1 E lihu answered (continued his discourse) and said,

Además Eliú dijo:

2 H ear my words, you wise men, and give ear to me, you who have knowledge.

«Escuchad, sabios, mis palabras; y vosotros, doctos, prestadme atención.

3 F or the ear tries words as the palate tastes food.

Porque el oído prueba las palabras, como el paladar saborea lo que uno come.

4 L et us choose for ourselves that which is right; let us know among ourselves what is good.

Escojamos para nosotros lo que es justo; conozcamos entre nosotros lo que es bueno,

5 F or Job has said, I am righteous, but God has taken away my right;

porque Job ha dicho: “Yo soy justo, pero Dios me ha quitado mi derecho.

6 W ould I lie against my right? Yet, notwithstanding my right, I am counted a liar. My wound is incurable, though I am without transgression.

Y ahora ¿habré de mentir contra mi razón? ¡Dolorosa es mi herida, sin haber cometido transgresión!”

7 W hat man is like Job, who drinks up scoffing and scorning like water,

Pues bien, ¿qué hombre hay como Job, que bebe el escarnio como agua,

8 W ho goes in company with the workers of iniquity and walks with wicked men?

que va en compañía de los inicuos y anda con los hombres malos?

9 F or he has said, It profits a man nothing that he should delight himself with God and consent to Him.

Porque ha dicho: “De nada le sirve al hombre conformar su voluntad a Dios.”

10 T herefore hear me, you men of understanding. Far be it from God that He should do wickedness, and from the Almighty that He should commit iniquity.

»Por tanto, oídme vosotros, que sois varones inteligentes: ¡Lejos esté de Dios la impiedad, del Omnipotente la iniquidad!

11 F or according to the deeds of a man God will proportion his pay, and He will cause every man to find according to his ways.

Porque él pagará al hombre según su obra, y le retribuirá conforme a su conducta.

12 T ruly God will not do wickedly, neither will the Almighty pervert justice.

Sí, por cierto, Dios no hará injusticia; el Omnipotente no pervertirá el derecho.

13 W ho put in charge over the earth? Or who laid on Him the whole world?

¿Quién visitó por él la tierra? ¿Quién puso en orden el mundo entero?

14 I f should set His heart upon him and withdraw His spirit and His breath to Himself,

Si él pusiera sobre el hombre su corazón y retirara su espíritu y su aliento,

15 A ll flesh would perish together, and man would turn again to dust.

todo ser humano perecería a un tiempo y el hombre volvería al polvo.

16 I f now you have understanding, hear this; listen to my words.

»Si, pues, hay en ti entendimiento, oye esto; escucha la voz de mis palabras.

17 I s it possible that an enemy of right should govern? And will you condemn Him Who is just and mighty?

¿Gobernará acaso el que aborrece juicio? ¿Condenarás tú al que es tan justo?

18 W ho says to a king, You are worthless and vile, or to princes and nobles, You are ungodly and evil?

¿Se llamará “Perverso” al rey, o “Impíos” a los príncipes?

19 i s not partial to princes, nor does He regard the rich more than the poor, for they all are the work of His hands.

Pues, ¿cuánto menos a aquel que no hace diferencia entre príncipes, ni respeta más al rico que al pobre, porque todos son obra de sus manos?

20 I n a moment they die; even at midnight the people are shaken and pass away, and the mighty are taken away by no hand.

¡En un momento mueren, a medianoche! Los pueblos se alborotan, y ellos pasan, y sin mano de hombre es quitado el poderoso.

21 F or eyes are upon the ways of a man, and He sees all his steps.

Porque los ojos de Dios están sobre los caminos del hombre, y ve todos sus pasos.

22 T here is no darkness nor thick gloom where the evildoers may hide themselves.

No hay tinieblas ni sombra de muerte donde se puedan esconder los que hacen el mal.

23 s ets before man no appointed time, that he should appear before in judgment.

No carga, pues, él al hombre más de lo justo, para que comparezca con Dios a juicio.

24 H e breaks in pieces mighty men without inquiry and in ways past finding out and sets others in their stead.

Él, sin indagación, quebranta a los fuertes y pone a otros en su lugar.

25 T herefore He takes knowledge of their works, and He overturns them in the night, so that they are crushed and destroyed.

Así hace notorias las obras de ellos; los trastorna en la noche y son quebrantados.

26 G od strikes them down as wicked men in the open sight of beholders,

Como a malos que son, los hiere en lugar donde sean vistos,

27 B ecause they turned aside from Him and would not consider or show regard for any of His ways,

por cuanto se han apartado de él y no consideran ninguno de sus caminos,

28 S o that they caused the cry of the poor to come to Him, and He heard the cry of the afflicted.

sino que delante de él hacen venir el clamor del pobre, y que oiga el clamor de los necesitados.

29 W hen He gives quietness (peace and security from oppression), who then can condemn? When He hides His face, who then can behold Him, whether it be a nation or a man by himself?—

Si él da reposo, ¿quién inquietará? Si esconde el rostro, ¿quién lo mirará? Y esto es igual para una nación que para un hombre,

30 T hat the godless man may not reign, that there be no one to ensnare the people.

a fin de que no reine el hombre impío para vejación del pueblo.

31 F or has anyone said to God, I have borne my chastisement; I will not offend any more;

»De seguro conviene decirle a Dios: “Ya he llevado el castigo; no volveré a ofender.

32 T each me what I do not see; if I have done iniquity, I will do it no more?

Enséñame tú lo que yo no veo; y si hice mal, no lo haré más.”

33 S hould recompense be as you will it, when you refuse to accept it? For you must do the choosing, and not I; therefore say what is your truthful conclusion.

Pero, ¿habrá de ser esto según tu parecer? Él te retribuirá, no yo, tanto si rehúsas como si aceptas. Si no es así, di tú lo que sepas.

34 M en of understanding will tell me, indeed, every wise man who hears me,

Los hombres inteligentes dirán conmigo, y también todo hombre sabio que me oiga:

35 T hat Job speaks without knowledge, and his words are without wisdom and insight.

“Job no habla con sabiduría; sus palabras no tienen sentido.”

36 h e be tried to the end because of his answering like wicked men!

¡Yo deseo que Job sea ampliamente examinado, a causa de sus respuestas semejantes a las de los hombres inicuos!

37 F or he adds rebellion to his unacknowledged sin; he claps his hands among us, and he multiplies his words of accusation against God.

Porque a su pecado ha añadido rebeldía, y bate palmas contra nosotros, y contra Dios multiplica sus palabras.»
