O Lord, remember what has come upon us! Look down and see our reproach (our national disgrace)!

2 L a nostra eredità è passata agli stranieri, le nostre case agli estranei.

Our inheritance has fallen over to strangers, our houses to foreigners.

3 N oi siamo diventati orfani, senza padre, le nostre madri sono come vedove.

We have become orphans and fatherless; our mothers are like widows.

4 N oi beviamo la nostra acqua dietro pagamento, la nostra legna noi la compriamo.

We have had to pay money to drink the water that belongs to us; our wood is sold to us.

5 C on il giogo sul collo, siamo inseguiti; siamo spossati, non abbiamo riposo.

Our pursuers are upon our necks; we are weary and are allowed no rest.

6 A bbiamo teso la mano verso l’Egitto e verso l’Assiria, per saziarci di pane.

We have given the hand to the Egyptians and to the Assyrians to get food to satisfy.

7 I nostri padri hanno peccato e non sono più; noi portiamo la pena delle loro iniquità.

Our fathers sinned and are no more, and we have borne their iniquities.

8 D egli schiavi dominano su di noi e non c’è chi ci liberi dalle loro mani.

Servants and slaves rule over us; there is none to deliver us out of their hands.

9 N oi raccogliamo il nostro pane a rischio della nostra vita, affrontando la spada del deserto.

We get our bread at the peril of our lives because of the sword of the wilderness.

10 L a nostra pelle brucia come un forno per l’arsura della fame.

Our skin glows and is parched as from an oven because of the burning heat of famine.

11 E ssi hanno disonorato le donne a Sion, le vergini delle città di Giuda.

They ravished the women in Zion, the virgins in the cities of Judah.

12 I capi sono stati impiccati dalle loro mani, la persona anziana non è stata rispettata.

They hung princes by their hands; the persons of elders were not respected.

13 I giovani hanno portato le macine, i ragazzini hanno vacillato sotto il carico della legna.

Young men carried millstones, and boys fell under wood.

14 I vecchi hanno abbandonato la porta della città, i giovani la musica dei loro strumenti.

The elders have ceased from the city’s gate, the young men from their music.

15 L a gioia è scomparsa dai nostri cuori, le nostre danze sono mutate in lutto.

Ceased is the joy of our hearts; our dancing has turned into mourning.

16 L a corona ci è caduta dal capo; guai a noi, perché abbiamo peccato!

The crown has fallen from our head! Woe to us, for we have sinned!

17 P er questo langue il nostro cuore, per questo si oscurano i nostri occhi:

Because of this our hearts are faint and sick; because of these things our eyes are dim and see darkly.

18 p erché il monte di Sion è desolato e vi passeggiano le volpi.

As for Mount Zion, which lies desolate, the jackals prowl over it!

19 M a tu, Signore, regni per sempre; il tuo trono dura d’età in età.

But You, O Lord, remain and reign forever; Your throne endures from generation to generations.

20 P erché dovresti dimenticarci per sempre e abbandonarci per lungo tempo?

Why do You forget us forever? Why do You forsake us so long?

21 F acci tornare a te, o Signore, e noi torneremo! Ridonaci dei giorni come quelli di un tempo!

Turn us to Yourself, O Lord, and we shall be turned and restored! Renew our days as of old!—

22 C i hai forse rigettati davvero? Sei tu adirato fortemente contro di noi?

Or have You utterly rejected us? Or are You exceedingly angry with us ?
