1 R oboam fue a Siquem, porque todo Israel había venido a Siquem para hacerle rey.

Rehoboam went to Shechem, for all Israel had come to Shechem to make him king.

2 Y aconteció que cuando lo oyó Jeroboam hijo de Nebat, que aún estaba en Egipto, adonde había huido de delante del rey Salomón, y habitaba en Egipto,

And when Jeroboam son of Nebat heard of it—for he still dwelt in Egypt, where he had fled from King Solomon— returned from Egypt.

3 e nviaron a llamarle. Vino, pues, Jeroboam, y toda la congregación de Israel, y hablaron a Roboam, diciendo:

And they sent and called him, and Jeroboam and all the assembly of Israel came and said to Rehoboam,

4 T u padre hizo pesado nuestro yugo, mas ahora disminuye tú algo de la dura servidumbre de tu padre, y del yugo pesado que puso sobre nosotros, y te serviremos.

Your father made our yoke heavy; now therefore lighten the hard service and the heavy yoke your father put upon us, and we will serve you.

5 Y él les dijo: Id, y de aquí a tres días volved a mí. Y el pueblo se fue.

He replied, Go away for three days and then return to me. So the people departed.

6 E ntonces el rey Roboam pidió consejo de los ancianos que habían estado delante de Salomón su padre cuando vivía, y dijo: ¿Qué me aconsejáis vosotros que responda a este pueblo?

And King Rehoboam consulted with the old men who stood before Solomon his father while he yet lived and said, How do you advise me to answer this people?

7 Y ellos le hablaron diciendo: Si tú te haces hoy servidor de este pueblo y les hablas buenas palabras, ellos te servirán para siempre.

And they said to him, If you will be a servant to this people today and serve them and answer them with good words, they will be your servants forever.

8 P ero él dejó el consejo que los ancianos le habían dado, y pidió consejo de los jóvenes que se habían criado con él, y estaban a su servicio.

But he forsook the counsel the old men gave him and consulted the young men who grew up with him and stood before him.

9 Y les dijo: ¿Qué me aconsejáis vosotros que responda a este pueblo, que me ha hablado diciendo: Disminuye algo del yugo que tu padre puso sobre nosotros?

He said to them, What do you advise that we answer this people who have said, Make the yoke your father put on us lighter?

10 E ntonces los jóvenes que se habían criado con él le respondieron diciendo: Así hablarás a este pueblo que te ha dicho: Tu padre hizo pesado nuestro yugo, mas tú disminúyenos algo; esto debes responderles: El menor dedo de los míos es más grueso que los lomos de mi padre.

The young men who grew up with him answered, To the people who told you, Your father made our yoke heavy, but you make it lighter for us—say this, My little finger shall be thicker than my father’s loins.

11 A hora, pues, mi padre os cargó de pesado yugo, mas yo añadiré a vuestro yugo; mi padre os castigó con azotes, mas yo os castigaré con escorpiones.

And now whereas my father loaded you with a heavy yoke, I will add to your yoke. My father chastised you with whips, but I will chastise you with scorpions.

12 A l tercer día vino Jeroboam con todo el pueblo a Roboam, según el rey lo había mandado, diciendo: Volved a mí al tercer día.

So Jeroboam and all the people came to Rehoboam on the third day, as the king had appointed.

13 Y el rey respondió al pueblo duramente, dejando el consejo que los ancianos le habían dado;

And the king answered the people roughly and forsook the counsel the old men had given him,

14 y les habló conforme al consejo de los jóvenes, diciendo: Mi padre hizo pesado vuestro yugo, pero yo añadiré a vuestro yugo; mi padre os castigó con azotes, mas yo os castigaré con escorpiones.

And spoke to them after the counsel of the young men, saying, My father made your yoke heavy, but I will add to your yoke; he chastised you with whips, but I will chastise you with scorpions.

15 Y no oyó el rey al pueblo; porque era designio de Jehová para confirmar la palabra que Jehová había hablado por medio de Ahías silonita a Jeroboam hijo de Nebat.

So the king did not hearken to the people, for the situation was from the Lord, that He might fulfill His word which He spoke by Ahijah the Shilonite to Jeroboam son of Nebat.

16 C uando todo el pueblo vio que el rey no les había oído, le respondieron diciendo: ¿Qué parte tenemos nosotros con David? No tenemos heredad en el hijo de Isay. ¡Israel, a tus tiendas! ¡Provee ahora en tu casa, David! Entonces Israel se fue a sus tiendas.

So when all Israel saw that the king did not heed them, they answered the king, What portion have we in David? We have no inheritance in the son of Jesse. To your tents, O Israel! Look now to your own house, David! So Israel went to their tents.

17 P ero reinó Roboam sobre los hijos de Israel que moraban en las ciudades de Judá.

But Rehoboam reigned over the Israelites who dwelt in the cities of Judah.

18 Y el rey Roboam envió a Adoram, que estaba sobre los tributos; pero lo apedreó todo Israel, y murió. Entonces el rey Roboam se apresuró a subirse en un carro y huir a Jerusalén.

Then King Rehoboam sent Adoram, who was over the tribute, and all Israel stoned him to death with stones. So King Rehoboam hastened to get into his chariot to flee to Jerusalem.

19 A sí se apartó Israel de la casa de David hasta hoy.

So Israel has rebelled against the house of David to this day.

20 Y aconteció que oyendo todo Israel que Jeroboam había vuelto, enviaron a llamarle a la congregación, y le hicieron rey sobre todo Israel, sin quedar tribu alguna que siguiese a la casa de David, sino sólo la tribu de Judá.

When all Israel heard that Jeroboam had returned, they sent and called him to the assembly and made him king over all Israel. None followed the house of David except the tribe of Judah only.

21 Y cuando Roboam vino a Jerusalén, reunió a toda la casa de Judá y a la tribu de Benjamín, ciento ochenta mil hombres, guerreros escogidos, con el fin de combatir contra la casa de Israel, y devolver el reino a Roboam hijo de Salomón.

And when Rehoboam had come to Jerusalem, he assembled all the house of Judah, with the tribe of Benjamin, 180, 000 chosen warriors, to fight against the house of Israel to bring the kingdom back to Rehoboam son of Solomon.

22 P ero vino palabra de Jehová a Semaías varón de Dios, diciendo:

But the word of God came to Shemaiah the man of God, saying,

23 H abla a Roboam hijo de Salomón, rey de Judá, y a toda la casa de Judá y de Benjamín, y a los demás del pueblo, diciendo:

Tell Rehoboam son of Solomon king of Judah and all the house of Judah and Benjamin and the remnant of the people,

24 A sí ha dicho Jehová: No vayáis, ni peleéis contra vuestros hermanos los hijos de Israel; volveos cada uno a su casa, porque esto lo he hecho yo. Y ellos oyeron la palabra de Dios, y volvieron y se fueron, conforme a la palabra de Jehová. El pecado de Jeroboam

Thus says the Lord, You shall not go up or fight against your brethren, the Israelites. Return every man to his house, for this thing is from Me. So they hearkened to the Lord’s word and returned home, according to the Lord’s word.

25 E ntonces Jeroboam reedificó Siquem en el monte de Efraín, y habitó en ella; y saliendo de allí, fortificó Penuel.

Then Jeroboam built Shechem in the hill country of Ephraim and lived there. He went out from there and built Penuel.

26 Y dijo Jeroboam en su corazón: Ahora se volverá el reino a la casa de David,

Jeroboam said in his heart, Now the kingdom will return to the house of David.

27 s i este pueblo continúa subiendo a ofrecer sacrificios en la casa de Jehová en Jerusalén; porque el corazón de este pueblo se volverá a su señor Roboam rey de Judá, y me matarán a mí, y se volverán a Roboam rey de Judá.

If this people goes up to the house of the Lord at Jerusalem to sacrifice, then the heart of this people will turn again to their lord, to Rehoboam king of Judah; and they will kill me and go back to Rehoboam king of Judah.

28 Y habiendo tenido consejo, hizo el rey dos becerros de oro, y dijo al pueblo: Bastante habéis subido a Jerusalén; he aquí tus dioses, oh Israel, los cuales te hicieron subir de la tierra de Egipto.

So the king took counsel and made two calves of gold. And he said to the people, It is too much for you to go up to Jerusalem. Behold your gods, O Israel, who brought you up out of the land of Egypt.

29 Y puso uno en Betel, y el otro en Dan.

And he set the one golden calf in Bethel, and the other he put in Dan.

30 Y esto fue causa de pecado; porque el pueblo iba a adorar delante de uno u otro hasta Dan.

And this thing became a sin; for the people went to worship each of them even as far as Dan.

31 H izo también casas sobre los lugares altos, e hizo sacerdotes de entre el pueblo, que no eran de los hijos de Leví.

Jeroboam also made houses on high places and made priests of people who were not Levites.

32 E ntonces instituyó Jeroboam fiesta solemne en el mes octavo, a los quince días del mes, conforme a la fiesta solemne que se celebraba en Judá; y sacrificó sobre un altar. Así hizo en Betel, ofreciendo sacrificios a los becerros que había hecho. Ordenó también en Betel sacerdotes para los lugares altos que él había construido.

And Jeroboam appointed a feast on the fifteenth day of the eighth month, like the feast kept in Judah, and he offered sacrifices upon the altar. So he did in Bethel, sacrificing to the calves he had made. And he placed in Bethel the priests of the high places he had made.

33 S acrificó, pues, sobre el altar que él había hecho en Betel, a los quince días del mes octavo, el mes que él había inventado de su propio corazón; e hizo fiesta a los hijos de Israel, y subió al altar para quemar incienso.

So he offered upon the altar he had made in Bethel on the fifteenth day of the eighth month, a date which he chose individually; and he appointed a feast for the Israelites and he went up to the altar to burn incense
