1 O n that day they read in the Book of Moses in the audience of the people, and in it was found written that no Ammonite or Moabite should ever come into the assembly of God,

Aquel día se leyó a oídos del pueblo el libro de Moisés, y fue hallado escrito en él que los amonitas y moabitas no debían entrar jamás en la congregación de Dios,

2 F or they met not the Israelites with food and drink but hired Balaam to curse them; yet our God turned the curse into a blessing.

por cuanto no salieron a recibir a los hijos de Israel con pan y agua, sino que dieron dinero a Balaam para que los maldijera; pero nuestro Dios volvió la maldición en bendición.

3 W hen heard the law, they separated from Israel all who were of foreign descent.

Cuando oyeron, pues, la Ley, separaron de Israel a todos los mezclados con extranjeros.

4 N ow before this, Eliashib the priest, who was appointed over the chambers of the house of our God, and was related to Tobiah,

Antes de esto, el sacerdote Eliasib, encargado de los aposentos de la casa de nuestro Dios, había emparentado con Tobías,

5 P repared for Tobiah a large chamber where previously they had put the cereal offerings, the frankincense, the vessels, and the tithes of grain, new wine, and oil which were given by commandment to the Levites, the singers, and gatekeepers, and the contributions for the priests.

y le había hecho una gran habitación, en la cual guardaban antes las ofrendas, el incienso, los utensilios, el diezmo del grano, del vino y del aceite que se había mandado dar a los levitas, a los cantores y a los porteros, y la ofrenda de los sacerdotes.

6 B ut in all this time I was not at Jerusalem, for in the thirty-second year of Artaxerxes king of Babylon I went to the king. Then later I asked leave of him

Pero cuando ocurrió esto, yo no estaba en Jerusalén, porque en el año treinta y dos de Artajerjes, rey de Babilonia, había ido adonde el rey estaba; pero al cabo de algunos días pedí permiso al rey

7 A nd came to Jerusalem. Then I discovered the evil that Eliashib had done for Tobiah in preparing him a chamber in the courts of the house of God!

para volver a Jerusalén; y entonces supe del mal que había hecho Eliasib por consideración a Tobías, haciendo para él una habitación en los atrios de la casa de Dios.

8 A nd it grieved me exceedingly, and I threw all the house furnishings of Tobiah out of the chamber.

Esto me dolió mucho, y arrojé todos los muebles de la casa de Tobías fuera de la habitación.

9 T hen I commanded, and they cleansed the chambers; and I brought back there the vessels of the house of God, with the cereal offerings and the frankincense.

Luego mandé que limpiaran las habitaciones e hice volver allí los utensilios de la casa de Dios, las ofrendas y el incienso.

10 A nd I perceived that the portions of the Levites had not been given them, so that the Levites and the singers who did the work had each fled to his field.

Encontré asimismo que las porciones para los levitas no les habían sido dadas, y que los levitas y cantores que hacían el servicio habían huido cada uno a su heredad.

11 T hen I contended with the officials and said, Why is the house of God neglected and forsaken? I gathered the Levites and singers and set them in their stations.

Entonces reprendí a los oficiales diciéndoles: «¿Por qué está la casa de Dios abandonada?» Después los reuní y los puse en sus puestos.

12 T hen all Judah brought the tithe of the grain, the new wine, and the oil to the storerooms.

Y todo Judá trajo el diezmo del grano, del vino y del aceite, a los almacenes.

13 I set treasurers over the storerooms: Shelemiah the priest, Zadok the scribe, and Pedaiah of the Levites; assisting them was Hanan son of Zaccur, the son of Mattaniah, for they were counted faithful, and their task was to distribute to their brethren.

Luego puse por mayordomos de ellos al sacerdote Selemías y al escriba Sadoc, y de los levitas a Pedaías; y al servicio de ellos a Hanán hijo de Zacur hijo de Matanías; pues eran tenidos por fieles. Ellos se encargarían de repartir las porciones a sus hermanos.

14 O my God, remember me concerning this and wipe not out my good deeds and kindnesses done for the house of my God and for His service.

«¡Acuérdate de mí por esto, Dios mío, y no borres las misericordias que hice en la casa de mi Dios, y en su servicio!»

15 I n those days I saw in Judah men treading winepresses on the Sabbath, bringing in sheaves or heaps of grain with which they loaded donkeys, as well as wine, grapes, figs, and all sorts of burdens, which they brought into Jerusalem on the Sabbath day. And I protested and warned them on the day they sold the produce.

En aquellos días vi en Judá a algunos que pisaban en lagares en sábado, que acarreaban manojos de trigo y cargaban los asnos con vino, y también de uvas, de higos y toda suerte de carga, para traerlo a Jerusalén en sábado; y los amonesté acerca del día en que vendían las provisiones.

16 T here dwelt men of Tyre there also who brought fish and all kinds of wares and sold on the Sabbath to the people of Judah and in Jerusalem.

También había en la ciudad tirios que traían pescado y toda mercadería, y vendían en sábado a los hijos de Judá en Jerusalén.

17 T hen I reproved the nobles of Judah and said, What evil thing is this that you do—profaning the Sabbath day?

Entonces reprendí a los señores de Judá y les dije: «¿Qué mala cosa es ésta que vosotros hacéis, profanando así el sábado?

18 D id not your fathers do thus, and did not our God bring all this evil upon us and upon this city? Yet you bring more wrath upon Israel by profaning the Sabbath.

¿No hicieron así vuestros padres, y trajo nuestro Dios todo este mal sobre nosotros y sobre esta ciudad? ¿Y vosotros añadís ira sobre Israel profanando el sábado?»

19 A nd when it began to get dark at the gates of Jerusalem before the Sabbath, I commanded that the gates should be shut and not be opened till after the Sabbath. And I set some of my servants at the gates to prevent any burden being brought in on the Sabbath day.

Sucedió, pues, que al caer la tarde, antes del sábado, ordené que se cerraran las puertas de Jerusalén y que no las abrieran hasta después del sábado; y puse a las puertas algunos de mis criados, para que no dejaran entrar carga alguna en sábado.

20 S o the merchants and sellers of all kinds of wares lodged outside Jerusalem once or twice.

Una o dos veces, se quedaron fuera de Jerusalén los negociantes y los que vendían toda especie de mercancía.

21 B ut I reproved and warned them, saying, Why do you lodge by the wall? If you do so again, I will lay hands on you. Then they stopped coming on the Sabbath.

Pero yo les amonesté diciéndoles: «¿Por qué os quedáis vosotros delante del muro? Si lo hacéis otra vez, os echaré mano.» Desde entonces no volvieron en sábado.

22 A nd I commanded the Levites to cleanse themselves and come and guard the gates to keep the Sabbath day holy. O my God, remember me concerning this also and spare me according to the greatness of Your mercy and loving-kindness.

Y dije a los levitas que se purificaran y fueran a guardar las puertas, para santificar el sábado. «¡También por esto acuérdate de mí, Dios mío, y perdóname según la grandeza de tu misericordia!»

23 I n those days also I saw Jews who had married wives from Ashdod, Ammon, and Moab.

Vi asimismo en aquellos días a judíos que habían tomado mujeres de Asdod, amonitas, y moabitas;

24 A nd their children spoke half in the speech of Ashdod, and could not speak the Hebrew, but in the language of each people.

y la mitad de sus hijos hablaban la lengua de Asdod, porque no sabían hablar judaico, sino que hablaban conforme a la lengua de cada pueblo.

25 A nd I contended with them and reviled them and beat some of them and pulled out their hair and made them swear by God, saying, You shall not give your daughters to their sons, nor take their daughters for your sons or for yourselves.

Reñí con ellos y los maldije, hice azotar a algunos de ellos y arrancarles los cabellos, y les hice jurar, diciendo: «No daréis vuestras hijas a sus hijos, ni tomaréis de sus hijas para vuestros hijos, ni para vosotros mismos.

26 D id not Solomon king of Israel act treacherously against God and miss the mark on account of such women? Among many nations there was no king like him. He was loved by his God, and God made him king over all Israel; yet strange women even caused him to sin.

¿No pecó por esto Salomón, rey de Israel? Aunque en muchas naciones no hubo rey como él, que era amado de su Dios y Dios lo había puesto por rey sobre todo Israel, aun a él lo hicieron pecar las mujeres extranjeras.

27 S hall we then listen to you to do all this great evil and act treacherously against our God by marrying strange (heathen) women?

¿Os vamos a obedecer ahora cometiendo todo este mal tan grande de prevaricar contra nuestro Dios, tomando mujeres extranjeras?»

28 O ne of the sons of Joiada son of Eliashib the high priest was son-in-law to Sanballat the Horonite; therefore I chased him from me.

Uno de los hijos de Joiada, hijo del sumo sacerdote Eliasib, era yerno de Sanbalat, el horonita; por tanto, lo eché de mi lado.

29 O my God, remember them, because they have defiled the priesthood and the covenant of the priests and Levites.

«¡Acuérdate de ellos, Dios mío, de los que contaminan el sacerdocio y el pacto del sacerdocio y de los levitas!»

30 T hus I cleansed them from everything foreign (heathen), and I defined the duties of the priests and Levites, everyone in his work;

Los limpié, pues, de todo extranjero, y puse a los sacerdotes y levitas por sus grupos, a cada uno en su servicio;

31 A nd I provided for the wood offering at appointed times, and for the firstfruits. O my God, remember me for good and imprint me!

lo mismo hice para la ofrenda de la leña en los tiempos señalados, y para las primicias. «¡Acuérdate de mí, Dios mío, para bien!»
