1 L à, presso i fiumi di Babilonia, sedevamo e piangevamo ricordandoci di Sion.

By the rivers of Babylon, there we sat down, yes, we wept when we remembered Zion.

2 A i salici delle sponde avevamo appeso le nostre cetre.

On the willow trees in the midst of we hung our harps.

3 L à ci chiedevano delle canzoni quelli che ci avevano deportati, dei canti di gioia quelli che ci opprimevano, dicendo: «Cantateci canzoni di Sion!»

For there they who led us captive required of us a song with words, and our tormentors and they who wasted us required of us mirth, saying, Sing us one of the songs of Zion.

4 C ome potremmo cantare i canti del Signore in terra straniera?

How shall we sing the Lord’s song in a strange land?

5 S e ti dimentico, Gerusalemme, si paralizzi la mia destra;

If I forget you, O Jerusalem, let my right hand forget its skill.

6 r esti la mia lingua attaccata al palato, se io non mi ricordo di te, se non metto Gerusalemme al di sopra di ogni mia gioia.

Let my tongue cleave to the roof of my mouth if I remember you not, if I prefer not Jerusalem above my chief joy!

7 R icòrdati, Signore, dei figli di Edom, che nel giorno di Gerusalemme dicevano: «Spianatela, spianatela, fin dalle fondamenta!»

Remember, O Lord, against the Edomites, that they said in the day of Jerusalem’s fall, Down, down to the ground with her!

8 F iglia di Babilonia, che devi essere distrutta, beato chi ti darà la retribuzione del male che ci hai fatto!

O Daughter of Babylon, who shall be destroyed, happy and blessed shall he be who requites you as you have served us.

9 B eato chi afferrerà i tuoi bambini e li sbatterà contro la roccia!

Happy and blessed shall he be who takes and dashes your little ones against the rock!
