1 Q uando dunque Gesù seppe che i farisei avevano udito che egli faceva e battezzava più discepoli di Giovanni

Now when the Lord knew (learned, became aware) that the Pharisees had been told that Jesus was winning and baptizing more disciples than John—

2 ( sebbene non fosse Gesù che battezzava, ma i suoi discepoli),

Though Jesus Himself did not baptize, but His disciples—

3 l asciò la Giudea e se ne andò di nuovo in Galilea.

He left Judea and returned to Galilee.

4 O ra doveva passare per la Samaria.

It was necessary for Him to go through Samaria.

5 G iunse dunque a una città della Samaria, chiamata Sicar, vicina al podere che Giacobbe aveva dato a suo figlio Giuseppe;

And in doing so, He arrived at a Samaritan town called Sychar, near the tract of land that Jacob gave to his son Joseph.

6 e là c’era la fonte di Giacobbe. Gesù dunque, stanco del cammino, stava così a sedere presso la fonte. Era circa l’ora sesta.

And Jacob’s well was there. So Jesus, tired as He was from His journey, sat down by the well. It was then about the sixth hour (about noon).

7 U na donna della Samaria venne ad attingere l’acqua. Gesù le disse: «Dammi da bere».

Presently, when a woman of Samaria came along to draw water, Jesus said to her, Give Me a drink—

8 ( Infatti i suoi discepoli erano andati in città a comprare da mangiare.)

For His disciples had gone off into the town to buy food—

9 L a donna samaritana allora gli disse: «Come mai tu che sei Giudeo chiedi da bere a me, che sono una donna samaritana?» Infatti i Giudei non hanno relazioni con i Samaritani.

The Samaritan woman said to Him, How is it that You, being a Jew, ask me, a Samaritan woman, for a drink?—For the Jews have nothing to do with the Samaritans—

10 G esù le rispose: «Se tu conoscessi il dono di Dio e chi è che ti dice: “Dammi da bere”, tu stessa gliene avresti chiesto, ed egli ti avrebbe dato dell’acqua viva».

Jesus answered her, If you had only known and had recognized God’s gift and Who this is that is saying to you, Give Me a drink, you would have asked Him and He would have given you living water.

11 L a donna gli disse: «Signore, tu non hai nulla per attingere, e il pozzo è profondo; da dove avresti dunque quest’acqua viva?

She said to Him, Sir, You have nothing to draw with and the well is deep; how then can You provide living water?

12 S ei tu più grande di Giacobbe, nostro padre, che ci diede questo pozzo e ne bevve egli stesso con i suoi figli e il suo bestiame?»

Are You greater than and superior to our ancestor Jacob, who gave us this well and who used to drink from it himself, and his sons and his cattle also?

13 G esù le rispose: «Chiunque beve di quest’acqua avrà di nuovo sete;

Jesus answered her, All who drink of this water will be thirsty again.

14 m a chi beve dell’acqua che io gli darò, non avrà mai più sete; anzi, l’acqua che io gli darò diventerà in lui una fonte d’acqua che scaturisce in vita eterna».

But whoever takes a drink of the water that I will give him shall never, no never, be thirsty any more. But the water that I will give him shall become a spring of water welling up (flowing, bubbling) within him unto (into, for) eternal life.

15 L a donna gli disse: «Signore, dammi di quest’acqua, affinché io non abbia più sete e non venga più fin qui ad attingere».

The woman said to Him, Sir, give me this water, so that I may never get thirsty nor have to come here to draw.

16 E gli le disse: «Va’ a chiamare tuo marito e vieni qua».

At this, Jesus said to her, Go, call your husband and come back here.

17 L a donna gli rispose: «Non ho marito». E Gesù: «Hai detto bene: “Non ho marito”,

The woman answered, I have no husband. Jesus said to her, You have spoken truly in saying, I have no husband.

18 p erché hai avuto cinque mariti, e quello che hai ora non è tuo marito; ciò che hai detto è vero».

For you have had five husbands, and the man you are now living with is not your husband. In this you have spoken truly.

19 L a donna gli disse: «Signore, vedo che tu sei un profeta.

The woman said to Him, Sir, I see and understand that You are a prophet.

20 I nostri padri hanno adorato su questo monte, ma voi dite che è a Gerusalemme il luogo dove bisogna adorare».

Our forefathers worshiped on this mountain, but you say that Jerusalem is the place where it is necessary and proper to worship.

21 G esù le disse: «Donna, credimi; l’ora viene che né su questo monte né a Gerusalemme adorerete il Padre.

Jesus said to her, Woman, believe Me, a time is coming when you will worship the Father neither in this mountain nor in Jerusalem.

22 V oi adorate quel che non conoscete; noi adoriamo quel che conosciamo, perché la salvezza viene dai Giudei.

You do not know what you are worshiping. We do know what we are worshiping, for salvation comes from the Jews.

23 M a l’ora viene, anzi è già venuta, che i veri adoratori adoreranno il Padre in spirito e verità; poiché il Padre cerca tali adoratori.

A time will come, however, indeed it is already here, when the true (genuine) worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and in truth (reality); for the Father is seeking just such people as these as His worshipers.

24 D io è Spirito, e quelli che lo adorano bisogna che lo adorino in spirito e verità».

God is a Spirit (a spiritual Being) and those who worship Him must worship Him in spirit and in truth (reality).

25 L a donna gli disse: «Io so che il Messia (che è chiamato Cristo) deve venire; quando sarà venuto ci annuncerà ogni cosa».

The woman said to Him, I know that Messiah is coming, He Who is called the Christ (the Anointed One); and when He arrives, He will tell us everything we need to know and make it clear to us.

26 G esù le disse: «Sono io, io che ti parlo!»

Jesus said to her, I Who now speak with you am He.

27 I n quel mentre giunsero i suoi discepoli e si meravigliarono che egli parlasse con una donna; eppure nessuno gli chiese: «Che cerchi?» o: «Perché discorri con lei?»

Just then His disciples came and they wondered (were surprised, astonished) to find Him talking with a woman. However, not one of them asked Him, What are You inquiring about? or What do You want? or, Why do You speak with her?

28 L a donna lasciò dunque la sua secchia, se ne andò in città e disse alla gente:

Then the woman left her water jar and went away to the town. And she began telling the people,

29 « Venite a vedere un uomo che mi ha detto tutto quello che ho fatto; non potrebbe essere lui il Cristo?»

Come, see a Man Who has told me everything that I ever did! Can this be the Christ?

30 L a gente uscì dalla città e andò da lui.

So the people left the town and set out to go to Him.

31 I ntanto i discepoli lo pregavano, dicendo: «Rabbì, mangia».

Meanwhile, the disciples urged Him saying, Rabbi, eat something.

32 M a egli disse loro: «Io ho un cibo da mangiare che voi non conoscete».

But He assured them, I have food (nourishment) to eat of which you know nothing and have no idea.

33 P erciò i discepoli si dicevano gli uni gli altri: «Forse qualcuno gli ha portato da mangiare?»

So the disciples said one to another, Has someone brought Him something to eat?

34 G esù disse loro: «Il mio cibo è fare la volontà di colui che mi ha mandato, e compiere l’opera sua.

Jesus said to them, My food (nourishment) is to do the will (pleasure) of Him Who sent Me and to accomplish and completely finish His work.

35 N on dite voi che ci sono ancora quattro mesi e poi viene la mietitura? Ebbene, vi dico: alzate gli occhi e guardate le campagne come già biancheggiano per la mietitura.

Do you not say, It is still four months until harvest time comes? Look! I tell you, raise your eyes and observe the fields and see how they are already white for harvesting.

36 I l mietitore riceve una ricompensa e raccoglie frutto per la vita eterna, affinché il seminatore e il mietitore si rallegrino insieme.

Already the reaper is getting his wages, for he is gathering fruit (crop) unto life eternal, so that he who does the planting and he who does the reaping may rejoice together.

37 P oiché in questo è vero il detto: “L’uno semina e l’altro miete”.

For in this the saying holds true, One sows and another reaps.

38 I o vi ho mandati a mietere là dove voi non avete faticato; altri hanno faticato, e voi siete subentrati nella loro fatica».

I sent you to reap a crop for which you have not toiled. Other men have labored and you have stepped in to reap the results of their work.

39 M olti Samaritani di quella città credettero in lui a motivo della testimonianza resa da quella donna: «Egli mi ha detto tutto quello che ho fatto».

Now numerous Samaritans from that town believed in and trusted in Him because of what the woman said when she declared and testified, He told me everything that I ever did.

40 Q uando dunque i Samaritani andarono da lui, lo pregarono di trattenersi da loro; ed egli si trattenne là due giorni.

So when the Samaritans arrived, they asked Him to remain with them, and He did stay there two days.

41 E molti di più credettero a motivo della sua parola

Then many more believed in and adhered to and relied on Him because of His personal message.

42 e dicevano alla donna: «Non è più a motivo di quello che tu ci hai detto, che crediamo; perché noi stessi abbiamo udito e sappiamo che questi è veramente il Salvatore del mondo». Gesù in Galilea; guarigione del figlio di un ufficiale

And they told the woman, Now we no longer believe (trust, have faith) just because of what you said; for we have heard Him ourselves, and we know that He truly is the Savior of the world, the Christ.

43 T rascorsi quei due giorni, egli partì di là per la Galilea;

But after these two days Jesus went on from there into Galilee—

44 p oiché Gesù stesso aveva attestato che un profeta non è onorato nella sua patria.

Although He Himself declared that a prophet has no honor in his own country.

45 Q uando dunque giunse in Galilea, fu accolto dai Galilei, perché avevano visto le cose che egli aveva fatte in Gerusalemme durante la festa; essi pure infatti erano andati alla festa.

However, when He came into Galilee, the Galileans also welcomed Him and took Him to their hearts eagerly, for they had seen everything that He did in Jerusalem during the Feast; for they too had attended the Feast.

46 E gli dunque venne di nuovo a Cana di Galilea, dove aveva cambiato l’acqua in vino. Vi era un ufficiale del re, il cui figlio era infermo a Capernaum.

So Jesus came again to Cana of Galilee, where He had turned the water into wine. And there was a certain royal official whose son was lying ill in Capernaum.

47 C ome egli ebbe udito che Gesù era venuto dalla Giudea in Galilea, andò da lui e lo pregò che scendesse e guarisse suo figlio, perché stava per morire.

Having heard that Jesus had come back from Judea into Galilee, he went away to meet Him and began to beg Him to come down and cure his son, for he was lying at the point of death.

48 P erciò Gesù gli disse: «Se non vedete segni e miracoli, voi non crederete».

Then Jesus said to him, Unless you see signs and miracles happen, you never will believe (trust, have faith) at all.

49 L ’ufficiale del re gli disse: «Signore, scendi prima che il mio bambino muoia».

The king’s officer pleaded with Him, Sir, do come down at once before my little child is dead!

50 G esù gli disse: «Va’, tuo figlio vive». Quell’uomo credette alla parola che Gesù gli aveva detta, e se ne andò.

Jesus answered him, Go in peace; your son will live! And the man put his trust in what Jesus said and started home.

51 E mentre già stava scendendo, i suoi servi gli andarono incontro e gli dissero che suo figlio viveva.

But even as he was on the road going down, his servants met him and reported, saying, Your son lives!

52 A llora egli domandò a che ora avesse cominciato a stare meglio; ed essi gli risposero: «Ieri, all’ora settima, la febbre lo ha lasciato».

So he asked them at what time he had begun to get better. They said, Yesterday during the seventh hour (about one o’clock in the afternoon) the fever left him.

53 C osì il padre riconobbe che quella era l’ora in cui Gesù gli aveva detto: «Tuo figlio vive»; e credette, lui con tutta la sua casa.

Then the father knew that it was at that very hour when Jesus had said to him, Your son will live. And he and his entire household believed (adhered to, trusted in, and relied on Jesus).

54 G esù fece questo secondo segno tornando dalla Giudea in Galilea.

This is the second sign (wonderwork, miracle) that Jesus performed after He had come out of Judea into Galilee.
