1 T hen Jesus said to the multitudes and to His disciples,

Entonces habló Jesús a la gente y a sus discípulos, diciendo:

2 T he scribes and Pharisees sit on Moses’ seat.

«En la cátedra de Moisés se sientan los escribas y los fariseos.

3 S o observe and practice all they tell you; but do not do what they do, for they preach, but do not practice.

Así que, todo lo que os digan que guardéis, guardadlo y hacedlo; pero no hagáis conforme a sus obras, porque dicen, pero no hacen.

4 T hey tie up heavy loads, hard to bear, and place them on men’s shoulders, but they themselves will not lift a finger to help bear them.

Atan cargas pesadas y difíciles de llevar, y las ponen sobre los hombros de los hombres; pero ellos ni con un dedo quieren moverlas.

5 T hey do all their works to be seen of men; for they make wide their phylacteries ( small cases enclosing certain Scripture passages, worn during prayer on the left arm and forehead) and make long their fringes.

Antes bien, hacen todas sus obras para ser vistos por los hombres, pues ensanchan sus filacterias y extienden los flecos de sus mantos;

6 A nd they take pleasure in and love the place of honor at feasts and the best seats in the synagogues,

aman los primeros asientos en las cenas, las primeras sillas en las sinagogas,

7 A nd to be greeted with honor in the marketplaces and to have people call them rabbi.

las salutaciones en las plazas y que los hombres los llamen: “Rabí, Rabí”.

8 B ut you are not to be called rabbi (teacher), for you have one Teacher and you are all brothers.

»Pero vosotros no pretendáis que os llamen “Rabí”, porque uno es vuestro Maestro, el Cristo, y todos vosotros sois hermanos.

9 A nd do not call anyone on earth father, for you have one Father, Who is in heaven.

Y no llaméis padre vuestro a nadie en la tierra, porque uno es vuestro Padre, el que está en los cielos.

10 A nd you must not be called masters (leaders), for you have one Master (Leader), the Christ.

Ni seáis llamados maestros, porque uno es vuestro Maestro, el Cristo.

11 H e who is greatest among you shall be your servant.

El que es el mayor de vosotros sea vuestro siervo,

12 W hoever exalts himself '> with haughtiness and empty pride] shall be humbled (brought low), and whoever humbles himself shall be raised to honor.

porque el que se enaltece será humillado, y el que se humilla será enaltecido.

13 B ut woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, pretenders (hypocrites)! For you shut the kingdom of heaven in men’s faces; for you neither enter yourselves, nor do you allow those who are about to go in to do so.

»Pero ¡ay de vosotros, escribas y fariseos, hipócritas!, porque cerráis el reino de los cielos delante de los hombres, pues ni entráis vosotros, ni dejáis entrar a los que están entrando.

14 W oe to you, scribes and Pharisees, pretenders (hypocrites)! For you swallow up widows’ houses and for a pretense to cover it up make long prayers; therefore you will receive the greater condemnation and the heavier sentence.

»¡Ay de vosotros, escribas y fariseos, hipócritas!, porque devoráis las casas de las viudas, y como pretexto hacéis largas oraciones; por esto recibiréis mayor condenación.

15 W oe to you, scribes and Pharisees, pretenders (hypocrites)! For you travel over sea and land to make a single proselyte, and when he becomes one, you make him doubly as much a child of hell (Gehenna) as you are.

»¡Ay de vosotros, escribas y fariseos, hipócritas!, porque recorréis mar y tierra para hacer un prosélito y, cuando lo conseguís, lo hacéis dos veces más hijo del infierno que vosotros.

16 W oe to you, blind guides, who say, If anyone swears by the sanctuary of the temple, it is nothing; but if anyone swears by the gold of the sanctuary, he is a debtor.

»¡Ay de vosotros, guías ciegos!, que decís: “Si alguien jura por el Templo, no es nada; pero si alguien jura por el oro del Templo, es deudor.”

17 Y ou blind fools! For which is greater: the gold, or the sanctuary of the temple that has made the gold sacred?

¡Insensatos y ciegos!, porque ¿cuál es mayor, el oro o el Templo que santifica al oro?

18 Y ou say too, Whoever swears by the altar is not duty bound; but whoever swears by the offering on the altar, his oath is binding.

También decís: “Si alguien jura por el altar, no es nada; pero si alguien jura por la ofrenda que está sobre él, es deudor.”

19 Y ou blind men! Which is greater: the gift, or the altar which makes the gift sacred?

¡Necios y ciegos!, porque ¿cuál es mayor, la ofrenda o el altar que santifica la ofrenda?

20 S o whoever swears by the altar swears by it and by everything on it.

El que jura por el altar, jura por él y por todo lo que está sobre él;

21 A nd he who swears by the sanctuary of the temple swears by it and by Him Who dwells in it.

y el que jura por el Templo, jura por él y por el que lo habita;

22 A nd whoever swears by heaven swears by the throne of God and by Him Who sits upon it.

y el que jura por el cielo, jura por el trono de Dios y por aquel que está sentado en él.

23 W oe to you, scribes and Pharisees, pretenders (hypocrites)! For you give a tenth of your mint and dill and cummin, and have neglected and omitted the weightier (more important) matters of the Law—right and justice and mercy and fidelity. These you ought to have done, without neglecting the others.

»¡Ay de vosotros, escribas y fariseos, hipócritas!, porque diezmáis la menta, el anís y el comino, y dejáis lo más importante de la Ley: la justicia, la misericordia y la fe. Esto era necesario hacer, sin dejar de hacer aquello.

24 Y ou blind guides, filtering out a gnat and gulping down a camel!

¡Guías ciegos, que coláis el mosquito y tragáis el camello!

25 W oe to you, scribes and Pharisees, pretenders (hypocrites)! For you clean the outside of the cup and of the plate, but within they are full of extortion (prey, spoil, plunder) and grasping self-indulgence.

»¡Ay de vosotros, escribas y fariseos, hipócritas!, porque limpiáis lo de fuera del vaso y del plato, pero por dentro estáis llenos de robo y de injusticia.

26 Y ou blind Pharisee! First clean the inside of the cup and of the plate, so that the outside may be clean also.

¡Fariseo ciego!, limpia primero lo de dentro del vaso y del plato, para que también lo de fuera quede limpio.

27 W oe to you, scribes and Pharisees, pretenders (hypocrites)! For you are like tombs that have been whitewashed, which look beautiful on the outside but inside are full of dead men’s bones and everything impure.

»¡Ay de vosotros, escribas y fariseos, hipócritas!, porque sois semejantes a sepulcros blanqueados, que por fuera, a la verdad, se muestran hermosos, pero por dentro están llenos de huesos de muertos y de toda inmundicia.

28 J ust so, you also outwardly seem to people to be just and upright but inside you are full of pretense and lawlessness and iniquity.

Así también vosotros por fuera, a la verdad, os mostráis justos a los hombres, pero por dentro estáis llenos de hipocresía e iniquidad.

29 W oe to you, scribes and Pharisees, pretenders (hypocrites)! For you build tombs for the prophets and decorate the monuments of the righteous,

»¡Ay de vosotros, escribas y fariseos, hipócritas!, porque edificáis los sepulcros de los profetas y adornáis los monumentos de los justos,

30 S aying, If we had lived in the days of our forefathers, we would not have aided them in shedding the blood of the prophets.

y decís: “Si hubiéramos vivido en los días de nuestros padres, no habríamos sido sus cómplices en la sangre de los profetas.”

31 T hus you are testifying against yourselves that you are the descendants of those who murdered the prophets.

Con esto dais testimonio contra vosotros mismos de que sois hijos de aquellos que mataron a los profetas.

32 F ill up, then, the measure of your fathers’ sins to the brim '> that nothing may be wanting to a full measure].

¡Vosotros, pues, colmad la medida de vuestros padres!

33 Y ou serpents! You spawn of vipers! How can you escape the penalty to be suffered in hell (Gehenna)?

¡Serpientes, generación de víboras!, ¿cómo escaparéis de la condenación del infierno?

34 B ecause of this, take notice: I am sending you prophets and wise men (interpreters and teachers) and scribes (men learned in the Mosaic Law and the Prophets); some of them you will kill, even crucify, and some you will flog in your synagogues and pursue and persecute from town to town,

Por tanto, yo os envío profetas, sabios y escribas; de ellos, a unos mataréis y crucificaréis, y a otros azotaréis en vuestras sinagogas y perseguiréis de ciudad en ciudad.

35 S o that upon your heads may come all the blood of the righteous ( those who correspond to the divine standard of right) shed on earth, from the blood of the righteous Abel to the blood of Zechariah son of Barachiah, whom you murdered between the sanctuary and the altar.

Así recaerá sobre vosotros toda la sangre justa que se ha derramado sobre la tierra, desde la sangre de Abel, el justo, hasta la sangre de Zacarías hijo de Berequías, a quien matasteis entre el Templo y el altar.

36 T ruly I declare to you, all these '> evil, calamitous times] will come upon this generation.

De cierto os digo que todo esto vendrá sobre esta generación. Lamento de Jesús sobre Jerusalén

37 O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, murdering the prophets and stoning those who are sent to you! How often would I have gathered your children together as a mother fowl gathers her brood under her wings, and you refused!

»¡Jerusalén, Jerusalén, que matas a los profetas y apedreas a los que te son enviados! ¡Cuántas veces quise juntar a tus hijos como la gallina junta sus polluelos debajo de las alas, pero no quisiste!

38 B ehold, your house is forsaken and desolate (abandoned and left destitute of God’s help).

Vuestra casa os es dejada desierta,

39 F or I declare to you, you will not see Me again until you say, Blessed (magnified in worship, adored, and exalted) is He Who comes in the name of the Lord!

pues os digo que desde ahora no volveréis a verme hasta que digáis: “¡Bendito el que viene en el nombre del Señor!”»
