1 P oi il quinto angelo suonò la tromba, e io vidi un astro che era caduto dal cielo sulla terra; e a lui fu data la chiave del pozzo dell’abisso.

Then the fifth angel blew trumpet, and I saw a star that had fallen from the sky to the earth; and to the angel was given the key of the shaft of the Abyss (the bottomless pit).

2 E gli aprì il pozzo dell’abisso e ne salì un fumo, come quello di una grande fornace; il sole e l’aria furono oscurati dal fumo del pozzo.

He opened the long shaft of the Abyss (the bottomless pit), and smoke like the smoke of a huge furnace puffed out of the long shaft, so that the sun and the atmosphere were darkened by the smoke from the long shaft.

3 D al fumo uscirono sulla terra delle cavallette a cui fu dato un potere simile a quello degli scorpioni della terra.

Then out of the smoke locusts came forth on the earth, and such power was granted them as the power the earth’s scorpions have.

4 E fu detto loro di non danneggiare l’erba della terra, né alcuna verdura, né alcun albero, ma solo gli uomini che non avessero il sigillo di Dio sulla fronte.

They were told not to injure the herbage of the earth nor any green thing nor any tree, but only such human beings as do not have the seal (mark) of God on their foreheads.

5 F u loro concesso, non di ucciderli, ma di tormentarli per cinque mesi; e il tormento che procuravano era simile a quello prodotto dallo scorpione quando punge un uomo.

They were not permitted to kill them, but to torment (distress, vex) them for five months; and the pain caused them was like the torture of a scorpion when it stings a person.

6 I n quei giorni gli uomini cercheranno la morte, ma non la troveranno; brameranno morire, ma la morte fuggirà da loro.

And in those days people will seek death and will not find it; and they will yearn to die, but death evades and flees from them.

7 L ’aspetto delle cavallette era simile a cavalli pronti per la guerra. Sulla testa avevano come delle corone d’oro e la loro faccia era come viso d’uomo.

The locusts resembled horses equipped for battle. On their heads was something like golden crowns. Their faces resembled the faces of people.

8 A vevano dei capelli come capelli di donne e i loro denti erano come denti di leoni.

They had hair like the hair of women, and their teeth were like lions’ teeth.

9 I l loro torace era simile a una corazza di ferro e il rumore delle loro ali era come quello di carri tirati da molti cavalli che corrono alla battaglia.

Their breastplates (scales) resembled breastplates made of iron, and the noise made by their wings was like the roar of a vast number of horse-drawn chariots going at full speed into battle.

10 A vevano code e pungiglioni come quelli degli scorpioni, e nelle code stava il loro potere di danneggiare gli uomini per cinque mesi.

They have tails like scorpions, and they have stings, and in their tails lies their ability to hurt men for five months.

11 I l loro re era l’angelo dell’abisso, il cui nome in ebraico è Abaddon e in greco Apollion.

Over them as king they have the angel of the Abyss (of the bottomless pit). In Hebrew his name is Abaddon, but in Greek he is called Apollyon.

12 I l primo «guai» è passato; ecco, vengono ancora due «guai» dopo queste cose.

The first woe (calamity) has passed; behold, two others are yet to follow.

13 P oi il sesto angelo suonò la tromba, e udii una voce dai {quattro} corni dell’altare d’oro che era davanti a Dio.

Then the sixth angel blew trumpet, and from the four horns of the golden altar which stands before God I heard a solitary voice,

14 L a voce diceva al sesto angelo che aveva la tromba: «Sciogli i quattro angeli che sono legati sul gran fiume Eufrate».

Saying to the sixth angel who had the trumpet, Liberate the four angels who are bound at the great river Euphrates.

15 E furono sciolti i quattro angeli che erano stati preparati per quell’ora, quel giorno, quel mese e quell’anno, per uccidere la terza parte degli uomini.

So the four angels who had been in readiness for that hour in the appointed day, month, and year were liberated to destroy a third of mankind.

16 I l numero dei soldati a cavallo era di duecento milioni e io udii il loro numero.

The number of their troops of cavalry was twice ten thousand times ten thousand (200, 000, 000); I heard what their number was.

17 E d ecco come mi apparvero nella visione i cavalli e quelli che li cavalcavano: avevano delle corazze color di fuoco, di giacinto e di zolfo; i cavalli avevano delle teste simili a quelle dei leoni e dalle loro bocche usciva fuoco, fumo e zolfo.

And in vision the horses and their riders appeared to me like this: the riders wore breastplates the color of fiery red and sapphire blue and sulphur (brimstone) yellow. The heads of the horses looked like lions’ heads, and from their mouths there poured fire and smoke and sulphur (brimstone).

18 U n terzo degli uomini fu ucciso da questi tre flagelli: dal fuoco, dal fumo e dallo zolfo che uscivano dalle bocche dei cavalli.

A third of mankind was killed by these three plagues—by the fire and the smoke and the sulphur (brimstone) that poured from the mouths of the horses.

19 I l potere dei cavalli era nella loro bocca e nelle loro code; perché le loro code erano simili a serpenti e avevano delle teste, e con esse ferivano.

For the power of the horses to do harm is in their mouths and also in their tails. Their tails are like serpents, for they have heads, and it is by means of them that they wound people.

20 I l resto degli uomini che non furono uccisi da questi flagelli non si ravvidero dalle opere delle loro mani; non cessarono di adorare i demòni e gli idoli d’oro, d’argento, di bronzo, di pietra e di legno, che non possono né vedere, né udire, né camminare.

And the rest of humanity who were not killed by these plagues even then did not repent of the works of their hands, so as to cease paying homage to the demons and idols of gold and silver and bronze and stone and wood, which can neither see nor hear nor move.

21 N on si ravvidero neppure dai loro omicidi, né dalle loro magie, né dalla loro fornicazione, né dai loro furti.

And they did not repent of their murders or their practice of magic (sorceries) or their sexual vice or their thefts.
