khiến mắt họ mù, lòng họ cứng, Hầu cho mắt chẳng thấy, lòng chẳng hiểu, Không tự hối cải, Và ta chẳng chữa lành cho.

He has blinded their eyes and hardened and benumbed their hearts, to keep them from seeing with their eyes and understanding with their hearts and minds and repenting and turning to Me to heal them.

41 Ê -sai nói điều đó, khi thấy sự vinh hiển của Ngài và nói về Ngài.

Isaiah said this because he saw His glory and spoke of Him.

42 N hưng, trong hàng quan trưởng cũng có nhiều người tin Đức Chúa Jêsus; song vì cớ người Pha-ri-si, nên không xưng Ngài ra, sợ bị đuổi khỏi nhà hội chăng.

And yet many even of the leading men (the authorities and the nobles) believed and trusted in Him. But because of the Pharisees they did not confess it, for fear that they would be expelled from the synagogue;

43 V ì họ chuộng danh vọng bởi người ta đến hơn là danh vọng bởi Đức Chúa Trời đến.

For they loved the approval and the praise and the glory that come from men more than the glory that comes from God.

44 T uy vậy, Đức Chúa Jêsus cất tiếng phán rằng: Ai tin ta, chẳng phải tin ta, nhưng tin Đấng đã sai ta đến.

But Jesus loudly declared, The one who believes in Me does not believe in and trust in and rely on Me, but in Him Who sent Me.

45 C òn ai thấy ta, là thấy Đấng đã sai ta đến.

And whoever sees Me sees Him Who sent Me.

46 T a là sự sáng đã đến thế gian, để ai tin ta, chẳng ở nơi tối tăm nữa.

I have come as a Light into the world, so that whoever believes in Me may not continue to live in darkness.

47 L ại nếu kẻ nào nghe lời ta mà không vâng giữ ấy chẳng phải ta xét đoán kẻ đó; vì ta đến chẳng để xét đoán thế gian, nhưng để cứu chuộc.

If anyone hears My teachings and fails to observe them, it is not I who judges him. For I have not come to judge and to condemn and to pass sentence and to inflict penalty on the world, but to save the world.

48 N gười nào bỏ ta ra và không nhận lãnh lời ta, đã có kẻ xét đoán rồi; lời ta đã rao giảng, chính lời đó sẽ xét đoán họ nơi ngày sau cùng.

Anyone who rejects Me and persistently sets Me at naught, refusing to accept My teachings, has his judge; for the message that I have spoken will itself judge and convict him at the last day.

49 B ởi ta chẳng nói theo ý riêng ta; nhưng Cha sai ta đến, đã truyền lịnh cho ta phải nói điều chi và phải nói thể nào.

This is because I have never spoken on My own authority or of My own accord or as self-appointed, but the Father Who sent Me has Himself given Me orders what to say and what to tell.

50 T a biết mạng lịnh Cha, ấy là sự sống đời đời. Vậy, những điều ta nói, thì nói theo như Cha ta đã dặn.

And I know that His commandment is (means) eternal life. So whatever I speak, I am saying what My Father has told Me to say and in accordance with His instructions.
