1 A fter this, David inquired of the Lord, saying, Shall I go up into any of the cities of Judah? And the Lord said to him, Go up. David said, To which shall I go up? And He said, To Hebron.

Después de esto aconteció que David consultó a Jehová diciendo: —¿Subiré a alguna de las ciudades de Judá? Jehová le respondió: —Sube. David volvió a preguntar: —¿A dónde subiré? —A Hebrón —le respondió él.

2 S o David went up there with his two wives, Ahinoam the Jezreelitess and Abigail, the widow of Nabal of Carmel.

David subió allá con sus dos mujeres, Ahinoam, la jezreelita y Abigail, la que fue mujer de Nabal, el de Carmel.

3 A nd David brought up his men who were with him, each one with his household, and they dwelt in the towns of Hebron.

También llevó David consigo a los hombres que lo acompañaban, cada uno con su familia, los cuales habitaron en las ciudades de Hebrón.

4 A nd the men of Judah came and there they anointed David king over the house of Judah. They told David, The men of Jabesh-gilead buried Saul.

Luego vinieron los hombres de Judá y ungieron allí a David como rey sobre la casa de Judá. Cuando avisaron a David que los de Jabes de Galaad habían sepultado a Saúl,

5 A nd David sent messengers to the men of Jabesh-gilead, saying, May the Lord bless you because you showed kindness and loyalty to Saul your king and buried him.

envió unos mensajeros a los de Jabes de Galaad, diciéndoles: «Benditos seáis vosotros de Jehová, por haber hecho esta obra de misericordia con vuestro señor, con Saúl, dándole sepultura.

6 A nd now may the Lord show loving-kindness and faithfulness to you. I also will do well by you because you have done this.

Ahora, pues, que Jehová os trate con misericordia y verdad. También yo os trataré bien por esto que habéis hecho.

7 S o now, let your hands be strengthened and be valiant, for your master Saul is dead, and the house of Judah has anointed me king over them.

Esfuércense, pues, ahora vuestras manos y sed valientes; pues murió Saúl, vuestro señor, y los de la casa de Judá me han ungido para que sea su rey.» Guerra entre David y la casa de Saúl

8 N ow Abner son of Ner, commander of Saul’s army, took Ish-bosheth son of Saul and brought him over to Mahanaim.

Pero Abner hijo de Ner, general del ejército de Saúl, tomó a Is-boset hijo de Saúl, lo llevó a Mahanaim

9 A nd he made him king over Gilead, the Ashurites, Jezreel, Ephraim, Benjamin, and all Israel.

y lo proclamó rey sobre Galaad, sobre Gesuri, sobre Jezreel, sobre Efraín, sobre Benjamín y sobre todo Israel.

10 I sh-bosheth, Saul’s son, was forty years old when he began his two-year reign over Israel. But the house of Judah followed David.

De cuarenta años era Is-boset hijo de Saúl cuando comenzó a reinar sobre Israel, y reinó dos años. Solamente los de la casa de Judá siguieron a David.

11 A nd David was king in Hebron over the house of Judah for seven years and six months.

El número de días que David reinó en Hebrón sobre la casa de Judá fue de siete años y seis meses.

12 A nd Abner son of Ner and the servants of Ish-bosheth son of Saul went out from Mahanaim to Gibeon.

Abner hijo de Ner salió de Mahanaim a Gabaón con los siervos de Is-boset hijo de Saúl.

13 J oab son of Zeruiah and the servants of David went out also; and the two groups met by the pool of Gibeon, seating themselves with one group on either side of the pool.

Joab, hijo de Sarvia y los siervos de David salieron también y los encontraron junto al estanque de Gabaón; se pararon, los unos a un lado del estanque y los otros al otro lado.

14 A nd Abner said to Joab, Let the young men now arise and have a contest before us. And Joab said, Let them arise.

Dijo entonces Abner a Joab: —Levántense ahora los jóvenes y maniobren delante de nosotros. Joab respondió: —Que se levanten.

15 T hen there arose and went over by number—twelve of Benjamin who were with Ish-bosheth son of Saul, and twelve of the servants of David.

Entonces se levantaron y avanzaron en número igual, doce de Benjamín por Is-boset hijo de Saúl, y doce de los siervos de David.

16 A nd each caught his opponent by the head and thrust his sword into his side; so they all fell together. Therefore that place was called the Field of Sharp Knives, which is at Gibeon.

Cada uno echó mano de la cabeza de su adversario y metió la espada en el costado de su adversario, y cayeron todos a la vez; por eso aquel lugar, que está en Gabaón, fue llamado «Helcat-hazurim».

17 A very fierce battle followed, and Abner and the men of Israel were beaten before the servants of David.

Aquel día se libró una batalla muy reñida, y Abner y los de Israel fueron vencidos por los siervos de David.

18 T hree sons of Zeruiah were there: Joab, Abishai, and Asahel. Now Asahel was as light of foot as a wild roe or antelope.

Estaban allí los tres hijos de Sarvia: Joab, Abisai y Asael. Asael, que era ligero de pies como una gacela del campo,

19 A sahel pursued Abner, and as he ran he turned not to the right hand or to the left from following Abner.

se lanzó detrás de Abner, sin apartarse ni a derecha ni a izquierda.

20 T hen Abner looked behind him and said, Are you Asahel? He answered, I am.

Abner volvió la vista y dijo: —¿No eres tú Asael? —Sí —respondió él.

21 A bner said to him, Turn aside to your right or left, and seize one of the young men and take his armor. But Asahel would not turn aside from following him.

Entonces Abner le dijo: —Apártate a la derecha o a la izquierda, echa mano de alguno de los hombres y toma para ti sus despojos. Pero Asael no quiso dejar de perseguirlo.

22 A nd Abner said again to Asahel, Turn aside from following me. Why should I strike you to the ground? How then should I be able to face Joab your brother?

Abner volvió a decir a Asael: —Deja de perseguirme; ¿por qué he de herirte hasta derribarte? ¿Cómo podría levantar entonces mi rostro delante de tu hermano Joab?

23 A sahel refused to turn aside; so Abner with the rear end of his spear smote him through the abdomen, and he fell and died where he fell. And all who came to the place where Asahel fell and died stood still.

Como no quiso irse, Abner lo hirió con la empuñadura de la lanza por la quinta costilla. La lanza le salió por la espalda, y cayó muerto allí mismo. Y todos los que venían por aquel lugar donde Asael había caído muerto, se detenían.

24 B ut Joab and Abishai pursued Abner; the sun was going down as they came to the hill of Ammah, before Giah on the way to the wilderness of Gibeon.

Pero Joab y Abisai persiguieron a Abner. Cuando el sol se puso, llegaron a la colina de Amma, que está delante de Gía, junto al camino del desierto de Gabaón.

25 A nd the Benjamites gathered together behind Abner and became one troop and took their stand on the top of a hill.

Se agruparon los hijos de Benjamín detrás de Abner, formando un solo ejército, e hicieron un alto en la cumbre de la colina.

26 T hen Abner called to Joab, Shall the sword devour forever? Do you not know that bitterness will be the result? How long will it be then before you bid the people to stop pursuing their brethren?

Entonces Abner gritó a Joab diciendo: —¿Nos devorará la espada perpetuamente? ¿No sabes tú que al cabo todo será amargura? ¿Hasta cuándo esperarás para decir al pueblo que deje de perseguir a sus hermanos?

27 J oab said, As God lives, if you had not spoken, surely the men would have stopped pursuing their brethren in the morning.

Joab respondió: —¡Vive Dios!, que de no haber hablado tú, el pueblo habría dejado de perseguir a sus hermanos sólo en la mañana.

28 S o Joab blew a trumpet, and all the people stood still and pursued Israel no more, nor did they fight any more.

Entonces Joab tocó el cuerno: todo el pueblo se detuvo y no persiguió más a los de Israel, ni peleó más.

29 A bner and his men went all night through the Arabah, crossed the Jordan, and went through the whole Bithron and came to Mahanaim.

Abner y los suyos caminaron por el Arabá toda aquella noche, pasaron el Jordán, cruzaron por todo Bitrón y llegaron a Mahanaim.

30 J oab returned from pursuing Abner, and when he had gathered all the people together, there were missing of David’s servants nineteen men besides Asahel.

Joab también dejó de perseguir a Abner y reunió a todo el pueblo. De los siervos de David faltaron Asael y diecinueve hombres.

31 B ut the servants of David had slain of Benjamin 360 of Abner’s men.

Pero los siervos de David hirieron a trescientos sesenta de los hombres de Benjamín y de Abner, los cuales murieron.

32 A nd they took up Asahel and buried him in the tomb of his father at Bethlehem. And Joab and his men walked all night and came to Hebron at daybreak.

Tomaron luego a Asael y lo sepultaron en el sepulcro de su padre en Belén. Después de caminar toda aquella noche, Joab y sus hombres llegaron a Hebrón al amanecer.
