1 Y estaba enfermo cierto hombre llamado Lázaro, de Betania, la aldea de María y de su hermana Marta.

Now a certain man named Lazarus was ill. He was of Bethany, the village where Mary and her sister Martha lived.

2 M aría, cuyo hermano Lázaro estaba enfermo, fue la que ungió al Señor con perfume y le secó los pies con sus cabellos.

This Mary was the one who anointed the Lord with perfume and wiped His feet with her hair. It was her brother Lazarus who was sick.

3 L as hermanas entonces mandaron a decir a Jesús: Señor, mira, el que tú amas está enfermo.

So the sisters sent to Him, saying, Lord, he whom You love is sick.

4 C uando Jesús lo oyó, dijo: Esta enfermedad no es para muerte, sino para la gloria de Dios, para que el Hijo de Dios sea glorificado por medio de ella.

When Jesus received the message, He said, This sickness is not to end in death; but it is to honor God and to promote His glory, that the Son of God may be glorified through (by) it.

5 Y Jesús amaba a Marta, a su hermana y a Lázaro.

Now Jesus loved Martha and her sister and Lazarus.

6 C uando oyó, pues, que Lázaro estaba enfermo, entonces se quedó dos días más en el lugar donde estaba.

Therefore when He heard that Lazarus was sick, He still stayed two days longer in the same place where He was.

7 L uego, después de esto, dijo a sus discípulos: Vamos de nuevo a Judea.

Then after that interval He said to His disciples, Let us go back again to Judea.

8 L os discípulos le dijeron: Rabí, hace poco que los judíos procuraban apedrearte, ¿y vas otra vez allá?

The disciples said to Him, Rabbi, the Jews only recently were intending and trying to stone You, and are You going back there again?

9 J esús respondió: ¿No hay doce horas en el día? Si alguno anda de día no tropieza, porque ve la luz de este mundo.

Jesus answered, Are there not twelve hours in the day? Anyone who walks about in the daytime does not stumble, because he sees the light of this world.

10 P ero si alguno anda de noche, tropieza, porque la luz no está en él.

But if anyone walks about in the night, he does stumble, because there is no light in him.

11 D ijo esto, y después de esto añadió: Nuestro amigo Lázaro se ha dormido; pero voy a despertarlo.

He said these things, and then added, Our friend Lazarus is at rest and sleeping; but I am going there that I may awaken him out of his sleep.

12 L os discípulos entonces le dijeron: Señor, si se ha dormido, se recuperará.

The disciples answered, Lord, if he is sleeping, he will recover.

13 P ero Jesús había hablado de la muerte de Lázaro, mas ellos creyeron que hablaba literalmente del sueño.

However, Jesus had spoken of his death, but they thought that He referred to falling into a refreshing and natural sleep.

14 E ntonces Jesús, por eso, les dijo claramente: Lázaro ha muerto;

So then Jesus told them plainly, Lazarus is dead,

15 y por causa de vosotros me alegro de no haber estado allí, para que creáis; pero vamos a donde está él.

And for your sake I am glad that I was not there; it will help you to believe (to trust and rely on Me). However, let us go to him.

16 T omás, llamado el Dídimo, dijo entonces a sus condiscípulos: Vamos nosotros también para morir con El.

Then Thomas, who was called the Twin, said to his fellow disciples, Let us go too, that we may die along with Him.

17 L legó, pues, Jesús y halló que ya hacía cuatro días que estaba en el sepulcro.

So when Jesus arrived, He found that he had already been in the tomb four days.

18 B etania estaba cerca de Jerusalén, como a tres kilómetros;

Bethany was near Jerusalem, only about two miles away,

19 y muchos de los judíos habían venido a casa de Marta y María, para consolarlas por la muerte de su hermano.

And a considerable number of the Jews had gone out to see Martha and Mary to console them concerning their brother.

20 E ntonces Marta, cuando oyó que Jesús venía, fue a su encuentro, pero María se quedó sentada en casa.

When Martha heard that Jesus was coming, she went to meet Him, while Mary remained sitting in the house.

21 Y Marta dijo a Jesús: Señor, si hubieras estado aquí, mi hermano no habría muerto.

Martha then said to Jesus, Master, if You had been here, my brother would not have died.

22 A un ahora, yo sé que todo lo que pidas a Dios, Dios te lo concederá.

And even now I know that whatever You ask from God, He will grant it to You.

23 J esús le dijo: Tu hermano resucitará.

Jesus said to her, Your brother shall rise again.

24 M arta le contestó: Yo sé que resucitará en la resurrección, en el día final.

Martha replied, I know that he will rise again in the resurrection at the last day.

25 J esús le dijo: Yo soy la resurrección y la vida; el que cree en mí, aunque muera, vivirá,

Jesus said to her, I am the Resurrection and the Life. Whoever believes in (adheres to, trusts in, and relies on) Me, although he may die, yet he shall live;

26 y todo el que vive y cree en mí, no morirá jamás. ¿Crees esto?

And whoever continues to live and believes in (has faith in, cleaves to, and relies on) Me shall never die at all. Do you believe this?

27 E lla le dijo: Sí, Señor; yo he creído que tú eres el Cristo, el Hijo de Dios, el que viene al mundo.

She said to Him, Yes, Lord, I have believed that You are the Christ (the Messiah, the Anointed One), the Son of God, Who was to come into the world.

28 Y habiendo dicho esto, se fue y llamó a su hermana María, diciéndole en secreto: El Maestro está aquí, y te llama.

After she had said this, she went back and called her sister Mary, privately whispering to her, The Teacher is close at hand and is asking for you.

29 T an pronto como ella lo oyó, se levantó rápidamente y fue hacia El.

When she heard this, she sprang up quickly and went to Him.

30 P ues Jesús aún no había entrado en la aldea, sino que todavía estaba en el lugar donde Marta le había encontrado.

Now Jesus had not yet entered the village, but was still at the same spot where Martha had met Him.

31 E ntonces los judíos que estaban con ella en la casa consolándola, cuando vieron que María se levantó de prisa y salió, la siguieron, suponiendo que iba al sepulcro a llorar allí.

When the Jews who were sitting with her in the house and consoling her saw how hastily Mary had arisen and gone out, they followed her, supposing that she was going to the tomb to pour out her grief there.

32 C uando María llegó adonde estaba Jesús, al verle, se arrojó entonces a sus pies, diciéndole: Señor, si hubieras estado aquí, mi hermano no habría muerto.

When Mary came to the place where Jesus was and saw Him, she dropped down at His feet, saying to Him, Lord, if You had been here, my brother would not have died.

33 Y cuando Jesús la vio llorando, y a los judíos que vinieron con ella llorando también, se conmovió profundamente en el espíritu, y se entristeció,

When Jesus saw her sobbing, and the Jews who came with her sobbing, He was deeply moved in spirit and troubled.

34 y dijo: ¿Dónde lo pusisteis? Le dijeron: Señor, ven y ve.

And He said, Where have you laid him? They said to Him, Lord, come and see.

35 J esús lloró.

Jesus wept.

36 P or eso los judíos decían: Mirad, cómo lo amaba.

The Jews said, See how He loved him!

37 P ero algunos de ellos dijeron: ¿No podía éste, que abrió los ojos del ciego, haber evitado también que Lázaro muriera ? Resurrección de Lázaro

But some of them said, Could not He Who opened a blind man’s eyes have prevented this man from dying?

38 E ntonces Jesús, de nuevo profundamente conmovido en su interior, fue al sepulcro. Era una cueva, y tenía una piedra puesta sobre ella.

Now Jesus, again sighing repeatedly and deeply disquieted, approached the tomb. It was a cave (a hole in the rock), and a boulder lay against it.

39 J esús dijo: Quitad la piedra. Marta, hermana del que había muerto, le dijo: Señor, ya hiede, porque hace cuatro días que murió.

Jesus said, Take away the stone. Martha, the sister of the dead man, exclaimed, But Lord, by this time he throws off an offensive odor, for he has been dead four days!

40 J esús le dijo: ¿No te dije que si crees, verás la gloria de Dios ?

Jesus said to her, Did I not tell you and promise you that if you would believe and rely on Me, you would see the glory of God?

41 E ntonces quitaron la piedra. Jesús alzó los ojos a lo alto, y dijo: Padre, te doy gracias porque me has oído.

So they took away the stone. And Jesus lifted up His eyes and said, Father, I thank You that You have heard Me.

42 Y o sabía que siempre me oyes; pero lo dije por causa de la multitud que me rodea, para que crean que tú me has enviado.

Yes, I know You always hear and listen to Me, but I have said this on account of and for the benefit of the people standing around, so that they may believe that You did send Me.

43 H abiendo dicho esto, gritó con fuerte voz: ¡Lázaro, ven fuera!

When He had said this, He shouted with a loud voice, Lazarus, come out!

44 Y el que había muerto salió, los pies y las manos atados con vendas, y el rostro envuelto en un sudario. Jesús les dijo: Desatadlo, y dejadlo ir. Complot para matar a Jesús

And out walked the man who had been dead, his hands and feet wrapped in burial cloths (linen strips), and with a napkin bound around his face. Jesus said to them, Free him of the burial wrappings and let him go.

45 P or esto muchos de los judíos que habían venido a ver a María, y vieron lo que Jesús había hecho, creyeron en El.

Upon seeing what Jesus had done, many of the Jews who had come with Mary believed in Him.

46 P ero algunos de ellos fueron a los fariseos y les contaron lo que Jesús había hecho.

But some of them went back to the Pharisees and told them what Jesus had done.

47 E ntonces los principales sacerdotes y los fariseos convocaron un concilio, y decían: ¿Qué hacemos? Porque este hombre hace muchas señales.

So the chief priests and Pharisees called a meeting of the council (the Sanhedrin) and said, What are we to do? For this Man performs many signs (evidences, miracles).

48 S i le dejamos seguir así, todos van a creer en El, y los romanos vendrán y nos quitarán nuestro lugar y nuestra nación.

If we let Him alone to go on like this, everyone will believe in Him and adhere to Him, and the Romans will come and suppress and destroy and take away our place and our nation '> our temple and city and our civil organization].

49 P ero uno de ellos, Caifás, que era sumo sacerdote ese año, les dijo: Vosotros no sabéis nada,

But one of them, Caiaphas, who was the high priest that year, declared, You know nothing at all!

50 n i tenéis en cuenta que os es más conveniente que un hombre muera por el pueblo, y no que toda la nación perezca.

Nor do you understand or reason out that it is expedient and better for your own welfare that one man should die on behalf of the people than that the whole nation should perish (be destroyed, ruined).

51 A hora bien, no dijo esto de su propia iniciativa, sino que siendo el sumo sacerdote ese año, profetizó que Jesús iba a morir por la nación;

Now he did not say this simply of his own accord; but being the high priest that year, he prophesied that Jesus was to die for the nation,

52 y no sólo por la nación, sino también para reunir en uno a los hijos de Dios que están esparcidos.

And not only for the nation but also for the purpose of uniting into one body the children of God who have been scattered far and wide.

53 A sí que, desde ese día planearon entre sí para matarle.

So from that day on they took counsel and plotted together how they might put Him to death.

54 P or eso Jesús ya no andaba públicamente entre los judíos, sino que se fue de allí a la región cerca del desierto, a una ciudad llamada Efraín; y se quedó allí con los discípulos.

For that reason Jesus no longer appeared publicly among the Jews, but left there and retired to the district that borders on the wilderness (the desert), to a village called Ephraim, and there He stayed with the disciples.

55 Y estaba cerca la Pascua de los judíos, y muchos de la región subieron a Jerusalén antes de la Pascua para purificarse.

Now the Jewish Passover was at hand, and many from the country went up to Jerusalem in order that they might purify and consecrate themselves before the Passover.

56 E ntonces buscaban a Jesús, y estando ellos en el templo, se decían unos a otros: ¿Qué os parece? ¿Que no vendrá a la fiesta ?

So they kept looking for Jesus and questioned among themselves as they were standing about in the temple '> area], What do you think? Will He not come to the Feast at all?

57 Y los principales sacerdotes y los fariseos habían dado órdenes de que si alguien sabía dónde estaba Jesús, diera aviso para que le prendieran.

Now the chief priests and Pharisees had given orders that if anyone knew where He was, he should report it to them, so that they might arrest Him.
