1 A gain the anger of the Lord was kindled against Israel, and He moved David against them, saying, Go, number Israel and Judah.

Volvió a encenderse la ira de Jehová contra los israelitas, e incitó a David contra ellos diciéndole: «Ve, haz un censo de Israel y de Judá.»

2 F or the king said to Joab the captain of the host who was with him, Go now through all the tribes of Israel, from Dan even to Beersheba, and count the people, that I may know their number.

El rey dijo a Joab, general del ejército que estaba con él: —Recorre ahora todas las tribus de Israel, desde Dan hasta Beerseba, y haz un censo del pueblo, para que yo sepa el número de los habitantes.

3 A nd Joab said to the king, May the Lord your God add a hundred times as many people as there are, and let the eyes of my lord the king see it; but why does my lord the king delight in this thing?

Joab respondió al rey: —Que Jehová, tu Dios, multiplique al pueblo cien veces más de lo que es, y que pueda verlo mi señor, el rey. Pero, ¿por qué se complace en esto mi señor, el rey?

4 B ut the king’s word prevailed against Joab and the commanders of the army. So they went from the king’s presence to number the Israelites.

Sin embargo, la palabra del rey prevaleció sobre la de Joab y sobre la de los capitanes del ejército. Se retiró, pues, Joab, con los capitanes del ejército, de la presencia del rey, para hacer el censo del pueblo de Israel.

5 T hey passed over the Jordan and encamped in Aroer, on the south side of the city lying in the midst of the ravine toward Gad, and on to Jazer.

Pasaron el Jordán y acamparon en Aroer, al sur de la ciudad que está en medio del valle de Gad, junto a Jazer.

6 T hen they came to Gilead, and to the land of Tahtim-hodshi, and they came to Dan-jaan and around to Sidon,

Después fueron a Galaad y a la tierra baja de Hodsi; de allí a Danjaán y a los alrededores de Sidón.

7 A nd came to the stronghold of Tyre and to all the cities of the Hivites and Canaanites; and they went out to the South (the Negeb) of Judah at Beersheba.

Luego fueron a la fortaleza de Tiro y a todas las ciudades de los heveos y de los cananeos, y por último se dirigieron al Neguev de Judá, en Beerseba.

8 S o when they had gone through all the land, they came to Jerusalem at the end of nine months and twenty days.

Después que terminaron de recorrer toda la tierra, volvieron a Jerusalén al cabo de nueve meses y veinte días.

9 A nd Joab gave the sum of the numbering of the people to the king. There were in Israel 800, 000 valiant men who drew the sword, and the men of Judah were 500, 000.

Joab entregó entonces el censo del pueblo al rey; había en Israel ochocientos mil hombres fuertes que sacaban espada, y los de Judá eran quinientos mil hombres.

10 B ut David’s heart smote him after he had numbered the people. David said to the Lord, I have sinned greatly in what I have done. I beseech You, O Lord, take away the iniquity of Your servant, for I have done very foolishly.

Después que David censó al pueblo, le pesó en su corazón; y dijo David a Jehová: —He pecado gravemente por haber hecho esto; pero ahora, oh Jehová, te ruego que quites el pecado de tu siervo, porque he actuado muy neciamente.

11 W hen David arose in the morning, the word of the Lord came to the prophet Gad, David’s seer, saying,

Por la mañana, cuando David se levantó, vino palabra de Jehová al profeta Gad, vidente de David, diciendo:

12 G o and say to David, Thus says the Lord, I hold over you three choices; select one of them, so I may bring it upon you.

«Ve y di a David: Así ha dicho Jehová: “Tres cosas te ofrezco; tú escogerás una de ellas, para que yo la haga.”»

13 S o Gad came to David and told him and said, Shall seven years of famine come to your land? Or will you flee three months before your pursuing enemies? Or do you prefer three days of pestilence in your land? Consider and see what answer I shall return to Him Who sent me.

Vino, pues, Gad a David, se lo hizo saber y le dijo: —¿Qué prefieres: que vengan siete años de hambre sobre tu tierra? ¿o que huyas tres meses delante de tus enemigos y que ellos te persigan? ¿o que haya tres días de peste en tu tierra? Piensa ahora, y mira qué debo responder al que me ha enviado.

14 A nd David said to Gad, I am in great distress. Let us fall into the hands of the Lord, for His mercies are many and great; but let me not fall into the hands of man.

Entonces David dijo a Gad: —Estoy en gran angustia. Pero es preferible caer ahora en manos de Jehová, porque sus misericordias son muchas, que caer en manos de los hombres.

15 S o the Lord sent a pestilence upon Israel from the morning even to the time appointed; and there died of the people from Dan even to Beersheba 70, 000 men.

Entonces Jehová envió la peste sobre Israel, desde esa mañana hasta el tiempo señalado, y murieron setenta mil hombres del pueblo desde Dan hasta Beerseba.

16 A nd when the angel stretched out his hand upon Jerusalem to destroy it, the Lord relented of the evil and reversed His judgment and said to the destroying angel, It is enough; now stay your hand. And the angel of the Lord was by the threshing floor of Araunah the Jebusite.

Y cuando el ángel extendió su mano sobre Jerusalén para destruirla, Jehová se arrepintió de aquel mal, y dijo al ángel que exterminaba al pueblo: «Basta ya; detén tu mano.» El ángel de Jehová estaba junto a la era de Arauna, el jebuseo.

17 W hen David saw the angel who was smiting the people, he spoke to the Lord and said, Behold, I have sinned and I have done wickedly; but these sheep, what have they done? Let Your hand, I pray You, be against me and against my father’s house.

Cuando David vio al ángel que castigaba al pueblo, dijo a Jehová: —Yo pequé, yo hice lo malo; ¿qué hicieron estas ovejas? Te ruego que tu mano se vuelva contra mí y contra la casa de mi padre.

18 T hen Gad came to David and said, Go up, rear an altar to the Lord on the threshing floor of Araunah the Jebusite.

Vino Gad adonde estaba David aquel día, y le dijo: «Sube y levanta un altar a Jehová en la era de Arauna, el jebuseo.»

19 S o David went up according to Gad’s word, as the Lord commanded.

David subió conforme al dicho de Gad, según lo había mandado Jehová.

20 A raunah looked and saw the king and his servants coming toward him; and went out and bowed himself before the king with his face to the ground.

Arauna miró y vio al rey y a sus siervos que venían hacia él. Salió entonces Arauna, se inclinó delante del rey, rostro a tierra,

21 A raunah said, Why has my lord the king come to his servant? And David said, To buy the threshing floor from you, to build there an altar to the Lord, that the plague may be stayed from the people.

y dijo: —¿Por qué viene mi señor, el rey, a ver a su siervo? David respondió: —Para comprarte la era y edificar en ella un altar a Jehová, a fin de que cese la mortandad del pueblo.

22 A nd Araunah said to David, Let my lord the king take and offer up what seems good to him. Behold, here are oxen for burnt sacrifice, and threshing instruments and the yokes of the oxen for wood.

Arauna dijo a David: —Tome y ofrezca mi señor el rey lo que bien le parezca; ahí tienes bueyes para el holocausto, los trillos y los yugos de los bueyes para leña.

23 A ll this, O king, Araunah gives to the king. And Araunah said to the king, The Lord your God accept you.

Todo esto, oh rey, Arauna lo da al rey. Luego dijo Arauna al rey: —Jehová, tu Dios, te sea propicio.

24 B ut King David said to Araunah, No, but I will buy it of you for a price. I will not offer burnt offerings to the Lord my God of that which costs me nothing. So David bought the threshing floor and the oxen for fifty shekels of silver.

El rey dijo a Arauna: —No; la compraré por su precio; porque no ofreceré a Jehová, mi Dios, holocaustos que no me cuesten nada. Y David compró la era y los bueyes por cincuenta siclos de plata.

25 D avid built there an altar to the Lord and offered burnt offerings and peace offerings. So the Lord heeded the prayers for the land, and Israel’s plague was stayed.

Edificó allí David un altar a Jehová, y sacrificó holocaustos y ofrendas de paz. Entonces Jehová oyó las súplicas de la tierra y cesó la plaga en Israel.
