1 I n the month of Nisan in the twentieth year of King Artaxerxes, when wine was before him, I took up the wine and gave it to the king. Now I had not been sad before in his presence.

Sucedió en el mes de Nisán, en el año veinte del rey Artajerjes, que estando ya el vino delante de él, tomé el vino y lo serví al rey. Y como yo no había estado antes triste en su presencia,

2 S o the king said to me, Why do you look sad, since you are not sick? This is nothing but sorrow of heart. Then I was very much afraid

me dijo el rey: —¿Por qué está triste tu rostro?, pues no estás enfermo. No es esto sino quebranto de corazón. Entonces tuve un gran temor.

3 A nd said to the king, Let the king live forever! Why should I not be sad faced when the city, the place of my fathers’ sepulchers, lies waste, and its gates are consumed by fire?

Y dije al rey: —¡Viva el rey para siempre! ¿Cómo no ha de estar triste mi rostro, cuando la ciudad, casa de los sepulcros de mis padres, está desierta, y sus puertas consumidas por el fuego?

4 T he king said to me, For what do you ask? So I prayed to the God of heaven.

—¿Qué cosa pides? —preguntó el rey. Entonces oré al Dios de los cielos,

5 A nd I said to, If it pleases the king and if your servant has found favor in your sight, I ask that you will send me to Judah, to the city of my fathers’ sepulchers, that I may rebuild it.

y le respondí: —Si le place al rey, y tu siervo ha hallado gracia delante de ti, envíame a Judá, a la ciudad de los sepulcros de mis padres, y la reedificaré.

6 T he king, beside whom the queen was sitting, asked me, How long will your journey take, and when will you return? So it pleased to send me; and I set him a time.

Entonces el rey, que tenía a la reina sentada junto a él, me preguntó: —¿Cuánto durará tu viaje y cuándo volverás? Y agradó al rey enviarme, después que yo le indiqué las fechas.

7 A lso I said to the king, If it pleases the king, let letters be given me for the governors beyond the River, that they may let me pass through to Judah,

Le dije además al rey: —Si al rey le place, que se me den cartas para los gobernadores al otro lado del río, para que me franqueen el paso hasta que llegue a Judá;

8 A nd a letter to Asaph, keeper of the king’s forest or park, that he may give me timber to make beams for the gates of the fortress of the temple and for the city wall and for the house that I shall occupy. And the king granted what I asked, for the good hand of my God was upon me.

y carta para Asaf, guarda del bosque del rey, a fin de que me dé madera para enmaderar las puertas de la ciudadela de la Casa, para el muro de la ciudad y para la casa en que yo estaré. Y me lo concedió el rey, porque la benéfica mano de mi Dios estaba sobre mí.

9 T hen I came to the governors beyond the River and gave them the king’s letters. Now the king had sent captains of the army and horsemen with me.

Fui luego a los gobernadores del otro lado del río y les di las cartas del rey. También el rey envió conmigo capitanes del ejército y gente de a caballo.

10 W hen Sanballat the Horonite and Tobiah the servant, the Ammonite, heard this, it distressed them exceedingly that a man had come to inquire for and require the good and prosperity of the Israelites.

Pero cuando lo oyeron Sanbalat el horonita, y Tobías el siervo amonita, les disgustó mucho que viniera alguien a procurar el bien de los hijos de Israel. Nehemías anima al pueblo a reedificar los muros

11 S o I came to Jerusalem and had been there three days.

Llegué, pues, a Jerusalén, y después de estar allí tres días,

12 T hen I arose in the night, I and a few men with me. And I told no one what my God had put in my heart to do for Jerusalem. No beast was with me except the one I rode.

me levanté de noche, yo y unos pocos hombres conmigo, y no declaré a nadie lo que Dios había puesto en mi corazón que hiciera en Jerusalén. No tenía cabalgadura conmigo, sino la única en que yo cabalgaba.

13 I went out by night by the Valley Gate toward the Dragon’s Well and to the Dung Gate and inspected the walls of Jerusalem, which were broken down, and its gates, which had been destroyed by fire.

Aquella misma noche salí por la puerta del Valle hacia la fuente del Dragón y a la puerta del Muladar; y observé los muros de Jerusalén que estaban derribados y sus puertas que habían sido consumidas por el fuego.

14 I passed over to the Fountain Gate and to the King’s Pool, but there was no place for the beast that was under me to pass.

Pasé luego a la puerta de la Fuente y al estanque del Rey, pero no había lugar por donde pasara la cabalgadura en que iba.

15 S o I went up by the brook in the night and inspected the wall; then I turned back and entered by the Valley Gate, and so returned.

Subí de noche por el torrente y observé el muro, di la vuelta y entré por la puerta del Valle, y regresé.

16 A nd the magistrates knew not where I went or what I did; nor had I yet told the Jews, the priests, the nobles, the officials, or the rest who did the work.

Los oficiales no sabían a dónde yo había ido ni qué había hecho. Todavía no lo había declarado yo a los judíos y sacerdotes, ni a los nobles y oficiales, ni a los demás que hacían la obra.

17 T hen I said to them, You see the bad situation we are in—how Jerusalem lies in ruins, and its gates are burned with fire. Come, let us build up the wall of Jerusalem, that we may no longer be a disgrace.

Les dije, pues: —Vosotros veis la difícil situación en que estamos: Jerusalén está en ruinas y sus puertas consumidas por el fuego. Venid y reconstruyamos el muro de Jerusalén, para que ya no seamos objeto de deshonra.

18 T hen I told them of the hand of my God which was upon me for good, and also the words that the king had spoken to me. And they said, Let us rise up and build! So they strengthened their hands for the good work.

Entonces les declaré cómo la mano de mi Dios había sido buena conmigo, y asimismo las palabras que el rey me había dicho. Ellos respondieron: —¡Levantémonos y edifiquemos! Así esforzaron sus manos para bien.

19 B ut when Sanballat the Horonite and Tobiah the servant, the Ammonite, and Geshem the Arab heard of it, they laughed us to scorn and despised us and said, What is this thing you are doing? Will you rebel against the king?

Pero cuando lo oyeron Sanbalat el horonita, Tobías el siervo amonita y Gesem, el árabe, se burlaron de nosotros y nos despreciaron, diciendo: —¿Qué es lo que estáis haciendo? ¿Os rebeláis contra el rey?

20 I answered them, The God of heaven will prosper us; therefore we His servants will arise and build, but you have no portion or right or memorial in Jerusalem.

Pero yo les respondí: —El Dios de los cielos, él nos prosperará, y nosotros, sus siervos, nos levantaremos y edificaremos, porque vosotros no tenéis parte ni derecho ni memoria en Jerusalén.
