1 H ết thảy các người thâu thuế và người có tội đến gần Đức Chúa Jêsus đặng nghe Ngài giảng.

Now the tax collectors and '> especially wicked] sinners were all coming near to to listen to Him.

2 C ác người Pha-ri-si và các thầy thông giáo lằm bằm mà nói rằng: Người nầy tiếp những kẻ tội lỗi, và cùng ăn với họ!

And the Pharisees and the scribes kept muttering and indignantly complaining, saying, This man accepts and receives and welcomes '> preeminently wicked] sinners and eats with them.

3 N gài bèn phán cho họ lời thí dụ nầy:

So He told them this parable:

4 T rong các ngươi ai là người có một trăm con chiên, nếu mất một con, mà không để chín mươi chín con nơi đồng vắng, đặng đi tìm con đã mất cho kỳ được sao?

What man of you, if he has a hundred sheep and should lose one of them, does not leave the ninety-nine in the wilderness (desert) and go after the one that is lost until he finds it?

5 K hi đã kiếm được, thì vui mừng vác nó lên vai;

And when he has found it, he lays it on his shoulders, rejoicing.

6 đ oạn, về đến nhà, kêu bạn hữu và kẻ lân cận, mà rằng: Hãy chung vui với ta, vì ta đã tìm được con chiên bị mất.

And when he gets home, he summons together friends and neighbors, saying to them, Rejoice with me, because I have found my sheep which was lost.

7 T a nói cùng các ngươi, trên trời cũng như vậy, sẽ vui mừng cho một kẻ có tội ăn năn hơn là chín mươi chín kẻ công bình không cần phải ăn năn.

Thus, I tell you, there will be more joy in heaven over one '> especially] wicked person who repents ( changes his mind, abhorring his errors and misdeeds, and determines to enter upon a better course of life) than over ninety-nine righteous persons who have no need of repentance.

8 H ay là, có người đờn bà nào có mười đồng bạc, mất một đồng, mà không thắp đèn, quét nhà, kiếm kỹ càng cho kỳ được sao?

Or what woman, having ten drachmas, if she loses one coin, does not light a lamp and sweep the house and look carefully and diligently until she finds it?

9 K hi tìm được rồi, gọi bầu bạn và người lân cận mình, mà rằng: Hãy chung vui với ta, vì ta đã tìm được đồng bạc bị mất.

And when she has found it, she summons her friends and neighbors, saying, Rejoice with me, for I have found the silver coin which I had lost.

10 T a nói cùng các ngươi, trước mặt thiên sứ của Đức Chúa Trời cũng như vậy, sẽ mừng rỡ cho một kẻ có tội ăn năn.

Even so, I tell you, there is joy among and in the presence of the angels of God over one '> especially] wicked person who repents ( changes his mind for the better, heartily amending his ways, with abhorrence of his past sins).

11 N gài lại phán rằng: Một người kia có hai con trai.

And He said, There was a certain man who had two sons;

12 N gười em nói với cha rằng: Thưa cha, xin chia cho tôi phần của mà tôi sẽ được. Người cha liền chia của mình cho hai con.

And the younger of them said to his father, Father, give me the part of the property that falls. And he divided the estate between them.

13 C ách ít ngày, người em tóm thâu hết, đi phương xa, ở đó, ăn chơi hoang đàng, tiêu sạch gia tài mình.

And not many days after that, the younger son gathered up all that he had and journeyed into a distant country, and there he wasted his fortune in reckless and loose living.

14 K hi đã xài hết của rồi, trong xứ xảy có cơn đói lớn; nó mới bị nghèo thiếu,

And when he had spent all he had, a mighty famine came upon that country, and he began to fall behind and be in want.

15 b èn đi làm mướn cho một người bổn xứ, thì họ sai ra đồng chăn heo.

So he went and forced (glued) himself upon one of the citizens of that country, who sent him into his fields to feed hogs.

16 N ó muốn lấy vỏ đậu của heo ăn mà ăn cho no, nhưng chẳng ai cho.

And he would gladly have fed on and filled his belly with the carob pods that the hogs were eating, but nobody gave him anything.

17 V ậy nó mới tỉnh ngộ, mà rằng: Tại nhà cha ta, biết bao người làm mướn được bánh ăn dư dật, mà ta đây phải chết đói!

Then when he came to himself, he said, How many hired servants of my father have enough food, and to spare, but I am perishing (dying) here of hunger!

18 T a sẽ đứng dậy trở về cùng cha, mà rằng: Thưa cha, tôi đã đặng tội với trời và với cha,

I will get up and go to my father, and I will say to him, Father, I have sinned against heaven and in your sight.

19 k hông đáng gọi là con của cha nữa; xin cha đãi tôi như đứa làm mướn của cha vậy.

I am no longer worthy to be called your son; make me like one of your hired servants.

20 N ó bèn đứng dậy mà về cùng cha mình. Khi còn ở đàng xa, cho nó thấy thì động lòng thương xót, chạy ra ôm lấy cổ mà hôn.

So he got up and came to his father. But while he was still a long way off, his father saw him and was moved with pity and tenderness; and he ran and embraced him and kissed him '> fervently].

21 C on thưa cùng cha rằng: Cha ơi, tôi đã đặng tội với trời và với cha, chẳng còn đáng gọi là con của cha nữa.

And the son said to him, Father, I have sinned against heaven and in your sight; I am no longer worthy to be called your son!

22 n hưng người cha bảo đầy tớ rằng: Hãy mau mau lấy áo tốt nhứt mặc cho nó; đeo nhẫn vào ngón tay, mang giày vào chơn.

But the father said to his bond servants, Bring quickly the best robe (the festive robe of honor) and put it on him; and give him a ring for his hand and sandals for his feet.

23 H ãy bắt bò con mập làm thịt đi. Chúng ta hãy ăn mừng,

And bring out that fattened calf and kill it; and let us revel and feast and be happy and make merry,

24 v ì con ta đây đã chết mà bây giờ lại sống, đã mất mà bây giờ lại thấy được. Đoạn, họ khởi sự vui mừng.

Because this my son was dead and is alive again; he was lost and is found! And they began to revel and feast and make merry.

25 V ả, con trai cả đương ở ngoài đồng. Khi trở về gần đến nhà, nghe tiếng đờn ca nhảy múa,

But his older son was in the field; and as he returned and came near the house, he heard music and dancing.

26 b èn gọi một đầy tớ mà hỏi cớ gì.

And having called one of the servant to him, he began to ask what this meant.

27 Đ ầy tớ thưa rằng: Em cậu bây giờ trở về, nên cha cậu đã làm thịt bò con mập, vì thấy em về được mạnh khỏe.

And he said to him, Your brother has come, and your father has killed that fattened calf, because he has received him back safe and well.

28 C on cả liền nổi giận, không muốn vào nhà. Vậy cha nó ra khuyên nó vào.

But was angry and resolved not to go in. Then his father came out and began to plead with him,

29 N hưng nó thưa cha rằng: Nầy, tôi giúp việc cha đã bấy nhiêu năm, chưa từng trái phép, mà cha chẳng hề cho tôi một con dê con đặng ăn chơi với bạn hữu tôi.

But he answered his father, Look! These many years I have served you, and I have never disobeyed your command. Yet you never gave me a kid, that I might revel and feast and be happy and make merry with my friends;

30 N hưng nay con của cha kia, là đứa đã ăn hết gia tài cha với phường điếm đĩ rồi trở về, thì cha vì nó làm thịt bò con mập!

But when this son of yours arrived, who has devoured your estate with immoral women, you have killed for him that fattened calf!

31 N gười cha nói rằng: Con ơi, con ở cùng cha luôn, hết thảy của cha là của con.

And the father said to him, Son, you are always with me, and all that is mine is yours.

32 N hưng thật nên dọn tiệc và vui mừng, vì em con đây đã chết mà lại sống, đã mất mà lại thấy được.

But it was fitting to make merry, to revel and feast and rejoice, for this brother of yours was dead and is alive again! He was lost and is found!
