1 Q uando Gesù ebbe finito questi discorsi, partì dalla Galilea e se ne andò nei territori della Giudea che sono oltre il Giordano.

Now when Jesus had finished saying these things, He left Galilee and went into the part of Judea that is beyond the Jordan;

2 U na grande folla lo seguì, e là li guarì.

And great throngs accompanied Him, and He cured them there.

3 D ei farisei gli si avvicinarono per metterlo alla prova, dicendo: «È lecito mandare via la propria moglie per un motivo qualsiasi?»

And Pharisees came to Him and put Him to the test by asking, Is it lawful and right to dismiss and repudiate and divorce one’s wife for any and every cause?

4 E d egli rispose: «Non avete letto che il Creatore, da principio, li creò maschio e femmina e disse:

He replied, Have you never read that He Who made them from the beginning made them male and female,

5 “ Perciò l’uomo lascerà il padre e la madre, e si unirà a sua moglie, e i due saranno una sola carne” ?

And said, For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and shall be united firmly (joined inseparably) to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh?

6 C osì non sono più due, ma una sola carne; quello dunque che Dio ha unito, l’uomo non lo separi».

So they are no longer two, but one flesh. What therefore God has joined together, let not man put asunder (separate).

7 E ssi gli dissero: «Perché dunque Mosè comandò di darle un atto di ripudio e di mandarla via ?»

They said to Him, Why then did Moses command to give a certificate of divorce and thus to dismiss and repudiate a wife?

8 E gli disse loro: «Fu per la durezza dei vostri cuori che Mosè vi permise di mandare via le vostre mogli; ma da principio non era così.

He said to them, Because of the hardness (stubbornness and perversity) of your hearts Moses permitted you to dismiss and repudiate and divorce your wives; but from the beginning it has not been so.

9 M a io vi dico che chiunque manda via sua moglie, quando non sia per motivo di fornicazione, e ne sposa un’altra, commette adulterio ».

I say to you: whoever dismisses (repudiates, divorces) his wife, except for unchastity, and marries another commits adultery, and he who marries a divorced woman commits adultery.

10 I {suoi} discepoli gli dissero: «Se tale è la condizione dell’uomo rispetto alla donna, non conviene sposarsi».

The disciples said to Him, If the case of a man with his wife is like this, it is neither profitable nor advisable to marry.

11 M a egli rispose loro: «Non tutti sono capaci di mettere in pratica questa parola, ma soltanto quelli ai quali è dato.

But He said to them, Not all men can accept this saying, but it is for those to whom it has been given.

12 P oiché vi sono degli eunuchi che sono tali dalla nascita; vi sono degli eunuchi i quali sono stati fatti tali dagli uomini, e vi sono degli eunuchi i quali si sono fatti eunuchi da sé a motivo del regno dei cieli. Chi può capire, capisca». Gesù benedice i bambini

For there are eunuchs who have been born incapable of marriage; and there are eunuchs who have been made so by men; and there are eunuchs who have made themselves incapable of marriage for the sake of the kingdom of heaven. Let him who is able to accept this accept it.

13 A llora gli furono presentati dei bambini perché imponesse loro le mani e pregasse; ma i discepoli li sgridavano.

Then little children were brought to Jesus, that He might put His hands on them and pray; but the disciples rebuked those who brought them.

14 M a Gesù disse: «Lasciate stare i bambini e non impedite loro di venire da me, perché il regno dei cieli è di chi è come loro».

But He said, Leave the children alone! Allow the little ones to come to Me, and do not forbid or restrain or hinder them, for of such is the kingdom of heaven composed.

15 E , imposte loro le mani, se ne andò via di là. Il giovane ricco

And He put His hands upon them, and then went on His way.

16 E d ecco, un tale gli si avvicinò e disse: «Maestro, che devo fare di buono per avere la vita eterna?»

And behold, there came a man up to Him, saying, Teacher, what excellent and perfectly and essentially good deed must I do to possess eternal life?

17 G esù gli rispose: «Perché m’interroghi intorno a ciò che è buono? Uno solo è il buono. Ma se vuoi entrare nella vita, osserva i comandamenti».

And He said to him, Why do you ask Me about the perfectly and essentially good? There is only One Who is good —God. If you would enter into the Life, you must continually keep the commandments.

18 « Quali?» gli chiese. E Gesù rispose: «Non uccidere, non commettere adulterio, non rubare, non testimoniare il falso.

He said to Him, What sort of commandments? And Jesus answered, You shall not kill, You shall not commit adultery, You shall not steal, You shall not bear false witness,

19 O nora tuo padre e tua madre, e ama il tuo prossimo come te stesso ».

Honor your father and your mother, and, You shall love your neighbor as yourself.

20 E il giovane a lui: «Tutte queste cose le ho osservate; che mi manca ancora?»

The young man said, I have observed all these from my youth; what still do I lack?

21 G esù gli disse: «Se vuoi essere perfetto, va’, vendi ciò che hai e dàllo ai poveri, e avrai un tesoro nei cieli; poi, vieni e seguimi».

Jesus answered him, If you would be perfect '> have that spiritual maturity which accompanies self-sacrificing character], go and sell what you have and give to the poor, and you will have riches in heaven; and come, be My disciple.

22 M a il giovane, udita questa parola, se ne andò rattristato, perché aveva molti beni.

But when the young man heard this, he went away sad (grieved and in much distress), for he had great possessions.

23 E Gesù disse ai suoi discepoli: «Io vi dico in verità che difficilmente un ricco entrerà nel regno dei cieli.

And Jesus said to His disciples, Truly I say to you, it will be difficult for a rich man to get into the kingdom of heaven.

24 E ripeto: è più facile per un cammello passare attraverso la cruna di un ago, che per un ricco entrare nel regno di Dio».

Again I tell you, it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to go into the kingdom of heaven.

25 I discepoli, udito questo, furono sbigottiti e dicevano: «Chi dunque può essere salvato?»

When the disciples heard this, they were utterly puzzled (astonished, bewildered), saying, Who then can be saved '> from eternal death]?

26 G esù, fissando lo sguardo su di loro, disse: «Agli uomini questo è impossibile; ma a Dio ogni cosa è possibile».

But Jesus looked at them and said, With men this is impossible, but all things are possible with God.

27 A llora Pietro, replicando, gli disse: «Ecco, noi abbiamo lasciato ogni cosa e ti abbiamo seguito; che ne avremo dunque?»

Then Peter answered Him, saying, Behold, we have left all and have become Your disciples. What then shall we receive?

28 E Gesù disse loro: «Io vi dico in verità che nella nuova creazione, quando il Figlio dell’uomo sarà seduto sul trono della sua gloria, anche voi che mi avete seguito sarete seduti su dodici troni a giudicare le dodici tribù d’Israele.

Jesus said to them, Truly I say to you, in the new age '> Messianic rebirth of the world], when the Son of Man shall sit down on the throne of His glory, you who have followed Me will also sit on twelve thrones and judge the twelve tribes of Israel.

29 E chiunque avrà lasciato case, o fratelli, o sorelle, o padre, o madre, o figli, o campi a causa del mio nome, ne riceverà cento volte tanto ed erediterà la vita eterna.

And anyone and everyone who has left houses or brothers or sisters or father or mother or children or lands for My name’s sake will receive many times more and will inherit eternal life.

30 M a molti primi saranno ultimi e gli ultimi, primi.

But many who are first will be last, and many who are last will be first.
