1 I t was told Joab, Behold, the king is weeping and mourning for Absalom.

Entonces avisaron a Joab: «El rey llora y se lamenta por Absalón.»

2 S o the victory that day was turned into mourning for all the people, for they heard it said, The king grieves for his son.

Y se convirtió aquel día la victoria en luto para todo el pueblo; porque aquel día oyó decir el pueblo que el rey estaba afligido por su hijo.

3 T he people slipped into the city stealthily that day as humiliated people steal away when they flee in battle.

Y entró el pueblo aquel día en la ciudad escondiéndose, como suele entrar a escondidas el pueblo avergonzado que ha huido de la batalla.

4 B ut the king covered his face and cried with a loud voice, O my son Absalom, O Absalom, my son, my son!

Pero el rey, cubierto el rostro, clamaba en alta voz: «¡Hijo mío Absalón, Absalón, hijo mío, hijo mío!»

5 A nd Joab came into the house to the king and said, You have today covered the faces of all your servants with shame, who this day have saved your life and the lives of your sons and your daughters and the lives of your wives and concubines.

Entonces Joab entró en la casa donde estaba el rey y le dijo: «Hoy has cubierto de vergüenza el rostro de todos tus siervos, que hoy han librado tu vida, la vida de tus hijos y de tus hijas, la vida de tus mujeres y de tus concubinas,

6 F or you love those who hate you and hate those who love you. You have declared today that princes and servants are nothing to you; for today I see that if Absalom had lived and all the rest of us had died, you would be well pleased.

amando a los que te aborrecen y aborreciendo a los que te aman; porque hoy has declarado que nada te importan tus príncipes y siervos; hoy me has hecho ver claramente que si Absalón viviera, aunque todos nosotros estuviéramos muertos, entonces estarías contento.

7 S o now arise, go out and speak kindly and encouragingly to your servants; for I swear by the Lord that if you do not go, not a man will remain with you this night. And this will be worse for you than all the evil that has befallen you from your youth until now.

Levántate pues, ahora, sal y habla bondadosamente a tus siervos; juro por Jehová que si no sales, no quedará ni un hombre contigo esta noche; y esto será peor para ti que todos los males que te han sobrevenido desde tu juventud hasta ahora.»

8 T hen the king arose and sat in the gate. And all were told, The king is sitting in the gate, and they all came before the king. Now Israel had fled, every man to his home.

Entonces se levantó el rey y se sentó a la puerta. Cuando se avisó a todo el pueblo: «El rey está sentado a la puerta», vino todo el pueblo delante del rey. Mientras, los de Israel habían huido cada uno a su tienda.

9 A nd all the people were at strife throughout all the tribes of Israel, saying, The king delivered us from the hands of our enemies, and he saved us from the hands of the Philistines. And now he has fled out of the land from Absalom.

Y todo el pueblo discutía en todas las tribus de Israel diciendo: «El rey nos ha librado de manos de nuestros enemigos y nos ha salvado de manos de los filisteos; pero ahora ha huido del país por miedo de Absalón.

10 A nd Absalom, whom we anointed over us, is dead in battle. So now, why do you say nothing about bringing back the king?

Y Absalón, a quien habíamos ungido sobre nosotros, ha muerto en la batalla. ¿Por qué, pues, estáis callados respecto de hacer volver al rey?»

11 A nd King David sent to Zadok and to Abiathar the priests, saying, Say to the elders of Judah, Why are you the last to bring the king back to his house, when the word of all Israel has come to the king, to bring him to his house?

Entonces el rey David mandó decir a los sacerdotes Sadoc y Abiatar: «Hablad a los ancianos de Judá y decidles: “¿Por qué vais a ser vosotros los últimos en hacer volver el rey a su casa, cuando la palabra de todo Israel ha venido al rey para hacerlo volver a su casa?

12 Y ou are my kinsmen; you are my bone and my flesh. Why then are you the last to bring back the king?

Vosotros sois mis hermanos; mis huesos y mi carne sois. ¿Por qué, pues, seréis vosotros los últimos en hacer volver al rey?”

13 A nd say to Amasa, Are you not of my bone and of my flesh? May God do so to me, and more also, if you are not commander of my army hereafter in place of Joab.

Asimismo diréis a Amasa: “¿No eres tú también hueso mío y carne mía? Traiga Dios sobre mí el peor de los castigos, si no te hago general de mi ejército para siempre, en lugar de Joab.”»

14 H e inclined the hearts of all the men of Judah as one man, so they sent word to, Return, you and all your servants.

Así inclinó el corazón de todos los hombres de Judá, como el de un solo hombre, para que enviaran a decir al rey: «Vuelve tú y todos tus siervos.»

15 S o returned and came to the Jordan. And Judah came to Gilgal to meet the king, to conduct him over the Jordan.

Volvió, pues, el rey, y llegó hasta el Jordán, mientras Judá venía a Gilgal para recibir al rey y hacerlo pasar el Jordán.

16 A nd Shimei son of Gera, a Benjamite of Bahurim, hastily came down with the men of Judah to meet King David,

También Simei hijo de Gera hijo de Benjamín, que era de Bahurim, se dio prisa y descendió con los hombres de Judá a recibir al rey David.

17 A nd 1, 000 men of Benjamin with him. And Ziba, the servant of the house of Saul, and his fifteen sons and twenty servants with him, rushed to the Jordan and pressed quickly into the king’s presence.

Con él venían mil hombres de Benjamín; asimismo Siba, criado de la casa de Saúl, con sus quince hijos y sus veinte siervos, los cuales pasaron el Jordán delante del rey.

18 A nd there went over a ferryboat to bring over the king’s household and to do what he thought good. And Shimei son of Gera fell down before the king as David came to the Jordan,

Y cruzaron el vado para hacer pasar a la familia del rey y complacer sus deseos. Simei hijo de Gera se postró delante del rey cuando éste pasó el Jordán,

19 A nd said to the king, Let not my lord impute iniquity to me and hold me guilty, nor remember what your servant did the day my lord went out of Jerusalem; may the king not take it to heart.

y le dijo: —¡No me culpe mi señor por mi falta! ¡No recuerdes los males que tu siervo hizo el día en que mi señor, el rey, salió de Jerusalén, ni los guarde el rey en su corazón!

20 F or your servant knows that I have sinned; therefore, behold, I am today the first of all the house of Joseph to come down to meet my lord the king.

Porque yo, tu siervo, reconozco haber pecado, pero soy hoy el primero de toda la casa de José que he descendido para recibir a mi señor, el rey.

21 B ut Abishai son of Zeruiah said, Shall not Shimei be put to death for this, because he cursed the Lord’s anointed?

Entonces intervino Abisai hijo de Sarvia y dijo: —¿No ha de morir por esto Simei, que maldijo al ungido de Jehová?

22 D avid said, What have I to do with you, you sons of Zeruiah, that you should be an adversary to me today? Shall anyone be put to death today in Israel? For do not I know that I am this day king over Israel?

Pero David respondió: —¿Qué tengo yo con vosotros, hijos de Sarvia, para que hoy me seáis adversarios? ¿Acaso ha de morir hoy alguien en Israel? ¿Acaso no sé que hoy vuelvo a ser rey de Israel?

23 T herefore the king said to Shimei, You shall not die. And the king gave him his oath.

Luego el rey dijo a Simei: —No morirás. Y el rey se lo juró.

24 M ephibosheth the son of Saul came down to meet the king, and had not dressed his feet, trimmed his beard, or washed his clothes from the day the king left until he returned in peace and safety.

También Mefi-boset hijo de Saúl descendió a recibir al rey; no había lavado sus pies ni cortado su barba. Tampoco había lavado sus vestidos desde el día en que salió el rey hasta el día en que volvió en paz.

25 A nd when he came to Jerusalem to meet the king, David said to him, Why did you not go with me, Mephibosheth?

Y cuando llegó a Jerusalén para recibir al rey, éste le dijo: —Mefi-boset, ¿por qué no viniste conmigo?

26 H e said, My lord O king, my servant deceived me; for I said, Saddle me the donkey that I may ride on it and go to the king, for your servant is lame.

Él respondió: —Rey y señor mío, mi siervo me engañó; tu siervo le había dicho: “Ensíllame un asno, montaré en él y me iré con el rey”, porque tu siervo es cojo.

27 H e has slandered your servant to my lord the king. But the king is as an angel of God; so do what is good in your eyes.

Él ha calumniado a tu siervo delante de mi señor, el rey; pero mi señor, el rey, es como un ángel de Dios; trátame, pues, como mejor te parezca.

28 F or all of my father’s house were but doomed to death before my lord the king; yet you set your servant among those who ate at your own table. What right therefore have I to cry any more to the king?

Porque toda la casa de mi padre era digna de muerte ante mi señor, el rey. Sin embargo, tú pusiste a tu siervo entre los convidados a tu mesa. ¿Qué derecho tengo aún de implorar algo al rey?

29 T he king said to him, Why speak any more of your affairs? I say, You and Ziba divide the land.

El rey le dijo: —¿Para qué más palabras? Yo he determinado que tú y Siba os dividáis las tierras.

30 M ephibosheth said to the king, Oh, let him take it all, since my lord the king has returned home in safety and peace.

Mefi-boset dijo al rey: —Deja que él las tome todas, puesto que mi señor el rey ha vuelto en paz a su casa.

31 N ow Barzillai the Gileadite came down from Rogelim and went on to the Jordan with the king to conduct him over the Jordan.

También Barzilai, el galaadita, descendió de Rogelim y pasó el Jordán con el rey, para acompañarlo al otro lado del Jordán.

32 N ow Barzillai was a very aged man, even eighty years old; and he had provided the king with food while he remained at Mahanaim, for he was a very great man.

Era Barzilai muy anciano; tenía ochenta años y había dado provisiones al rey cuando estaba en Mahanaim, porque era hombre muy rico.

33 A nd the king said to Barzillai, Come over with me, and I will provide for you with me in Jerusalem.

El rey le dijo: —Sigue conmigo y yo me encargaré de tu sustento en Jerusalén.

34 A nd Barzillai said to the king, How much longer have I to live, that it would be worthwhile for me to go up with the king to Jerusalem?

Pero Barzilai dijo al rey: —¿Cuántos años más habré de vivir para que yo suba con el rey a Jerusalén?

35 I am this day eighty years old. Could I now discern between good and evil? Can your servant appreciate what I eat or drink? Can I any longer enjoy the voices of singing men and women? Why then should your servant be still a burden to my lord the king?

¡Ya tengo ochenta años de edad! ¿Puedo distinguir entre lo que es agradable y lo que no lo es? ¿Gustará ahora tu siervo de lo que coma o beba? ¿Oirá aún la voz de los cantores y de las cantoras? ¿Por qué, pues, ha de ser tu siervo una carga para mi señor, el rey?

36 Y our servant will only go over the Jordan with the king. Why should the king repay me with such a reward?

Tu siervo seguirá contigo un poco más allá del Jordán, pero ¿para qué ha de darme el rey tan gran recompensa?

37 L et your servant turn back again, that I may die in my own city and be buried by the grave of my father and mother. But here is your servant Chimham; let him go over with my lord the king. And do to him what shall seem good to you.

Yo te ruego que dejes volver a tu siervo, para que muera en mi ciudad, junto al sepulcro de mi padre y de mi madre. Aquí está tu siervo Quimam. Que siga él con mi señor, el rey, y haz con él lo que bien te parezca.

38 T he king answered, Chimham shall go over with me, and I will do to him what seems good to you; and whatever you ask of me I will do for you.

El rey dijo: —Pues siga conmigo Quimam, y yo haré con él como bien te parezca; todo lo que tú me pidas, yo lo haré.

39 S o all the people went over the Jordan. When the king had crossed over, he kissed Barzillai and blessed him, and returned to his own place.

Todo el pueblo pasó el Jordán. Luego que hubo también pasado, el rey besó a Barzilai y lo bendijo, y él regresó a su casa.

40 T hen the king went on to Gilgal, and Chimham went with him; and all the people of Judah and also half the people of Israel escorted the king.

Siguió entonces el rey hacia Gilgal, y con él pasó Quimam. Todo el pueblo de Judá acompañaba al rey, y también la mitad del pueblo de Israel.

41 A nd all the men of Israel came to the king and said to him, Why have our kinsmen, the men of Judah, stolen you away and have brought the king and his household over the Jordan, and all David’s men with him?

En esto, todos los hombres de Israel vinieron a decir al rey: —¿Por qué los hombres de Judá, nuestros hermanos, se han adueñado de ti, y han hecho pasar el Jordán al rey, a su familia y a todos los siervos de David con él?

42 B ut all the men of Judah answered the men of Israel, Because the king is near of kin to us. Why then be angry about it? Have we eaten at all at the king’s expense? Or has he given us any gift?

Todos los hombres de Judá respondieron a todos los de Israel: —Porque el rey es nuestro pariente. Pero ¿por qué os enojáis vosotros de eso? ¿Hemos nosotros comido a expensas del rey? ¿Hemos recibido de él algún regalo?

43 T hen the men of Israel answered the men of Judah, We have ten shares in the king; and we have more right to David than you have. Why then did you despise and ignore us? Were we not the first to speak of our bringing back our king? But the words of the men of Judah were more violent than the charges of the men of Israel.

Entonces los hombres de Israel respondieron a los de Judá: —Nosotros tenemos sobre el rey, y sobre el mismo David, diez veces más derechos que vosotros. ¿Por qué, pues, nos habéis menospreciado? ¿Acaso no fuimos nosotros los primeros que propusimos hacer volver a nuestro rey? Sin embargo, las palabras de los hombres de Judá fueron más violentas que las de los hombres de Israel.
