1 E staba entonces enfermo uno llamado Lázaro, de Betania, la aldea de María y de Marta su hermana.

Now a certain man named Lazarus was ill. He was of Bethany, the village where Mary and her sister Martha lived.

2 ( María, cuyo hermano Lázaro estaba enfermo, fue la que ungió al Señor con perfume, y le enjugó los pies con sus cabellos.)

This Mary was the one who anointed the Lord with perfume and wiped His feet with her hair. It was her brother Lazarus who was sick.

3 E nviaron, pues, las hermanas para decir a Jesús: Señor, mira, el que amas está enfermo.

So the sisters sent to Him, saying, Lord, he whom You love is sick.

4 O yéndolo Jesús, dijo: Esta enfermedad no es para muerte, sino para la gloria de Dios, para que el Hijo de Dios sea glorificado por medio de ella.

When Jesus received the message, He said, This sickness is not to end in death; but it is to honor God and to promote His glory, that the Son of God may be glorified through (by) it.

5 Y amaba Jesús a Marta, a su hermana y a Lázaro.

Now Jesus loved Martha and her sister and Lazarus.

6 C uando oyó, pues, que estaba enfermo, se quedó dos días más en el lugar donde estaba.

Therefore when He heard that Lazarus was sick, He still stayed two days longer in the same place where He was.

7 L uego, después de esto, dijo a los discípulos: Vamos a Judea otra vez.

Then after that interval He said to His disciples, Let us go back again to Judea.

8 L e dijeron los discípulos: Rabí, ahora procuraban los judíos apedrearte, ¿y otra vez vas allá?

The disciples said to Him, Rabbi, the Jews only recently were intending and trying to stone You, and are You going back there again?

9 R espondió Jesús: ¿No son doce las horas del día? El que anda de día, no tropieza, porque ve la luz de este mundo;

Jesus answered, Are there not twelve hours in the day? Anyone who walks about in the daytime does not stumble, because he sees the light of this world.

10 p ero el que anda de noche, tropieza, porque no hay luz en él.

But if anyone walks about in the night, he does stumble, because there is no light in him.

11 D icho esto, les dijo después: Nuestro amigo Lázaro se ha quedado dormido; mas voy para despertarle.

He said these things, and then added, Our friend Lazarus is at rest and sleeping; but I am going there that I may awaken him out of his sleep.

12 D ijeron entonces sus discípulos: Señor, si está dormido, sanará.

The disciples answered, Lord, if he is sleeping, he will recover.

13 P ero Jesús se había referido a la muerte de Lázaro; y a ellos les pareció que hablaba del reposar del sueño.

However, Jesus had spoken of his death, but they thought that He referred to falling into a refreshing and natural sleep.

14 E ntonces Jesús les dijo abiertamente: Lázaro ha muerto;

So then Jesus told them plainly, Lazarus is dead,

15 y me alegro por vosotros, de no haber estado allí, para que creáis; pero vayamos hasta él.

And for your sake I am glad that I was not there; it will help you to believe (to trust and rely on Me). However, let us go to him.

16 D ijo entonces Tomás, llamado Dídimo, a sus condiscípulos: Vamos también nosotros, para que muramos con él. Jesucristo, la resurrección y la vida

Then Thomas, who was called the Twin, said to his fellow disciples, Let us go too, that we may die along with Him.

17 V ino, pues, Jesús, y halló que hacía ya cuatro días que Lázaro estaba en el sepulcro.

So when Jesus arrived, He found that he had already been in the tomb four days.

18 B etania estaba cerca de Jerusalén, como a quince estadios;

Bethany was near Jerusalem, only about two miles away,

19 y muchos de los judíos habían venido a Marta y a María, para consolarlas por su hermano.

And a considerable number of the Jews had gone out to see Martha and Mary to console them concerning their brother.

20 E ntonces Marta, cuando oyó que Jesús venía, salió a su encuentro, mientras María se quedaba sentada en casa.

When Martha heard that Jesus was coming, she went to meet Him, while Mary remained sitting in the house.

21 Y Marta dijo a Jesús: Señor, si hubieses estado aquí, mi hermano no habría muerto.

Martha then said to Jesus, Master, if You had been here, my brother would not have died.

22 M as también sé ahora que todo lo que pidas a Dios, Dios te lo dará.

And even now I know that whatever You ask from God, He will grant it to You.

23 J esús le dijo: Tu hermano resucitará.

Jesus said to her, Your brother shall rise again.

24 M arta le dijo: Ya sé que resucitará en la resurrección, en el último día.

Martha replied, I know that he will rise again in the resurrection at the last day.

25 L e dijo Jesús: Yo soy la resurrección y la vida; el que cree en mí, aunque haya muerto, vivirá.

Jesus said to her, I am the Resurrection and the Life. Whoever believes in (adheres to, trusts in, and relies on) Me, although he may die, yet he shall live;

26 Y todo aquel que vive y cree en mí, no morirá eternamente. ¿Crees esto?

And whoever continues to live and believes in (has faith in, cleaves to, and relies on) Me shall never die at all. Do you believe this?

27 L e dijo: Sí, Señor; yo he creído que tú eres el Cristo, el Hijo de Dios, que has venido al mundo. Jesús llora ante la tumba de Lázaro

She said to Him, Yes, Lord, I have believed that You are the Christ (the Messiah, the Anointed One), the Son of God, Who was to come into the world.

28 H abiendo dicho esto, fue y llamó a María su hermana, diciéndole en secreto: El Maestro está aquí y te llama.

After she had said this, she went back and called her sister Mary, privately whispering to her, The Teacher is close at hand and is asking for you.

29 E lla, en cuanto lo oyó, se levantó de prisa y vino a él.

When she heard this, she sprang up quickly and went to Him.

30 J esús todavía no había entrado en la aldea, sino que estaba en el lugar donde Marta había salido a recibirle.

Now Jesus had not yet entered the village, but was still at the same spot where Martha had met Him.

31 E ntonces los judíos que estaban en casa con ella y la consolaban, al ver que María se había levantado de prisa y había salido, la siguieron, diciendo: Va al sepulcro a llorar allí.

When the Jews who were sitting with her in the house and consoling her saw how hastily Mary had arisen and gone out, they followed her, supposing that she was going to the tomb to pour out her grief there.

32 M aría, cuando llegó adonde estaba Jesús, al verle, se arrojó a sus pies, diciéndole: Señor, si hubieses estado aquí, no habría muerto mi hermano.

When Mary came to the place where Jesus was and saw Him, she dropped down at His feet, saying to Him, Lord, if You had been here, my brother would not have died.

33 J esús entonces, al verla llorando, y a los judíos que la acompañaban, también llorando, se estremeció interiormente y se conmovió,

When Jesus saw her sobbing, and the Jews who came with her sobbing, He was deeply moved in spirit and troubled.

34 y dijo: ¿Dónde le habéis puesto? Le dijeron: Señor, ven y ve.

And He said, Where have you laid him? They said to Him, Lord, come and see.

35 J esús lloró.

Jesus wept.

36 D ijeron entonces los judíos: Mirad cómo le amaba.

The Jews said, See how He loved him!

37 Y algunos de ellos dijeron: ¿No podía éste, que abrió los ojos del ciego, haber hecho también que Lázaro no muriera? Resurrección de Lázaro

But some of them said, Could not He Who opened a blind man’s eyes have prevented this man from dying?

38 J esús, profundamente conmovido otra vez, vino al sepulcro. Era una cueva, y tenía una piedra puesta encima.

Now Jesus, again sighing repeatedly and deeply disquieted, approached the tomb. It was a cave (a hole in the rock), and a boulder lay against it.

39 D ijo Jesús: Quitad la piedra. Marta, la hermana del que había muerto, le dijo: Señor, hiede ya, porque es de cuatro días.

Jesus said, Take away the stone. Martha, the sister of the dead man, exclaimed, But Lord, by this time he throws off an offensive odor, for he has been dead four days!

40 J esús le dijo: ¿No te he dicho que si crees, verás la gloria de Dios?

Jesus said to her, Did I not tell you and promise you that if you would believe and rely on Me, you would see the glory of God?

41 Q uitaron, pues, la piedra de donde había sido puesto el muerto. Y Jesús, alzando los ojos a lo alto, dijo: Padre, gracias te doy por haberme oído.

So they took away the stone. And Jesus lifted up His eyes and said, Father, I thank You that You have heard Me.

42 Y o sabía que siempre me oyes; pero lo dije por causa de la multitud que está alrededor, para que crean que tú me has enviado.

Yes, I know You always hear and listen to Me, but I have said this on account of and for the benefit of the people standing around, so that they may believe that You did send Me.

43 Y habiendo dicho esto, clamó a gran voz: ¡Lázaro, sal fuera!

When He had said this, He shouted with a loud voice, Lazarus, come out!

44 Y el que había muerto salió, atadas las manos y los pies con vendas, y el rostro envuelto en un sudario. Jesús les dijo: Desatadle, y dejadle ir. El complot para matar a Jesús

And out walked the man who had been dead, his hands and feet wrapped in burial cloths (linen strips), and with a napkin bound around his face. Jesus said to them, Free him of the burial wrappings and let him go.

45 E ntonces muchos de los judíos que habían venido para acompañar a María, y vieron lo que hizo Jesús, creyeron en él.

Upon seeing what Jesus had done, many of the Jews who had come with Mary believed in Him.

46 P ero algunos de ellos fueron a los fariseos y les dijeron lo que Jesús había hecho.

But some of them went back to the Pharisees and told them what Jesus had done.

47 E ntonces los principales sacerdotes y los fariseos reunieron el sanedrín, y dijeron: ¿Qué hacemos? Porque este hombre hace muchas señales.

So the chief priests and Pharisees called a meeting of the council (the Sanhedrin) and said, What are we to do? For this Man performs many signs (evidences, miracles).

48 S i le dejamos así, todos creerán en él; y vendrán los romanos, y destruirán nuestro lugar santo y nuestra nación.

If we let Him alone to go on like this, everyone will believe in Him and adhere to Him, and the Romans will come and suppress and destroy and take away our place and our nation '> our temple and city and our civil organization].

49 E ntonces Caifás, uno de ellos, que era sumo sacerdote aquel año, les dijo: Vosotros no sabéis nada;

But one of them, Caiaphas, who was the high priest that year, declared, You know nothing at all!

50 n i os dais cuenta de que nos conviene que un solo hombre muera por el pueblo, y no que toda la nación perezca.

Nor do you understand or reason out that it is expedient and better for your own welfare that one man should die on behalf of the people than that the whole nation should perish (be destroyed, ruined).

51 E sto no lo dijo por sí mismo, sino que como era el sumo sacerdote aquel año, profetizó que Jesús iba a morir por la nación;

Now he did not say this simply of his own accord; but being the high priest that year, he prophesied that Jesus was to die for the nation,

52 y no solamente por la nación, sino también para congregar en uno a los hijos de Dios que estaban dispersos.

And not only for the nation but also for the purpose of uniting into one body the children of God who have been scattered far and wide.

53 A sí que, desde aquel día acordaron matarle.

So from that day on they took counsel and plotted together how they might put Him to death.

54 P or tanto, Jesús ya no andaba abiertamente entre los judíos, sino que se alejó de allí a la región contigua al desierto, a una ciudad llamada Efraín; y se quedó allí con sus discípulos.

For that reason Jesus no longer appeared publicly among the Jews, but left there and retired to the district that borders on the wilderness (the desert), to a village called Ephraim, and there He stayed with the disciples.

55 Y estaba cerca la pascua de los judíos; y muchos subieron de aquella región a Jerusalén antes de la pascua, para purificarse.

Now the Jewish Passover was at hand, and many from the country went up to Jerusalem in order that they might purify and consecrate themselves before the Passover.

56 Y buscaban a Jesús, y estando ellos en el templo, se preguntaban unos a otros: ¿Qué os parece? ¿No vendrá a la fiesta?

So they kept looking for Jesus and questioned among themselves as they were standing about in the temple '> area], What do you think? Will He not come to the Feast at all?

57 Y los principales sacerdotes y los fariseos habían dado orden de que si alguno supiese dónde estaba, lo denunciara, para que le prendiesen.

Now the chief priests and Pharisees had given orders that if anyone knew where He was, he should report it to them, so that they might arrest Him.
