1 L a parola del Signore mi fu rivolta in questi termini:

And the word of the Lord came to me, saying,

2 « Figlio d’uomo, volgi la faccia verso Gerusalemme, rivolgi la parola ai luoghi santi, profetizza contro il paese d’Israele

Son of man, set your face toward Jerusalem and direct your word against the holy places; prophesy against the land of Israel

3 e di’ al paese d’Israele: Così parla il Signore: “Eccomi a te! Io toglierò la mia spada dal fodero e sterminerò in mezzo a te giusti e malvagi.

And say to the land of Israel, Thus says the Lord: Behold, I am against you and will draw forth My sword out of its sheath and will cut off from you both the righteous and the wicked.

4 A ppunto perché voglio sterminare in mezzo a te giusti e malvagi, la mia spada uscirà dal fodero per colpire ogni carne dalla regione meridionale al settentrione;

Because I will cut off from you both the righteous and the wicked, therefore shall My sword go out of its sheath against all flesh from the south to the north,

5 o gni carne saprà che io, il Signore, ho tolto la mia spada dal fodero e non vi sarà più rimessa”.

And all living shall know, understand, and realize that I the Lord have drawn My sword out of its sheath; it shall not be sheathed any more.

6 T u, figlio d’uomo, gemi! con il cuore rotto, nell’amarezza, gemi davanti ai loro occhi.

Sigh therefore, son of man! With breaking heart and with bitterness shall you sigh before their eyes.

7 Q uando ti chiederanno: “Perché gemi?”, rispondi: “Per la notizia che sta per giungere; ogni cuore sarà afflitto, tutte le mani diverranno fiacche, tutti gli spiriti verranno meno, tutte le ginocchia si scioglieranno in acqua. Ecco, la cosa giunge e avverrà!”, dice il Signore, Dio ».

And it shall be that when they say to you, Why do you sigh? that you shall answer, Because of the tidings. When it comes, every heart will melt and all hands will be feeble, and every spirit will faint and all knees will be weak as water. Behold, it comes and it shall be fulfilled, says the Lord God.

Again the word of the Lord came to me, saying,

9 « Figlio d’uomo, profetizza e di’: “Così parla il Signore”. Di’: “La spada, la spada è aguzza; essa è anche affilata:

Son of man, prophesy and say, Thus says the Lord: Say, A sword, a sword is sharpened and also polished;

10 a guzza, per fare un macello; affilata, per scintillare. Dovremmo dunque rallegrarci, ripetendo: ‘Lo scettro di mio figlio disprezza ogni legno’?

It is sharpened that it may make a slaughter, polished that it may flash and glitter like lightning! Shall we then rejoice and make mirth ? But the rod or scepter of My son rejects and views with contempt every tree!

11 I l Signore l’ha data ad affilare, perché la si impugni; la spada è aguzza e affilata per metterla in mano di chi uccide”.

And the sword is given to be polished that it may be put to use; the sword is sharpened and polished to be given into the hand of the slayer.

12 G rida e urla, figlio d’uomo, poiché essa è per il mio popolo, è per tutti i prìncipi d’Israele; essi sono dati in balìa della spada con il mio popolo; perciò percuotiti la coscia!

Cry and wail, son of man, for it is against My people; it is against all the princes of Israel; they are thrown to the sword along with My people, and terrors by reason of the sword are upon My people. Therefore smite your thigh.

13 “ Sì, la prova sarà fatta. Che accadrà, se questo scettro che disprezza tutto non sarà più?”, dice il Signore, Dio.

For this sword has been tested and proved, and what if the rejecting and despising rod or scepter of Judah shall be no more but completely swept away? says the Lord God.

14 T u, figlio d’uomo, profetizza e batti le mani; la spada raddoppi, triplichi i suoi colpi; la spada che fa strage, la spada che uccide anche chi è grande, la spada che li circonda.

Therefore, son of man, prophesy and smite your hands together and let the sword be doubled, yes, trebled in intensity—the sword for those to be overthrown and pierced through; it is the sword of great slaughter which encompasses them.

15 I o ho rivolto la punta della spada contro tutte le loro porte, perché il loro cuore venga meno e cresca il numero dei caduti; sì, essa è fatta per folgorare, è aguzza per il macello.

I have set the threatening and glittering sword against all their gates, that their hearts may melt and their stumblings be multiplied. Ah! It is made like lightning; it is pointed and sharpened for slaughter.

16 S pada, raccogliti! Volgiti a destra, attenta! Volgiti a sinistra, dovunque è diretto il tuo filo!

Turn and cut right or cut left, whichever way your lust for blood and your edge direct you.

17 A nch’io batterò le mani e sfogherò il mio furore! Io, il Signore, ho parlato».

I will also clap My hands, and I will cause My wrath to rest. I the Lord have said it.

18 L a parola del Signore mi fu rivolta in questi termini:

The word of the Lord came to me again, saying,

19 « Tu, figlio d’uomo, fatti due vie per le quali passi la spada del re di Babilonia; partano entrambe dal medesimo paese. Traccia un segnale indicatore all’inizio della strada che porta a una città.

Also, son of man, mark out two ways by which the sword of the king of Babylon may come; both shall come forth from the same land. And make a signpost (a hand); make it at the head of the way to a city.

20 F a’ una strada per la quale la spada vada a Rabba, città dei figli di Ammon, e un’altra perché vada in Giuda, a Gerusalemme, città fortificata.

You shall point out a way for the sword to come to Rabbah of the sons of Ammon and to Judah with Jerusalem, the fortified and inaccessible.

21 I nfatti il re di Babilonia sta sul bivio, all’inizio delle due strade, per tirare presagi: scuote le frecce, consulta gli idoli, esamina il fegato.

For the king of Babylon stands at the parting of the way, at the fork of the two ways, to use divination. He shakes the arrows to and fro, he consults the teraphim (household gods), he looks at the liver.

22 L a sorte, che è nella destra, designa Gerusalemme per collocarvi degli arieti, per aprire la bocca a ordinare il massacro, per alzare la voce in grida di guerra, per collocare gli arieti contro le porte, per elevare bastioni, per costruire torri.

In his right hand is the lot marked for Jerusalem: to set battering rams, to open the mouth calling for slaughter, to lift up the voice with a war cry, to set battering rams against the gates, to cast up siege mounds, and to build siege towers.

23 M a essi non vedono in questo che una divinazione bugiarda; essi, a cui sono stati fatti tanti giuramenti. Ma ora egli si ricorderà della loro iniquità, perché siano presi.

And it shall seem like a lying divination to them who have sworn oaths. But he will remind them of their guilt and iniquity, that they may be caught.

24 P erciò, così parla il Signore, Dio: “Poiché avete fatto ricordare la vostra iniquità mediante le vostre manifeste trasgressioni, al punto che i vostri peccati si manifestano in tutte le vostre azioni, poiché ne rievocate il ricordo, sarete presi dalla sua mano.

Therefore thus says the Lord God: Because you have made your guilt and iniquity to be remembered, in that your transgressions are uncovered, so that in all your doings your sins appear—because, I say, you have come to remembrance, you shall be taken with the hand.

25 T u, empio, condannato alla spada, o principe d’Israele, il cui giorno è giunto al tempo del colmo dell’iniquità,

And you, O dishonored and wicked one, the prince of Israel, whose day will come at the time of your final reckoning and punishment,

26 c osì parla il Signore, Dio: Il turbante sarà tolto, il diadema sarà levato; le cose cambieranno; ciò che è in basso sarà innalzato e ciò che è in alto sarà abbassato.

Thus says the Lord God: Remove the miter or headband and take off the crown; things shall not remain as they have been; the low is to be exalted and the high is to be brought low.

27 R ovina, rovina, rovina. Questo farò di lei; anch’essa non sarà più, finché non venga colui a cui appartiene il giudizio e al quale lo rimetterò”.

I will overthrow, overthrow, overthrow it; this also shall be no more until He comes Whose right it is, and I will give it to Him.

28 « Tu, figlio d’uomo, profetizza e di’: Così parla il Signore, Dio, riguardo ai figli di Ammon e al loro obbrobrio, di’: “La spada, la spada è sguainata; è affilata per massacrare, per divorare, per folgorare.

And you, son of man, prophesy and say, Thus says the Lord God concerning the sons of Ammon and concerning their reproach: Say, A sword, a sword is drawn for the slaughter; it is polished to cause it to devour to the uttermost and to flash like lightning,

29 M entre ci sono per te visioni vane, mentre ci sono per te divinazioni bugiarde, essa ti farà cadere fra i cadaveri degli empi, il cui giorno è giunto al tempo del colmo dell’iniquità.

While they see for you false visions, while they divine lies for you to lay you upon the headless trunks of those who are slain, of the wicked whose day is coming at the time of the final reckoning and punishment.

30 R iponi la spada nel fodero! Io ti giudicherò nel luogo stesso dove fosti creata, nel paese della tua origine;

Return to its sheath. In the place where you were created, in the land of your origin and of your birth, I will judge you.

31 r iverserò su di te la mia indignazione, soffierò contro di te nel fuoco della mia ira e ti darò in mano di uomini brutali, artefici di distruzione.

And I will pour out My indignation upon you; I will blow upon you with the fire of My wrath and will deliver you into the hand of brutish men, skillful to destroy.

32 T u sarai preda del fuoco, il tuo sangue sarà in mezzo al paese; tu non sarai più ricordata, perché io, il Signore ho parlato”».

You shall be for fuel to the fire; your blood shall be in the midst of the land; you shall be no more remembered, for I the Lord have spoken it.
