1 P assando vide un uomo che era cieco fin dalla nascita.

As He passed along, He noticed a man blind from his birth.

2 I suoi discepoli lo interrogarono, dicendo: «Rabbì, chi ha peccato, lui o i suoi genitori, perché sia nato cieco?»

His disciples asked Him, Rabbi, who sinned, this man or his parents, that he should be born blind?

3 G esù rispose: «Né lui ha peccato, né i suoi genitori; ma è così affinché le opere di Dio siano manifestate in lui.

Jesus answered, It was not that this man or his parents sinned, but he was born blind in order that the workings of God should be manifested (displayed and illustrated) in him.

4 B isogna che io compia le opere di colui che mi ha mandato mentre è giorno; la notte viene in cui nessuno può operare.

We must work the works of Him Who sent Me and be busy with His business while it is daylight; night is coming on, when no man can work.

5 M entre sono nel mondo, io sono la luce del mondo».

As long as I am in the world, I am the world’s Light.

6 D etto questo, sputò in terra, fece del fango con la saliva, gli spalmò il fango sugli occhi

When He had said this, He spat on the ground and made clay (mud) with His saliva, and He spread it on the man’s eyes.

7 e gli disse: «Va’, làvati nella vasca di Siloe» (che significa «mandato»). Egli dunque andò, si lavò e tornò che ci vedeva.

And He said to him, Go, wash in the Pool of Siloam—which means Sent. So he went and washed, and came back seeing.

8 P erciò i vicini e quelli che l’avevano visto prima, perché era mendicante, dicevano: «Non è questo colui che stava seduto a chiedere l’elemosina?»

When the neighbors and those who used to know him by sight as a beggar saw him, they said, Is not this the man who used to sit and beg?

9 A lcuni dicevano: «È lui». Altri dicevano: «No, ma gli somiglia». Egli diceva: «Sono io».

Some said, It is he. Others said, No, but he looks very much like him. But he said, Yes, I am the man.

10 A llora essi gli domandarono: «Com’è che ti sono stati aperti gli occhi?»

So they said to him, How were your eyes opened?

11 E gli rispose: «Quell’uomo che si chiama Gesù ha fatto del fango, me ne ha spalmato gli occhi e mi ha detto: “Va’ a Siloe e làvati”. Io quindi sono andato, mi son lavato e ho recuperato la vista».

He replied, The Man called Jesus made mud and smeared it on my eyes and said to me, Go to Siloam and wash. So I went and washed, and I obtained my sight!

12 E d essi gli dissero: «Dov’è costui?» Egli rispose: «Non so».

They asked him, Where is He? He said, I do not know.

13 C ondussero dai farisei colui che era stato cieco.

Then they conducted to the Pharisees the man who had formerly been blind.

14 O r era in giorno di sabato che Gesù aveva fatto il fango e gli aveva aperto gli occhi.

Now it was on the Sabbath day that Jesus mixed the mud and opened the man’s eyes.

15 I farisei dunque gli domandarono di nuovo come egli avesse recuperato la vista. Ed egli disse loro: «Mi ha messo del fango sugli occhi, mi sono lavato e ci vedo».

So now again the Pharisees asked him how he received his sight. And he said to them, He smeared mud on my eyes, and I washed, and now I see.

16 P erciò alcuni dei farisei dicevano: «Quest’uomo non è da Dio perché non osserva il sabato». Ma altri dicevano: «Come può un uomo peccatore compiere tali segni?» E vi era disaccordo tra di loro.

Then some of the Pharisees said, This Man is not from God, because He does not observe the Sabbath. But others said, How can a man who is a sinner (a bad man) do such signs and miracles? So there was a difference of opinion among them.

17 E ssi dunque dissero di nuovo al cieco: «Tu, che dici di lui, poiché ti ha aperto gli occhi?» Egli rispose: «È un profeta».

Accordingly they said to the blind man again, What do you say about Him, seeing that He opened your eyes? And he said, He is a prophet!

18 I Giudei però non credettero che lui fosse stato cieco e avesse recuperato la vista, finché non ebbero chiamato i genitori di colui che aveva recuperato la vista

However, the Jews did not believe that he had been blind and that he had received his sight until they called (summoned) the parents of the man.

19 e li ebbero interrogati così: «È questo vostro figlio che dite essere nato cieco? Com’è dunque che ora ci vede?»

They asked them, Is this your son, whom you reported as having been born blind? How then does he see now?

20 I suoi genitori risposero: «Sappiamo che questo è nostro figlio e che è nato cieco;

His parents answered, We know that this is our son, and that he was born blind.

21 m a come ora ci veda non lo sappiamo, né sappiamo chi gli abbia aperto gli occhi; domandatelo a lui; egli è adulto, parlerà lui di sé».

But as to how he can now see, we do not know; or who has opened his eyes, we do not know. He is of age. Ask him; let him speak for himself and give his own account of it.

22 Q uesto dissero i suoi genitori perché avevano paura dei Giudei; infatti i Giudei avevano già stabilito che se uno avesse riconosciuto Gesù come Cristo, sarebbe stato espulso dalla sinagoga.

His parents said this because they feared the Jews; for the Jews had already agreed that if anyone should acknowledge Jesus to be the Christ, he should be expelled and excluded from the synagogue.

23 P er questo i suoi genitori dissero: «Egli è adulto, domandatelo a lui».

On that account his parents said, He is of age; ask him.

24 E ssi dunque chiamarono per la seconda volta l’uomo che era stato cieco, e gli dissero: «Da’ gloria a Dio! Noi sappiamo che quest’uomo è un peccatore».

So the second time they summoned the man who had been born blind, and said to him, Now give God the glory (praise). This Fellow we know is only a sinner (a wicked person).

25 E gli dunque rispose: «Se egli sia un peccatore, non lo so; una cosa so: che ero cieco e ora ci vedo».

Then he answered, I do not know whether He is a sinner and wicked or not. But one thing I do know, that whereas I was blind before, now I see.

26 E ssi allora gli dissero: «Che cosa ti ha fatto? Come ti ha aperto gli occhi?»

So they said to him, What did He do to you? How did He open your eyes?

27 E gli rispose loro: «Ve l’ho già detto e voi non avete ascoltato. Perché volete udirlo di nuovo? Volete forse diventare suoi discepoli anche voi?»

He answered, I already told you and you would not listen. Why do you want to hear it again? Can it be that you wish to become His disciples also?

28 E ssi lo insultarono e dissero: «Tu sei discepolo di costui! Noi siamo discepoli di Mosè.

And they stormed at him and retorted, You are His disciple yourself, but we are the disciples of Moses.

29 N oi sappiamo che a Mosè Dio ha parlato; ma in quanto a costui, non sappiamo di dove sia».

We know for certain that God spoke with Moses, but as for this Fellow, we know nothing about where He hails from.

30 L ’uomo rispose loro: «Questo poi è strano, che voi non sappiate di dove sia; eppure mi ha aperto gli occhi!

The man replied, Well, this is astonishing! Here a Man has opened my eyes, and yet you do not know where He comes from.

31 S i sa che Dio non esaudisce i peccatori; ma se uno è pio e fa la volontà di Dio, egli lo esaudisce.

We know that God does not listen to sinners; but if anyone is God-fearing and a worshiper of Him and does His will, He listens to him.

32 D a che mondo è mondo non si è mai udito che uno abbia aperto gli occhi a uno nato cieco.

Since the beginning of time it has never been heard that anyone opened the eyes of a man born blind.

33 S e quest’uomo non fosse da Dio, non potrebbe fare nulla».

If this Man were not from God, He would not be able to do anything like this.

34 E ssi gli risposero: «Tu sei tutto quanto nato nel peccato e insegni a noi?» E lo cacciarono fuori.

They retorted, You were wholly born in sin; and do you teach us? So they cast him out.

35 G esù udì che lo avevano cacciato fuori; e, trovatolo, disse: «Credi nel Figlio dell’uomo? »

Jesus heard that they had put him out, and meeting him He said, Do you believe in and adhere to the Son of Man or the Son of God ?

36 Q uegli rispose: «Chi è, Signore, perché io creda in lui?»

He answered, Who is He, Sir? Tell me, that I may believe in and adhere to Him.

37 G esù gli disse: «Tu l’hai già visto; è colui che ti sta parlando».

Jesus said to him, You have seen Him; He is talking to you right now.

38 E gli disse: «Signore, io credo». E l’adorò.

He called out, Lord, I believe! And he worshiped Him.

39 G esù disse: «Io sono venuto in questo mondo per fare un giudizio, affinché quelli che non vedono vedano, e quelli che vedono diventino ciechi».

Then Jesus said, I came into this world for judgment '> separation between those who believe on Me and those who reject Me], to make the sightless see and to make those who see become blind.

40 A lcuni farisei, che erano con lui, udirono queste cose e gli dissero: «Siamo ciechi anche noi?»

Some Pharisees who were near, hearing this remark, said to Him, Are we also blind?

41 G esù rispose loro: «Se foste ciechi, non avreste alcun peccato; ma siccome dite: “Noi vediamo”, il vostro peccato rimane.

Jesus said to them, If you were blind, you would have no sin; but because you now claim to have sight, your sin remains.
